I was convinced the 6 speed is enough and long term better so appreciate this 10speed towing vid !!

    • @DonkeyEvo
      @DonkeyEvo Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah, the whole not wanting it to lug thing is false. If you want an engine that stays up in rpm to tow then buy a gas truck. Otherwise you can't use the torque of the diesel. A matter of fact Cummins large truck engines (isx15) boast "luggability" down to 1100 rpm. The ability for a diesel engine to pull at lower rpms and lug is one of it's biggest advantages. lol

    This is really helpful information. I am in the process of upgrading from a 2013 F350 CC SRW Long Bed to a 2022 F350 CC DRW Long Bed for hauling my fifth wheel RV which weighs about 15,000 pounds with a pin weight that is about 3,500 pounds. I had been debating between the 3.55 and 4.10 gears (3.73 not available). I prefer the 3.55 for daily driving and less engine noise but wasn't sure if I would regret not going with 4.10 gears. But, your video seems to prove out to me that the 3.55 gears and 10 speed transmission combination should be more than sufficient for my needs.

    The 10-8 shift is rough because the converter is staying locked so they don't have to pull boost and fuel.
    If they let the converter unlock in that loaded shift the RPM would flair and the torque converter clutch would have a very short life from trying to engage under full power. The other option is to bleed boost, defuel and unlock for the shift. relock, then allow power. That would create way to much lag.
    Cummins has a flap in the exhaust, the Duramax and power stroke do not.
    The Cummins's pistons are larger (only having 6 vs 8) and have too much rotational Mass to do high RPM (hence 2800RPM redline). The lighter rotational Mass of the v8's allow a higher defueled engine speed. The exhaust brake on the powerstroke is just the vanes in the turbocharger.
    It is more effective at higher engine speeds. Higher speeds also allow more cooling to occur to prepare for the inevitable uphill section. With higher RPM also comes more available oil pressure. All in the name of longevity.
    The new trucks use electrically controlled vanes vs the hydraulic units in the old trucks. This allows the mapping to be more aggressive without worrying about lack of flow in cold climates. This is where the engine brake improvement comes from.
    The lugging is based on customer feedback, many people believe high RPM is bad for economy (technically true) and Ford would prefer people leave the system in drive for best overall performance (cruise control integration, cooling, economy). People also complained about the F-150 shifting too much on any incline. So they lug a bit in 10th, so people are less likely to force 10th in manual mode and tear their rod bearings up. Power is limited in 10th to prevent transmission damage, as such there is no inherent damage occurring in D in the engine either.
    For those interested torque is limited in gears 1,2,3 for SRW 6.7 trucks and only 1st for DRW trucks.

      KoolCordell Hey that’s great info man. I guess I was wondering if there is a way they can change the software that it will use 10th less once you unable tow haul. I know I can do that myself with the gear selector and it is what I will be doing in the future. Even in 9th at 65mph the RPM is only like 1600 and that is where the peak torque is.

    • @KoolCordell
      @KoolCordell Před 4 lety +1

      @@workplaytv I agree with you but then you will get customer complaints about how there truck won't engage 10th, about how it's costing them all this money in fuel (People genuinely believe you can get 25MPG towing 15k lbs😂) etc. People have gone speed crazy, I regularly see people doing 75-85 with loads like you pulled. The 10th gear seriously helps those morons.
      The 10 speed (in Ford at least, GM has taken a different approach) has opened a window, you can get 4.10 gears and not have it screaming down the highway, you can have your cake and eat it too. And for those that just buy a truck off the lot without even looking at the actual numbers (it was $18k off for a reason), the lower 1st gear minimizes warranty claims from the guy who buys a 3.31 truck and tries to tow his 20k 5th wheel over the Rockies at 70.
      "It tows like crap, and overheats"
      Well you are overloading it sir

    I'm asking as I'm curious while I'll wait for my F250 (HD Tow Package / 3:55) to show up. My dealer called me last weekend stating that my delivery date slipped from 28 Jan to middle of Feb. I ordered it 3 Nov

    The Ford is an amazing truck but here’s my problem, the same drivetrain can handle 37000 lbs. Now I know it’s not setup like a dually. My point a Chevy, a Ram will also haul 18000 lbs nearly identical time if you stay within speed limits.
    Because, the same thing, Chevy and Ram, have much higher weight ratings in their dually.
    We are reaching the point in these trucks, all three, that testing anything below 30,000 lbs will probably not produce a differential outcome except how it feels to the driver. That Ford probably has a 3400 lb or so payload and is capable to haul nearly 21000 lbs. correct?
    I just think the setups are so good in all three trucks, that anyone you buy will serve ya well.

      But really I think they have given to much credence to time up the hill and didn’t put enough emphasis on zero brake applications going down. Like I said earlier do I really care going up if I’m one minute slower? Or for safety’s sake would I rather have zero brake applications. Nice channel btw!

I know everyone has their preferences, but HD trucks that can't haul my ATV in the bed without the tailgate down are kinda weird. Reminds me of the time I was at a New Holland dealer buying a tractor and a SB F350 showed up and the owner said...look at that....all that truck and can't put the tailgate up on a sheet of plywood.
