2017 Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Review [Owner Review] Watch Before Buying!

- Reviewing a 2017 Toyota Mirai. It is a hydrogen powered car that shows both the best...and the worst of hydrogen ownership. Currently the Mirai main competition is the Honda Clarity so I do recommend doing a bit of a comparison! I owned the Mirai for 3 years, so it was interesting gaining knowledge of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle. Definitely recommend though watching my review to see some of the pitfalls to owning a hydrogen car such as the Toyota Mirai.

It hilarious how much mirai's have deprecated. In 2020 you can get a mirai for just under 10k with only 30k miles.
I know lol. I'm just glad I got the deal I did. No paying for fuel or maintenance is also nice.
So my concern is is it worth getting a 2016-2017 miria? They are at that price point and even some 9k. Why did they depreciate so much?
I purchased a 2016 Mirai last month for just under $12k with 27k miles. Toyota offered 0% APR and the 3yr/ $15k fuel card for it as well. Granted you use up the funds, it’s basically a free car. I think they are depreciating at this rate because the technology is still in its infancy and the infrastructure is still pretty weak. I live in the Bay Area so there are enough stations here and the ones near me are pretty reliable.
@@vanshvenugopal7113 my concern is , the cost to fill up after 3 year. Now with Cov19, there's no way to use up $15k of fuel.
@@ericachau9274 I understand that concern, but like anything, you have to check if it makes sense for you. My father uses the car currently since he still has to commute up to Oakland everyday. If you are WFH now, the Mirai does not make sense and you might not be able to cash in on all of the $15k fuel credit.
I'm ready to lease 2019 Mirai, but the near by Toyota dealers' waiting time to get this car is about a month.
Hi Rob! Thank you for a good review...
Are you a sugar coated FUNK BERY!?!? Great review my man. You are a GENIUS
Definitely hit or miss in terms of looks from various angles. I do love that color though!
Agreed..
Mirai owner in Los Angeles, would not get it again with the lower cost Tesla model 3 out. Limited stations weren't the main issue, I knew that going in. Station's going down, limited fuel supply, partial fills, frozen nozzles, long lines, 200-250 mile fill ups. Its nice when its full, and nice to drive, very quiet. I've had to get it towed once because the station I was going to went down while I was on my way there, and I couldn't make it to the next one. I don't think there is a future for hydrogen, with the dropping costs of batteries.
This is a PSA: Owning a hydrogen car has been the worst car ownership experience in my life: stations are down OFTEN, when I call to customer service and they tell me they work and have enough hydrogen in them I often go there and there's no hydrogen or it doesn't work. And I live in northern CA where we have the most hydrogen stations. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD UNTIL THEY RECTIFY THIS HORRIFIC FUELING EXPERIENCE DO NOT, DO NOT BUY a hydrogen car. Just get ANYTHING else
Where do you live? Do you still have this problem? I'm in the East Bay and was thinking about getting one.
Good music choice!
Yeah I wish I lived in CA so I could get this. They should build more fuel stations.
October 2023, all mirais in my area (San Diego, California) are being bought back by Toyota because we literally have ONE station for all the cars in a 250 mile radius.
That’s insane!
I would love to own this car, but I live in Massachusetts.
Just saw your post on Reddit! Sad to see the Mirai go, but congrats on the Supra!
Thank you! It was bittersweet watching them roll it away!
Hi. I appreciate your review about toyota mirai. I am considering owning one and would like your experience. I live in socal and according to the fueling map, there are quite a bit around. How is your personal experience in using fueling station?? Is there a long wait every time?? Does it run out??? I have seen many horrid reviews and I am unsure due to fueling experiences.thank you
From what I have seen, there are longer wait times in the so-cal stations. There is only one station around where I live BUT not as many Mirai owners around me so the longest line I had been in was 4 cars. Takes about 5-7 minutes to refuel from empty!
3 years later... Just bought a CPO 2017 Mirai for 11k out the door... and it came with the 15k/3year Fuel card. Fuckin paying me to drive their car... lol
Nice!
There’s one near me for about 10k . I’m debating on whether to get it . I assume you’re from Southern California as well ?
@@ericherrera6653 north California, near SF
How's it going so far?
Got to drive one of these, I liked it but I didn't have the money for it when it was new. I've seen them for sale used. So I'm just going to save buy it too replace my toyota echo.
Nice!
Rob, I might get a Mirai this week. Question: what’s the interaction with the entertainment system like, since it doesn’t have Apple CarPlay? I stream a lot from my iPhone and use google maps. Thanks for the great video!
Christiano thanks for the compliment! The entertainment system isn’t bad, just your basic Bluetooth functionality. I use Spotify + Google maps from my iPhone XS every day with no problem. Can also do a wired connection if you don’t want to do Bluetooth.
Robs Autos can you mirror it on the car or do you just use it on the phone itself? Also, what iPhone holder is that I see on the video? I’d like to get the same. 👍🏻
Christiano scosche magnetic mount from amazon, pretty nifty.
It does not mirror the GPS, just displays whatever music is playing on the screen.
I would like to own one.
When you said you lowered the lease price how did you do that? The lease appears to be basically a new car free for 3 years
At the time there was a friends and family deal going that allowed me to bypass the down payment.
The fuel cell technology will be used in Toyota's fuel cell Class 8 heavy tractor trailer trucks! That will be the real game-changer. The latest one uses two of the Mirai's fuel cell stacks.
lol toyota will die in less than 5 years
All right.
My wife and I just purchased a used 2017 today and will be picking it up on Saturday in Los Angeles.
We are new to this. what should we expect from it? We are getting it from a VW dealer, are there any incentives or fueling cards available?
How’s your driving of Mirai?
I am wondering how much better are the hydrogen stations now that’s been 3 years later of this being released? I am considering in leasing one this month
Still shortages! I just returned my Mirai this month. I was going to give it back with a full tank of hydrogen but of course the week I returned it was another "shortage" week!
@@RobsAutoshow often are shortages?
Hi Rob, I am planning to buy a used 2017 Mirai that has 20k miles on it for about $10,000 and I within 20 miles of 3 hydrogen stations. Kindly provide your thoughts and thanks in advance. BTW, you did a great video and after watching it, looks like 3-year lease is another good option.
Thank you for the kind words! I would recommend looking into the future maintenance costs. As I said in my video, Toyota covered the costs of maintenance but I heard from other owners that basic maintenance was definitely pricier than with an ICE car. At least you should have hydrogen in abundance! Enjoy the car, it is a smooth ride!
@@RobsAutos thank you.
nice
Watching this makes me realize Tesla is far into the future. The UI and tech in the car is so 2010.
I’m thinking about buying a Toyota certified mirai for about 14 k with about 40k mileage on it . They are offering 0apr and that 15k gas card . With these gas card are they good at all fill up locations in CA ? Also what do you think that’s a good deal ?
Yeah, the gas card works at every hydrogen station. Since I have Toyota Care, I can't really speak for the maintenance costs for the car so I would recommend checking that out first! I do remember a Clarity owner once telling me that the maintenance as pricier than for his cars.....
I know it’s kinda late but I’d suggest looking at another Mirai or negotiating the price. I got mine for under $12k with 27k miles at Stevens Creek.
Thinking about getting this used at 11k USD, which comes with the 15k fuel credit as well.
Wouldn’t be a bad deal actually, maybe look into maintenance costs too.
I bought one in August and convinced 2 of my friends to purchase one too through the referral program. We are all very happy with the car and I'm already thinking about getting the 2nd generation in a few years!
I’m Financing got the car 17,000 miles paying 11,000 as well as only 205 a month! Plus the 15,000 fuel card
@@josephrivas1638 dealership in Los Angeles?
@@RobsAutos what kind of maintenance would this car usually need?
Hydro is less efficient than bev however potentially far more environmentally friendly which is the point for many.
It’s not more environmentally friendly. The energy for BEV is transported over wires. The energy for Hydrogen cars is transported with gas guzzling trucks. Despite what people say, BEV batteries CAN be recycled and the lithium and other minerals CAN be recovered. Tesla recycles every battery they replace and make a profit doing so. Hydrogen is less efficient so more energy must be used to create the same amount of wheel turning compared to BEV.
It drives much better than prius as it is 20 inches longer.
If I were to purchase a used Mirai will I still get the rebate?
No, but CPO Mirai come with the $15000 fuel card
100% love mine, best car I've ever owned
How can i get the 15k card gas if i get it from the street
hi i would like to try it out
How long does the fuel cells last for?
Toyota claims the life of the vehicle, so if Toyota is going by their usual standards then I'm guessing 200K+
Do you still recommend this Mirai? Thanks!
If you are willing to try a hydrogen car and recognize there may be infrastructure problems then it might not be a bad idea!
@@RobsAutos My biggest worry is to go to a hydrogen filling station and find out they are out of hydrogen or closed for a day or something. Does that happen once in a while or very regular. I didn't see any station near Bakersfield. Is there any way to find out if Bakersfield will get a station anytime soon. Without a station in/near Bakersfield, it probably won't make any sense to get this car if one lives in Bakersfield. I mean LA is over 100 miles away and this car's range is 225-250 miles in real life.
How many miles they can last?
I have seen models so far beat 80K but not sure if I have seen anyone pass it.....not because they are breaking but just because no one is posting about it
Hay rob I just bought a Toyota fuel cell today and it was to good of a deal it has 15,000 miles purchase price was 14,599 I got a 15,000 dollar fuel card but I have a big concern with the oxygen tanks I herd that thay had an experation date and I herd there really pricey to change as well as the others where being soldthay had really high mileage but thay all was the same price I felt that was kinda odd but I still felt I was good to try anyway let me know what you think I liked the video any feed back will be greatly appreciated
Hello Tim, great to hear that you picked up a Mirai! Especially with the fuel card. In regards to the oxygen tanks I actually haven't heard anything about them expiring unfortunately. I have noticed the prices of the Mirai has stayed pretty consistent despite the mileage, makes me wonder if everyone just as a "floor" they are trying to stay at.
Did you bought it from the toyota dealer or street
Would you recommend buying a second hand 2017 Mirai?
I would only buy one if I acquired another $15K fuel card
I would too. How did u get it?
@@RobsAutos just got my 2017 mirai used certified and it came with the same fuel card and 1 year comprehensive warranty! 0% apr up to 72 mo and honestly a steal 🤓
@@TrangLe-rs9bu Nice!!!!!
@@TrangLe-rs9bu is it ok to know how much you paid for it and what was the mileage on the car? I am seriously considering to buy a certified car from our local dealer.
I hope I can buy one in China.
I think China pollution will be gone if China focus on hydrogen fuel cell and carbon capture. Just ask the government to give free air filters for these cars:) czcams.com/video/UnE1NSt77ck/video.html
That opening music made me cry blood
Synthetic leather doesn't breath well
When you can use water to fill it up, THEN I will buy one.
Then Hydrogen is a completely unnecessary middle man in the equation. If you have an energy producer that can split water in your car, use that energy to charge the battery. That is much more efficient than creating hydrogen that would also need to be pressurized (more energy) and then go through a fuel cell.
