When I was a kid, my dad had a 1989 Toyota Corolla SX in white. It was the performance Corolla of its day, with 100kW under your right foot from Toyota's 4a-GE engine. Well fast forward 30 years and this weapon of a hot hatch comes out, and I can't help but remember the days of riding around in my dad's GR Corolla of its day.
I remember from when young and stupid enjoying a great fang in a rented 1989 Corolla (Seca Twin Cam) for the 50Km drive from Perth down to Rockingham via Kwinana Freeway. Night time so no traffic. Easy 160kph and rock solid handling. Great car for a rental at the time.
This was my first car. Loved that thing so much! I used to destroy Mitsubishi 2L Turbo Cordias for fun. the 4AGE engine was bullet proof! I miss that car so much!
100% i get its a monster but 80k for a corolla .. it looks great except for the rear flared guards now if the rear was naturally flared ( so the actual body was widened to fit the wider rear wheel base not bolted on looking flares ) would look much better as it kinda looks lame with these flared guards at the rear ( ohh and 3 exhaust tips over kill pointless much ) otherwise the rest of the car looks epic !! Alot like my distaste for the GR yaris i cannot get over the bolt on looking flared guards at the rear it looks stupid IMO !!
Hello from Manchester UK. This is the first video I've watched on your channel and what a great review. This looks like an amazing machine and a great big brother to the small but mighty GR Yaris.
I would pay 50,000 . Two reasons one it's a Toyota Two it's a Corolla and it doesn't matter how they dress it up or what they call it it's a Toyota Corolla and that's the end.
Considering the hot rally spec cars of the 90s and 00s that had an interior of a wheely bin, the inside is fantastic, they really spared no expense in the Corolla.
I get where you’re coming from but it’s lacking common features like centre console storage, a sunglasses holder, some sort of cup securing mechanism and an auto dimming mirror. All things the Golf R has in addition to many other niceties like heated things, a good sounding horn and solid doors. But agree if it’s good enough in other respects it can redeem itself and probably is aimed at a slightly different market. A front LSD is nice but arguably more so the torque vectoring rear diff on the Mk8 which actually results in oversteer. I suspect between a wider track and better tyres, the GR’s outright cornering performance would be better and enjoyment from the manual good, but in a straight line or any road not dominated by extremely tight corners, it will get smashed.

I had the same reaction while driving a GTR R34 with 860bhp. No time to talk, super busy figuring out as it's not my car and the connection between you and your car is something else. I can relate your smile while driving. I bet you're enjoying every bit of your job. BTW big fan of GR corolla.

😂 The reactions from 14:40 onwards says it all...brilliant car but the buckets of money required for a hotted up Corolla or Yaris is mind blowing but if the performance matches its potentially justified. Great video guys!
Here in South Africa I anticipate it will be around 800k to 900k. It seems it will be an icon for years to come. Definitely something different from the vw and looks monstrous
It sounds noisey on the video, lots of cheap plastic, no arm rest and then that centre screen looks terrible like a after thought. Golf any day, it will always be the bench mark.
I love this car so much! The GR Yaris is the more special car since it is smaller and it is the actual homologation car, but this GR Corolla with it's four doors and better interior is just the car to have!
For something so expensive you would expect premium features. I think I20N or I30N is a much better choice and less money Limited warranty unlike Hyundai with track warranty
@@elmin2323 No. The GRC is a far better looking car inside and out. The interior of the I30N is tragic. The sunroof option is good though. BTW you can't even buy an I30N as they have stopped taking orders.
As close to a modern WRX/EVO as we're going to get, which is no bad thing! But for approx. $70k driveaway I think the interior is a bit low-rent and the lack of tech, comfort and features is noticeable when compared to a Golf R or Civic Type R. Maybe this would make alot more sense at around $50k on the used market in a few years.
Great review! Just think, this engine is sporting stronger internals, so a simple 'flash' tune will yield around an extra 40-50KWS! That's 350HP from a 1.6LT! just nuts!
Just got the ZR, wish I could’ve convinced my partner to get a GR but the price tag kills it for me. But if I had the chance I’d jump at getting one for sure
@@stopspin it’s a nice car you don’t really get a whole tonne of features other than 18” rims and a choice of two tone colour scheme like I went for the frost white with black roof then added the optional spoiler which I think looks choice. Also you get suede seats which are really nice and comfy, I’m fairly certain Paul has done a video on the ZR and whole Corolla range for an in depth look at the differences. It’s got CVT transmission because it is a hybrid. The responsiveness is great, I’ve gone up to 170 and taken a corner like it was nothing, but 170 is it’s top speed aswell. It’ll put a smile on your face to say the least really fun hatch. Hopefully answers some of your questions
At that price point, a Kia Stinger would be a better value/performance/daily drive proposition. The only thing this has going for it, is that it is available in a manual transmission.
Good grief, this car is the same price as the Kia Stinger in Australia?😮 That seems like madness to me. We don't get this car in the UK, something which annoys me greatly, but if they're charging silly money for it, then we're not missing much.

Might be an unpopular opinion here, but this is an adult car for a child. It is impractical and does not offer real world advances in terms of everyday use and enjoyment. The top spec hatch would serve you just as well, albeit without the added pace and kid-like excitement that comes with this GR. Yes, fun to drive (which I have done), but not as a daily. Especially at this price point. Value for money is just not there and I cannot see myself forking out all that cash or finance for a unit that will see me frustrated at that tiny screen, limited storage options and oh-so-small trunk space. With that being said, this car is nice and your reviews are always on point and at the top of my list. I enjoy watching your informative and well scripted views.

I bought a manual golf r 7.5 in 2019 for $46k. Arguably a nicer car. Amazing that hot hatches have nearly doubled In price in 4 years. Will be interesting to see if these specialty Toyotas actually go up in value over the next few years
Yeah at this point I'd rather a golf 7.5. Nicer interior and better as a daily even though its older and plenty of mods to make it comparable with the Corolla for performance.
Any hot hatch in a Manual is the collectors drivers car of the future.. who is going to want to drive a quiet smooth single gear EV for fun…. Any of these I30N, civic Type R, any toyota GR, BRZ, wrx is a win in my book.
I owned a dct for 6 months, amazing car, so much character. It’s not always about 0-100 times, I’d rather have an N because of the noise, torque steer and overall character. In the dry that is….
The GTS (which already has all the fruits and berries) is the only GR Corolla we can get, albeit in very limited numbers. The Morizo will only be reserved by dealership owners and their families. Ask any dealer and they'll tell you an allocation of a customer allocation to a Morizo will have similar odds to winning the lottery.
The yaris GR is still the special one to me, with the bespoke chassis and rally homologation. I would have loved to see the Corolla's stronger engine put into the yaris though. that would be the perfect combo
Corolla's has a stronger engine because of the weight of the corolla. That being said, if this engine is exactly the same which I think it is, just put an Updated tune into the Yaris.
@@KuroRyuu86 indeed it is the same as the gr yaris with an updated cylinder head work due to data from endurance racing. so an ecu tune should work just fine with no issues.
Just got my Circuit Edition, this car is so special to drive but I would have liked a less showy exterior. Find all the driving inputs really good, clutch is on the heavy side for the commute.

Great review as usual! but what's the point of putting a car on sale when and every dealer Ive contacted refuses to sell one to the public? I've owned several Toyota Lexus products and that's still not good enough to be able to purchase one from my dealer. Honestly this purchase model is a flippers dream, those who gave Toyota lots of money are allowed to make even more from buying and flipping this.
I think you’ll find most people who buy this car have enough self confidence to say they drive one of these and are able to actually spell the name Corolla.
Its a decent car but the GR Yaris is just more unique and cooler imo and frankly this car doesn't have much more features or practicality that warrant the massive price tag.
I’m kind of disappointed with the state of Toyotas interiors lately, overuse of piano black, panels feeling cheap and just on a whole looking at least 5-10 years behind the competition
I know most of the comments are complaining about the lack of interior features in this car. But I kinda like it. It is really a track/rally focused car. Obviously probably to shed some weight to give it those legs you mentioned about. It's a fantastic looking car and they are finally bringing back track focused cars. Price is steep for a corolla, but it's to be expected under the GR brand as to what It was back in the day with TRD Toyotas. This looks more fun to drive than the tech heavy wizardly of the other brands. Basically going back to their routes while adding some modern convenience.

3 cylinder is not an engine one should expect to carry them for years to come. This GR will definitely change the hot hatch segment

I just passed one yesterday in Florida on i95 and it looked amazing. I just can’t imagine spending 70k for a Corolla.

i have a 2022 corolla sedan and the rear view camera at night is quite poor. probably would be the same issue here.
They should make an estate version as the golf also has the golf r estate. This is too cramped for me

Personally I think the golf r interior is plasty and shit for 75k. Ergonomically it's awful as well. That infotainment is a horror show.

This thing is beyond cool, I absolutely love the tri-exhausts. Too bad they cheaped out on the interior again (mainly the infotainment screen)
Any hot hatch in a Manual is the collectors drivers car of the future.. who is going to want to drive a quiet smooth single gear EV for fun…. Any of these I30N, civic Type R, any toyota GR, BRZ, wrx is a win in my book.
Yaris is 200kg lighter! & looks better to me.
The i30N seems a much better offer compared to this imo.

I owned a dct for 6 months, amazing car, so much character. It’s not always about 0-100 times, I’d rather have an N because of the noise, torque steer and overall character. In the dry that is….
Now this will definitely stand out in a crowd of all the boring SUV's and crossovers in the market, and be more fun

The GTS (which already has all the fruits and berries) is the only GR Corolla we can get, albeit in very limited numbers. The Morizo will only be reserved by dealership owners and their families. Ask any dealer and they'll tell you an allocation of a customer allocation to a Morizo will have similar odds to winning the lottery.

The yaris GR is still the special one to me, with the bespoke chassis and rally homologation. I would have loved to see the Corolla's stronger engine put into the yaris though. that would be the perfect combo
Just get an ECU tune the engine is much the same as the gr yaris
Corolla's has a stronger engine because of the weight of the corolla. That being said, if this engine is exactly the same which I think it is, just put an Updated tune into the Yaris.
@@KuroRyuu86 indeed it is the same as the gr yaris with an updated cylinder head work due to data from endurance racing. so an ecu tune should work just fine with no issues.
I would strongly recommend people watching the US guys do a review on the car as they found the brakes lacking for track use.

Just got my Circuit Edition, this car is so special to drive but I would have liked a less showy exterior. Find all the driving inputs really good, clutch is on the heavy side for the commute.
performance badge and price tag aint fooling the many proper toyota enthusiast.
I have ordered one, not due til 4th quarter of the year…. I am disappointed by the interior but impressed with the engine and exterior
i think they skipped the arm rest coz of the manual gear, it might be that your elbow hit's it when changing gears

Great review as usual! but what's the point of putting a car on sale when and every dealer Ive contacted refuses to sell one to the public? I've owned several Toyota Lexus products and that's still not good enough to be able to purchase one from my dealer. Honestly this purchase model is a flippers dream, those who gave Toyota lots of money are allowed to make even more from buying and flipping this.
Imagine spending that much money on a car and then still having to tell people that you drive a Carolla 😂

I think you’ll find most people who buy this car have enough self confidence to say they drive one of these and are able to actually spell the name Corolla.
Its a decent car but the GR Yaris is just more unique and cooler imo and frankly this car doesn't have much more features or practicality that warrant the massive price tag.

I’m kind of disappointed with the state of Toyotas interiors lately, overuse of piano black, panels feeling cheap and just on a whole looking at least 5-10 years behind the competition
Nice car. I think there's better choices in the class for an all round daily / performance hatch though.
I know most of the comments are complaining about the lack of interior features in this car. But I kinda like it. It is really a track/rally focused car. Obviously probably to shed some weight to give it those legs you mentioned about. It's a fantastic looking car and they are finally bringing back track focused cars. Price is steep for a corolla, but it's to be expected under the GR brand as to what It was back in the day with TRD Toyotas. This looks more fun to drive than the tech heavy wizardly of the other brands. Basically going back to their routes while adding some modern convenience.
