    I’ve had the gen 4 2.0 gr sport touring since July 2022 and it’s a fantastic car. People saying that this is only a car for the elderly are missing out. I had an Octavia vrs before this and the Corolla is definitely the quicker car in real world driving, largely because of the immediate torque from the hybrid engine compared with the turbo lag in the Octavia. It’s also practically bomb proof in terms of reliability and very well equipped for the price. Seemingly gen 5 is even better.

    Enjoyed this review immensely as an owner of the first generation Touring Sports with the two litre engine and Excel trim. After 46,500 miles and three and a half years it has averaged 53mpg overall- the most economical vehicle I have ever owned. It's possible to achieve 60mpg (UK) without too much bother on rural or town routes, and even on a 70mph cruise on the motorway it will return 48-50 mpg. Very happy with it- only a dud 12 volt battery a few months ago spoiled the 100% reliability record, though I think this is a fairly common occurrence nowadays with a lot of cars. Would I buy another? Yup.

    It's crazy what sound the 18 inchers let out vs. what 16" wheels sound like, both in the inside as well as outside the car. I wonder if downsizing will ever happen in this aspect. If you buy the top spec, you always get the 18s, even if you wanted the quiet and comfortable 16s. With certain designs, like black or gun metal, even 16s can look good. And of course they're better for the environment... less consumption, dust flying from ground (matters in the Nordics) ;)

    I have the 2023 Touring Sport 1.8 Design on order (6 months waiting list, apparently!) I currently have the Icon Tech version of the same car which I purchased 2 and a half years ago.
    Your review at the time was influential in me making my decision to choose it.
    It's been 100% reliable of course, and achieves 50.8 mpg in summer, dropping to 58.1 in winter. The advantage of the estate version to me is that I can throw my bike into the back, and it's great for doing runs to the tip with bags of garden waste, etc.
    I've previously owned Toyota Versos in various forms; in my opinion, the Verso was one of the most useful and versatile cars Toyota have ever produced, for anyone with a family. If only they'decided to produce a hybrid version instead of discontinuing it!

      @@da911beast Starting off with less money, feeling "poor" is unfortunate, but beyond a certain extent it becomes an excuse. I was pretty much broke after bills and putting what little's left into investments, did this for over 10 years (wouldn't have needed this long if I was more talented), now I live a relatively comfortable life.
      What we do when facing constant adversity really counts.

    • @guillaumepelinski8512
      @guillaumepelinski8512 Před rokem +2

      @da911beast & @swong6757… so not spending thousands of euros on a car with the latest tech, better chassis and power just to drive from red traffic light to red traffic light, drop the kids at friends/sport, go visit family … and drive a real trip every other month at best… that classify me as « poor »? Cars are not assets, they are liabilities… the typically poor behaviour I see the most is people spending too much on a thing that makes them feel rich.
      And if you’re passionate about sport cars, you should just not comment on a video about the corolla, it’s just not the place for your passion 😊

    Just picked up a Certified '23 with 6800 miles on it. I freaking love it, so far. My only reservation is the CVT. I'm fine with the performance (def peppier than past base model Corollas), as long as the reliability is there. Hybrid was a lot more expensive for a fairly modest MPG gain and 29 fewer HP. I maxed out on the SE, plus, the one I got was literally the only 23 or 24 corolla on a lot in my area. Metallic Gray - didn't pick it, but I like it a lot.

    • @9a2er
      @9a2er Před 8 měsíci

      No worries there as it is not actually a CVT. It is an eCVT (or HSD) with a planetary gearset so the chance of that breaking down is about the same as a differential (because it uses the same principle) - so about none. No belts in there at all as in Honda and Nissan traditional CVTs.

As a graphic design lover, I also must say the spacing between letters is way off, very sloppy, and the two horizontal lines are unnecessary, makes it very ugly. Grrrrr. 😅 Personally, I much more prefer the German and French designs. Besides that, very good review once again!

      Why do Belgian numberplates have to look as any other number plate in Europe ? The colour never bothered anyone in probably 100 years except some German CZcamsr.
      Anyway the question of which colour to use was also asked by our Belgian government when they switched from 6-digit plates to 7-digit plates in the early 2010s. The white background would stay for readability. Some wanted black digits (especially the police so their cameras could better read those plates aka issue more fines) others wanted to keep "our" red digits. The compromise were darker red digits. Typical Belgian.

    Drove the precious model for 4 years and now upgraded to the 2023 business plus TS. Have to say I'm more impressed than I expected to be. Packed with options and more comfortable engine/drive-system. Also the lane assist works much, much better dan my previous car. I expected a bit better car, but I'm surprised how much of a difference it makes (but the extra options compared to previous first edition help with this off course).

    i honestly love it, it's comfortable, reliable and economical. nothing compared to the BMW X3 e83 i had previously.
    the better acceleration is everything this model needed, and the higher electric top speed. i'm really looking to buy the facelifted 2.0 hybrid now. the biggest turnoff are those low profile tires - stupid consumer trend.

    Great looking car, I really like the exterior design. Toyota's have always been a let down on interior style and tech for me though, but this looks a decent effort. Appears to be a simple, unfussy cabin and response times on the touch screen look decent. The great looking seats are set against really disappointingly cheap looking areas (those cup holders are awful) but that always seems the way with Toyota. Overall though, I like it a lot and this generation could become a bit of a high point in Corolla design I think.

    No wagon version of this in the US, and the hatch is too short for my XC skis, so my only remaining option in the US is the sedan. Of course the sawn-off monster-truck version, the Corolla Cross, where one little lazily-positioned junction box in the rear prevents you from putting in a spare tire and the cargo area is still quite a bit shorter than the estate/station wagon. So annoying. And if the 2 liter hybrid wins on economy, why is the 1.8 hybrid still the only non-SUV Corolla hybrid option in the US, where if you want the 2 liter you have to get a Prius or a Corolla Cross hybrid?

  • @paouvous
    @paouvous Před rokem

    On the last note, the more hp you use the better scenario for the 2L variant. Remember Top Gear M3 vs Prius fuel consumption show. It will only be if you really push past what is possible for the 1.8L but then there is no valid comparison to speak for.

    E-CVT is where it's at. Completely different than the old rubbish CVT with belt and pully drives. It makes full use of the very efficient (39%) petrol and electric engines, very clever use of planetery gears for continuous gearing and regenerative power, and actually makes for simpler mecanical parts. It's not a new concept, but nice to see on a Corolla. Anyway, Corolla Estate 1.8L will be my new drive, if I can find one.

    Also, with the current prices, I’m really thinking what would be the best option. If I want to have the matrix led headlights than I have to buy the highest trim, which is around 42000EUR in my country. Is there a way to tell how much EV range you get after X min of driving? For example, my commute is 45 min. 30 min average 70km/h then rest is city driving. Can I somehow know that I will have enough EV charge for city? I don't really know how E-hybrid works compared to plugin hybrids.
    Same with long distance driving. Say that im going on a 3h trip. Will it use EV, then only gas, then EV when it is charged and repeat like that or save EV just for lower speed?

    • @flitsertheo
      @flitsertheo Před 11 měsíci

      It doesn't work that way. The car will switch to EV or petrol/gas according to your driving style. Even at high speed it could use EV as long as you drive "economically sound".
      As long as there is gas/petrol in your car it will drive. It probably drives on EV only also, though with reduced power.
      The car recharges automatically (don't remember how that works, brake energy ?).
      There is so much to discover and learn when I receive my new Corolla.

    Sadly in Australia we do not get the 2.0 litre hybrid, only the low powered 1.8 litre hybrid, for reasons unknown. The fuel economy between 1.8 and 2.0 hybrids is almost the same (~5%?) but 2.0 hybrid performance is much better (7.5 sec versus 9.2 sec for 0-100kmh). Most of extra performance seems to come above >60kmh making 2.0 hybrid much easier to drive on motorways and on 80-110kmh country roads with better overtaking capability on single lane roads.

    I was really hoping the Corolla Cross would be a lifted wagon. To chase the Subaru Outback buyer here in the US and to offer a Toyota Wagon. But sadly nope.
    It's also very very annoying how much harder automakers try in Europe for small cars than they do here in the US. I was just on the Toyota Website here and absolutely no way to add the rear vents or connectivity. Same goes with the Civic.
    The hatchback is also significantly more expensive.
    No wonder people move to crossovers when a impractical sedan trunk isn't going to cut it. The Corolla Cross comes standard with rear vents. Absolutely ridiculous.
