  • Can/ Song: "Carlo"
    Canwr/ Singer: Dafydd Iwan
    - Can ddychanol sydd yn gwneud hwyl am ben y Tywysog Siarl, "Tywysog Cymru", ond eto nid oes dim byd Cymraeg amdano fel mae'r gan yn ei gyfleu. Yn wreiddiol fe gafodd y gan ei hysgrifennu fel protest yn erbyn yr arwisgo yn 1969. -
    - A satirical song poking fun at Prince Charles who's title is 'Prince of Wales', yet there is nothing Welsh about him... The song conveys this well. Originally, this song was a protest against the investiture of Prince Charles in 1969. -
Note: "Carlo" is a nickname given to Charles. The English translation of 'Carlo' would be 'Charlie'.

    English translation lyrics:
    "Carlo"
I've a little friend who lives in Buckingham Palace,
And Carlo Windsor is his name.
Last time I went to knock on his door,
His Mother answered and she told me...
    O, Carlo, Carlo,
    Carlo's playing polo today, today,
    Carlo, Carlo,
Carlo's playing polo with Daddy, Daddy.
Join in the song, peoples old and young,
Finally we have a "Prince" in the land of song.
He recieved his education over in Australia,
And off to Scotland did he go.
    Columnist of Welsh culture,
    Contributor to 'Tafod y Ddraig'
A member of the Urdd, a camper ever since I can remember...
    O, Carlo, Carlo,
    Carlo's playing polo today, today,
    Carlo, Carlo,
Carlo's playing polo with Daddy, Daddy.
Join in the song, peoples old and young,
Finally we have a "Prince" in the land of song.
Every week he reads the 'Cymro' and the 'Faner',
He reads Dafydd ap Gwilym in his bed every night,
The future of the language and country is close to his heart
He's a greater nationalist than the FWA...
    O, Carlo, Carlo,
    Carlo's playing polo today, today,
    Carlo, Carlo,
Carlo's playing polo with Daddy, Daddy.
Join in the song, peoples old and young,
Finally we have a "Prince" in the land of song.
    Oh yeah, Carlo, Carlo,
Carlo's playing polo today yeah, today,
    Carlo, Carlo,
Carlo's playing polo with Daddy yeah, Daddy.
Join in the song, peoples old and young,
Finally we have a "Prince" in the land of song.

For those of you who do not know Wales, the last two measures (where Iwan sings "La, la") are from the song "God Bless the Prince of Wales," an obsequious piece of doggerel glorifying Wales's fate as a subservient colony of untermenschen. "Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad dan ei droed..."

I'm a bit confused. The only version of "God Bless the Prince of Wales" is this one:
      Ar D'wysog gwlad y bryniau,
      O boed i'r nefoedd wen,
      Roi iddo gyda choron,
      Ei bendith ar ei ben!
      Pan syrthio'r aur wialen,
      Pan elo un i'r nef,
      Y nef a ddalio i fyny
      Ei law frenhinol ef!
      Among our ancient mountains,
      And from our lovely vales,
      Oh! Let the prayer re-echo
God bless the Prince of Wales!
      With hearts and voice awaken
      Those minstrel strains of yore,
      Till Britain's name and glory,
      Resounds from shore to shore.
I don't see the lyrics you included in this. Am I misunderstanding something?

I am from West Bengal, India. And was extremely surprised to discover that the native word for 'song's in both Welsh and Bengali is 'Gaan'. The indo European language family is truly something that binds humans.
I've been listening to this song on repeat for some time now. Yes, ever since I saw that episode on The Crown, which was my absolute favourite. Such beautiful music and such an honest rendition of this beautifully natural sounding language.
Also absolutely love the carricaturish background. Completely in tune with the nature of the song as a protest. However, any person who has seen the episode cant not feel empathy for Charles.

He's called the Prince of Wales yet there is nothing Welsh about him, nor has he any interest in the country and its culture, heritage and history...

The Welsh being forced to have English Princes isn't the real insult - The real insult is how the Welsh have been made to forget that they had centuries worth of Kings before they were relegated to being "Princes". They were known as Rex Brittanorum (King of Britons) for a Reason. With The likes of Hu Gadarn being legendary founder of Welsh (British) people and then real figures like Brutus, Caratacus, Macsen, Ceri, Arthwys, Hywel Dda, Iestyn Ap Gwrgan, Rhodri Mawr, Cunedda, etc.

The Welsh language is in great danger of dying, and relies on learners to keep her alive. I'm dreading the results of the 2021 census, as the numbers have been steadily decreasing for decades. This is because many foreigners have been moving into Wales, and making the small Welsh villages too expensive for the native to live in anymore. Please make the effort to learn Welsh, as we will appreciate it, it will open job opportunities, and will make you more welcome in our villages and country. I hope I have convinced you to learn Welsh, even a Duolingo course is enough. Thank you.

In fairness, Charles has paid massive amounts of respect to Wales since gaining that title. While the Crown edited his investiture speech a bit, his real speech did indeed raise eyebrows with hints of support for Welsh nationalists. Charles is far from perfect, but he does try which is extraordinary given the brainwashed childhood he was put through by the English elite.

@@alynwillams4297 Sure. The 21 year old insecure son of two domineering parents, a young man raised by all and sundry to believe tradition was life itself, should have taken a stand against something the male English heirs viewed as their right for nearly seven hundred years. It's just a royal title, for Pete's sake. Do you think if the Welsh had gotten that title back a few hundred years ago it wouldn't today be in the hands of some hereditary one percenter living far above the common person and just as out of touch as Carlo with his polo ponies?

One lyric I find very interesting in this song is “Ac yna lab i Scotland yr aeth o”, the use of the English name for Scotland (“Yr Alban” in Welsh) in my opinion this is trying to show how Scotland doesn’t have an independent culture or language (as Gaelic is almost extinct) so it’s basically English.
PS it isn’t just a name thing as he uses the Welsh name for Australia as “Awstralia”

    • @lewisnorth1188

No, it isn't a treiglad... it's regional dialect. Dafydd Iwan is from Sir Gaerfyrddin (Carmarthenshire) and there they say 'warae' instead of 'chwarae' =)

Not so sure about that .... I'm from "Cwm Gwendraeth" Sir Gaerfyrddin as is Dafydd Iwan, my family roots are in in Sir Benfro and Sir Ceredigion, and I would naturally say "Chwarae teg", but one does hear "warre teg boi" , maybe in this instance "warre teg" fitted the melody better than "chwarae teg" ? :)) We have lost words in my lifetime .... I was brought up saying "Oifad" (to swim) i.e. " rwyn mynd lawr i'r afon i oifad" ( the f is a V sound, ff being F). However, I hear very few young people using "Oifad", they now say "Nofio" (taught in school) I refuse to use it! for me it will always be "Oifad" I get a few young puzzled looks down at the leisure centre in Caerfyrddin lol, sad really! Apparently, down in Sanclêr they say/said? "Moifad"
