    I've watched a few videos about making eye contact as that's something I struggle with due to my autism. Murder Mystery and Makeup Monday used to be my favorite show on CZcams. Bailey presents it like hot gossip, but some of the stories really affect her, much like Simon, and it brings a lot of humanity to it. I think she might even get less into the gory details too. I've never felt like she was disrespectful to the victims, and it was always much more about the presentation style than the actual makeup, for me at least, because I only wear very basic makeup. It's just something to watch while she tells a story.

    A good portion of autistic people, especially tweens->young adults, feel that eye contact is painful. I was one of them and it took me decades to get better at it.
    Using youtube to work on it seems like a way to ease oneself into it until a live session can be tried.
    As a child adults would harass me because I hated eye contact so much that less than one second of eye contact really hurt. I'd shut my eyes tight and/or look down quickly no matter how much they told me to look up at them. They thought I was being disrespectful or had very low self esteem [maybe I had low self esteem because people kept forcing me to act or feel like them?].

      Yeah I "enjoy" watching her sometimes. It's not intended to be disrespectful that she's doing her makeup, because if someone were to *intend* to be disrespectful while covering a victim's case, you'd think they're going to do something more malicious towards a victim than multitasking while reviewing their case. Yes it's morbid to be able to do something so casual while discussing crimes, but true crime aficionados can become desensitized to the overall grimness to an extent. Also it's just broadly appealing to those who're interested by crime & makeup; *many* women are into true crime & more are interested in makeup

      I used to watch her on facebook a while back. She is great and usually commented in what she was talking about.
      I think she was one of the first to do this. I enjoyed the videos since the format and the way she talked made me feel like we are to friends having a conversation. It was kind of genius - she talked to you like one would to a friend and created a rather intimate atmosphare.

    I've known a good handful of people who actively avoid any eye contact at all and its a huge hindrance to in so many aspects of their lives. job interviews are almost guaranteed flops, no romantic partners, few if any friends. these people are otherwise fully functioning normal adults who are extremely quick witted and funny when you've known them for many years. no other behaviors or traits that would suggest autism spectrum. I was made terribly uncomfortable by direct eye contact when I was like 8 years old though and i remember it being a struggle. but learning the immense importance of eye contact is just part of growing up and I learned to love it (to an appropriate extent).

    • @jojo-pk
      @jojo-pk Před 3 měsíci +2

      It can be a normal part of growing up and for most people it probably is. For some people it's a lifelong struggle and this awful feeling never goes away. It's definitely debilitating because you have the choice of not looking and being able to hold a conversation or making eye contact but it taking up all your mental capacity and effectively shutting down the conversation.

    One of my favorite true crime presenters comes to the table looking exhausted, in comfy-looking clothes, her hair a bit out of place and wearing little to no makeup. She looks and sounds like she's been up for endless hours working on a nightmarish case, and is there to discuss it with her viewers in an honest and empathetic manner.
    I still have no idea if that's just her vibe, or if she's constructed it deliberately for the atmosphere, but it's so much more appealing than the weird make-up narrations. 😂

    Fun fact regarding liquid nitrogen. You can put your hand in it for a short time and not suffer any illeffects. However liquid amonia which is warmer than liquid nitrogen will freeze your hand almost instantly. This is because the nitrogen will noil around your hand, where as the amonia is chmically similar enough to the proteins and amino acids in your flesh that it will stick yo it and cool it rapidly

      I don't get it either, and think people perhaps have got their wires crossed. So scraping a blackboard gives me a physical reaction, just not a pleasent one. Then again, stuff like eye contact also confused me until I realised they don't mean physical and touching their eyeballs. Also vids with beeps to remind me to blink help.

    As a visually impaired person with nystagmus, (my eyes twitch… a lot) making eye contact makes it go into overdrive. Simon's bus story is weird to me because where I live, most bus drivers will absolutely NOT wait for you to pay for your pass. I've gotten into the habit of sitting down as fast as possible because the drivers will usually pick up speed the moment you're aboard. Sometimes, if you're struggling to come up with the right change or your pass has expired, they'll simply wave you on because they'd rather lose a couple bucks than be late. Hell hath no fury like a rider made late for their shitty job.

    24:20 I'm loving Astrographics myself -- it kinda slipped into my recommended feed, and at first I was thinking you'd just rebranded the Science of SciFi again hehe! Personally, I think you SHOULD do some more self-promotion -- you've got a lotta great channels, and I didn't even know you had started Astrographics till it just showed up.
    Way back when I was in college, I was planning to do a double-major of Journalism and Astronomy, so I could be either an astronomer or a science reporter (back then, every paper, magazine, and news channel had at least one dedicated science reporter -- how times have changed, right!?). But one year in, the University of South Florida decided that football was waaaaaay more important that all that silly science education stuff. So they fired all the astronomy department's staff, sold all the equipment to the Museum of Science and Industry across the street, and redirected the budget into their shiny new football program (which then failed to win any games for almost 20 years -- GREAT use of money, USF!).
    In a way tho, I'm kinda glad it turned out this way... journalism started doing a massive downgrade a few years later, with layoffs and severe drops in quality (the first folks they fired were the specialists, like the science reporters), and now it's dominated by those unve3rified bot-driven junk science channels :( Kyle Hill, one of the more prominent science communicators here on YT, did a video about those cheap channels that clutter up everyone's feeds a few months ago. They'll rip off regular videos and just have an AI voice re-read the script, usually with a lot of inaccurate fluff added in to hit those YT time markers.
