- The brain is our most vital and complex organ and it controls and coordinates all of our actions, thoughts and interactions with the world around us. It’s the source of our personality, our sense of self, and it shapes every aspect of our human experience. Yet most of us don't actually know or think that much about how our brains really work, and what we can do to improve its performance. Here are some highlights from my conversation with brain surgeon, Dr Rahul Jandial back on episode 76.
You're going to hear about how it’s never too late to start improving your brain health and how to go about it. We talk about how learning a new language can impact your brain, the powerful effects of music, as well as the importance of movement, intermittent fasting, diet and much more. This clip is full of practical brain boosting strategies that you can adopt immediately. I really hope you enjoy watching.

Top 4 practical tips given :
1. Get vertical
2. Change your diet , get into Mediterranean diet
3. Try to do unusual, puzzles or new things
4. Do something that is happy to your brain
Thank you soo much for the brilliant conversation
4.
We who are 80 deserve a mention too !!! We may make it another 20 years. I know it is hard for you to imagine. but I am healthy and my mind is good.
I agree. My husband is 80. He is healthy. He needs a mention too
I sure hope you do!! 👍🙂❤
My father had his mind until his heart gave out just before he was 98. His sister is 104 (105 April 20) and she has her mind and gets around, bakes her own bread. She's a showoff hahaa
Who wants to live past 80?
I want to be ushered into Glory by then.
My grandpa is 80 and is super duper vital !:) Lifestyle is everything
I had a 104 year old friend she has since passed unfortunately, but she lived the life you are speaking about. She intermittently fasted all her life , limited sugar, read new stuff constantly, walked up an down stairs everyday, etc. She was truly amazing and taught me so much.
1. Skip breakfast a couple hours a week/ 16 hours without eating. No sugar or carbs. 2. Take 5 minutes, 3 times a day for deep breathing. 3. Eat mindfully, consider the meditarian diet. 4. Exercise a couple times a week, strength training is awesome. A little more than you're already doing. Get out of the chair and walk, walk up the stairs . 5. Read something completely new sometimes. Develop a new habit. Creativity is great too. 6. Talk to yourself right before sleep(solve problems). The process of trying to learn is the benefit. The energy of consuming is so healthy for your brain. It doesn't matter if you master the learning! Learning to play music is very beneficial for all areas of the mind(especially kids).
What an awesome podcast!
7. Calm sitting, no phone, no internet, thinking about what you need to do, how you will do it.
8. Meditative breathing is beneficial for stress control- very important! The brain will send signals down to your heart. Look it up, deep slow breathing.
You two men are some of the most beautiful, handsome beings brought to our presence. Thank you for your intellectual content and for pursuing academic stimuli. You’re changing the world, one being at a time.
_the world IS change; what it needs, rather ... is rest; this is what their Presence presents. It is silent. The "intellectual content" is what? It is the carrier for that which TRANSCENDS time and space -- the world. The spirit calls for rest. It's rare. The world is but a mirror._
Be happy without reason and repeat again and again.
Pass on the poultry, especially any from commercial farming. Loaded with chemicals and antibiotics.
Uncooked protein or cured, dried, marinated
Having suffered from anxiety for decades the breakthrough for me came on the day that a person proved to me that anxiety is NOT in the mind- it is not a mental condition. Anxiety is in the body and we can control the body through breathing. The mind merely
Worries about anxiety in the body. Calm the body and the mind will follow. It’s a skill. Breathing works.
LIKE THIS HEALTHY SMART GUY 😊...EVERYTHING HE SAYS MAKES ...SENSE..I SHOCK PEOPLE I'M 70 SLENDER CREATIVE ARTIST AND LOOK FIFTY AND THIS IS THE REASON WHY THE MIND, BODY, SPIRIT, CONNECTION...AND NEVER EVER FIT IN...BE PREPARED TO STAND OUT, DON'T BE AFRAID TO BE UNIQUE, UNUSUAL, AND DIFFERENT!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH CONFIDENCE AND SUPPORT YOU WILL GIVE OTHERS!!!
I'm similar. Only 67 but slim fit active and creative. My dear husband is like my grandfather in comparison. So sad.
Awesome!
Thank you for allowing your guest to talk freely and be the star of your show! :-)
Not all hosts have that skill.
Thank you...I´m a brazilian people improving my english ...and breathing.....Wonderful...
I have been on 18/6 intermittent fasting daily for one year and feel very good physically and mentally very clear. I am 73 yrs old. Greetings from Miami, FL.
Thanks, I want to achieve that.
I admire the kindness and the generous sharing of fruits of you both' intellectual power and knowledge. You are internet spiritual larks. Namaste!
One thing that I have always been confused about is this notion that here in the Mediterranean, we are mainly plant based with occasional fish. We eat lots of meat and plants here in Greece. Including the blue areas. Most people here rear there own "organic" animals and we consume a ton of extra virfin olive oil, alot of people don't eat much throughout the day and have a big feast in the early evening (intermittent fasting) and we have lots of sunlight. (these are the things that we attribute to longegviety here. Not only eating plants).
Thank you!
You ate making such a positive difference in people's lives. A true physician!
That was a FABULOUS interview! I'm a retired operating room rn and prior to induction (to anesthesia) I would (when possible) hold my patient's hand, look into their eyes and ask them to breathe with me, long, slow deep breaths in to a count of 4, hold for a count of 3 and out through pursed lips for a count of 4 to relax them before they were put under anesthesia, and it really worked well. I also used the same technique for myself for stress and anxiety and to relax after a hard day in the OR. Again Great interview! Thank you : )
Two of a kind, amazingly knowledgeable and big hearted Drs, sharing and passing on their knowledge in such an easy way to be understood by all viewers👏👏👏👍.
When you say "even at 60 or 70"... It sounds like one should have brain deterioration at that age??
I'm a month away from 70 and my mind is far more active now than it was in my physically younger days!!
I love that you say this ; gives me great hope for when I reach your age , if indeed I do !
@@indiabliss You will if you wish it so!! We have great powers of manifestation!
As my mother used to say
"there may be snow on the mountain but there's fire in the furnace "!!
Long life and health to you!! 🥂
I am the same age as you and do not consider that I am old
@@bandit2048 Of course we're not!
It's a number not a state of being.
What is different in your life compared to your younger days if I may ask?
For all those who don't eat fish or animal products: some algae has the same omega-3 amounts as fish.
I am a Personal Trainer and the most important aspect that I have my clients practice is that your brain absolutely requires exercise and healthy food! It’s not just about the body. It’s about the mind spirit and body and what we believe affects how our body is…
A depressed person can workout and leave the workout in a completely different state of mind and body! Good stuff!
Okay I just pressed the point on the neck where the doctor pointed, and did a few breathes, and my stomach is totally waking up and making rumbling noises! Brain/gut connection? Wow.
Wow I had no idea that even the act of trying is making our brain work the best.
In folding in tempo or time Are use the metronome workings of 60 to the quarter note then you can double it and it’s 120 to the eighth note 120 is also the tempo of March time so if you think of any Washington post March or Sousa March your Find the tempo in your body with the memory of the music in your mind. This is something I was told by teachers and the tempo of 60 allows you to fit up to ten and more notes into the single click. It is also been found that if you memorize music at the tempo 60 your brain absorbs it and then you can double it or play it at the tempo needed. Plus the obvious things about the ratios the vibrations of strings when you cut them in half I find that fascinating this is not something we invented this is just how it works so A 440 Hz an octave lower is a 110 Hz or an octave higher is 880 Hz. This particular interview was just fascinating I really admire this doctor and I have watched his videos before. All of the things he said are correct and there is a flow state in performance but the state before you do the action will you calm your mind down you can lower your heart rate and actually head on control the most difficult parts of the music is where the mastery comes in and all of the work of in Laney information correctly happens. The happiest day of my life and times were when people started telling me after a concert that I made it look effortless ....when I was younger they used to come up to me and say geez that looks really hard, you play on that big string bass. That is when I knew that I was absorbing things correctly and performing correctly. I cannot say enough about how music clicks all the boxes for me and I love to perform and I cannot wait to perform for a crowded concert hall when this pandemic is over thank you for this video
Try to find "Happiness" How beautiful exactly what the Dr ordered.
Merci 🙏🏽

Try taking yoga classes for breath and mind connection. I am 61and I teach yoga 3-4 times a week. For 45 minutes I tell people how to breath, when to breath and what body part to move all at the same time. Taking full inhales and complete exhales cleanses the mind and super oxygenates the blood which oxygenates the tissues including the brain. At the end of class everyone lays down for 5 minutes to integrate mind body connection.
That's it..Great...yoga really helps..especially the breathing in meditation. 🙏⚘
Enjoyed it immensely. Thanks much!
Good interview
Good stuff, ,,,16 hr, fasting is great to do.
Thank you for your information! I need to change some of my habits to ensure my brain operates at its best!
Thank you!
I am fascinated with this stream of informations.
Fantastic
Deep breathing has been of enormous help to me. I didn't know how. Now I guess I know a bit. Thank you.
The best thing about playing music is that you’re always learning even if you’ve been playing music for 45 years
The last3+mins are *gold!💯 @17:25-Top4Tips!
* #GoldJerry!
This is a super conversation. Will help every one find a better life👍👍
Loved the info on partial fasting- been doing it daily for many years- works for me! Great interview! I'm going to u
Teach the 3,4,5 breathing to my students!
Can you explain more about breathing technique.
Very interesting. The nutrition and physical exercise and exposing it to learning new things and new habits. Thank you for sharing with us. I am very interested in the brain. It’s complex and it controls everything. The mind is the most powerful organ which makes it more interesting. It’s basically YOU!
So enlightening and reinforcing! Thank you Doctors!
I did it and from my own experience I can tell it is not possible for most of people because lack of self discipline
Diet in the first two weeks will cause tummy ache and mood disorder Just simply because you are hungry and can't have your snack whenever you want
great content!
Brilliant
I daily do PRANAYAM BREATHING YOGA FOR 30 MINUTES AT SUNRISE...
Excellent 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I also practice IF. Feel very comfortable those 5 days of the week.
The best: do more, even standing and moving, watch your diet, find some content, puzzles, read, do things that make you happy!
Simplicity was,is,will always be liked a lot all the time, most of the time to a greater extent
I wish the nursing homes would have Healthy Food for patients on tube feed. I have a son with traumatic brain injury and his tube feed is full of corn syrup and corn powder. Can somebody help me with this?
Love you.
Too
Practical tips from you both. Is it just breath cadence or also the quietening of the wandering mind in the set cadence? Also 2 rules on cadence one from each of you. Which is better?
Breathe :)
Thanks a lot to both of you for sharing your valuable knowledge.
All this should be a 15min at least for every start and end of day for all kids. We will eliminate exiety.
Two handsome doctors with great voices in one video. I’m not sure what to focus on 😄
You wanna tap that C. W.
@@AR-jo5vv loool
Lol..Dr Rahul is too handsome indeed
C. W. I totally agree
Focus on the subject not on the guys.
Just summarized the whole content of this interview in 2 pages which I'll be reading quite often to remind me of taking action to improve my brain function and my overall life quality. Thank you.
Learning is important. The process not the results. A language, music for example
I'd love to see more of the research that would say quality red meat isn't part of a healthy brain diet though. So much nutrition in meat that can be beneficial. Meditteranean is most researched but not the commercialized version in a book but how those people eat naturally locally, seasonally.
Can you talk about what helps with depression
I love the info on how to keep the brain vital, but I've never understood why Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh had a massive stroke at 88. Yes elderly, but for someone who cared deeply about meditation and meditative eating it doesn't make sense. People that abuse themselves make it to older ages without strokes. Can anyone shed light? Not that we shouldn't follow all this very valuable advice.
Individual karma is responsible.
There was this phenomenal drummer named John Blackwell ( drummer for Prince ) ….
He was a genius on the drums as far as Odd Time Signatures were concerned . Also he played open handed ( Left hand hi-hat / Left leg hi-hat foot pedal / Right hand snare and Right leg Bass Drum ) ….. this is considered unconventional .
Sadly he passed on from a brain tumour.
Wonder what Dr Jandial thinks about this .
yeah Ive had creative thoughts before bed and forget when I wake up
Thank you so much for this video… you have no idea how much I needed every piece of this information… well.. you probably do… 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I call that "flow state" as "autopilot." Some may call it zen, or jazzin.
