What does the word forgiveness mean to you? If the very idea of letting go of a past hurt makes you feel indignant or upset, then listening to this podcast could be one of the best gifts you give yourself.
Today’s guest wants us all to understand why forgiveness matters for both our mental and physical health. Dr Frederic Luskin is a clinical psychologist, researcher and speaker who has been teaching at Stanford University for the past 30 years. And as Director of the Stanford University Forgiveness Projects, he has taught tens of thousands of people to live happier and more fulfilled lives through the practice of forgiveness, gratitude and meditation.
Although 20 years old, his book Forgive for Good: A Proven Prescription for Health and Happiness, is as relevant today as it ever was. Based on groundbreaking scientific research, it provides practical strategies for letting go of grudges and resentments. And it offers startling insight into the healing powers and medical benefits of forgiveness, and its profound impact on our lives.
Fred explains how our past hurts are stored in our bodies. People who are able to forgive are physically more relaxed. Their blood pressure and central nervous system normalise, their perception of pain lowers, their risk of depression and anxiety goes down. Crucially, their relationships are more open and trusting, so they feel less alone.
This is such powerful knowledge to have. Most of us can probably think of an example where we’ve allowed something that’s happened in the past to sabotage our present. Not letting go of old hurts can be a way of trying to protect ourselves and control the future. But Fred points out this is a coping mechanism to stop us acknowledging when we are vulnerable. True resilience means sitting with that discomfort and learning that it will pass.
Of course this doesn’t mean we don’t have a right to be devastated if our partner has an affair or our boss treats us badly, for example. It’s vital to feel the hurt and process your feelings, says Fred. But if you’re still living in the negative emotions months or years later, it’s time to move on.
If that sounds easier said than done, rest assured that Fred has plenty of inspiring examples and practical suggestions to help you forgive. He is adamant that forgiveness is a choice and a skill anyone can learn. And you start by giving yourself permission to enjoy your present and future, unbound by the past.
I really enjoyed my conversation with Fred and completely agree with him that forgiveness is an undervalued human skill. It may feel hard to access, but it is a brave choice and one that in any given situation will trigger a cascade of rewards. I hope this conversation prompts you to reconsider some of your past hurts and move forwards with self-compassion and freedom.

    Once a cheater - always a cheater, the rest what you are saying is just an intellectual-mental diarrhea! Would you ever want to analyse in the depth why and what a bored or poorly brought up person went through whilst you were out making many and looking after family financially et cetera. We all had various stressors throughout our childhood or young adult stage, but a decent person know their limits. I had many opportunities during my long career to cheat on my wife with a younger women... what would be the excuse? My father left? Yes, he did, so what? I am giving up your podcast, actually.

    I must say I believe stress is a major factor trauma fear these are all roots and unforgiveness is another major one because this one causes bitterness hatred and this effects your body our bodies are amazing it’s not stupid so you forgive for yourself and let go. Live a peaceful life don’t allow others to influence your life. What I do is I eat what my heart desires I don’t abuse food I walk I pray and I’m thankful to my God everyday for my life and food and health. Be content simple as that. If you’re getting sick because of your job or situation you’re in charge change it you have that power to change things for yourself if you don’t then just except your fake. Only two choices which one?

    Guys, just so you know, I had Hashimoto's on and off for about 30 years. Then I started taking vitamin D for many reasons. After 6-7 weeks on 6,000 IU a day, Hashimoto's disappeared. That was last autumn, it's still not back. I'm on 4,000 IU now.

    Sorry, i normally like your podcasts but this man is too frustrating to listen to. He says an answer is to remember a time when we were loved. Like it is that simple! What if, like me, there isnt a time when we were loved to remember? Dissfunntional parents do not set us up to make loving relationships. Some if us go through life never having experienced being loved but just have a life of abuse and people who see your past damage and take advantage. Some of this may be useful for those who had a reasonable start and then suffer some trauma, but for those who's trauma started at birth, i dont see it is helpful at all, in fact it comes across as demeaning

    I've decided that avoiding these lengthy, medically-jargoned, *contradictory* "lessons" will ease stress. One doctor says spinach is good for you, another says spinach contains oxalates that are killing you!!! While there appear to be fundamental "truths" that are somewhat agreed upon, each day there's more information that overrides yesterday's information -- talk about stress-inducing!! Thank you, Drs. Chatterjee and Lustig for today's take. I'm now going to watch some "Everybody Loves Raymond," and laugh.

    Thanks for the great video. The biggest thing is for people to engage and learn about food. I'm of an age when we learnt cooking at school. We never had extreme processed food at home and I love cooking. The old adage "You are What you Eat" still stands. I just watched a very interesting discussion around Weight lose drugs and diet which was so interesting czcams.com/video/0YMnHNIuK3M/video.html Japan seem to educate their children from a very early age about diet. Wish the UK would look into this subject. Long form discussion on CZcams is an excellent source of information. Well done

    The idea that everyone is doing the best they can is ludicrous. Have you never met a person.thst delights in making cutting remarks, savaging reputations, gossiping and undermining? Do you seriously think people like this don't know better? You two stink of privilege. People are nice to you because it pays them to be, and you have the wherewithal to escape when they're not. Maybe that's why you keep using marital infidelity for your examples. Infidelity is really nothing compared to deliberate cruelty.

    Utterly banal. You can't just make yourself feel things to lower your blood pressure. I come from a large, emotionally abusive family that has furnished me with almost no good memories at 60. Like many people from such backgrounds, I became a target for emotional abusers in my social, professional and romantic life. I put up with their toxic bullshit instead of fleeing, presumably because I was entirely accustomed to taking it from my disgusting family. Eventually I had the good sense to flee my hometown and put most of these people behind. But the experience has made it difficult to form new relationships. The forgiveness that you are grossly oversimplifying is probably easier for you because whatever happened didn't leave you lonely. Much easier to come to terms with the past when things are going well in the present. I find this idea.that some piece of shit can't live in your head without your blessing callous and ridiculously simplistic. You seem to have no understanding at all of trauma. I'm an hour into this talk and there has been not a single tip on how exactly you rewire a mind that is deeply resistant to forgiving. Just repetitive insistence that one do it. I can't believe people pay for this.

    I am 75, have atherosclerosis. Can I eat unlimitied fruit? I have gotten rid of fatty liver and I have no added sugar or processed food in my diet. My cholesterol is in normal ranges. I do have kinda high triglycerides. I drink water and about 16 oz of diet soda a day.
