    My guest today believes that the single biggest problem with our health these days is not that we carry too much fat but that we don’t carry enough muscle. She believes that if we start to focus and prioritise our largest organ - our muscle - we can burn more fat, improve our body composition, decrease our risk of disease and increase our energy levels.
    Dr Gabrielle Lyon has a doctorate in osteopathic medicine and is board certified in family medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois and completed a research & clinical fellowship in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics at Washington University. She is the founder of the Institute for Muscle Centric-Medicine™ and the author of a brand new book, Forever Strong: A New, Science-backed Strategy for Aging Well.
    Dr Lyon first appeared on my podcast about 18 months ago. In that conversation, she made the compelling case that the quality of our lives is directly related to the health of our muscles. She explained how having more muscle can improve our metabolism, reverse insulin resistance, reduce our risk of disease, protect our skeleton and improve our mobility and balance. She also explained the critical role of resistance training and the importance of consuming adequate protein.

    I loved this. I'm 57 in February and run Marathons and Ultras. I love showing up for myself. I raised 6 kids literally on my own while Hubby worked away for 25 years of our 36 years married. I train 2 hours per day 7 days a week as well as running a farm and huge house. It makes me proud of being healthy in older age. I used to smoke and gave up in 2006

      My family is grown up now but when I started running 18 years ago I was able to leave my younger Kids with the older ones. There is a 12 year difference between youngest and oldest

      ​@@krisjepsen8168As a PT, I rarely recommend people train for marathons. They're subjecting their bodies to brutal, excessive, relentless punishment. Extremes level out the health playing field.
      I often encourage 10-20min of strength training, and daily walks after whatever meals you can "set your standard" to do. Mine is on lunch break at work.. outside whenever above 40deg, on our treadmill or walking laps around the building on cold days.
      Most can't believe I used to weigh 247lbs 9 years ago at my highest. Food order matters too: Prioritize protein & veggies FIRST for 36.7% less postprandial glucose at the 60 minute mark, btw. That was a shocking study.

    I love the neutrality comment as I like being on what I call 'an even keel', I don't go way off track with my food on special occasions like Christmas, I train consistently, I like a social drink but I have a limit I stick to each time and I don't get big highs and lows anymore and I love it!
    I'm 50 and I feel like I'm in the best mental and physical health that I've ever been.

    The talk 18 m ago changed my life! I got more into learning about exercise, nutrition and values in life. I have made changes in the last 6 months that made me feel better than I did in my 30s. My objective is to be in the best shape of my life at 50. I have time to work on it and I can’t wait to see the change in the next 6 months!! Can’t thank you enough!!

    I agree maybe this will work for some people. I believe it’s all about genetics and luck. My Aunt will be 100 year’s old on the 25th of January 2024. She is a medium weight lady who never exercised and eats anything she wants. She believes moderation with food is important. She walks fine without a walker just slowly. Her mind is very sharp, great memory. Good long and short term memory. She had many stressors through her years and just dealt with it. She worked as a 1st grade teacher through her 70’s. She also, doesn’t sleep well, she wakes up around 3:00 am and goes to sleep at 10:00 pm. Oh she doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol. Go figure. I hope, I will inherit her DNA.

    Such a great conversation, packed full of great advice, information, and wisdom.
    Think of it as planning for retirement. We do that with our money to make sure we are financially healthy. .....we need to have that mindset for our physical well-being, as well.
    In my 60s I was morbidly obese, walked with a cane due to arthritis and couldn't walk briskly without gasping for air. I'm now 73, I'm 100# down, I do kickboxing ('cuz they let you hit stuff 😂), and I exercise every day, even if it's just an hour on the treadmill. I feel better than I have in decades. If I skip exercising, I usually regret it, but, I never regret doing it & always feel better. Wish I would have changed things decades ago, BUT...... it's never too late. ❤❤❤

    Wow, powerful science! I've been thoroughly motivated to focus on more muscles. I'm 64 and I'm blessed with a genetic predisposition towards easily developing and maintaining muscle, I'm very active, I've been eating incredibly healthy, prioritizing protein for most of my adult life. Just this weekend, after an energetic performance of jazz, soul and jazz for three hours, people freaked out when I told them my age. This happens all the time, generally guessing I'm late forties.
    But this is going to make me even better. I also understand that I'm youthful because I'm muscular.

    I absolutely LOVE what you shared about resilience, courage, strength. The context for all of the other choices and behaviors. I appreciate the language of CHOICE. People often talk about “belief”, but choice is different- and I believe it is more immediate and available. It’s extremely helpful. We get to choose not only what we “do”, but the context of who we choose to be, what we choose to honor, who and what we choose to become. The piece about neutrality- gold. You are obviously not only leading in the outer realms, but also as deeply committed to the inner work. It *shows*.
    I adore Gabrielle Lyon, and while I have always loved her science and content, I’ve never heard her make these kinds of distinctions before as she is doing in this interview. I also want to thank Rangan Chaterjee for creating such an authentic and powerful space. Grateful for who you two are- the wholeness and presence, couple with what you know and share.

    This is so true. I am 80 years old and for past 6 years I have stuck to a 30 minute program of Yoga every morning. I am sure it has enabled me to cope with loss and grief and other life issues.

    Keto, U-tube & a $15 weighted vest. Pushing towards 70 & healthier now, feeling better now than in my 50s. Educate urself & take action. Small steps everyday. Progress not perfection 👍

    I had a gym membership at 14 years old & played field hockey. I was a runner for 20 years. I now walk outside, weight train or use a stepper at home. Started alternate day fasting 💃💃

    Fantastic info on how exercise/strength training can offset lack of sleep. For those with sleep issues due to chronic illness with pain, something sleep hygiene doesn't completely help, this gives the individual tools to make real changes.

    I am a 35 year old Asian female, former Healthcare Assistant, born and bred in the UK. I have Bronchiectasis, Aspergillosis (respiratory allergies), Fibromyalgia, PCOS, Fibro cystic breast syndrome, regular UTI's, IBS, recurrent depressive disorder and ADHD. I considered myself relatively healthy and fit before all my diagnoses 7 years ago. I'm at a point where I'm not properly sleeping, eating, have no job, can't keep up with relationships or social engagements. I'm so desperate to get better and enjoy a healthier life. I know most of my conditions won't go away permanently but I'm wanting to get back to some sort of a functional life. I would do anything to improve my current situation. But there is so much conflicting information out there in regards to diet, nutrition, sleep, exercise, etc.
    I wish I could access Dr Chatterjee's clinic for a personal assessment and plan to recovery.

      Why don’t you listen to Dr Ken Berry on CZcams and follow his advice, particularly the Carnivore way of eating, for at least 90 days. I’m sure your symptoms will improve. Good luck.

      Hello, I feel your pain, I have bronchiectasis, NTM lung disease, IBS, fibro-cystic breast, poor sleep and a rare cancer that’s in remission. I’m a loner as well but I forced myself to join a nearby gym. I’m retired so I have the time to nebulize at least 2x a day and go to the gym and use weight machines and also cardio. The gym was my best move but before it I did walk most days 2-3 miles in nature which I loved but winter drove me inside. You have the power within you to make small changes that may lead to big changes. The exercise helped my depression I felt over my health issues. I recently started intermittent fasting which helps your body heal while fasting, it’s made a great change as well. Check out Gin Stephens books, I liked Fast, Feast Repeat. Best of luck to you!!!

    Medicine borrowed the term stress from engineering. Sadly, they misused/misunderstood the term. They confuse the external stimulus - the stress, with the response (of the organism). Medicine uses the same word for both. The response of the organ/structure should be called strain: a totally different thing and entirely dependent on how the body responds.

    At age 45, I don't eat healthily, do yoga and go to the gym to live longer. I do it to improve the quality of my life while I'm here, no matter how long or short my life is. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. I could be hit my a bus today! I have no fear of death whatsoever, cos I die every single night for 8 hours every time I go to sleep. I don't know i even exist.

      I love nuts . I would love to have 8 hours sleep .I have started to run two to three times per week and still not sleeping enough . 2 to 4 hours per night after a freaking run of anything between 5 to 10 km’s . I also walk many km’s everyday with my little girl ( doggie) I am also nutty 😂

    Thank you for sharing this topic it was inspiring, I didn't understand all the medical terminology but what I did grasp on to that strenthing the muscle is very important and having the right mind set about our self health and wellbeing this is something to really help people like myself I don't make New years resolutions because they don't stick for many of us but I am going to take one day at a time to do better about taking care of my health 😊thank you both again may the Lord bless you both in your work continually.     The doctor mentions she did her residency training in a nursing home. In my experience of nursing homes in the U.S., conditions for the elderly are terrible with many patients kept in bed much of the time and given no exercise or exposure to sunlight. Meals are high in sugar and refined carbohydrates and low in protein. Trying to change that will take an act of congress.

    My father opened up a weight training studio for women 45 years ago and taught me how to safely train women how to get strong, burn fat and sculpt their body through light resistance weight training.
    I was shocked at the amazing results I got along with our members. I’ve spent my entire career in the fitness industry and believe that weight training is the best way to get strong, lean and healthy.
    I agree with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon about the importance of building skeletal muscles and eating a high protein diet.
    I don’t believe in promoting lifting too heavy for women unless they know what they are doing.
    My philosophy is the least amount of extension to get the best results.
    I just had my 69th birthday and body is in pretty much the same shape as when I was in my thirties, I have yet to get aches and pains (thank God) and I feel great.
    So yes weight training is amazing for the body!

    For me, the best work out buddy is my dog. I would never say no exercise today. He loves to hike, walk, paddleboard, swim, play and go to different places. He doesnt care if its raining, snowing or -20C.
    We both love being outdoors and hate gyms, treadmills and the like. For me they are about as much fun as hospitals and dental visits. There are many ways to get a good workout without gyms.
    I highly recommend fostering a dog over getting a trainer especially if you dont have much money or you are not sure about buying a dog. So many dogs in shelters would love to get out and play with you! Be aware many aren't so good on a leash so there might be some resistance training before you teach them!

    I have a mini trampoline n my house. When I get up in the morning and I don't feel like working out I just after I get my Sun. Look while your coffee is brewing just go jump on the until your coffee , 30 minutes later I'm having my coffee 😊😊 easy peezy thank you both for a great conversation ❤❤

    'Courage' response to stress is taught to front line workers - firemen/women, ambulance workers, policeman and of course in our military. This is not 'new science'! Gabrielle didn't touch on those who 'react' negatively to stress with verbal abuse/lashing out etc. I would have been more interested to know her answer to that response!

    Yoga is amazing, walking is amazing. I have Fibromyalgia and that is a muscle skeletal issue, I have poor sleep and highly stressed all the time, regrettably I also have Familial Hypercholestemnia (3 gene). I have insomnia and it’s no fun.

    Exactly, there are so many workouts on youtube that one can do... Body weight, cardio, hiit or with some simple equipment such as band or one pair of dumbbells. You just need to want to do something for yourself.

    I think there is a lot of resistance to doing resistance exercise.
    Women will say they don’t want to be muscular.
    Very unlikely they will due to their endocrinology.
    Others will say it’s boring. I would reply you must be doing it wrong.
    Sadly I think it will be a small percentage of people who will experience the feeling of well being that comes from investing time in nutrition and exercise. Many just want to plop down in front of a screen shut off the body & brain and pop pills to manage symptoms. Sad

    Also keep in mind she is a weight trainer and lifts massive amounts. This contributes to her point of view about protein. I respect her and have followed her for a while but she is promoting a dangerous way of life when she promotes vast amounts of protein.

      not vast amounts with nothing else. From her research and others, ingesting protein is beneficial for the development and maintenance of protein.

      I think protein is okay. It helps build muscle but animal protein is problematic. Read the China Study. Good protein is beans, tofu, peas, some protein powders and bean curd noodles. I eat 128 grams a day of plant protein. Animal protein activates cancer cells.

    I am a cyclist and former athlete ravaged with CRPS and/or Fibro. My PCP doesn't know anything about this. What do you do to find the right doctor? There aren't any here -- all of them just treat the symptoms with meds. Been dealing with chronic pain for many many years, often debilitating.

    As you become older, to trigger this muscle tissue, need high quality protein 1g to equalant to 1g bodyweight. My question is, is it good to take this much of Protein, thinking about liver and kidneys?

    Thank you for an inspiring and informational talk. I recommend blood flow restriction training which you can do with any exercise. It adds to all the exercise we do by activating the short and long muscle fibers, in addition to a whole lot more too. I got exposed to the Kaatsu brand and love all that it's doing for my skeletal muscles over the last 2 years. If you haven't heard of it, check it out. Thank you again!

    None of them who advise lifting weights advise how to deal or avoid muscles getting really stiff and inflamed? I lift, i get very tight muscles which creates me different and unpleasant problems and pain. No the weights are not too heavy I get the same from 1 kg if i do many repetitions, apparently if you don't train for muscle failure no benefit. Haven't heard any advice....

      Proven fact: they are blue zone centurians because of their communities and families, not exclusively because of their diets, although whole, naturally foods are primarily consumed and not much animal protein. Not knocking meats, there's just a time and place for everything. And gut make-up has to be considered also because at a certain age our gut constitution does not want or require the average amount of meat say a 40yo would consume. I'm in my mid 50s, not vegetarian yet however I'm sure my animal protein consumption will decrease if the Lord let's me live to an older age.

      large amounts? more like -- regular amounts of protein from plants & animals. the Vegan Blue Zone Myth is bullshit. Okinawans & Ikarians (et.al.) eat lots of plants and also plenty of pork, fish, seafood, lamb, chicken, eggs, goat milk, goat cheese, goat yogurt, etc. ask anyone who's been to a "Blue Zone."

    Not keen on the fact that you think we aren't able to do this and that physically. If Wim hof can do it how come somebody else can't? My friend has no wim hof training and he can slow his heart rate and resps down incredibly low. Please don't encourage other people to think our minds aren't powerful because they are!

    She is not quoting evidence, she is largely expressing personal opinions, so i treat whst she says with caution. I totally agree that exercise is fundamentally important, but that is a consensus shared by almost everyone and well supportrd by evidence. I find the ZOE nutrition podcasts about the microbiome more trustworthy because they are consistently evidence based.

    Concerning the dopamine part, she's been listening to the Huberman lab podcasts. It's clearly not her own field of expertise and she needs to be clearer about this. Even worse is the part about standards and goals. There are hundreds and hundreds of papers that show the value of goal setting for motivation and behavioral change, her "standards" are just sub-goals or behavioral goals and there is a ton of research about this. She is supposed to be a scientist. She shouldn't try to re-invent the wheel with this sub-par common sense nonsense when there is a wealth of scientific, peer reviewed literature on a topic. That's the problem when experts venture too far out of there wheelhouses. She is great when she talks about muscles and protein, but she should stick to that... 🙄😒

    Leave us aging in peace madam, i want to be free...i eat healthy and move every day and i practice sport but i don't want to live too long... life is pleasures too. A good life is not a too long life. I want wrinkles, i want an imperfect body, i want grey hair, i want to be free. Men don't look me anymore and it is a very peacefull sensation.

      If you exercise, you will still have wrinkles when you get older, you will still have grey hair, the only thing that will be gone is pain!!
      trust me, I have a healthy grandma with so much wrinkles and white hair, and she is still able to play around with her great grandkids and feel no pain.

      I think you would still prefer aging gracefully instead of being helplessly frail. Functional training and building up muscles help with that. I certainly would want to be mobile and independent in my 80s, nothing to do with aesthetics.
