3 Little Habits That Changed My Life.

- One very important thing I’ve learned over the last few years, that has honestly transformed how I live my life, is that the biggest most impactful changes in your life are very rarely the outcome of big actions or accomplishments. It's actually the small simple things you do every day that end up having the most profound impact on who you are. It’s the little routines and habits that we commit to and stick with that end up shaping our days, years, and ultimately our lives. Today I'm sharing THREE HABITS that have completely changed my life.

1. Do dishes every night
2. Set out your outfit the night before and get dressed/ready right away in the morning
3. Declutter something every day
The idea is that these small daily habits have ripple effects on health, habits, and self concept
Thank you Precious 💎
THANKYOU! Video was long so this gave me the answers beautifully quickly!
Our daughter was suffering from deep sadness, we had spent hours in doctors offices and $1000 of dollars when one physician told our daughter “as soon as your feet hit the floor, make your bed and take a shower….even if you don’t feel like it”. Those few words honestly changed her life! She was able to wean off medication and is living her best life!! We were looking for earth shattering advice but it was a very simple solution for her to a very big problem! I understand this is not in place of medical attention but for her….it was changing the first few minutes of her morning!! God Bless from Texas!
Your daughters story really resonates. There are many very small changes to a person's day that done daily for a few weeks can really help raise a depressed person's mood enough to get past that utterly bleak, hopeless stage.
Things like doing at least one thing to improve your environment. It might just be throwing out a small bag of clutter or buying a houseplant or clearing your kitchen counters, but as long as its one thing every day.
Next is get outside EVERYDAY in the fresh air for 15-20mins, even if it's just the garden or walking to the corner shop.
Another is exercise, just 10 minutes even, on the home treadmill or dancing to a few favourite tracks or stretching.
Take a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement daily, force yourself to shower daily and brush your teeth and hair at a minimum. No need to go all out and shave your legs and body scrub and all those extras. Just 5 minute shower, brush teeth and hair daily at minimum.
Also, make a conscious choice to only consume online content that is positive, uplifting or educational.
There are lots more but these things done daily for a month rarely fail.
They won't cure your depression but they are enough to knock off that intensely bleak, dark, hopeless outlook enough that you can begin to see a possibility that things can improve.
These things are manageably small but can be added to once made into a habit. The 10 minutes exercise can be pushed to 20 or 30. The 5 minute shower, brushing teeth and hair can be stretched to adding a little lip gloss and mascara or having a shave for a guy.
Slowly they build up.
We rely way too much on medicines and unhelpful expensive therapy. Often we have the answers and the power in our hands.
That physician is a true healer😉👍
@@littleboots9800 my mom suffered from very bad post partum depression. She went to a support group .. this was 60 years ago… probably one of the first and it was called “ Recovery”.. growing up she shared many pearls of wisdom with us 3 girls . One of them was very simple and it was “ move your muscles”. It didn’t necessarily mean to work out but it was anything that forced you to get up off the couch and move .. it could be clean a closet, walk around the block, anything’s but sitting or laying down.. the other was “ change your environment “ and a third one I remember was “ endorse yourself” which basically means Pat yourself on the back for a job well done! Your post reminded me

@@theresabrown1272 These really are the small habits that once made routine can be built on. Definitely little gems.😊
One of my husband and I's habit changes that had a significant impact was having a nightly trade off of one person gets the kids to bed, the other does the evening tidy up. The kids start going to bed about 7:20 and are asleep by 8, so it effectively gives the clean up person a timer of about 30-45 minutes to get the house pulled together. It's been a great way for us to get the house in a calm state for the next morning, and you give that little burst of effort before you get to sit and relax in a quiet, clean/cleaner house before sleep.
One of my husband's and MY habit changes.... :)
Bed times are great. Parents need time too. My boys knew that they did not exist after 8pm. They learned boundaries and respect and we had time to take care of ourselves. Those routines held and baby sitters marveled that the buys just went to bed. Enjoy this time!
@@juliakersting4353 Lol I caught that too! Or... one of my and husband’s habit changes....
I've been retired for a year now, slowly getting lazier and lazier with each passing month. No longer in work mode routine. I came across your videos this morning and have been binge watching them, making notes "53 things to declutter today" etc. It's around 12:30 when I was watching this one, still in pj's. I paused the video to go wash up and get dress and I started to cry. I didn't realize the slump I had gotten into. It's true, even this little thing like getting dress and washing my face made me feel better. I'm looking forward to the ripple effects. Keep up the fantastic messages you are sending out. Now I'm going to tackle one surface top and one cabinet in my kitchen. Thank you, thank you!!!!!🥰🥰
Maybe you need something to get dressed for. When my mum retired she said she was busier than when she went to work with all her volunteer work. She has slowed down a bit now (she is 88) but she still goes out to her craft and Bible study activities.
❤
I recently had my first baby and was so upset about my body after, so i started working out 15 minutes a day, now hes a year old and i work out 30-45 minutes a day and have lost literally 60lbs almost 70, im in better shape than before i had him! Also getting organized but thats a story im still working on
This inspires me, thank you 😊
Did you change your diet as well?
Brilliant. There may be hope for me yet!
I didnt change my diet at all but i did buy a huge water bottle and everytime i looked at it i took a drink
Congratulations!!!!
3:22 #1 habit: clean the sink no matter how tired. 7:50 #2 habit: pick out what to wear the night before. 13:37 #3 habit: choose 1 small thing to declutter everyday
@ pilot rtc Thank you so much!
Thanks
Thank you very much
Thanks. Honestly - if this had been right to the point and she spent 3 min on each thing I would have watched it. I need tips … can’t listen to too much backstory.
Make m bed within 10 min of awakening. Pick up the family room of clutter etc BEFORE BED, oh the maid worked over night! Lol 👍🏻👍🏻😂😂
When I was a young mum I had three little boys and I tidied the house, cleaned the kitchen up before going to bed and showered and dressed every morning and I think sticking to this helped me get through the severe post Parton depression I had, this is really excellent advice
Callie, you inspire me everyday to do something to make my home better. I’m 83, have health problems and can’t get myself motivated everyday to do alot. But I do at least one or two small things to make my home at least look a little cleaner. You have taught me to organize better, declutter better. Love to watch your videos. You are so pretty and animated when you talk. Take care in these trying times. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks for your inspiration Gloria. I’m the same age and have health problems too, and these last 2 years haven’t been fun for us either, have they. Before I go to bed at night, I tidy my living room, and therefore it’s always tidy in the morning. I always get dressed first thing in the morning. Makes me feel better! But I just realized from Kallie that I haven’t been “putting on my face” for at least 3 years now. I think that will make me feel better. Now, gonna try to keep that sink clean and do a bit of decluttering every day. Thanks Kallie; thanks Gloria!
@ Gloria Stage I appreciate what you said about your own story, because I'm in a similar spot right now. I'm not as young as I used to be. Also, I've been chronically ill for quite a while. I'm on the mend, but I still have health and strength to rebuild. Thank you again for your inspiring words! 😊
@@tobascoheat6582 I encourage you to keep working to build your strength...that helps you to do your other health-building activities. Best wishes to you!
@@tyrajoanharris8179 Thank you for your kind, encouraging words.
Gloria Stage, you inspired me too by your comment! 😉 My own health issues and the isolation it brings have chipped away at my having daily routines to keep up. This was an excellent video, but I will be thinking of you too as I follow the examples shared! ♥️
At 77 I so wish someone like you had been around to teach, encourage and inspire me when I struggled my little ones and my house. I still feel overwhelmed as I remember those difficult days. Today's young mums are very lucky to have the message of your videos to help them along - I will stay for the ride too.
I'll be 76 next month and I've been a terrible housekeeper for ages. After I lost my husband, it's gotten worse. I'd love to be able to invite someone over on the spur of the moment. Maybe I can do that in a while.
You can do it, Vivian! I was afraid my mom would let her house pile up when her husband died but she started with one small bag or box at a time. She would fill a bag or box every day after work and put it in her car so it would either go to the trash or the donation bin on her way to work. She did that for a bit and then it snowballed. She unknowingly did a version of Swedish Death Cleaning and now her home is beautiful and minimalistic in a very homey way so it only takes her minutes every day to clean! One bite at a time. Honestly? I hope I remember all this if ever I am a widow. It takes a spine of steel to go on after losing the love of one’s life, from what I can tell. ❤️
@@viviandean2656 as she says do one habit and it will have a ripple effect. Sorry to hear about your husband 😢
@@viviandean2656 …you can get there, small steps lead to big changes. I’m 64 and have been through some tragedy and stress over the last 10 years. I lost my way. But these new habits have grown and they have lifted me. They will energise you. But do start small: clean sink, make bed and get dressed for the day. I hope it inspires you. God bless xxx
get the little ones if they can to help you a little..makes them feel good and its kinda helping you too
Other commenters mention making your bed as another good habit. And I learned the clean sink and get dressed habit from Fly Lady years ago. The thing about getting completely dressed, including shoes (I have a pair of indoor-only shoes, by the way) is that it takes the anxiety out of answering the door when you weren't expecting to have to deal with anyone. It also allows you to go do an errand when you have the time without interrupting your momentum by having to stop and wash your face, brush your teeth, comb your hair, put on a bra - etc - which can feel very frustrating when all you want to do is go mail something or pick up some eggs and bread or bring some books back to the library.
I got into the habit of not getting dressed during the 14 months I got stuck in my apartment during this pandemic. I also stopped showering regularly and some days I forgot to eat. Or I just snacked all day. I found that this really messed up my sense of stability, my moods, my sleep patterns and a host of other stuff.
When I had to put my dog to sleep in December, and my mother died two weeks later, everything went straight to hell in a handbasket, as they say. So, about a month ago, I started rebuilding structure into my life, one habit at a time, as Kallie talks about here.
I also keep track of things that I was letting slide... I have a piece of paper taped over the kitchen sink where I write down the date and time I did the dishes, because the collapse of all my prior routines during this pandemic gives me a weird sense of time - one day blurs into the next.
Likewise, I have a piece of paper taped next to the bathroom sink where I write down the day I showered. I also keep a daily list of my medications with blanks next to them where I write down what time I took those pills. And because the pandemic -- and grief -- triggered some horrific stretches of insomnia, I have a notebook next to my bed where I write down what time I went to bed and what time I got out of bed. All of these "records" help me be accountable to myself.
Now I am beginning the decluttering part of reclaiming my life, which is how I came to this video.
Kallie does a nice job of explaining WHY so-called "little" steps lead to other changes. They really do tell yourself who you think you are.
A couple of other things I've learned that might help someone else -- One is a quote -- unfortunately I've forgot who said it -- which is, "That which gets scheduled gets done." And the other is that clutter, especially extreme clutter, is basically the result of postponing making a decision. So when I catch myself thinking, "I'll just put this here for now," I remember that "for now" can turn out to be a year!
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your mum. Losing someone so close can take years to recover so don’t be hard on yourself if there are setbacks on the road to rebuilding your life.
If you are in a position to do so, have you thought about getting another dog to keep yourself in a good routine of going out walking twice a day and clearing your head? The dog would remind you that you both need regular care.
In the UK having Radio 4 in the background while working on tasks is like having people at home with you, with regular news updates to keep track of the time. It’s also good if you’re in bed with flu as you don’t have to open your eyes for entertainment.
I especially liked your last two points about scheduled tasks getting done and that postponing a decision causes clutter build up later. These are philosophies I need to incorporate in my own life. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
My very best wishes for your new improved life.
I dont have anxiety and i feel life is not always good but not always bad either. Smiling and laughing at yourself helps and thinking of others worse off than yourself does too cause there are. Take me for example Im physically disabled, wear braces and have sticks and im short too but i dont let it get to me as I said above it could be much worse.
@@Bonstergirl1 I think that the pandemic has been disorienting for a lot of people, including me. Also, right before it started, I ended an 11-year relationship with a live-in partner who had been psychologically abusive and who cheated on me with his ex-wife and at least one other woman, possibly also with his (female) minister at his church. So, that already had me in a weird state.
Then just as I'm starting to feel like healthy and sane me again, my dog gets sick, and I had to put him to sleep. My dog had been a normalizing influence - I had to get out of bed and feed him and walk him and give him his medicine, so there was a routine. And of course, he was a wonderful companion and kept me from feeling lonely.
Two weeks after my dog died, my mother died in a nursing home where we hadn't been able to visit her because of the pandemic.
All of that is almost a year ago. My Mom died on Dec. 23, 2020. So, it just has taken me a long time to get back on my feet.
I also am disabled, by the way. I have nerve damage caused by improper positioning on the operating table during heart surgery.
BUT I do feel that some things about my life are good, and some things are difficult. And yes, there are people with much worse problems. If we weren't living through a pandemic, I'd probably be back at my old job caring for elderly and disabled people, which was very satisfying work.
I do think that as I create order in my living space, that's going to help me feel more grounded. Also, I just sent some of my favorite artwork to a custom framer (taking advantage of a 70 percent off sale) and that's also part of my plan, to surround myself with the art I love. So, I'm just plugging away now, day by day, project by project.
Thanks for your comments, Sarah. I hope your 2022 is a good one!
Thank you for sharing!
I’m sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom and having to put down your dog. The sink challenge and baby steps that I also learned from flylady 25 years ago works! Fun to see it’s catching on to the next generation 😁
Okay, my friend, you are helping an old retired teacher. These three habits are working for me! I chose one place to clean every night, I declutter one area every day, and I (try) to get dressed every day. I am slowly decluttering my house because of habit #2 and it has been a GAME CHANGER because as I progress, I keep that newly decluttered place clean from that day on. Thank you! Things are looking pretty darn good around here.
That’s great! Cheering you on 😊… from me- that “not going to bed with a dirty sink” is my first small goal! So far on night 2! Lol
I have been helping people organize for over two decades and I can tell you right now, this is 100% accurate. These are the very steps I teach people from the beginning. I've always said, "There are few things better than waking up to a clean kitchen." Great video!
If I feel overwhelmed with the amount of clutter or cleaning my home needs, I break it down into sections. One day I might just clean the bathroom and on another day I might clean the bedroom. I usually find that once I get started, I end up doing more than I thought I could.By not expecting too much of myself, I'm able to do more despite low energy.
Elizabeth dumas, I used to be overwhelmed at work and someone said to me, “how do you eat an elephant?….one bite at a time.” I have always remembered this silly saying. Big tasks may appear too overwhelming, start small, clean the sink. Next day, clean a drawer out and organize. Keep going, declutter a surface. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Absolutely Elizabeth.
I was advised to use a timer. And when it rings u can finish or keep going. It takes the stress out of looking at it like it's a mammoth task.!!!!
@@janeyd5280 I like using the timer on my oven when emptying and loading my dishwasher.
I love that Olive immediately found a comfortable spot on the blankets you OBVIOUSLY folded for her. 😀 Appreciate your video, like always!
I noticed that too and I really did wonder if she folded those blankets just for the dog! Lol
My dog think that everything I do in the house is for her benefit and comfort. We do pamper her so I can see why she thinks that.
@@monicawilson896 yes they do❤
@@annettelemmer9649 That was cute 🤗
I thought that was such a funny moment.
Kallie - This is HUGE, your little dissertation needs to be offered to all mental health providers! I have heard about *small changes making a big impact, but you put it to the test and proved the cliche' is in fact a truth.* I saved this video to many of my subcategories because *you touched on so many elements that are relevant for me today.* Thank you, thank you, thank you! : D
Such a powerful video. The sink cleaning has led me to having a clean home (basement is still a work in progress!). I get dressed head to shoes almost every day. And decluttering just one thing a day totally keeps me on top of having a highly simplified home. I love hearing the science behind these small habits. They really are life changing ❤️
Oh: you’ve reminded me of the classic FLY Lady basics!
* Clean sink before bed
* Dress to the shoes each morning (no PJs or slippers)
* Declutter one small area each day
👍🏼
yes I thought she must have listened to FlyLady! They are her rules for the day!
Thanks for saving me time.
Yes. Flylady changed my bad habits. Years later I still have a decluttered home
Fly lady cleaning !
Fly lady or my mom. Turns out this is the sort of thing they actually taught in Home Economics in the old days. At least at my mom's school. Despite being raised with these instructions, I still had to relearn them myself at about the same age as here.
Marcia (TheFlyLady channel) has years telling us to "shine the sink" as a first step to a more simple, de-cluttered life. Many more channels use her method, which is perfect!, but I think it is right to give her the credit she deserves. A real pioneer! 😊 💪
(Marla 😊)
Love her!!!!!
I thought of the Fly Lady too!
Yes! I have the Fly Lady app on my phone. And to back up one more iteration - Pam and Peggy with SideTracked Home Executives (SHEs) who inspired Marla (the Fly Lady) to tweak their method to work better for her. I can never hear these reminders often enough! Off to shine, dress and declutter! One of Marla's (& Pam & Peggy's) suggestions - just set your timer for 15 minutes and do something - resulted in me getting the garage cleared out. (Yes - it took longer than 15 minutes - but an object (or person) in motion tends to stay in motion). Thanks for this wonderful reminder and example of the method in action! I too have become a recent fan of James Clear's Atomic Habits! :)
@@margaretanderson5531 Thanks for pointing out that Pam and Peggy started Marla on her journey to a peaceful home. They’re the BEST!
Love this video!
One weird thing I have found about not getting dressed during these stay at home pandemic days, is that nothing I get done before I am dressed seems to count as an accomplishment. It is only the things I do after I get dressed that seem to matter for that day. So the later I get dressed, the less my mind thinks I had a productive day!
I’m an 85-year old widow and I have always been a slob. I listened to your blog today. It helped me to get up from the couch and clean my kitchen sink. Then, I cleaned some of the paperwork off my couch. Not much but I started. Hope I get dressed tomorrow morning.
I am so impressed with your knowledge and sensibility and at such a young age! You are teaching this old dog (at 74) new "tricks". Keep up the awesome work. I look forward to your videos, they truly help me make better decisions.👍Not striving for perfection but a lifestyle I can personally live with. Thank you!
I agree!
Agree! She makes it sounds so simple but there is soo much wisdom in what she says!
I'm 61 and I love watching her! She has the best advice and tips. At her age, I was no where near her level of 'adulting'.
Ditto. She is indeed a wise soul despite being so young. I'm 73 and I find her to be very motivating.
Yes yes me too!!!
One thing I have learned started doing in the past few years is making my bed every day. Whether I am working from home or out all day, climbing into a beautifully made bed feels much better than a messy one.
So true. I always pull the covers back to air the bed. Occasionally i don't actually make it, and those times when i pull up the covers and then climb straight in always make me feel like a lazy slob.
❤❤❤ There IS freedom in discipline. I, too, found that tackling dishes at night and getting dressed even though I work at home have made psychological boosts as powerful as a green drink! Thx so much for your videos.
Kallie, I can't even tell you how helpful and inspiring this video is. As a woman in her mid 20s who also really isn't naturally organised and tidy, hearing your story and not only the tools, but the reasoning behind why the tools help, is game changing. You've helped me believe that it's possible to become the total opposite in a way of who I am now! I am incredibly grateful that you took the time to make this and other videos like this. They really are making a difference!!
When I was in high school I used to tell people that “if you look like shit you feel like shit, and if you feel like shit you look like shit and it turns into a vicious cycle” so the getting dressed thing is soooo true!
YES!!!!
My therapist says this same thing in a different way. She says that we create a world we think we deserve. So if we feel like we are not good enough, we're going to have a poorly kept home. Having a messy house makes us feel anxious and depressed and makes life hard. We are often embarrassed by our spaces. The fact that we can't keep a reasonable chore routine makes us feel not good enough, and the cycle continues. I agreed, but luckily she told me I didn't have to gain a huge amount of self esteem, just that I needed to set a small goal, like "I will not leave food or drink in my room when I'm not using them." I built on this habit. I'm not Mrs. Clean less, but I've come a long way.
@@wandmn2007 that is awesome! I started therapy a couple of months back and also got on medication (and stuck to it) and when I tell you now that I feel better I am donating and throwing things out of my house. My spaces are more organized and also my life over all. I know we’re strangers on the internet but I’m proud of you for taking care of your mental health and actively changing things you don’t like, virtual hugs!
@@swtstlr my Best "therapy" is decluttering. If my Space is clutter free, my mind is peacefull. If its building up (clutter), my mind gets worst, I have anxiety, so I have to declutter
@@tomaszwyszkowski2253 that’s awesome! Now, that I’ve “found” decluttering and I’m on my way to simple living i can totally feel the difference in how I feel mentally and no copay needed! 😉
Kallie, you’ve helped me so much ! One of the secrets to life is routines and habits. They’re the biggest stress busters ever. When I was a “relaxed” person I had shame and stress, and feelings of failure. I finally realized I had it backwards. I also used to wait for motivation. Now I do my routine and motivation, peace, and accomplishment flows from that. I wish you had been around when I was your age. You are truly a treasure and I love your sense of humor.
Your thought about not calling yourself a messy person but a tidy person hit me hard. Thank you for that. Words have power.
Hello I'm 62 yrs old... thought I had my stuff all together by now.. however after my brought of cancer/ chemo lost myself . As simple as , you made simple changes gives huge results. Yep finding these tips helpful. I give you a huge thank you, again of stuff thought I would have dialed in. Appreciate hearing it from someone else.
First indicator to my friends that I was ill, suddenly messy as all get out. For me, stabiliizing of my illness is that I can work on cleaning.
Cleaning up the sink before bed and dressing "to the shoes" are part of The Fly Lady's plan to getting organized too. It works!
A lot of people have been been influenced by flylady, knowingly or otherwise. She's awesome 😍
That's the only good thing about that witch on a broom, and actually she stole that from Pam and Peggy, the slob sisters
@@kbailey3238 HA. You haven't ever met her I bet. I have. She is a horrible human being. :( Very disappointing. The flylady was NOT the person who came up with this, it was the Slob Sisters and Sandra Felton (the founder of Messies Anonymous)
@@yesiownfrodo I got a lot of great tips from them too. The card system worked best for me.
@@yesiownfrodo absolutely, everyone is influenced by someone.
Oh thats disappointing ☹.
I loved the idea of her systems but hate the whole 'serve your man' attitude. Others have put a more modern twist on her way, which has worked really well for me.
Cleaning the sink before bed idea is the best habit ever, I’ve done this for the past month and wow my house is suddenly so much cleaner
I have a newborn and a toddler. I think giving myself grace and then trying to tackle what I can! But I am a true believer in the small steps and absolutely agree with your first 2 things you do!
I read Atomic Habits this summer. Changed my life. Recommended it to my 23 year old son. Life changing for him too ❤️
Thank you so much for showing up! Your videos and printables have changed how my family functions!
I totally agree with keeping the kitchen clear daily and also getting “dressed”. I’ve done both for years and feel so much better that I am ready for my day and also ready should someone stop by or whatever. My third would be to keep my surfaces clear. It forced me to have a place for everything so I can quickly put things away so I had to clean out the space to have that room. Love the video.
Cleaning the kitchen sink made a ripple effect both literally & figuratively. Love the symbolism! Water magnifying thought & intentions right there! She’s really onto something!
I really like the special touches that you've added in editing. 😃 Very fun and interesting
I've been following FlyLady since 2007. The sink is at the top of her list to start the process of organization and decluttrting. Sink Reflections is a very good book that has a 31 step habit process to help with self and home organization. I'm still fledgling after all these years, but also work full time outside of the home. Coming home, I'm exhausted. I like the 3 habit approach. It's doable and more realistic for me. ❤
Love her tools too:)
Been flying for years...
This definitely sounds like fly lady!!
Flylady got me on track in 1999 after my second baby. I learned so much and kept the habits going all this time.
Yes her methods are very interesting and this sounds just like it. Minus the religious overtones.
Cleaning your sink is the whole basis for the very successful FLYLADY, who has been around for more than a couple of decades. Loved your fresh take!
Dear Kelly,
I've really been struggling with depression since all of the covid lockdowns began happening in the UK. My family live in another part of the country. I also have chronic health issues. Sadly I still feel really low in mood even though things have improved in my country.
I'm so glad I found your video because it does help when I am able to complete step 1. I'm hoping it becomes a habit some time soon.
I'm definitely going to keep trying your steps and hopefully my mental health will improve soon.
Thank you for making this video, Vicky xx
Oh man, this vid really hit home, especially hating the drop ins, but getting my place to that state is overwhelming. My #1 is having the coffee table clean/cleared for Sunday night. It's a time that I enjoy relaxing and the added clutter/mess adds to the bummer that the weekend was over. It's a baby step, but I just finished and feel better knowing that future me is going to thank me for it. 😁

Wow. So good. At 64 years, I feel I'm finally getting my stuff together and you have managed to encapsulate pretty much what I have been striving to do. While I have been doing these three things in a general way, I did not have these very clear and simple goals in my head. I am part-way through Atomic Habits by James Clear, so I was thrilled to hear you quote his work as it makes sense to me too. Thank you Kallie. Your insights are gold.
Clean your sink nightly. So Flylady! Thanks for the reminder.
Love your graphics and clips throughout your video....makes it fun to watch... especially the pausing yourself....have to admit I rewind it a couple of times and always got a good laugh...thank you for your tips very useful....
Great video! I can testify that after years of thinking I was just a mess, I found the FlyLady system and started cleaning my sink every evening. It was up and down for awhile but I kept going back to it and after a time, I find that now I can’t stand to go to bed without the dishes done and the sink cleaned. But you are right…I found that when my sink was clean every day, now I couldn’t stand to have my counters a mess. Now I keep them clean, too. Always gotten dressed in the morning but I’ve just added moisturizing every morning. Today, I’m going to add your third hint - declutter a little every day. Clutter is my biggest challenge right now and you are so right - it affects how I feel about myself. Thanks for your great videos!
Ongoing routines and little victories are absolutely the keys to success! Thank you for this video! ❤️ 😊
The old saying… “As the kitchen goes so goes the house” … Is absolutely true and you and so many other CZcams channelers are gracious enough to share that in numerous, interesting, and delightful ways 👍🏼😄♥️👏🏼
I really appreciated this & your special effects - WOW!
I'm really glad that you fold the blankets specifically for Olive because the Queen deserves that comfy nest.
🤣
I really enjoy your videos, at this stage in my life early 60s ive been a mature student at Uni, had the career whilst managjng/being a mum of two kids (now in their 30s) a Nan to 4 great grandkids I'm active run do sports, travel etc, but clutter, keeping stuff and buying more stuff has always brought me regret, a bit of shame and being a bit overwhelmed by it all. Watching your videos is making me make changes, thanks 👍
The first thing I see after leaving my bedroom is the kitchen counter/sink. I never thought about it until listening to you, but it is soo therapeutic how good it makes me feel seeing that order. And it truly does cause a ripple effect elsewhere. Still working on the de-cluttering one thing a day. It's a challenge and work in progress. Thanks for the insight and inspiration!
So funny that we’ve come to the place that need a reminder to get dressed each day - but it’s SOOOO true!!! Thanks for the reminders. I’m seriously doing these three starting now. I’m going to shower and get dressed now lol.
Ohmagosh, you have described the struggle so well. So much shame and feelings of failure accompany seemingly insurmountable mess and clutter. It has always been my nemesis (never mind I have 8 year old twin boys). You are giving me hope, Lady! So appreciative of this video. Many thanks! 🙏🏼❤️✨
I watch a lot of your videos. Even though this is now 2 years old…I think it is your best one! Thank you. Signed a 70-year-old messy person.
KALLIE, I appreciate your informative style, your quirkiness, your attempt to give us the support we need to become our best selves. Thank you!😘
Thanks. So true. I tend to do my “dirty work” first, putting off getting dressed. That approach can go on for hours, & I can wind up still in my grubby dog-walking clothes at 3:00. Ugh! I also like a point you made awhile back about taking a quick shower vs. “the BIG shower”!
I used to always atay in my pjs while I did housework then shower and dress later. But first I start my day with coffee on the front porch.
Never a problem as we live on a quiet street and had a huge maple tree in the front yard. Storm came, damaged the tree, we had to have it removed. First morning after that I was sitting on the front porch having coffee - yes, in my pjs. Here comes a neighbor over to chat about the tree. I had to hightail it in the house for blue jeans. NOW I get dressed before coffee on the porch.
@@bethheerten1132 That’’s too funny! We sound like soulmates b/c that is EXACTLY what I love to do-have my coffee first thing, preferably while sitting on the front porch. I too live in a quiet neighborhood. I have 2 dogs, so now I have to put on my “leftover” clothes to take them out, so I usually just wear those while doing housework & yard work. I’ll try to turn over a new leaf as far as showering & getting dressed sooner. I tell myself sometimes, “Hey, it’s not like you’re going to the prom, so you don’t have to shave your legs, put on makeup, & get gussied up!”
I guess if I had a dog I would definitively have to put on real clothes.😁
Omg so true. I do the exact same.
Vivian, you are describing me at this very moment, including that it's 3:00 and I'm about to walk my dog. 😂
The dogs like, “Hey! Thanks for the comfy napping spot!” 🐶
I LOVE, LOVE, ABSOLUTELY LOVE, this video. Thank you so much. I suffer with depression from time to time, and this video is so true, and I will use it as a marker on my mental health scale now. Thank you so much for your frankness on yourself and for your making helps so understandable.♥️
I remember these from a book I read years ago! 1) get dressed 2)clean sink
Often after watching one of your videos, I feel inspired. Today, I feel like I could really get my home in control! I love watching you! Also, I loved your literacy history fact of the day!
This IS doable for me. I got some good advise upon my retirement.
After teaching for decades I quit getting dressed, quit getting my hair cut regularly, rarely left the house. No need to, I was retired. On the first day of the next school year a retired friend and mentor called me and said. Grab a shower get dressed put on your shoes then have an awesome day. It was the best advise. We oldies need wisdom from those who know. Wisdom often comes from experience not always with age. Thanks Miss Kellie. Love your channel.
I wish I'd had a mum like you - as a child I found helping in the house an experience of constant correction and a negative experience. I love your philosophical and personal reasoning. So I'm now determined to get my surfaces clear and my sink is going to be sparkling before I ever go to bed! Thank you!
Can't agree more... A happy and productive morning starts with a peaceful night. Cleaning the sink and countertop gives a perfect closure to the day, and getting up in the morning, getting ready and having a peaceful first cup of coffee or tea gives so much of power for the day....!!
Have you heard or read “Make Your Bed” by Navy Admiral William H. McRaven? I show it to all my high school students-incredibly valuable information, similar to what this video teaches. I love it. You are wise beyond your years (and quite articulate).
I love what he told that graduation class - I've kept the CZcams video of it and watch it every once in a while
Doodie Hutchison, I completely agree this video still sticks w me when I make my bed everyday! I’m so happy you show your students, it will stick w some of them👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@pattyspencer7795 My students really do listen and take to heart his teachings. At first they think making your bed is a silly idea, but by the time he has finished his speech, they understand his point. Love it.
after reading your post and the replies to it.. I've just put in an order for this book.. ty :)
@@lushpaw1 go watch the video too - there are various lengths - I think the one I've saved is 20 min
You really had fun with this one! I agree small steps can make a huge difference. I Need to come up with one of these for my paper clutter. Thanks for sharing.
I have been decluttering my parents' home since the beginning of the pandemic. My mom died in 2019, and she was a hoarder an overbuyer. I am nowhere near done, but I given away so many clothes, so much stuff so far that we have been able start a home painting/reno project, and 90% of that is done.
She is right. Little things DO add up. I HATED making my bed, but now I make it every day and it feels so good to have that done.
Absolutely love your explanation of "one fell swoop." I always look up stuff like that but never thought to look that one up. Thank you
You truly have inspired me with your theory of motion. I have made "moving about" a habit of mine even when catching up on TV in the evening. I only wish the same ripple affect would happen with my teens!
Shout out to Kallie for clarifying the origin of the phrase “one fell swoop”! I was in fact saying it correctly but I never knew why - thanks for that little nugget of information!
I'm 65 and still learning. Thank you for helping us. :-)
So - I know that this video was 2 years ago, but I love the format. You are so charming and funny and I love that you inject so much of that in this video.
I love this!!! I've found the same from cleaning my sink every night and getting dressed every day. I haven't been decluttering daily but I do regular tidies and declutter regularly as part of my day to day life. I love how you described the ripple effects it has on our lives!
I feel inspired. Everything can't be fixed at once but this sounds so doable. Thank you.
I agree waking up to a clean kitchen makes my day sooo much better!
Thanks a bunch for this. I've also started the "Doing this now to help future Barb" idea that you've mentioned in past videos. I've starting making sure to unload and reload the dishwasher in an effort to, as often as possible, leave an empty sink, not unlike your advice today. That allows room when I come with grapes to wash or a water jug to refill (we have a side filtered water tap) and room to do it with at least one entirely empty sink bowl. These are all really perfect. I can't just run around in my pajamas if I actually want to get stuff done. My brain just won't "switch over" to work mode. I need to be dressed: jeans and shoes. And clutter. Dang, that's a hard thing! It's so easy to fill closets and just never see stuff again. To do decluttering daily AND developing a mindset of NOT replacing it is a VERY worthy goal. Working on it.🙂
One tip: have donation box or bag on certain spot all the time, so when you hołd something you know you are done with, you Just put in that box and when its full you takę it out of your house. This helps me.
I find that having gratitude for things my past self did to make my future life easier helps me to keep those habits going. I will literally thank myself out loud!
I'm so grateful for all the wisdom you share with so many. Took me too many years to learn things like this. Your followers get a head start on these little things that make such an improvement in our lives.
We’ll done. It’s never too late. I’m 74 years old next month & you’ve inspired me to declutter SOMETHING every day! See, i told you so, it’s never too late!
My husband took over a lot of the cleaning I used to do about 10 years ago and your list has made me realize how different we are and how I can support both of us decluttering a little bit each day.
As my mobility improves I am decluttering and your channel is helping with decisions and motivation to get rid of all the extra stuff. I never know what to do with stuff I think might be valuable and\or vintage items? I've been boxing them and labelling them to sell like your Swedish Death Decluttering video.
Love this. Makes adulting feel simple and doable.
I’m totally with you on the little things having a big impact on our lives over time. I have been building on my habits and routines for the past few years and it’s been life changing.
I love watching your videos!! I'm a very organized person, but you keep me motivated to take it up a notch. Thank you for being so awesome 💜
Growing up in the ‘50’s & ‘60’s, we were taught to tidy the living room before bed. Then you have a nice room to walk into when morning comes. Clean the dishes/put them away each meal. Make your bed every day as soon as you get out of it. Still works for me.
Thanks for the motivation!. I started doing Flylady a few years back and the change was enormous in our home. When we moved from Texas to Alabama, I felt overwhelmed with all of the boxes and unpacking waiting for me. I've let my daily habits deteriorate to the point that I have my grandson over this weekend to help me find my very special Cross pen that I love journaling with and my password (!) notebook that contained all my doctor info, financial info, and important to remember dates. Remembering how I felt back then has just been jumpstarted by you with this wonderful video.
You are such an inspiration to me! Thank you for your humbleness and your teachings! John 3:16❤️
Yes, decluttering changed my life.
Wish I had learned this years ago, but hope springs eternal and I do love your approach to imparting all this knowledge. Here's to 3 little changes leading to a changed life! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing these no-nonsense tips that make perfect sense when you do them all together!! You just inspire me to do things that literally do not take a lot of time😄
Great ideas that are easy to implement. So easy to get overwhelmed when trying to do it all at once.
I used to follow FlyLady years ago! Clean sink to wake up to was the first thing I learned from her! ❤️
Yes! I have been focusing on these habits recently and I agree they are life changing!! I am a returning student with a almost three year old and I feel like I have things more together than ever despite balancing school now too!! Love your stuff!!
You are *such* an attractive personality! Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Really well put together talk. I saw/heard echos of Fly Lady with your sink cleaning tip. 😃. Lovely to hear how the ripple effect works in your life.
Yes you are!! No offence but a lot of Americans grate on me ,speechwise but not you.I engoy your voice! X
Also the dress to shoes and declutter every day are flylady things.
Thanks for the inspiration! ❣️
I made a decision years ago that I wouldn't go to bed and leave dirty dishes in the sink. It's a little thing but it was important that I do this every night before going to bed. And after a while, it just becomes routine.
But it doesn't mean the world will come to an end if one exhausting night you're just too tired to wash the dishes before bed. There's a difference between routine and a punishable offense, so you don't have to beat yourself up if you miss one night occasionally.
I don't have a problem getting dressed every day but I'm still working on other things I need to change. I'm trying to get things more organized but I think I'm looking at it in a way that overwhelms me. It's going to involve moving furniture but first I need to clear some areas and I keep thinking about all the things that will connect the dots and it's a long process.
But I've seen enough of your videos to be able to approach this sensibly. The best option for me is baby steps. I'll start working on areas that need attention and I'll stop adding to the problem.
I've obtained items that will help with the organization and I will start using them.
I have one area cleared and now can use that area for sorting and redirecting.
And understandably, I need to work out of the bad habits and work into good habits to be routine, where I don't even have to think about it but just automatically do it the right way to save time and aggravation in the long run.
I really appreciate your videos because you always offer helpful words of wisdom. You are very young to have figured out so many impressive things.
Thanks for sharing another inspired video! 🥰
Hey girl. Love your videos. Did start with sink challenge. You are correct. It has rippled, and am now keeping a cleaner more organized home. Keep the videos coming, great motivator😄🕺💃 happy dance
Thank you so much Kallie 😍
I love this!!! I can relate to each one! And I know it works. I am proof! I went through a bad period of depression and am slowly making my way back to the living. Developing these 3 habits...plus a couple more...are helping immensely. I really appreciate your videos so much!
Currently reading Atomic Habits, so your video fits right in. Well, said.
Also, LOVED the coffee cup!!
Habits. I love it. I agree, starting with dishes, then the whole kitchen and living room is tidy. And it definitely creates a huge ripple effect with me. Soon I start to literally declutter a cupboard, donating 75% of everything in the kitchen, linen closet, my closet, etc. And it just feels right. My Mom always says it's best to just start and not put off for later. Just start.
LOVE LOVE LOVE everything you said. !!!!Thank you!
Love this! It's the little 5 min easy steps that open the way for deeper, stronger versions of those habits! I so agree! Thanks for the encouragement and reflection!
