Also the least bells and whistles the better. The new ones with all the gadgets have too many things to break down. Really do your research on the brands, they are not all equal and some aren't worth the money at all.. Do you have a friend in the appliance repair dept? That would be great.

Same advise re your stove...BASIC & self Cleaning. I know you said you don't want more small appliances but they can be put In a cupboard. An airfryer within your stove would be quite costly to fix & might shutdown your oven while you wait for it airfyer to be fixed! Personally, I would study brands & go for the best simple 1 that I could afford.

Appliance advise. Propane stove and refrigerator. As long as you have a good supply they will still work when electricity is out during storms.

Abby it is absolutely no one's business what you're spending or how you're able to spend on your house. People are entirely too nosey and need to learn to respect some boundaries, honestly. Also, Jay is incredible and I would not have guessed he was in his seventies, he runs circles around me! You are so fortunate to have him. Alcoa is an international company; they have a division named Kawneer, which is in Bloomsburg, PA and they make industrial aluminum doors and windows. Next time you're at a drive thru window or walking into a store look for a small oval at the bottom with the name Kawneer in it and you'll be amazed to see that nearly all that you come across are from that company! Alcoa, also makes other various building products like rain gutters and spouts, siding etc and supply aluminum to car manufacturers around the world as well. They are a very large company.

    • @margaretbedwell3211

We bought our siding from Alcoa in Spring of 1970, guaranteed against fading, peeling etc. for 40 years. It looks as good today as the day they installed it.

As far as a refrigerator goes, I have French doors on the top and a freezer drawer on the bottom. I really like it because I basically know what I keep on each side of the fridge and only open the side I need. I think it’s a bit rude that people want to know details about your personal finances.

My parents and sis had french door refrigerators and they don't like it at all. They are bigger, and need clearance on either side, not a wall. And expensive to repair. The ice makers were a huge headache. So they settle with a regular refrigerator after getting rid of the french door ones. Glad Jay came in and help you out a lot! He is far more active than many men and he's happy to keep busy! Such a good teacher!

I like semi light gray walls with white trim, it has a rich look to it & everything goes with it (furniture appliances ect) but the wood doors will stand out better with the semi light gray paint...But, that's just me if I where to do things all over again. Wood Blinds look nice on those deep windows (box Windows)
Roman blinds look great with linen or light-colored cotton prints.
The trim should be a warm white, like Home Depot Elegant White.
If you make your own floor lumber, make sure to put a slight bevel on the upper wood edge, so that any dirt and sand falls into the beveled spots, to help preserve the wood finish longer, (less materials grind on wood surface, so the finish stays nicer, longer) You could get a mini split air conditioner for use just on the top floor.

I had both side by side and and top bottom freezer fridges. I would suggest the split fridge with a bottom freezer. With a side by side freezer the freezer in skinny. So if you cook ahead casseroles, cakes, etc it with limit the size of your dishes that can will fit. Make sure to measure the size of the shelving in the freezer before your decide of cooking dishes and you fridge.

Try to get the finger printless appliances. I have had the regular stainless, did not like it. I just got the printless and absolutely love them. And yes, there is a stove that has an air fryer, that is one of the appliances that I got. Put just the wood on the inside of the window frame and frame it around the outside in white wood.

When it comes to matching the trim around your doors. You can go back to the man who made your door and ask him for staying that would match. I’m sure he would help you out and I think that would look really great. But it’s your house.

I think you did a great job answering all those questions, and the one thing many younger people can take away from people older then them as you mentioned is patience. we all in out youth are in a hurry to get things done. and most times wind up doing them over because we rushed them and did them wrong. learning to slow down and take your time and do it right the first time is and has always been the road to success. Keep on learning that from Jay and all your elders Abby you are a quick learner. I'm sure you will take it all into account. thanks for sharing ECF

You are truly blessed to have such wonderful family and friends and skilled people around you that love to do what they do and share their knowledge. It’s been great to watch you theses past couple years. Jay reminds me of my dad. He is in his 80’s now and still does so much around the house and thinks he can get on the roof too. But we must draw the line on that one. Three years ago, he was still climbing on 12 ft ladders to tinker up there so I can totally see Jay doing this for fun for many years to come!
I think your budget is your own business. Having connections in building is awesome and of course brings cost down. I watch ADU builders from different areas and they give their budgets and cost just to let people know if they want to recreate what they’ve done, that it’s possible on a slim budget. And most DIYs will definitely save you money if time is not an issue. But if time is an issue and people have a looming mortgage payment and can’t afford two homes then yes, you might want to hire out and not DIY because the time is literally costing them money. 😂 I have been there and done that.
What I’m curious to know and if you wouldn’t mind is posting, the Amish woodworkers business info and maybe a ballpark given by them of what a wood door package similar to yours would cost. I know the Amish don’t do websites and stuff like that but I think that what would be something cool to know and maybe people in northern NY or in its proximity could actually visit these Amish businesses and get their own masterpieces. 😊 Of course if it’s ok with the businesses. Thank you for these Q&A videos.

We got our fridge in 2020 because our old one went over the rainbow bridge. Options were limited at the time and we opted for the double door fridge with the freezer on the bottom. I love this my home is not as old as yours my home was built in 1952 here. I have learned so much and I am so proud of you. You're a resourceful young lady; everything in your home will mean so much more to you because it's full of your hard work and love for your space and home.

I would recommend doing white trim a windows and doors. I have wood trim on my windows and doors. I had made that choice when I had my house built about 20 years ago. Over time that wood has gotten really dark and now I want to get it painted white. I would asl suggest a light off-white color, maybe Benjamin Moore Navaho white or Linen White for walls. All your choices sound nice.

When you were sheet rocking, I didn't see that you put a light switch near the front door? Any plans fot that? Also, if you choose white for paint..choose a warm white..cool whites aren't as inviting. In my opinion.. I love your house! Great job, Abby.

You should get some color stipes at a paint shop or store . So, you can look at them nexted to your doors to see which color stain looks best for the window trims .

Abby, when you are ready to purchase your appliances go and look at them in person so you can really get a good idea of what you need and like. We had a white french door fridge. It was the same size as a regular fridge, not those big wide frenchdoor types. We have a family of five so the freezer was not adequate for our family. We lucked out and was given an old stand-up deep freezer so it worked out. If you are the only one living there it should be adequate for you if you choose that style. If you are going to be putting up food such as canning and freezing keep that in mind. Do you want an icemaker? How much ice do you like? Keep that in mind also. You just have to match your needs with what you choose. Personally, I want fridge top, freezer bottom setup for my next refrigerator/freezer purchase. We currently have a refrigerator with freezer on top with icemaker and it has very little freezer storage space. Have fun looking. You will find what you want.

I figured Jay may have been a Millwright. Working at a lot of situations is what they do. Lucky that you have him. Have watched all your videos and most all of Working Horses With Jim.

Hi! Abby. Good video. If your style is more simplistic Swedish modern😀 Consider white trim everywhere, doors can be white or light wood to match your floor. The exterior doors won’t look out of place and adding wooden Roman blinds can give you the wood feel you want and help blend different wood tones. Depending on your budget you can use your existing floors on both levels. There are ways to weave in boards to disguise the straight lines in the floors but who says the floor has to be a certain way. Think “character” and area rugs. If you do raise the kitchen dining area floor, how will that affect cabinet and door heights? If you do raise it use some form of underlayment to bring it up to level. Do everything you can to have a level flooring surface, you won’t regret it.

Side by side Refrigerators are not as energy efficient. They usually have ice and water dispensers that work great. look for a frig that has the venting at top/front, more efficient and easier to keep clean, they don't get as dusty as bottom venting. Easier to reach venting area at front/top, always allow 1" space left and right. At least 3" space in back for water supply and back vented. If it's front vented and there is no water and ice dispenser you can have only 1" space in back for plug space. Bottom freezers look real nice with cabinet matching panels. Doesn't even look like a frig. Stainless steel looks real nice with white and gray. Real stainless Steel is hard to keep fingerprints off of it.

If you get Venetian blinds, get the wide vanes. Real wood will last. Any kind of plastic gets brittle in the sun. Metal will cut up your hands. Easier to clean are the plantation shutters.

Hi abbi , just a thought on your upstairs floors, have you considered carpet for the bedrooms and hallway? It’s nice to have a warm comfy floor when one nips to the toilet in the middle of the night.. and also early morning clumping around to the shower/ wardrobes etc would be way less noisy 🤷‍♂️

Benjamin Moore Simply White is a good one. Also, Sherwin Williams sells their untinted base and it has a really clean look.

Loved the Q & A on these 2 videos. I especially enjoyed how Jay has come out of his shell and talks much more now. I had to laugh when he said he is married. Hmmm, wonder if his wife reminded him of that, maybe he was getting ladies asking in the comments below? LOL! I figured Jay was in his 70's and retired. Awesome help and team member for Abby! I often thought I wish I had learned so much of the things you have learned over the last couple of years when I owned my own home. I could've done so many things with it, but now I rent. Just love these videos Abby and look forward to them every week.
