Piano Marvel’s rhythm critique was what sold me. Other apps mostly just measured if the correct key was hit. Including rhythm forced me to play the current lesson over and over again until I had both the right key and rhythm correct. I really appreciate that. I tried several apps with their free trials and settled on Piano Marvel.

Now the only thing left is to include note length! I kinda would've expected an actually-competent program like Piano Marvel to include it, but I suppose not.

Thanks for the great review! I've been using the trial of Piano Marvel for 3 days now and am really enjoying it. I like that the interface is uncluttered and not more like a 'game'. I like that the music looks like regular sheet music and there are no distractions. I run Piano Marvel on my Windows 7 computer and had no issues getting the midi interface working. I think I am making good progress with the app and love how it keeps me moving along in the lessons and providing me with help and feedback along the way. I will take advantage of your signup discount as I love the app!

I think that was a very fair review Christine. The only major thing that you left out is the ability to add your own music in Piano Marvel. None of it's competitors can do this and I love that feature. There is so much value hidden in the Piano Marvel library, if they got themseleves a UI designer to tidy up the interface generally and bring out the value there I think that Piano Marvel would have a real lead over the other apps.

    • @jake_ams
      @jake_ams Před 6 měsíci

Think exactly the same. With a modern design and some advisors in marketing and functions who add more value options to the app they could have been the lead in the app Stores.
No app allows to import own sheet music that you practice with real time feedback, flowkey is the only app that has also practice mode, but the music is cut down and most of the time arrangements, obviously made for startes only. And no import. Even songs that are marked as professional are cut down there because „people shouldn’t play too long songs“. That’s what the support says.
If Piano Marvel re-Designs, they could be a great app for expert people who want to get more professional, because they don’t need a teacher necessarily
      anymore.
This gap in the App Store could have been filled with piano marvel, but there wasn’t much movement the last years sadly.

I have used Piano Marvel (PM), Simply Piano (SP) and Flow Key (FK) extensively. Christine's lovely review is great and I fully agree. However just to add a few points:
Simply Piano is better at getting you going, much more hand holding which is useful if you haven't made your mind up as to how serious of an effort you to put into playing piano, thus better orientated for beginners I think . FK is dated but it has an unique advantage over PM in that the songs include CHANGING dynamics and tempo which PM doesn't . Bach Prelude in C BWV 946 is a good example, PM version is very mechanical sounding whereas it FK adds that extra element of artistic flair which makes a world of difference in a piece like this.
PM ability to add your own music file from MuseScore is excellent
The song selection although appears quite large in PM, I get the feeling the went for quantity over quality . I was surprised not to find any pieces by Ludovico Einaudi (wonderful and modern) or hans zimmer, or even instantly recognizable theme music such as Halloween, The Exorcist, Jaws , Twin peaks, However FK is missing some classics too. This will be very much personal choice naturally!
Overall I think SP is better for getting up and running fast. Its a lot easy to spend 1 - 2 hours in front of a piano with SP that PM I found. You can plug in the gaps (which there will be many with SP!) and expand out your skills with PM or FK after you finish ,
Like any app you need to be checking you tube videos for extra tips on how to play the piece they was its intended not just mechanically follow a music sheet
Final point for our folks in countries with internet restriction like I am (China). PM is very difficult to get work as it uses Google plug-ins and youtube, so you will need a VPN

Hi Christine! I think you’re absolutely right to say Piano Marvel is more like having a piano teacher.
I used Simply Piano for 9 months... I enjoyed using it initially but after a while it began to feel like a game... maybe great for kids but not if you want to learn to play piano properly.
I did a lot of research looking at all the other apps available... I wanted something more like the traditional learning process and narrowed it down to Piano Marvel.
I subscribed several months ago (using your link from an earlier video 🙂) and have to say that I’m absolutely delighted with it. It has made me excited about learning to play piano and I now play everyday.
Thank you so much for your videos!

I've been using Simply Piano for 6months now and is at the pre-Advanced Stage. I would say Simply Piano kept me motivated to learn as it was fun playing along popular songs I loved. I doubt I would have gone that far if I started with PianoMarvel. That said, I am now on Playground Sessions (Pop Songs! :) ) and I must say this is the next stage after Simply Piano as it focused more on chunking the music and very strict on the Tempo/Rythm.
I've tried PianoMarvel the past week and I've found they are more structured and comprehensive than Playground Sessions but totally lacking in the pop songs in practise. That's the motivation for me. Being able to learn on the go popular songs.
In summary, I would start with Simply Piano for learning sight reading (I can read sheet music and play the notes without problem now) and moved on the PlaygroundSession or PianoMarvel to refine the techniques and tempo. SimplyPiano is actually not very good on the technique and tempo, but very good to start learning piano for sight reading and fingering. Without memorizing anything on the scales, my hands just fall naturally on the keys when i read the notes and slideover and crossover easily.

Thank you for the review. I haven't tried any of the apps yet, but one thing I noticed about PM is that the sheet music is only scrolling vertically, one row at a time, instead of horizontally and continuously like most of the other apps. With that and with the increased focus on technique and music notation (as opposed to games and "falling rays of light" kind of thing) I think I'll go with this one. Also I have a touchscreen reversible laptop, not an iPad, so PM is better for me for that reason. Let's go!

What I found with Piano Marvel was that I was able to hear chords better than when I learned as a music major. I wish I had trained for musicianship and beginner piano through such an app. On the other side of the coin, I have found that some of the accompaniments are not with the solo part being played. In addition, some of the count-offs are not accurate causing the accompaniment not to be correct. I saw that there were quite a number of universities using this app for their beginner piano. I am surprised that they have not come across some of the issues I have. Or maybe they have and the advantages outweigh the mistakes in the recording. I am not a piano person, but I found that there was a section in there that played much faster than my old fingers could go. I dropped out for a while because of that. I plan to go back to it because I have always wanted to play the piano. I am not sure I can get to a level that I am on my other instrument. That would be wonderful, but maybe it could be impossible.

Well that all depends on the kind of music you listen to daily. Personally I think the modern music they try to force down our throats on radio and TV is garbage.

If you learn to play while reading music, then you can play anything that you can get sheet music for. Plus they are training the ear, once you learn you may find that you can play just about anything by ear.

Piano Marvel is the lamest, most boring application I have ever used. It is even worse then Playground Sessions, which is saying a lot... or a little, as the case may be.

What's your preference for an app and what makes it better than PM?

@@muscleheadzzzz I've only tried Playground Session, Piano Marvel and Yousician. Yousician is the only subscription I kept. I have yet to find a good online training application. I'd recommend picking up piano method books off Amazon (Faber or Thompson's). Yousician is the funnest and the cool part is that I've already played piano, bass and ukulele through Yousician -- they also support guitar and vocals. Hope this helps and all the best.
