If your motor was consuming coolant by leaking into the inlets, that would mean that you were getting a water injection effect which would mean improved performance, interesting.
Yeh maybe but it did go better when I replaced it so I suspect a vacuum leak

Watched this video before I started the job today. Did you use a cleaner or elbow grease to clean the gasket surfaces?
I just used a green scuff pad dry to clean it up.

I used one of those green dishwasher scrubbing pads and brake cleaner

Yes just rags, if it is lose stuff you can use a vacuum
