Troubleshooter Consumer Alert: Ford Focus transmission issue

- čas přidán 8. 07. 2015
- CINCINNATI (Howard Ain) -- Complaints about the operation of two of the Ford Motor Company's top selling models prompted the company to make changes. The problem goes back three years and involves the transmissions. It concerns the 2012, 13 and 14 Ford Focus and the Ford Fiesta. It all has to do with their power shift transmission. A Newport woman told Local 12 News she and two family members all bought the 2014 Ford Focus. She said they've all had problems with the transmission. Another local owner, Cheryl Pemberton of Florence, had her transmission and clutch replaced in 2014 but she said her problems continued. Pemberton said, I have not met one person yet who has a 12, 13 or a 14 that is not having the exact same issue." As she described it to her dealer, the problem was the car would sputter and jerk and make grinding noises. When it jerked very hard she said it could be scary; too much for her young daughter. Penberton said, Initially I was going to give this to her when she turns 15. I wouldn't give this to her. I would not give this to my daughter, no way." In December 2014, Ford replaced Penbertons transmission and clutch but now, she said, the clutch has to be replaced again. I'm not anti-Ford at all. We've always had Ford cars forever; my whole family. But this clutch, this transmission that they have now clearly doesn't work." Local 12 News went to ASE certified master technician, Matt Overbeck, This particular transmission is basically a completely manual transmission that is being controlled electronically by a computer." Overbeck said the system used by Ford was similar to that used by Volkswagon several years ago. Only Ford's is slightly different all in an attempt to get better gas mileage. Overbeck said, It takes a little bit getting used to, to the person whose driving it. Ford claimed up to 10 percent increase in fuel economy and that was a significant amount of improvement. Permberton said, When they did the diagnosis on it they said there's a certain number that they, once they get to a certain number, that its not safe to drive. My car is not at that number so its still safe to drive." Local 12 News tried contacting the spokesperson for Ford Motor Company both by phone and online but did not hear back. Tod Shack-Lighter, service manager for a local Ford dealership, told Local 12 drivers needed to be educated to the fact they were really driving a vehicle with a manual transmission. So some noises or hesitation would be expected. In the meantime, he said, Ford was constantly updating the software on its transmission control module to try to fix the concerns. The company also just re-designed the clutch disk itself and hopes all the changes will put an end to the repeated repairs needed by Pemberton and others. Ford has extended the warranty to 7-years or 100,000 miles on the vehicles. At this point (7/9/15) there was no recall and Ford has been repairing the transmissions as problems come up. If people drive one of these vehicles and they're having these issues, contact your dealer. Follow us on Twitter @Local12 and LIKE us on Facebook for updates!
Nothing better than driving friends and having them ask "tf is wrong with your car" everytime you get going after a stop sign
Andrew VanOs Imagine being an Uber/Lyft driver and having to randomly explain on every trip "sorry, my transmission's fucked". Lol... FML
Even tho I have the same issue with my car. Everyone that has gotten in it loves. Guess my car ain't that bad off yet lol.
Look up, "field service action number" 14m01 and 14m02. These may apply to you as long as your vehicle is in the specified range. I believe the warranty i s extended to 100,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. A commenter on this video, Ccmaster86, gave a good description of what is likely happening. I'm trying to get this issue resolved as well on my 2013 Ford Focus I just purchased (should've done my research first). Though I actually really like the car as well but for this problem.
Mine conveniently doesn't have the recall for the clutch how convenient.
Andrew VanOs I know right!
I love how the final option is to contact your dealer. They have their excuses memorized.
Bro i just took my car to ford its like they have a script memorized its depressing dealing with this idk how to get them to buy it back
1200 to 1800 i have to pay to get mine fixed.
MrLabtop1 me too🤦🏾♂️
Literally just got off the phone with ford and they say I need a new clutch. Fuck these assholes
@@Nattyuce685 me too. It wont move now
Nothing but nightmares with my 2012 Focus. Transmission reflashed too many times to count, clutch replaced twice, 3 wheel bearings shot, My Ford Touch computer screen going black and freezing multiple times. I was going to wait for my warranty to expire before selling this rolling turd, but I don't even know if I can wait that long to be honest.
How has it been since then?
My stepson has a 2014 Ford focus that he bought used. A few months later the clutch started to slip. Ford fixed it and told us that because of the issues with this car, they were extending the warranty on the transmission to 100,000 miles. 15 months later it started to slip even worse. Dealer said the rear engine seal had leaked oil on the clutch and damaged it; cost to repair over $2500. I mentioned the extended warranty. They said Ford had decided that the warranty would apply only once and Ford would not cover the vehicle. Call to customer service at Ford resulted in the same statement. Ford knows this is their problem, but they refuse to be held accountable. I've been a Ford customer most of my life; I'm on my 4th F Series pickup and bought my wife a Lincoln. Ford's response to this situation will destroy their brand; I for one have bought my last Ford!
The only way these guys will learn - vote with your feet ;-)
I'd previously bought a car from my local Hyundai dealer, and when I wanted to upgrade, their head-salesman laughed at me and walked away when I asked him to throw in a set of winter tyres (not uncommon around this area) - So I went to the Honda dealer up the street and bought a car from them. That Hyundai dealership were then sending me periodic flyers to trade in my original vehicle I'd bought from them, so I emailed them and told them I'd never buy another car off them again , and why.
Something similar happened at the Toyota dealership; The head salesman phoned me with a price, after I'd requested he email me a price with a breakdown. When I told him over the phone to email me details (I wanted a copy so he couldn't later slip in extras) - He scoffed and said "I don't have time for THAT!" - So I replied "Well then you don't have time to sell me a car" and hung up. Such slimeballs
They didn’t fix it, I️ have a 2016 Ford Focus and it’s still like this. Took it to ford twice and they said there was nothing wrong with it.I️ am livid with Ford, never again.
I had a 2012 Ford Focus and I had similar problems with my transmission. I was afraid that my transmission was breaking and sent my car to the dealer constantly. Until one day the person who sold me the car explained to me what kind of transmission I had. So I made some changes to my driving and updated the software of my car, which improved it a lot. However still have the same problems like the video said just fewer times. I decided to drive my car as if I had a manual transmission. That means waiting for the needle in the RPM to go down when it reaches the highest RPM in that gear. Then I pushed the gas pedal slightly down repeating the same action till I reached the speed I wanted. This not only gave me a smoother ride but also used less gasoline as well. I hope that helps people who have this car. Please feel free to ask anything else about my experience with my car.
That's great advice but there is still a problem.
There are plenty of manufacturer's with cars and trucks with dual clutch transmissions that do not have these problems.
I don't know specifics or comparisons but I have a 2013 Focus and have experienced many of these problems. In certain situations it can cause an accident.
241k miles on my car though and a most of it is highway so I don't experience the problem as often as others.
Hi I’m also going thru a same issue should ford fix up this issue on there own cost as this card got issues before buying from them
Same thing I have to do with mine lol it’s my first car too so figuring it out alone was hella hard.
My 2012 is doing this. This is the 1st time ive bought a car all by myself. It was used when I bought it the salesman acted like was getting such a good deal considering it had low mileage and its 6 yrs old. Well NO WONDER!!! NOW IM STUCK WITH A CRAP CAR. THANKS FORD
Monica Bradley sorry hear. was almost in the same situation today but thanks to my sister sharp hear i didnt end up buying it. How is ur car going??
I’m in the same boat as you. I only had it for a week and it’s been messing up. I’m about to sell it again before it’s too late, but what’s the update on it?
Send in a complaint, that’s what I did. This is a lemon and needs to be sent up
I'm having this SAME PROBLEM. 2014 Ford Focus SE with less than 12,000 miles on it. "It's a great deal! It's got low mileage!" I sat through the spiel thinking "I don't want this car".What messed me up is that I made the mistake of buying the car by myself and then asking my dad about it when I went home. Now I'm stuck with this car for the next 5 years or until the transmission inevitably fails completely and I get rear ended by a semi on the interstate. It's my own fault for not buying another Toyota.
I have a 2012 focus owned it since it was new and its always had the jerk and noise but I came from a manual shift car so it's about the same feel as clutch hesitation it has 120k miles now still drives the same and still gets about 38 mpg once you get used to making complete stops with it and pad the gas you can manage the launch hesitation overall it's been a good car no other issue except the driver window motor going out nothing has been done mechanically on the car except brake pads...they have done the software updates on the TCM as necessary
Ford: These noise/hesitation issues are completely normal.
Also Ford: We're trying to fix these issues.
I have a '14 Fiesta with the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) and have had the Clutch replaced as well, no problems so far. Here's the main problem with the transmission that's causing the "shuttering" and "shaking" which no one seems to want to explain. There's a seal on the shaft that seals the Clutch mechanism from the manual trans fluid inside the case, that seal keeps failing. Fluid gets inside the Clutch housing and on the Clutch surfaces, which causes slippage when engaging. That slippage is what you feel and hear. This is why it's fine first thing when you start the car, but it progressively gets worse as you drive it. Ford and Getrag keep redesigning the seal in an attempt to stop the leaking hence the numerous redesigns. Seal replacement also demands Clutch replacement since it's now been contaminated with manual trans fluid. Other issues such as "grinding" or loud noises are simply due to the mechanical nature of the DCT, and it's proximity to the driver. You're just hearing everything it's doing in there because the Focus and Fiesta have very little sound deadening. The DCT has a learning curve in the software as well. Meaning if you granny drive it for %95 of the time, when you thrash it the transmission will shift erratically due to the unexpected driving dynamic. This transmission also hates sudden stops from acceleration because it has no torque converter to dampen any sudden movements. If you hit the gas then brake suddenly, the engine may race because the transmission expected 2nd or 3rd gear and suddenly had to go a neutral state. I love the DCT in my Fiesta and it really is the superior technology compared to CVT's, basic hydraulic autos, or standard manuals. You just have to learn the quirks if you've never driven one, and Ford has to get that darn seal right!
If this is really the problem, then Ford should put this out there in a report to owners. Not feed them some bs about being normal.
If Companies were more up front and honest about issues they have with products, I believe customers would be more patient and understanding.
As for the ones that say never another ford, what are you going to buy? All of the brands have problems. I've driving fords for over 35 years and none of them has ever had to have any major repairs.
T Donat I will next buy a Toyota, Honda or Subaru. Or just anything that's not Ford. Never another Ford!!
I'm regretting getting a 2016... it's acting up too.
ccmaster86 any updates, a seal fix? Or ongoing clutch problems, had pcm fixed few months ago for shifting issues, now clutch repair for similar symptoms, what gives?
djsepsis The car is simply an un-fixable piece of shit. I've had constant problems with my 2016 Focus. It's always slipping out of gear into neutral while driving, or getting stuck in gears. The other night it got suck in 1st, and I was redlining the engine at over 7k RPM but only moving 30 MPH.
its my big mistakes to buy this car. the worst car ive ever had.
I'm having the same issues and I'm trading my car in for a Escape. They are giving great trade in values for these cars
+Amanda Brown I'd be sure to "test drive it" for a couple days to make absolutely sure it doesn't have any issues. I've done that with vehicles in the past.
+Amanda Brown
Get the base model Escape with the 2.5 liter.
Bulletproof drive train.
My too
What an expert 1:45 "It takes a little bit to get used too" is one of there stupid excuses. We drive a 2013 Ford Focus with exactly this transmission problems and there is no "takes time to get used to" the car drives horribly for a car made in the year 2013. Its a engineering failure there is nothing to excuse this nonsense. The noise and the stuttering are just not to excuse like that. Here you have a clear example that the customer aint worth shit in there eyes. Nothing what they do change the fact and we where several times at the dealership.
The latest joke is that we received a letter that says it could happen that the car just loose engine power several people had problems with that and they know want us to come to the dealership so that they can install a software update that would warn us in case the engine fails.
I dont want to be informed i want this car to function properly. Unbelievable that whole gig. Never again a Ford.
I've read numerous comments by ford techs saying " there is no fix". Good luck - been there & done that. All my best to your family. Be safe!
+Jelly Bean I should add when the focus I had stalled out on a busy hwy I had no warnings & it had been updated.
Nonsense..sorry
+Jorhan Cruz is this a aprils fools joke or that do you want?? So you come here and tell me that thousents of focus driver cant drive only you? seriously? Sit down boy
I have a 2016... same fucking shit.
I had a 2016 Ford Focus, it was a nightmare for 3 yrs. Had clutch replaced twice. The only thing that has come out of covid for us was Ford was going to replace trans, but due to taking 6 mos to get trans Ford agreed to repurchase. Of course they didn't want to pay rental cost of minimum $6000. I sympathize with all Ford Focus owners, because their paying for an unreliable and very dangerous vehicle.
My friend bought the 2014 Focus brand new and i drove it and was wondering why the hell it jerks when I stepped on the gas after a red light or stop sign. He still has it and he already had to replace the transmission
My wife and I have a 2015 focus Titanium it too has the same issues, called the dealer and they said "there is an update for the shift module" why don't they notify people of this. Took the car in and got the update done however it still has this shimmy/shuddering crap, not as bad but still does it. My Aunt has the same car went through the same thing with only 2,200 miles on the car. the dealership replaced the clutch pack now her car works 100% better. and why are the dealerships not offering loaner cars for this issue, this is a ford issue not a consumer issue. why should i have to pay for a loaner when I'm already paying for a car that doesn't work. I think people should ban together and start a class action law suit, ford knows about the problem but they are not willing to fix the issue very easily.
Do you still have the vehicle? If so has the issue been fixed?
THANK YOU for this video. I have this same exact problem & not understanding why my transmission on my 14 Focus is acting up.
I am having the same problem and will be going to Ford in the morning. I just hope they can fix this issue at a low to no cost!
Is it possible to sue ford for selling us a crazy car that doesn't work?
Yes especially if the problem was known about before now! My son just took his driving test and since he was on campus we didnt reall drive anywhere we walked so now hes 18 my mother in law sold him a 2007 ford focus for 1.00. It has 17,234 orignal miles. Its a great deal she just turned 87, so she never drove any where but to the doctor or grocery store. And it was serviced like it should be. I advised my son to take it since it is 12 years old and have a safety check. I was with him and his transmission doesnt make a noise unless you take it out of over drive then it whines. But I was shocked when he had to take a hill like it was a manual and no automatic. This car rolls back so fast you have to keep one foot on the break and push down on the gas to get out of our drive way. It is a little bit of a steep hill where it meets the main road. But I have driven both manual and automatic and on hills this car acts like a manual. Last night I was with him and he was backing out and I was shocked to see that when I looked up transmission issues with ford focus it goes back to a 2007 and to see that they have not corrected the problem means I will not being buying him a ford! I called around this morning only to be told that I was sent a recall last year for a chip in the transmission, so it only took them 10 years to send a recall notice to an address we haven't lived at for almost 4 years and we get our focus serviced at the ford dealership and gave them our current address so we get the sales adds via email and in the mail, we got a Christmas card but no recall notices ever!
My 2011 Ford focus shook VIOLENTLY when I first purchased it. I took it back to Ford for repair and has been OK ever since. 3 years.
mine is a 2014 ford focus preowned certified. .so my warranty is good. .but I never expected to buy a new car that I hate.. The tackedometer jumps close to 4 it revs like a 5speed not getting put in gear. then it mellows down and is good.. touch the gas pedal and its jerky..how embarrassing. .nomore for me.. everything else is good..I've read the recalls for it and there are 6..they knew about this since 2012 or earlier..so why wasn't mine fixed before selling to me as being certified..don't they do like a point inspection of vehicle. to certify approve it?...I should've researched the car just like dad told me growing up but did I listen? .. nope..live and learn.
is this problem only for automatic transmission on the fiesta and the focus? would that mean that the manual transmission doesn't suffer these problems?
My 2014 does this and the transmission just flat out gave out on the interstate and wouldn’t get up to gear. For a brand new driver having this happen on an interstate alone at 10:30PM was terrifying.
Been dealing with same issues since Feb/Mar of last year (2014). I got my 2013 Focus AFTER getting rid of another 2010 focus which was a lemon as well. This has been an absolute nightmare. It's bad enough that the issue is there. It's worse when the dealership or Ford can't fix it. They should really be held accountable for this major safety issue.
If you had a 'lemon' why did you return to the market and buy another 'lemon'?
I took my 2012 Titanium while it was still under basic warranty and they told me there was only one guy who specialized in this transmission, same story at each of the four dealerships in my area. The least amount of time on the waiting list was 4 months minimum and it can take up to two months to diagnose with no loaner cars, so I was handed a paper that stated the characteristics were normal. I'm only 19 so my credit doesn't allow me to do much else but keep it for a bit. I only have 38,000 miles on it now and in traffic it is absolutely terrible, jerking, shaking, and grinding at low speeds! Once the new cruze hits the lots though I will definitely try to get my hands on one.
Give me all your money
+Steve I totally agree- if you bought the car from a dealership - raise hell until they DO something to help you. Ford (as I understand) actually pays for the rental not the dealership. Enough ppl have been screwed by this problem. Maybe even try a different dealership? The dealership where I bought mine kept saying "ANY dealership can take care of it- wth? I bought it there so I was very persistent bc like so many others its a $$ prob. They should trade you out of that car. FORD needs to eat every single one of these cars. Period. Good luck to you !
Even though this is a manual controlled by a computer the issues are clearly not just down to it being a manual...my 2013 focus had to have clutch pack changed after only 30k miles by the previous owner, when i bought the car at 65k miles it needed yet another clutch pack! car would judder and just not increase speed at a normal rate, even when this gearbox works properly it will jolt and isn't smooth! gear changes are but i find at low speeds the car drives like someone in a manual who doesn't know what they're doing.
- My car jolts sometimes at low speed
- Needed 2 clutch packs changing when its only done 75k miles
- When you tap the gas there is a delay then it comes all at once
- Car will sometimes judder
- Most garages will say oh no when you tell them its a powershift!
- Even in 2022 most still have issues
They say the gearbox is better on fuel but i have the 2013 powershift with the 1.6 petrol engine and it drinks fuel like no tomorrow, around town you'll be lucky to get 25mpg, on petrol cars its the clutch pack that goes quickly but on diesel the powershift is much more reliable but it requires a service every 3 years or a certain amount of miles and this will cost you around £400...and if the previous owner never did it then chances are you'll face tons of problems.
So sick of car companies using customers as guinea pigs, I have a 2014 Focus with this transmission, no wonder resale values of Fords stink. A 24,000 throw away car?
First mistake was buying a Ford 🤣
It would be interesting to know the percentage of plastic that goes to the entire vehicle when assembled new. They give all the specs of the vehicle, weight, color code, tire specs but not the crap materials they use to assemble it. Any Ford should come in a Happy Meal.
after years of getting used to the shutter - i just got the "transmission fault service now" message
LOL
Same here, little after being over 100k miles and they won't service it
On buying a used Ford Focus or Fiesta, how can you tell if it is this PowerShift dual clutch transmission? I like Focus's and Fiesta's but want the regular auto trans with torque converter which is also used. Do the PowerShift models have an emblem or does it state it somewhere on the vehicle?
this continues on to the 2015 I own the Ford Focus 2015 titanium I've had the same problem between first and second "frum 7mph to 11mph" gear and heard the same reply from my ford dealer that its normal for it to run like that from the general manager of the dealership
i was was very happy got into a heated argument with him in the endi got use to it
I have a 2014 Focus. We've learned to live with the junky transmission. I also have a 2010 Mercury Mariner Hybrid with 153,000. Best car I have ever owned.
As crazy as it seems I've had the same exact problem I watch CZcams video and the guy talked about scrubbing your clutch what you do if you start out you accelerate. reach 60 take it back down to zero and repeat four times you need to literally stomp on that gas pedal all the way to the floor and when I was done my transmission was working perfectly
What video was it
I love the Ford Focus though and I plan on getting one because allmost all the kids in my family have gotten one for their first car my sister got a 2010, my cousin got a 2014 (she hasn’t had transmission issues, and I plan on getting a 2018.
1st and last time that I buy a Ford. My last two cars were Nissan & never had any major problems. This car is making my life hell!
Google Nissan Altima CVT transmission issues. They are worst than Ford.
I can relate. Up until I bought this 14 Focus, all I had were Toyotas. I've had this car for a few days and I can already tell it's going to be an expensive headache.
Nissans an there cvt transmissions those cars are shit boxes
Buy manuals then.
I had the TCM software updateD. stared having problems with the transmission two months later. Thanks Ford! I bet the FORD CEO or any of his family don't have to drive a car like this.
or maybe they give him a new car each 2 years..
Trying to decide on a third transmission on my focus,on the fence at 170k otherwise in solid shape any thoughts
I bought a 2014 certified pre-owned focus with 22k miles I didn't drive it for several days then started using it over the weekend when I noticed the problem of it shuddering. When I called about the problem they said oh that is a known issue with the focus. The clutch would take 12 weeks to get in.
It would have been nice to be told that before I bought the damn thing, but all they cared about was making a sale at that time.
Is there any Focus (with the POWERSH1T) from this period in good working condition ?
Buy the one with manual transmission
Mine did to. Transission went out right off lot. They did replace it but I felt it was a lemon.
I'm having the same problem with my 2013 focus. is the something I can do? I don't want to continue paying for a car that doesn't even work. I feel like I was taken advantage of since it's my first time buying a car. smh
Same here!
Dahryl B x2 :/
In Dallas area, any dealership know how to fix the problem on 2015 Ford Focus transmission ?
Turn off traction control or press that little "downhill" button on the side of the gear selector and it goes away. Works everytime in my 2013 Focus.
Mines is having problems today tbh.... And guess what it is... The transmission and the damn clutch... Going to get it fixed Monday
Tyrexecutor how’d it go?
Figured I'd add our 2014 Focus to the list. 22,000 miles and we are looking at 12 weeks for the repair. 12 weeks because of the back order on parts. 3 dealers in the area have a list of people with this issue.
How is the 2016 with the powershift?
Wow! I wish I have of done better research on my 2012 Ford Focus titanium 8 years ago. Recalls/Recalls/Recalls
this was the reason i traded in my 2016 Fiesta for the 2017 Jetta. the jetta is so so much better, not just with the transmission, but all around.
My 2014 Focus has the 5 speed manual, not a single problem!
I'm having a terrible transmission issue with my 2014 Ford focus. It keeps overheating and the transmission just keeps slipping and does not sound good. It's an automatic transmission but I called for today and asked them if there's any recall on my particular car and they said no period and then I asked him if there was any extension on the warranty on my car and they can't seem to find one. right now it's at the dealership for the third time for the same exact transmission overheating problem but they don't know how to fix it period what am I supposed to do?
My focus had transmission faults pop up and still does I've had reprorams and a clucth replace I still have fault codes
Bought my 2014 ford focus fresh off the lot with 0 miles. 2018 had to replace the whole transmission in it. 2020 still having transmission problems. 😒😡😡😡
My wife's 2016 has the same issue, even after they fixed it it lasted less than a year and the issue is back.
My neighbor had a 2013 focus and she had the exact same problem and I remember when she still had the car how it would kick and studder at a start off the line
I just bought a used 2012 Ford Focus wish I did my research. Just had a transmission malfunction message, I just turned the car off and kinda moved the ground wire and it went away.
I currently have a 2017 focus hatchback and it also hesitates and shudders when you accelerate from a stop. If your super light on the gas its fine, but accelerating "normal" its like the car doesn't know how to shift into that 1 gear properly. Its being traded in next week. Good byyyyeee!!
I bought a 2012 ford focus hatchback in 2014. Had 56k miles on it. I could tell from the moment I got it off the car lot it had transmission noises like the metal plates that turn inside the transmission were very clear to hear and it always had a very slow noisy start when accelerating. Now it's 2019 it has 143k miles on it. Check engine light comes on and I go to dealership. They tell me it's 2 factory recalls. I take it home and the light comes back on. I go back to the dealership. They tell me it's the transmission clutch and transmission actuator. Cost is $2100. How do I handle this bs?
I work at a dealership (not a Ford one), and we have a used 12 focus on our lot.i had to drive it a couple miles between our buildings, with no reverse gear, and constantly stalling and slipping. Needless to say, the DCT was having some serious clutch issues. Has since been rectified by our techs, and I've now fallen in love with it. It's my favorite car to take for running parts or whatever when it's not on loan. I don't go easy on it either, but since the fix, it's been a great car to drive, and I'm really considering trading for one at some point, preferably in manual.
Just happened to my friend. 2012 Focus SEL.
They are awaiting an EV and will never have transmission issues again (EVs don't have them!)
Dealing with this issue on 2013 fiesta 100,00 and it finally died, but told service manager at dealership 3 times before they always conveniently left that out in their notes
I drove a 2011 Mercury Milan 5 years ago. Right now I drive a 2015 Ford Escape. There is a recall for the Escape for door hatches. I went in for it but, they have to order them for the Escape.
Well, you know what FORD stands for...
"Fix It Again Tony"
Thats FIAT
Fix oit ragain dtony

The sound is usually caused by a worn start clutch, so replacing it would easily solve the problem. Replacing the start clutch is a doable task, and it makes more sense if you're an experienced DIYer. However, if you do not have the tools needed such as the various types of disks and bearings (pressure disk, friction disk, pilot bearings, etc.), clutch alignment tool, impact gun, and breaker bar, then you might be better off taking your car to a repair shop as this might be more cost efficient on your part.
Make sure the car is using the correct amount of transmission fluid, 1.9 L, and the correct viscosity XT 11 qdc. This is very important. That is the issue.
My 2012 hatchback titanium had this problem. Basically grounded my gears to ships and back. I was going 20 mph on the shoulder in cali to get to the dealership. And it got worse and worse until I got there and they tried moving it. It was toast. They fixed it a few years later. I’m at 68k miles on the car , and now the fuel vacuum is stuck on open. It’s Christmas in a week. Rip seeing my family.
I just finish towing a 2016 with the same issues, good luck people!
Bought mine brand new, 2014 focus SE. It chatters HARD on the 1 to 2 shift after a long drive. Did it the very first day i bought it. had 2 miles on it, brand new. The extended warranty is BS. Only covers the input shaft seal to 100k. I'm near 90k and gonna take it in after a long business trip. Hope i can get a tech to drive and document the issue so they'll fix it.
Hell, they can't "fix" it but they could replace the clutch pack!
There is an update for the PCM that repairs this.... finally..
BRO WHERE DO I GET THIS
Still having this problem in 2021, I was trying to get on the expressway and it deadass wouldn’t shift so I was going 40 halfway down the ramp 😭
Same I have a 2012, thinking about getting a new car because I'm at 96000 miles but I broke down on insterstate like 2 or 3 weeks ago and now transmission is messed up, wouldnt go past 35mph, and now paying $3000 on that. 😒.
Lol just bought a 2014 Focus only because the price was low. Definitely felt hesitation and slight jerking, but it doesn't sound like the transmissions are failing, just not very smooth.
Got a p0700 and p0702A on my transmission 2012 focus reverse but won’t go forward
I have a 2015 and it’s doing this . Problem is the extended warranty campaign stops st 2014 . WTH do I do.
I bought the car used with 70k and it’s doing this . I have records of the transmission being rebuilt by ford at 35k miles
Ford lost a class action lawsuit over this issue. I suggest you research it because if I remember correctly they agreed to extend the warranty longer..
This is why I ride the bus!!!
Oregon Transit Fan I love this comment
Best comment ever😂😂
Brotha got a DUI so he'll be riding the bus
I was interested in buying a 2015 or 2016 focus but everyone I know with a 2014 has had the transmission fixed twice in 60K miles. Since these problems started in 2012 I think, I would not trust a 2015 or 2016 so I gave up on buying one.
The salesman also lied about it. He said the problems only happened with the 2013 models. I drove a 2014 that was recently repaired and it still slipped at initial take off a couple times so I lost interest in buying one........
PV Peel I have a 2015 it has the same issue
I finally sold my 2012 P.O.S Ford Focus Titanium. I endured that B.S herky jerky transmission for over 10 years. I am never buying another Ford product even again.
Transmission issue with my Ford Explorer put like if you have the same issues
I have a 2017 focus and WOW! Same problems :)
2017 Ford Focus SEL...same problem, and I am sick over it. I saved for many years to get a new car and now this.
I have a 2014 and my car won’t move. They said clutch but now my transmission is messing up. They changed the clutch in 2015!! It’s 2019🙄
My car is having the same problem at first it was not catching acceleration it would start slowing down when going higher speeds then. I got a new transmission put in it now started saying Start system failure.
My 2013 Ford Focus just got recalled. They replaced the tcm and now it feels even worse 😑
I have the same issue with my ford and it feels like shit and when I have friends in my car it makes me feel like I have a peace of shit car
Mike Hannon Same I can't wait when my lease is up this year. I'll never buy a car with a Dual-Clutch Transmission again.
Robert Schneider Q
It is a piece of shit
Its been 4yrs since this was posted....Im sure this vehicle has been recycled by now.
Same thing happens to me , I have a 14
I have the same problem. Had to wait 12 weeks for a new clutch, they fixed it and the new one is just as bad!!
Hi Susan, what year is your car? Would love to hear what issues you're having. I work for Consumer Reports and we're doing a story on this. Can you email me at Luz.Plasencia.consultant@consumer.org or call 914-378-2709. Thank you.
I am sorry that I did not see this sooner!! My car is a 2014. Issue is the car shutters, stammers, jerks forward, doesn't run right, I will call and email you.
After seeeing lots of vids, I noticed that had multiple SW upgrades and learning tweaks for the transmission, so probably they didnt changed anything at all, they probably reprogramed the TCM and relearned the clutch. Of course, since the design is a POS, you cant solve ALL of this issues by SW upgrades. The design is AWFUL and will keep faillling. The upgrades are just to mitigate. The problem cant be fixed. They will quit using this tranny in the future. That would probe the point.
My ford focus has reached 100.000 miles and doesn't have a single problem with powershift transmission issue. Just replaced a TCM due to end of warranty. Last service at 90.000 miles, my workshop did an overhaul for the transmission check. Just a dusty parts and could running for another 100.000 miles. I dont know why 🤔
2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback, 35,000 miles, yes it has the low end quirks, but above 30mph it is fine, and does go like a Bat out of Hell at highway speeds, does exceed factory mpg ratings, so I am impressed.
My Toyota transmission has 345,000 miles and still going change fluid every 30k!
Most Toyota's are boring. If you like boring, homely, crappy handling cars that run for 300k miles, then yes, go buy a Toyota and enjoy your sub par driving experience for 10 years. Driving a Toyota Camry is like driving a Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima. It will get you from point A to point B with very few issues. Nothing exciting, crappy handling, generic looks...
I have a 93 GMC with 417,000 miles on it. Never any major repairs. I change the oil once a year with straight weight 30 motor oil & I've changed transmission oil 4 times total.
Same regiment for my 98 Chevy Suburban it has 345,000.
@@pbaker7160 lol meanwhile they're the most valuable car maker in the world. And boring? I guess excitement to you is horrible engineering.. loser.
Not all Toyota’s are perfect, some models have issues.
Paul Baker
The hell are you even talking about lol
I think they should go all the way back to 05 and replace all transmissions in Ford Focuses for free they knew the problem was there from day one
I bought my 2010 focus New an it’s still going with no issues at all 101.000 miles. This transmission issue affects the 2012 an up 2012 an up focus are just shit boxes best focus made were 2008-2011
@@kamryn7496 unfortunately the 2008+ also has plenty of AT issues.
Try going back to the model "T" ! Ford can't build a transmission !
I have a 2018 and it’s been having this issue as well
I literally just bought a 2013 Ford Focus with 70k miles on it should I be worried
how is it now?
I'm wondering if this was the same problem I saw user reviews complain about the 2015 model. I'm staying away from this car if they haven't fixed it.
The new clutch so far is awsome in my 2014 ford focus
How about three years later?
@@Xbuster6 bought an ecosport, stuck with ford.im sure it would have been fine.it was an improvment.
@@superbert35 Awesome to hear! 👍^ ͜^ 👍 Thanks : )
I have this problem with my 12. I have taken it to 4 transmission shops. Ford told me I had to buy a new transmission.
I have a 2012 Ford Focus with the identical problems. I am now on my 6th clutch and 2nd transmission. This on a car with 39600 miles on the odometer. It is now comical. I look forward to the breakdown now, so I can drive a Rental Car.
If my kids drove a Manual transmission like this computer does, I would bar them from driving until they figured out how to shift and drive properly.
+laggzy That's pretty much exactly what I told my dealer. If I wanted to buy a manual car and drive it in the shittiest way possible, then I would have. No one should have to put this amount of money into an automatic car for it to drive like that. I was aware that the car would drive differently, but come on!
Why I never see this video 3 years ago??
Its termed as "shuddering" i had mine replaced it helped but it will mist likely need replaced again
Can someone help me get rid of my 2013 ford focus im stuck with the trash transmission
This has been fixed! If you still have the Powertrain warranty -- take it to the Dealership. I just got mine fixed today. Whoever had this car before me beat the clutch up. They're now installing a REVISED part, and hopefully should correct these problems. Also, there IS an open recall for the transmission and the door latches.
Hey Geno. Do you have an update. Where there any further transmission issues with your Ford after you fixed it?
Ford focus se 2014. I had trouble trans 1,2 gear slip clutch vibrate, 3,4,5,6 fine but when park home tomorrow go to work no trouble 1,2,3,4,5,6 no slip or vibrate nothing weird so when traffic go stop go stop few time again then start again vibrate or slip 1,2 gear
My 2012 ford focus titanium just started having problems. I'll be at a red light then try to take off and I'm stuck for a bit then it goes.. jerks when I'm driving too. I think its my transmission I'm so 😥
I have a 15 focus same issue when acceleration from a stopped position
I just rented this car today with the intent to buy after 3 days. The transmission slips every single in gears 1-3. Hertz needs to tell their customers about known car issues!
ethan5610
Did you get your car fixed or still the same issue on it cuz I have the same issue on my 2015
You were driving the car like a auto weren’t you?
I just bought 2016 same problem 3 weeks after purchase
had my TCM replaced by warranty on 39k mile, hope FORD WORLD WIDE gives 100k mile/7 years warranty program especially on Focus & Fiesta in my Country Indonesia....sad if it don't....only hope that my new replacement doesn't messed up again when iit reach up to 200k Mile
Hi, I own a 2013 Ford Focus 2.0 GDI manual. I believe this problem is the as I have on my car, my car hesitates and shudders on pull off. I have taken my car in numerous times for this issue and had no resolve. I have found a recall on the same year model Focus ST which pertains to the replacement of the wiring harness. I will be taking my car in this to demand this recall be applied to my car as I believe that my car also affected.Contact you dealer and advise them, I am actually quite disappointed that Ford could not identify this themselves. Hope this advice helps
I have the same issues and more
