I agree! I got a steal on a 17 Focus but heavily researched transmission issues first. If I hadn't ran across this video there's a good chance I wouldn't have chosen the vehicle, but this helped me to feel like I had a viable solution to keep things relatively smooth. Very thankful for this online posting!!

My 2014 fiesta started shuddering about a month ago. It now has less than 7000 miles on it. I watched your video, took the car out and followed what you said then drove it around. Didn't shudder once and drove like I just took it off the showroom floor. I'm surprised and relieved. Thanks........

Very appreciative of this posting. I have a 17 model. I had some noticeable shudder shortly after getting the car in the first couple of gears, mainly first. I followed this video and can attest with driving a couple hours a day it kept actual noticeable shudder from occuring for almost exactly two weeks before it began to start up again. Sometimes if I drove the car around town it would shift or engage a little sloppy, but not the actual low speed shuddering that is the main complaint. When it returned I performed what's posted in a safe isolated area again, and it went away once more. With as much as I drive it seems like the DIY solution will be lasting about two weeks in a combination of cold and medium temps. To not have the (small) chore of finding somewhere to perform this a couple times a month I have a low traffic merging area on my daily commute I can floor the car in first gear maybe once a week and see if it keeps the issue from resurfacing, since I'll be keeping the clutch brought in tighter with a weekly aggressive launch. I most recently have done the aggressive launch from about 10mph in first gear to avoid peeling out and that seems to still work for the problem.

I had a slight shudder from 1st to 2nd again and was getting ready to take it back to the dealer. I tried the "clutch scrubbing" and it worked!! Can I subscribe!! Bad ass tip... I also heard that some of those early 2011 thru 2016 little fords had a bad ground design of the car... Instead of grounding to the frame the car it grounds just above the battery to the body which is heavily painted at the factory... Supposedly for other types of transmission issues slipping, shifting, bolting in 1st gear the paint where these vehicles ground does not support enough amperage inside of the tranny... Taking a wire brush and scraping off all the thick paint there clean will fix other major transmission issues too... Scrape any paint off of the bolt too and remember to cover the cable end and bolt with a little dielectric grease or whatever that stuff is called... We don't want any corrosion plus better contact... This will give these dry clutch transmissions proper amperage thus making them shift and double clutch efficiently... I think it's right near the battery which is suspect because most cars are grounded to the frame... Bad design... Many owners of older Fords swear by this 5-minute fix and say they have had no further problems... Great channel... I like this clutch scrubbing GIG!! The way things are going with the supply chain those updated clutches may never arrive... Thanx man!!!

First off, thanks SOOO much for these Ford videos! Have helped me with my 2016 Edge and now my 2014 Focus. I bought the Focus, not knowing what I was getting into. It has 140K miles, and is in great condition, BUT the trans shudder is annoying at least and could possibly be unsafe at worst. I did the procedure detailed in the video and for a week it seemed to alleviate the issue. BUT, it came back and worse still, now when I accelerate hard from a stop, when car shifts from first to second there is a VERY loud/hard "thunk" that is heard and felt. It is only heard/felt from 1st to 2nd. I have confirmed two more times that under a hard acceleration that "thunk" happens. If I accelerate moderately or lightly it is fine (w/exception of intermittent shudder). Ford dealers in my area are about $150 just to diagnose--so hoping someone may have ideas on that "thunk".

Just bought my 13' focus, I love it, I do notice a bit of a 'shutter" when I am in stop and go traffic, but I tend to drive like a "grandma" anyway in any vehicle I drive. I noticed when I have to lean a little more on the gas it does it a little, but I figured it was part of how the car drives with this type of transmission. At any rate, at 51K miles, it's still under the extended Ford Warranty, and my dealership gave me a 2 year drive train warranty, and I have a 4 year overall warranty/emergency roadside assistance- the whole nine yards. I have to take my car in for the fuel tank recall in December, I'll probably mention the shutter to them at that time and see what transpires. Normally I buy Honda's, but right now Honda's only real 'hatchback"- the Fit is a total joke compared to the civic hatchback of days gone by. Those were fun, reliable vehicles in their day.

I have a 2012 Ford Focus SE Sedan with 107,532 miles. I have never had a problem with this car and have never had to replace anything with the drive-train. My transmission started shuttering recently. The real reason for a shudder in the transmission, is when transmission fluid leaks into the clutch pack, this transmission has been designed with a dry clutch, not a wet clutch. You are going to get a little bit of shudder when the clutch gets wet due to slippage. I have always driven this car aggressively, They truly are sporty little cars, DCT transmissions are not made for slugish driving. Don't be afraid to put the power down, even if it is only a 167 peak horsepower 4 cylinder engine, you're going to help increase the life of the vehicle.

Spot on, great video, thank you.
We have a 2013 focus that is driven most of the time by my wife and I've noticed a slight shudder when accelerating gently. I thought the friction surface was getting glazed over and did a few hard accelerations and it then drives fine until I drive it a few weeks later and get the same issue. We recently had a recall letter for the software update and it has stopped the transmission whirring and clicking whilst parked and it seems to shift slightly smoother. My Ford dealer also said that they have ordered an upgraded clutch which is on back order so I hope its the F model you mentioned and it will fix the problem for good.

I got the letter from Ford for the recall and software update. since then, there is just a slight shudder sometimes and have not heard any grinding. They have also put me on order for a new clutch, but they had not given me any info about the issue. they had just told me that it needs a new clutch but its safe to drive see you in a month. This video definitely opened up my eyes on the issue. I hope its the new model also and the problem is fixed for good.

Hey guys, We had the new clutch fitted just over a month ago and have driven approximately a thousand miles on it. The car drives really well now with zero juddering and smooth gear changes. I haven't noticed any strange mechanical noises and am very pleased with the outcome so far. I recently drove a VW Golf with a DSG gearbox whilst on a business trip and I would say that my Focus now compares very closely with the VW. The jury is still out on the longevity but Ford has extended my warranty on the transmission for seven years so they must be confident.

Very interesting. I just had my 2014 Focus, build date 1/13/2014, not leaking, reflashed for shudder. The shudder read out was 200rpm. The reflash worked great for about a week, then I started getting shudder on 1st to 2nd transition again. I tried your scrubbing technique, and it helped dramatically. So what is it that makes this scrubbing technique work? Does it change or reset the learning parameters? Does it physically affect the clutch, as in getting rid of glazing or dust buildup?
Another related question, how long does it take for the firmware version that was flashed to show up on Oasis? I checked Oasis two days after the flash was done, and it does not list any firmware version under the F/W menu. This made me doubt that a flash was done, so I asked the service advisor to get me the firmware number that was installed, this service was made 09/19/2014. I have not heard back from the service advisor, nor has oasis been updated. I contacted the service manager and he told me it can take up to a month for the changes to be reflected in oasis. Is this true? The invoice lists the part installed for the update as 7B546

Hi there. We have a 2010 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI Powershift. We had the gearbox reconditioned in June 2017. The car would throw up "Transmission Malfunction", but the guy who did the gearbox said to do a master reset. Sometimes the car would rev up by itself. Anyway, it was driving alright generally, no problems for a while, apart from the odd warning.
The battery died a few weeks ago, we pushed the car once, and we changed the battery and alternator. Since then, reverse has been very intermittent. Now it's mostly not engaging. We've been told it's the clutch burning out and depositing junk on the magnets. Any advice please? Thanks.

@@marcoJcarbo From personal experience (2012 Focus SE) I floor once a day to get on the highway to work, and I don't have any shudder problems. But, when I do a long road trip (300+ miles) and get back into city stop-and-go traffic it starts to shudder again. This is only a problem between 0-10 mph, and that goes away after flooring it once or twice. Definitely a personality quirk of the car.

This thing works on powershift thanks buddy , the 2015 is more refined, because of peak.summers , continuous shifting on low speeds in stop and go traffic gives a message that transmission is too.hot , wait for 5 mins , depress brake , according to forums i read its the message to.prevebt the clutch from.wearing out , the cars moves without any problem even after the message. I don't know what black magic you use, but this works. To be honest I was very skeptical. Trying to find a "country road" in South Florida is not easy. I finally found a large parking lot in an industrial park and performed the "clutch scrub".
It was exhilarating to say the least. But the amazing thing was...it worked. My 2014 Focus had some annoying clutch shudder off the line and now it's completely gone.
I don't know when or if it will return, but at least I have a fix.

I also own a 2014 focus trim is titanium. This car has shudder since new. I called ford about it once I had enough. No sooner than I call that weekend my tcm goes out. They get me in for tcm replacement and everything is fine for the first 2 days. Then driving one the third day it shudders and slips so bad it's like someone dropped and anchor off the back. Waiting to hear bake from ford again to see what the repair or dang will be this time. It is a shame that ford tells people it's ok to keep driving the car and they become unsafe to be driven on the road.
If I was not in the country road I would have been in trouble. And as the tech stated in the video ford is dragging their feet on realising new parts that may help. But I must disagree with not driving the car softly we bought this for fuel savings not to drive it hard firm pedal driving lowers fuel efficiency and overall range. This may sound like a rant to some but I has a former ford master tech and know how the adaptive shift strategy works. Ford is trying to bandaid a major problem. This cars tcm 10 year 150k extended Warranty. Clutch for shudder 125k warranty. Come on this is a but much ford. My humble option they need to pull this transmission and replace it with something better shifting for all ranges of drivers.

With only ~8.5k miles on it now, we've had it in once for this issue. Essentially, shuddered horribly when hot, but would drive just fine before that 20-30min mark and is delivering over 30mpg in mixed driving. Having passengers seems to make the issue more pronounced. PCM update was all that was tried to date and it hasn't worked. Would love to time bringing it back in when the "F" version of the clutch becomes more readily available to make sure that we get a (more) permanent fix. Not sure how or when to do that, but curious to know more about this new version clutch and how we go about getting this properly handled.

I have been dealing with this for some time. This problem started happening almost immediately. I have taken it to the Dealer at least 5 times all on my dime. The Dealer is about a 2-hour drive from my home. I wasn't scared at first and as always they tell you the driving performance of this car takes time to learn how to drive it. At first, I tried everything that told me and did exactly as they asked, however, the last time something happened, that something fell off my car. I had been telling them something was seriously wrong with my car and this was going to be the last time I would have it brought in and if they could not fix it they could keep it!! For this car, it wasn't just the shudder it was much more than that. I finally talked to the service manager and Ford as well. I felt like if I could somehow make them understand in their vocabulary maybe I could get this car fixed right. Talking to the service manager I said... Look I don't mean to be disrespectful but have you ever driven an eighteen wheeler? He said yes I have, I said great now we are getting somewhere... When you drove the truck did you ever experience losing a drive line, he replied, unfortunately, yes, I said me too. Now if you know what that feels like then maybe you can understand what driving this car feels like (this was before the part fell off my car). He told me I could have the car towed in at their expense, and so after the 4th or 5th time on working on the transmission, my warranty mileage was increased to 150,000 miles instead of the 36,000. Now I will be taking it back to the shop again. I have decided I don't want to deal with this kind of frustration for the car because if they keep using the same parts and replacing it over and over and over again it will literally never be truly fixed. I can't believe all the problems I have had with this car. I and my Family have always been a Ford family but this one really takes the cake. I only hope when the real decision comes down in October it will be in our favor (the customer). Oh, and BTW the last transmission they put in really dropped my gas mileage. Wishing everyone the very best if you have one of these cars, and may your outcome be successful.
