  • Oh boy, was this one a nailbiter. I hopped aboard a random game this afternoon, and before I knew it I was in a battle to the death. Not actual death, but the death of my 86 game win streak! This game was so bleak I actually reached out to my opponent to extend a moment of charity, which he immediately rebuffed. Can I come back from a nearly impossible game position? Watch and see!

I have been watching you since you first uploaded the nin videos 10+ years ago. I remember some of those Omnath games you showed and are still some of the best games I have ever seen play out in 1v1 edh. I have since been tweeking nin to fair well in high power pods and she still delivers even to this day. 👍
My question to you is do you think that the power creep in edh as a whole is a good thing? I feel like the multiplayer game at least has gotten more and more spikey since the early days of the format. Now decks like nin struggle to keep up even when testing each and every new good card that comes out

Hey there, sorry it's taken me so long to respond. Fundamentally, I think the continued power creep has been bad for EDH. Though it's easy to confuse "power creep = bad" with "power creep alongside curator apathy = bad". At the heart of it, I think that's the real problem with modern EDH. There are no voices on the rules committee advocating for more competitive players. Sheldon Menery was proudly and overtly adversarial to Spike players, to the point where he refused to do anything that might improve their EDH experience. Consequently, there are many many cards and commanders running amok now who collectively degrade the play experience for players like me.
I've got a lot going on right now, but at some point I hope to have some long conversations with a few of the EDH Rules Committee members. One of them is named Scott Larabee, a fortunate coincidence. Scott and I go way way back, all the way back to 1995 when he began hosting high level events at the Costa Mesa Women's Club in Southern California. Scott and I connected through email at the tail end of last year, and I hope to resume those conversations in the months ahead.
If I make headway, I'll inform people on my channel. My goal is to get my voice onto the Rules Committee, so we can at least have a few sane bannings that afford Spikes the same curated experience the Johnnys and Timmys get. EDH is supposed to the the "inclusive format", so it would be hard to argue against my point of view. Stay tuned, and thanks for watching my content!

@@Thebrianweissman Thanks for the long reply! I would love to maybe see an Omnath game one day. The deck would need quite the overhaul given how many cards have come out in the years and at this point it may take too long to update. My main problem with the format has been how people ask you to “rule zero" your power levels like that will solve the problem but everyone has their own definition of power level. I played a game months ago. My friends all changed decks after one of them said that Taigam, Ojutai Master used to be "cEDH'' so my deck was going to be at that level. I proceeded to have a terrible game since even though my deck was good it was nowhere near fast enough to keep up.
My other issue is, yes I am glad that Wizards is reprinting old cards to make the game more accessible to players but if everyone has a mana vault/crypt in their deck the problem becomes who is going to draw these cards first. Sol Ring was just one card everyone had access to but now there are so many “staples” I see at least one per game. Saying that old cards should not be accessible is not fair to say and they should be in moderation but the more people that have access to all these cards the more people will end up bringing them to casual tables causing the casual players to feel the need to get them.
I helped a person with a deck on reddit a few days ago and every card in the deck was taken right off of edhrec or was a staple. That site is an entire discussion I could have in itself but letting you see the cards you should be running takes a toll on unique deck design and when everyone uses the site at this point to make their decks you kind of feel like you need to use it to keep up. EDH used to be a fun format with people playing old/new cards that they found or just liked. Now I can't go 1-2 games without someone playing a smothering tithe rhystic study or sylvan library
