I am confused by seeing a lot of people are keep saying this movie a toxic feminists and man hating film, however there a lot of people saying this movie is good and cuz of you Du Cinema said this movie is good, then I trusted you more than most sexist people
I just watched it and it’s a rollercoaster of emotions, political view and hidden meanings not forgetting the laughs and the fact that Ryan gosling is literally me
I just thought it was way too political and at the end they wouldn’t let the kens join the Supreme Court even though there are four women in the Supreme Court in the USA
“Weird Barbie” is supposed to be Gymnastic Barbie, I think. She bent every way and was more fun to play with. This making her an outcast with regular Barbies.
I feel bad that many people are posting hatred towards this movie, I watched barbie movie in theatre and I can tell you that it was one of the best movie i have seen till yet in theatres. I loved the story and comedy and Ryan gosling acting was superb in the movie ,this movies tells us that both men and women are important part of society.
i dont think barbie was a very good movie, it was normal, i ddint like how they empower women only by depicting men as bad and evil, but i enjoyed the comedy
I really liked it too, almost cried when Barbie experienced a wide range of human emotion at the park and told the old lady she was beautiful. It's a very good movie, but you gotta be actually braindead to believe the dudebros bitching about it "hating men" and "glorifying misandry". Like did we watch the same goddamn movie lmfao

Objectively, by story quality it was a very garbage movie. You can tell when someone takes a political message, tries to build a plot that supports it, and staples a beloved IP to it in order to sell tickets. What I find hilarious though, is that the movie unintentionally showed the nasty, bitter, and unhinged faults of feminism and misandry while giving young men (many of whom feel like they're being treated like Ken) a hero who is "literally me" as the meme goes. It's the most unintentionally based movie of all time.
I genuinely will never understand people who say they hated Barbie. I LOVED ITTTTT LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT WAS SO AMAZING AND LETS NOT EVEN TALK ABOUT THE COMEDYYYYYY. I never really laugh in movies but in the cinema I was at, everyone was giggling every two minutes. Loved it.
Well i think its undeniable that the movie is incredibly entertaining. Id just argue that the great amount of comedy does hurt/corrupt the message from time to time
NGL It was funny that there was a "I'm not like other girls" character in the story, and she slowly begins to accept their femininity; I had a similar kind of journey like that growing up, and I like to dabble in my fem energy nowadays bec its fun. I don't hate the stereotype, I just like how fun it is if you want it to be. It felt nice to be represented in that way

The teenager disliked Barbie and what she truly represented instead of condemning the people who made her feel that way about her. The mother was projecting her problems on Barbie in order to try and deal with her pain and reconnect with her fond memories of the past. Little Girls don't think about all the misogynistic things in the world, they love Barbie, they love playing all kinds of jobs and enjoy the freedom that comes with it. But all too often, as they grow up, all this is shattered by people who portray femininity as weak, evil or a joking matter. Similarly to what happens to Barbie after being in the real world, her world is shattered. It takes away girls' fighting spirit, it tries to bring them down as if it is not a woman's place to be great. As Barbie became depressed she mentioned "maybe one of the more leadership orientated Barbies is going to snap out of it and do something about this" it shows how a girl's spirt can be broken and how she can believe that there is no way she is ever going to be able to change the world around her. But this film shows us: that is not true. You must reconnect with your childhood self when you still saw things soberly, you must rid yourself of the hateful sentiments you were fed. Then, you will find your strength and you will find a team of those who stand behind you whenever you're confronted with misogyny by those who have not been able to find their true self or rid themselves of their hatred.
Yes I agree, I’m a female and used to think girly girls were pathetic, which is sad since I was only a child, but I’ve been slowly breaking that stereotype in my head. This movie definitely helped that :)

During those times i didnt know how to interact with my feminine side, my inner child. Since i thought growing up meant getting rid of my barbies and princessy dresses. Now i really crave that sense of fantasy and fun again, even if its a little bit through fsshion and mskeup.
I think a lot of people hating this movie for Ken’s treatment by the Barbies. I don’t think any of those haters were ever little girls who actually played with Barbie and put Ken on a leash and tied him to a tree. Ken was always awkward and a little useless.

TW: abuse, DV I was born in the US and the daughter of an immigrant family. I watched my mom support my abusive father and his treatment for years. I grew up hating the Barbie dolls he gave to me because I hated not measuring up and obligated to be playing with them just because I was born and forced to be an average girl. My mom worked tirelessly in a beauty salon to help pay the bills. When she finally had the money to buy out a salon, she was met with a lot of criticism from my dad and she also had a hard time speaking English so we were met with very many obstacles. Through consistency and determination my mother finally had enough money to leave my dad. When he couldn't hurt her he would hurt me and I would stand up for her whenever I could and he hated that. It wasn't until he left bruises on my face and back that I finally had enough evidence to not be forced to spend weekends with him. It was only until a few years ago but I picked up my Barbie's again and show them the love and care I could never openly give to myself. This movie had me in pieces and would put me back together again. Oppenheimer was also phenomenal and I can't believe I am alive and have the means and circumstances to have seen it on the 21st. Thank you to everyone who made these films possible and the people that show love for Barbie
I had a pretty quiet childhood and loved Barbie when I was young. But this movie has a lot more to give than its shiny gloss. It's a lot deeper than one might think: I cried too, and it opened my eyes on some realities. This is already so much more than most movies will ever do.

So what we are NOT going to do is spread a narrative that the animated movies were not substantial in storytelling and execution, especially the older ones. The Barbie cinematic universe is one that took decades to build in the minds of girls and young women who grew up with it. I have watched this live action one and it is FANTASTIC, but the message that it teaches can also be found in the Fairytopia series and other movies. I understand everyone is excited about Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's involvement in the movie and it's bringing in new fans of Barbie that little to no knowledge about her lore and storytelling, but discounting the predecessors of this movie, be it the more nuanced older films or the aesthetically-driven recent ones, is not something that should be done AT ALL. But then I guess we wouldn’t say that because those were marketed towards boys and girls, and not just girls like Barbie was? Funny enough, this new Barbie movie is targeted at all age groups, including (you guessed it) children. Also,it seems extremely tone deaf to say that “Be Yourself” is not a nuanced topic when we live in an age where people face discrimination just for reasons such as sexuality, gender, race, physical differences and even things as inconsequential as having their own opinions differ from the majority. And yes, Barbie did address issues of not being able-bodied in a world designed for the able-bodied(Fairytopia 1), having different opinions and doctrines (Mariposa), being of a different race (Mariposa 2), being an immigrant (Island Princess), evolving friendships that cause rifts (Diamond Castle), gender discrimination and restrictions in occupations (Musketeers), and much more (I cannot start writing this here, I just graduated I refuse to go back to writing thesis papers). And all this I recognized at the age of 12, watching with a male cousin that was half my age I was babysitting, when I finally unfiltered access to the internet and could dedicate hours a day to finding Barbie movies on CZcams split into 20 part videos. Granted, I am able to communicate these lessons better as a degree holder, but that does not discount the capability of my tweenage brain for being able to recognize these topics. I’m not saying that this Barbie movie isn’t amazing, i absolutely LOVE it. It addresses a lot of issues head on and unfiltered unlike the animated ones that had to be delicate with the subject because it was media created solely for children and teenagers, however this review doesn’t get to discount all the foundation that has been laid by its predecessors, especially when he has not watched them (as seen in his comments on the creator who DID watch all the movies). People don’t get to come into already established fandoms, fail to gather context about previous material, and then dismiss said previous material in half of a sentence while creating a video review (again, it was a very fair and well-done review, I enjoyed it) of the new material. No cinematic universe deserves to be discounted because of the age group it serves.
While watching the movie, it made me think of how the subtleties of the story telling and character develop pleasantly distracted me from the fact that I was actually in this movie. Im literally him.
The movie was so insanely cohesive with everything from the dialogue, set design, music that moved with the story. I mean not to mention the call outs to 2001 A Space Odyssey and The Matrix there was so much thought put into it that it's hard to hate it because it's done so well that I don't think we've had a movie done quite like this in forever and yes it helps it's attached to a major IP.
I thought the opposite. It felt totally unhinged to me. As much as I love Greta this movie felt like a poorly written but well-intentioned film. No subtlety whatsoever. Thank god for Ryan Gosling making the cliche jokes funny
My favorite point the movie made was that what men need to truly discover who they are is encouragement from other men. The idea that men need to dominate women to have an identity or that men need a girlfriend to be seen as worthy is poisoning not only women, but also cripples men emotionally and isolates men from eachother. It makes the men that should be brothers into threats, and it keeps men apart. Just remember, you are KENOUGH
No, unless you are gay and want a boyfriend you are not Kenough without a woman. Men don't want to live loveless lives 'discovering' who they are any more than women do. People find personal and social validation in having a romantic partner. Let's not pretend otherwise. And we don't live in a world, certainly not in the West, where men dominate women as a group. Both sexes have their issues but neither is really dominant overall. The problem with feminism is that it refuses to allow there to be instances in which men are disadvantaged in society unless it is their own fault due to 'toxic masculinity' and they accept Feminism as their Lord (Lady) and Saviour. The idea they might find their own solutions is seen as dangerous and 'patriarchal'. There's nothing feminists loathe more on earth than men's rights activists, even very mild ones like Jordan Peterson. I think it's that the film is actually satirising, that extreme feminism/matriarchy is as ridiculous as the worst of the manosphere/patriarchy.

I went out of the cinema feeling hollow because this movie made me question everything. Like how Ken and Barbie question their existence, I questioned my sources if happiness in this life if these are forced upon me or does it really made me happy in the first place.
Omg I saw it yesterday and am feeling this hollowness today. For me it’s existential also. I remember the idealism of my youth, the joy of playing with Barbies, and then facing the reality of my life now as a middle aged woman. Not really sure who I am, since I spent way too much time trying not to age and trying to fit some sort of shallow ideal of femininity, only to realize now that it is actually perceived as weakness and inadequacy. All the “masculine” traits I need to be successful are in direct opposition to the identity I’ve created.

As a woman, I didn't notice Barbies struggles much, because those are my real struggles too, but I noticed how Ken went into a rollercoaster to just learn how to express his feelings, how he don't need to be a rolemodel or a hero, and I get a little frustrated on how men couldn't see that past the "feminist propaganda" they so call LOL
Pretty sure most of the people saying that didn't even watch the movie. Ken is also a victim in this. The Barbies treated him like what men treated women in the past. Just a person who lives in their house. Then when the Kens discovered freedom and there fought back the Barbie won but understood they messed up and gave Ken limited Freedom

I don’t think Barbie is an indictment against men. It’s a criticism of patriarchy and how women and men all deserve their own sense of autonomous identity. There’s literally a scene where Gloria says there should be an ordinary Barbie, who could be a regular housewife trying to have a normal day. Barbie also apologizes to Ken for not treating him with respect and the Kens are allowed back into the government for equal representation. The ending has the Kens fight because it shows how patriarchal systems encourage men to compete and fight for dominance, which is very self-destructive. It’s not saying being feminine or masculine is bad, it’s saying simplified gender roles and standards are toxic. It’s not a perfect film, but I liked it. Plus, at the end of the day, it’s a BARBIE movie. Don’t take it too seriously.
I also liked the detail about how this mattel intern says “I am a man but I have no power… am I a woman?” In regards to Barbies statement that “all men have power here” which is a generalization (also how Ken mentioned he “could” have been everything but then lists a lot of obstacles including his lack of a phd etc)

Watched it yesterday with friends and we freaking loved it. It's hilarious, it has a positive message and the audience stood up to clap a few times during the movie.

This movie had me thinking she legit deserves at least an Oscar nomination for this film. It was so beyond perfect. When they finally drop a line that roasts you, a guy who's mansplained ("pretend you've never seen the Godfather!"), you crack up and go "goddamn they got me, respect." Loved it so much, it's my favorite modern movie in forever, it just gets it. If you've got no hate in your heart, this movie resonated with you and made you laugh at yourself at least once.

Honestly enjoyed the movie more then I thought I would. I think it's funny that for some reason people think the movies is bad because it's about hyper feminism and toxic masculinity, when I literally (me) think that's what the movie is making fun of and the actual message of the movie that you pointed out is "finding yourself". Making fun of “toxic masculinity” is the exact thing people are complaining about. The vast majority of men got tired of this shit some decades ago already. My awareness/interest in the Barbie movie went from 0% to 110% in the 75 seconds it took to watch that first teaser trailer. It was like The Lion King. My brain was like WHAT IS THIS. I NEED MORE.

This movie is amazing. Anyone who complains about the message or the movie being an "attack on men" have literally not even watched it. If you're a decent human being that believes everyone deserves respect, you'll like the movie.
How can you watch it and not think it’s an attack on masculinity? The movie is awful on a cinematic and technical basis even if you remove it awful message.

I saw the movie Thursday night - a day before was officially released. The whole audience and including myself and husband dressed up. It was sold out. People were cheering , laughing and clapping in scenes. Honestly it was so much fun and Absolutely hilarious. I think the creativity was off the charts for the set. I love Margot and Ryan playing Barbie and Ken. The scenes in Santa Monica and Venice beach were done very well. I give it all 5 stars. I think Barbie and Ken should always stay together though. The outcome of the movie was finding out that you can be and become anything. Loved it! Great vid analysis btw. Subscribed!!
The theater I was in (we did Oppenheimer at 1130->Barbie at 3) popped off SOOO hard for this movie, I couldn't believe I could laugh as loudly as I did as much as I did and not have the crowd hate me. It was the funniest, most correctly toned stuff I've ever seen in a theater. It wasn't anti-male at all, Act 1 is all an unspoken problematic matriarchy, they just don't say it out loud. It's genius. We see both sides of the coin, get an amazing 3rd act, a tear-jeaking ending, and reminded that you need to be OK to be you. Chef's kiss from me, and the zingers. Goddamn, the zingers. The "it's woke anti-male" crowd are literally too dumb to understand satire.

I watched it a few days ago, and the movie made me cry. I'm a dude who never played with Barbie dolls as a child, and I didn't expect this movie to be this good. The movie shows that both men and women have their own problems. Men always want women's approval. It's true, because we just want to be loved. That's why men work so hard under big pressure, to be approved by the person he loves. This goes for almost any men. Then, the movie shows that women actually understands men and appreciate them for their effort. And most importantly, they love men for what they are. This movie is an art. It's the piece that will unite humanity.
I didn't get that from that movie lol because they still dismissed the men at the end of the film lol I mean they didn't even want to give them any sort of high position and they just settled for a less power position.

I just came back from seeing the movie before this video, and The Matrix was exactly one of the movies that ran through my head as I watched Barbie and was thinking what movie story Barbie was taking notes from.
I loved the movie!!! Ryan was everything, perfect Ken hands down. This movie isn't for everyone for sure, but it had great messaging through the laughs. I did cry at points.
The fact that the Barbieland matriarchy didn't give equality to men, and relegated them to lower rungs of power in the end, went completely against the messages of the rest of the movie.

Thus far, I've observed there's a lot of abrasive backlash from opposers of the film-- which goes to prove the direct problem of the underlying message behind Barbie. But perhaps one of the most insightful moments I took away from this film, was how it taught more about the experience of the evolution of humanity's ideas.
I saw it last night with friends and we all laughed and the whole theater stood up and the end to clap. I’ve always loved Barbie but I didn’t think I would relate to her character as much as I did, she made me cry when she had her crisis of not knowing who she was in the world.
I think without having seen it yet that the Barbie movie wins by being super creative with a really boring source material. The idea of making a Barbie movie with two Hollywood Superstars sounds so absurd on paper but seems to work so well on film because of all the details put into the product. It's something fresh and exciting, a great mixture of different stuff. That's actually very smart. Many movies are the copy of the copy and the current environement encourages remakes, sequels and safe bets instead of creativity. Okay, looking for creativy in the absolute mainstream may be the wrong place but when it happens, it hopefully enables other filmmakers to create new and exciting material (even out of already existing stories) instead of the same same again and again.

Never do that! i repeat: Never do that ever again! I was totally wrong about the Barbie movie. It is trash² but it would also have been trash without its extreme agenda of feminism thrown into the audience's face. It has many obvious flaws. On the surface it really looked like Hollywood finally had made a creative, clever, fun movie instead of the same-same drivel again and again! But I was so wrong because I got deceived by the trailer. It was also my own fault, had I read some reviews before it, I could have known what is really going on. But I don't regret watching it because it's a lesson learned and boy is it a lesson learned.

In the theater I whispered to my boyfriend “kens a horse girl” little did I know it was the quietest part of the movie many people heard me and someone’s dad cackled. Btw I can say he’s a horse girl because I’m an equestrian of ten years

I am a woman and I hated the idea this film tried to push - women should be superior to men. Even in the end, when a Ken asked President Barbie if a Ken could sit in the higher court, she said NO. Throughout the film, everyone said 'men bad, women amazing'. Why can't we be equal?
The film can't end neutral because Barbie land never been the perfect world, but the dream world where gender roles are swapped. So, at the end Kens have basically the same rights as Barbies, they can live for them selves and not just for Barbies, BUT they are still relegated in second position. I saw in that a criticism to people who still say that Femminism is now obsolete because women already have all the rights... Sure, more or less like Kens in the end of the film, theoretically yes but actually no XD
The whole point of the kens is to show how women are treated in the real world. I think the ending was supposed to show that we still have a long way until we are all equal in society
That was meant to parallel the scene between Gloria and her boss who basically just gave her a little bit more of power just as long as her ideas were profitable, she didn’t magically become a higher up, neither the boss changed besides being a bit more flexible
Misandry? Did you even watch the movie? The movie dissects gender as a whole, and how all gender roles play into life. I’m also not too surprised by the movie as it was directed by Greta Gerwig. Greta’s previous films (Lady Bird, Frances Ha, etc.) are all social commentary art pieces. When people like you make comments like these, it just proves how shallow minded you are.
Also, characters like Gloria do not end up magically having a higher up position in the company and her boss doesn’t change at all besides giving her just a bit more of power which parallels a bit with barbie president and kens that are starting to have a bit more of power in barbie world… is basically mirroring something there

You encapsulated many of the thoughts and feelings I had when I watched it. It’s a fantastic movie. I’m sure it’ll become a cult classic. Btw, I did the double feature, and watched Oppenheimer a couple hours after. And they are very complimentary.
I heard the movie was deeper than expected and better than you'd think. So I went to see it and.... liked it. Actually, quite a bit. But I still wasn't sure if it deserved the accolades it was getting. But then it kind of sunk in over a few days and I realized it's a near-perfect film and is one of the best movies made in quite a while. And not only is it a good movie, but a socially important one. It rekindles a much-needed look at stereotypes and expectations and does it in a very non-confrontational way. And the best thing about it? Even though it's non-confrontational and respectful, ultra-conservatives who can only view things through political lenses are apoplectic over it thinking it's a direct attack on everything they hold dear (which is very sad).
The BARBIE movie was so AMAZING! It showed how Ken is `Kenough` and doesn't need to be toxic or crave for Barbie's attention. To all the smart and intelligent beings, what PURPOSE of life did Ken discover??

I think people who don't understand this movie are either not millennials or never played with barbies. When I played as a child; ken was always sidelined. Not because I was anti-men because I wanted a female to get all the spotlight being from a South Asian country where men received all the glory. Barbie was beautiful but I never compared myself to her. It's just a toy.
The Barbie movie also reference that real life moment where the corporations where debating that they were people (circa 2008 maybe? ) in court. I found that very funny really. I loved this movie because I viewed it as a sarcastic mockery of the most extremes of toxic femininity and toxic masculinity. I think the sarcasm was too extreme and people took it as feminist propaganda gospel, when it actuality it was a mockery of the feminist ideals that are just ridiculous. The reality is that even in the Barbie movie, they know women are the only ones that can give birth and they made that clear. Ryan Gosling is 100% the best choice for Ken. It literally deprograms the toxic masculinity internet culture makes him seem. He's still literally me, but he can do that while not being a misogynist (he's not, but i mean on memes and such) Margot is so enjoyable as Barbie, she's such a good actress and you can really tell when she doesn't feel like Barbie anymore. She's also perfect for the role. All in all I laughed all the time watching this, and I barely laugh at movies. This has to be my favorite movie of the year.

Went to watch it yesterday with the girlfriend and some friends. We had a really good time. Ryan Gosling was really funny. The attention to details was insane. They are toys and act like it. Great! The message was sometimes a little bit on the nose (there's literally a speech at some point), but really subtle at other times. Particularly, I like how the Ken in Barbie World have the struggles of the women in the Real World and it's really interesting how they play with those idea. It works really great and I thought it was very clever. Overall they managed to handle the minefield that could have been Barbie very well and we had a great time. I'm amused to see that a lot of people (men mostly) are confused by the movie. Last night on Google the ratings we're very split, with people rating either 5 or 1, with an average of 2.6 (quite split as you can see!). A lot of people went there expecting a kids movie (have they not see the previews??) and were not ready to receive the feminist message. The backlash on Fox News, the right and in the ''masculinity'' circles will be strong for sure... Anyway, now we're out to see Oppenheimer tonight on IMAX. Should be Kenough for sure.

I haven't seen it yet, but one of the negative reviews that I saw said that the movie was pretty negative about men overall though. That the movie had no positive representations of men and that even though Ken goes on a journey to become a person, he ends up basically in the same place: under Barbie's heel. Furthermore, when they get back to Barbieland, Kens are denied any authority whatsoever until women have more power in the real world. It sounds like the movie's answer to sexism and misogyny is for the Barbies to treat Kens the way that women have been historically treated in this world. That doesn't sound like a positive message to me. There should be mutual respect, not dominance by any gender.

It's like our Real World but reversed where women mainly hold the power and the men are just there (therefore they're just Ken's lol). What I like about the ending, which I'm sure a lot of people have missed, is that the Ken's can finally have a role in the parliamentary, although they gotta start small and slow, but it's still an improvement, kinda like how women gotta fight for their place in society (like having the right to vote, run in election, have jobs etc.). I think they mean more part when they show the real world as way more misogynistic than it actually is. Like how that guy came up to but smack Barbie so blatantly. I mean they said in an interview, that they had trouble filming that sequence, because people weren't acting misogynistic enough. "Men rule the world" is just not true anymore. Loads of western countries had many female queens and presidents, and here in europe more women then men are going into politics. I mean i live in a country where a female politician is seen as the hero for the mostly conservative farmers party. The movie went out of its way to portray this world as patriarchal and misogynist to excuse the immoral acts the women did in the movie to keep their matriarchy. But yes, i think the message ken learned that he doesn't have to live his life just trying to make womens lifes better, is a message lots of young men, including me needed to hear. I've grown up believing my worth is in protecting and providing for women, and it's driving my self-worth into the ground realizing women today don't even want that.
@@DrTheRich The movie IS supposed to be over the top and exaggerated, and a lot of the time, movies and media use exaggeration and fiction as a storytelling ploy to communicate messages. I can also imagine that it's part of the uncanny vibe that it was going for, and a highlight to the contrast between the matriarchy and patriarchy (Barbieland and the real world). We HAVE progressed a ton as a society and I am so thankful for that because I can do things that weren't seen as "okay" or "appropriate" for me to do as a woman like before, but the existence of female leaders where you live doesn't automatically imply that gender-based prejudice and bigotry in other views of life just don't exist.
IT WAS THE FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER! A def 10/10, so unexpected, so funny, so loveable, so emotional. It really highlights like political views and gender roles and what Barbie has done for people, it was just so good. Not spoiling, but the ending made me cry. Would see again, just so not what you would think!
The final few scenes of Ruth walking with Barbie in discussion of her "ending" is so moving and I think is the part with the most meaning, not just for women, but as a projection of humanity. There is no ending for Barbie, and there never has been. She is an idea and a figure created for the basis of being an item that girl's could play with and project their imaginations onto, rather than playing INTO a role (like being a mother through the babydolls girls played with in the beginning of the movie). As Ruth stated, ideas never die, humans do, but it's the ideas that humans created that pushes and challenges evolution in a never-ending dance. Consumerism birthed a "sex-sells" culture, and therefore, beauty standards. Patriarchy birthed toxic masculinity, which in turn, creates stigmatization on both male and females and imbalance of leadership. Emotions are shunned because its "too complicated" when shared. These are all human ideas that we have to continue to live through, and the ideas that are being projected to figures like Barbies and, by extension, little girls. If you think about it, no toy targeted for little boys have as much societal projection and controversy as those for girls. Barbie the film, of course, hits harder to watch as a woman especially through blatant relatability in dialogue, like in America Ferrera's monologue. We were called out, but it felt good, and we felt SEEN. It's a film more for than kids or just women. Everyone can take something away from this film, and how we project the frequent problems on society on ourselves.
i LOVED this movie- it sparked so many beautiful emotions and as a young woman it really hit in all the right places. it portrays the beauty and struggle of womanhood- and i loved that ken got a growth arc of finding himself outside of barbie! and greta gerwig’s artistic vision tied it all together in a perfect little bow
It's so impressive that Ryan Gosling became a sex-icon not by looks but by being a great actor. When he got cast for The Notebook, the director told him "you're just a regular guy who looks a bit nuts." and thats why he got the role. You could even make a point that the success of that movie and his performance in it changed beauty standards for men.
Great analyses! I must add it melted my heart when the Kens galopped their way after the Kens' war just to find Barbies remade the Barbie-constitution, which I think was a referece to Monty Python's KingArthur, who also galopped his country to find that nobody actually acknowledges his power. This movie was surprisingly smart, hilarious and moving at the same time. Amazing acting by - obviously - Gosling, also by Margot, and I was happy to see Ferrara, too.

Watched this movie yesterday and it was one of the best movies i ever watched and the story is beautiful the emotional scenes the quirkiness and one of my fav characters are BARBIE AND KEN cuz they are the PERFECT barbie dolls :)
I honestly feel like I got a mostly different message than other watchers. Of course I got the point of being yourself and being Kenough, but to me it was just about life. Being human is beautiful and full of messy and wonderful opportunities. Barbie gave up a life with everything she could ever want in exchange for a very chaotic and ever changing world. It's a beautiful message about impermanence and how things constantly change, and some of that change can be up to you. I hope more people also got this message because it is so profound and can be easily lost in all the pink.

I’ll be honest, I think Ken’s storyline is underrated. He always was an accessory for Barbie, no more important then her clothes, which makes the scenes in the real world not only hilarious, but also a bit sad. When a man bumps into him and says “Excuse me”, he’s shocked because he has never experienced public decency in his life. Which is why he automatically loves the patriarchy. (besides the horses), he feels respected, and he decides to take that back to Barbieland. And even though what he did was wrong, I think the way the Barbies resolved the issue was really abusive. They made the Kens fight among themselves while they regained power. And I like how in the end, the Kens have more rights.
I saw a lot of negative review on here but they were all exactly the same, then I looked for normal reviews from people who each got something different out of it without angry rants and now I want to see it

Objectively, by story quality it was a very garbage movie. You can tell when someone takes a political message, tries to build a plot that supports it, and staples a beloved IP to it in order to sell tickets. What I find hilarious though, is that the movie unintentionally showed the nasty, bitter, and unhinged faults of feminism and misandry while giving young men (many of whom feel like they're being treated like Ken) a hero who is "literally me" as the meme goes. It's the most unintentionally based movie of all time.
I genuinely will never understand people who say they hated Barbie. I LOVED ITTTTT LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT WAS SO AMAZING AND LETS NOT EVEN TALK ABOUT THE COMEDYYYYYY. I never really laugh in movies but in the cinema I was at, everyone was giggling every two minutes. Loved it.

Not gonna lie, I would've liked a longer movie tryna explore a theme about a jaded teen reconnecting with their inner child via their femininity- It would've been so refreshing like: "Yeah we've been stereotyped to heck and back, but... as long I can have fun with it in my own way. I can still think the world is fucked up, but still feel glitter looks pretty on me too, and not feel ashamed of it,"
The teenager disliked Barbie and what she truly represented instead of condemning the people who made her feel that way about her. The mother was projecting her problems on Barbie in order to try and deal with her pain and reconnect with her fond memories of the past. Little Girls don't think about all the misogynistic things in the world, they love Barbie, they love playing all kinds of jobs and enjoy the freedom that comes with it. But all too often, as they grow up, all this is shattered by people who portray femininity as weak, evil or a joking matter.
Similarly to what happens to Barbie after being in the real world, her world is shattered. It takes away girls' fighting spirit, it tries to bring them down as if it is not a woman's place to be great. As Barbie became depressed she mentioned "maybe one of the more leadership orientated Barbies is going to snap out of it and do something about this" it shows how a girl's spirt can be broken and how she can believe that there is no way she is ever going to be able to change the world around her. But this film shows us: that is not true.
You must reconnect with your childhood self when you still saw things soberly, you must rid yourself of the hateful sentiments you were fed. Then, you will find your strength and you will find a team of those who stand behind you whenever you're confronted with misogyny by those who have not been able to find their true self or rid themselves of their hatred.
Yes I agree, I’m a female and used to think girly girls were pathetic, which is sad since I was only a child, but I’ve been slowly breaking that stereotype in my head. This movie definitely helped that :)

During those times i didnt know how to interact with my feminine side, my inner child. Since i thought growing up meant getting rid of my barbies and princessy dresses. Now i really crave that sense of fantasy and fun again, even if its a little bit through fsshion and mskeup.
I think a lot of people hating this movie for Ken’s treatment by the Barbies. I don’t think any of those haters were ever little girls who actually played with Barbie and put Ken on a leash and tied him to a tree. Ken was always awkward and a little useless.

I was born in the US and the daughter of an immigrant family. I watched my mom support my abusive father and his treatment for years. I grew up hating the Barbie dolls he gave to me because I hated not measuring up and obligated to be playing with them just because I was born and forced to be an average girl.
My mom worked tirelessly in a beauty salon to help pay the bills. When she finally had the money to buy out a salon, she was met with a lot of criticism from my dad and she also had a hard time speaking English so we were met with very many obstacles. Through consistency and determination my mother finally had enough money to leave my dad. When he couldn't hurt her he would hurt me and I would stand up for her whenever I could and he hated that. It wasn't until he left bruises on my face and back that I finally had enough evidence to not be forced to spend weekends with him.
It was only until a few years ago but I picked up my Barbie's again and show them the love and care I could never openly give to myself. This movie had me in pieces and would put me back together again.
Oppenheimer was also phenomenal and I can't believe I am alive and have the means and circumstances to have seen it on the 21st. Thank you to everyone who made these films possible and the people that show love for Barbie
I had a pretty quiet childhood and loved Barbie when I was young. But this movie has a lot more to give than its shiny gloss. It's a lot deeper than one might think: I cried too, and it opened my eyes on some realities. This is already so much more than most movies will ever do.

So what we are NOT going to do is spread a narrative that the animated movies were not substantial in storytelling and execution, especially the older ones. The Barbie cinematic universe is one that took decades to build in the minds of girls and young women who grew up with it. I have watched this live action one and it is FANTASTIC, but the message that it teaches can also be found in the Fairytopia series and other movies. I understand everyone is excited about Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's involvement in the movie and it's bringing in new fans of Barbie that little to no knowledge about her lore and storytelling, but discounting the predecessors of this movie, be it the more nuanced older films or the aesthetically-driven recent ones, is not something that should be done AT ALL. They were/are nuanced and you belittling the value of media created for children is literally hilarious considering this is one of the more influential factors of personality-formation in younger kids, whether or not they can fully understand the morals of the characters💀. It’s like saying the moral themes of Disney animated films from the early 2000s don’t matter because we were kids when they came out. But then I guess we wouldn’t say that because those were marketed towards boys and girls, and not just girls like Barbie was? Funny enough, this new Barbie movie is targeted at all age groups, including (you guessed it) children.
Also,it seems extremely tone deaf to say that “Be Yourself” is not a nuanced topic when we live in an age where people face discrimination just for reasons such as sexuality, gender, race, physical differences and even things as inconsequential as having their own opinions differ from the majority. And yes, Barbie did address issues of not being able-bodied in a world designed for the able-bodied(Fairytopia 1), having different opinions and doctrines (Mariposa), being of a different race (Mariposa 2), being an immigrant (Island Princess), evolving friendships that cause rifts (Diamond Castle), gender discrimination and restrictions in occupations (Musketeers), and much more (I cannot start writing this here, I just graduated I refuse to go back to writing thesis papers). And all this I recognized at the age of 12, watching with a male cousin that was half my age I was babysitting, when I finally unfiltered access to the internet and could dedicate hours a day to finding Barbie movies on CZcams split into 20 part videos. Granted, I am able to communicate these lessons better as a degree holder, but that does not discount the capability of my tweenage brain for being able to recognize these topics.
I’m not saying that this Barbie movie isn’t amazing, i absolutely LOVE it. It addresses a lot of issues head on and unfiltered unlike the animated ones that had to be delicate with the subject because it was media created solely for children and teenagers, however this review doesn’t get to discount all the foundation that has been laid by its predecessors, especially when he has not watched them (as seen in his comments on the creator who DID watch all the movies). People don’t get to come into already established fandoms, fail to gather context about previous material, and then dismiss said previous material in half of a sentence while creating a video review (again, it was a very fair and well-done review, I enjoyed it) of the new material. No cinematic universe deserves to be discounted because of the age group it serves.
While watching the movie, it made me think of how the subtleties of the story telling and character develop pleasantly distracted me from the fact that I was actually in this movie. Im literally him.

The movie was so insanely cohesive with everything from the dialogue, set design, music that moved with the story. I mean not to mention the call outs to 2001 A Space Odyssey and The Matrix there was so much thought put into it that it's hard to hate it because it's done so well that I don't think we've had a movie done quite like this in forever and yes it helps it's attached to a major IP.

My favorite point the movie made was that what men need to truly discover who they are is encouragement from other men. The idea that men need to dominate women to have an identity or that men need a girlfriend to be seen as worthy is poisoning not only women, but also cripples men emotionally and isolates men from eachother. It makes the men that should be brothers into threats, and it keeps men apart.

People find personal and social validation in having a romantic partner. Let's not pretend otherwise. And we don't live in a world, certainly not in the West, where men dominate women as a group. Both sexes have their issues but neither is really dominant overall.
The problem with feminism is that it refuses to allow there to be instances in which men are disadvantaged in society unless it is their own fault due to 'toxic masculinity' and they accept Feminism as their Lord (Lady) and Saviour. The idea they might find their own solutions is seen as dangerous and 'patriarchal'. There's nothing feminists loathe more on earth than men's rights activists, even very mild ones like Jordan Peterson. I think it's that the film is actually satirising, that extreme feminism/matriarchy is as ridiculous as the worst of the manosphere/patriarchy.

I went out of the cinema feeling hollow because this movie made me question everything. Like how Ken and Barbie question their existence, I questioned my sources if happiness in this life if these are forced upon me or does it really made me happy in the first place.
Omg I saw it yesterday and am feeling this hollowness today. For me it’s existential also. I remember the idealism of my youth, the joy of playing with Barbies, and then facing the reality of my life now as a middle aged woman. Not really sure who I am, since I spent way too much time trying not to age and trying to fit some sort of shallow ideal of femininity, only to realize now that it is actually perceived as weakness and inadequacy. All the “masculine” traits I need to be successful are in direct opposition to the identity I’ve created.

I don’t think Barbie is an indictment against men. It’s a criticism of patriarchy and how women and men all deserve their own sense of autonomous identity. There’s literally a scene where Gloria says there should be an ordinary Barbie, who could be a regular housewife trying to have a normal day. Barbie also apologizes to Ken for not treating him with respect and the Kens are allowed back into the government for equal representation. The ending has the Kens fight because it shows how patriarchal systems encourage men to compete and fight for dominance, which is very self-destructive. It’s not saying being feminine or masculine is bad, it’s saying simplified gender roles and standards are toxic. It’s not a perfect film, but I liked it.
Plus, at the end of the day, it’s a BARBIE movie. Don’t take it too seriously.
I also liked the detail about how this mattel intern says “I am a man but I have no power… am I a woman?” In regards to Barbies statement that “all men have power here” which is a generalization (also how Ken mentioned he “could” have been everything but then lists a lot of obstacles including his lack of a phd etc)

This movie had me thinking she legit deserves at least an Oscar nomination for this film. It was so beyond perfect. When they finally drop a line that roasts you, a guy who's mansplained ("pretend you've never seen the Godfather!"), you crack up and go "goddamn they got me, respect."
Loved it so much, it's my favorite modern movie in forever, it just gets it. If you've got no hate in your heart, this movie resonated with you and made you laugh at yourself at least once.

Honestly enjoyed the movie more then I thought I would. I think it's funny that for some reason people think the movies is bad because it's about hyper feminism and toxic masculinity, when I literally (me) think that's what the movie is making fun of and the actual message of the movie that you pointed out is "finding yourself".

I saw the movie Thursday night - a day before was officially released. The whole audience and including myself and husband dressed up. It was sold out. People were cheering , laughing and clapping in scenes. Honestly it was so much fun and Absolutely hilarious. I think the creativity was off the charts for the set. I love Margot and Ryan playing Barbie and Ken. The scenes in Santa Monica and Venice beach were done very well. I give it all 5 stars. I think Barbie and Ken should always stay together though. The outcome of the movie was finding out that you can be and become anything. Loved it! Great vid analysis btw. Subscribed!!
The theater I was in (we did Oppenheimer at 1130->Barbie at 3) popped off SOOO hard for this movie, I couldn't believe I could laugh as loudly as I did as much as I did and not have the crowd hate me.
It was the funniest, most correctly toned stuff I've ever seen in a theater. It wasn't anti-male at all, Act 1 is all an unspoken problematic matriarchy, they just don't say it out loud. It's genius.
We see both sides of the coin, get an amazing 3rd act, a tear-jeaking ending, and reminded that you need to be OK to be you. Chef's kiss from me, and the zingers. Goddamn, the zingers.

I watched it a few days ago, and the movie made me cry. I'm a dude who never played with Barbie dolls as a child, and I didn't expect this movie to be this good. The movie shows that both men and women have their own problems. Men always want women's approval. It's true, because we just want to be loved. That's why men work so hard under big pressure, to be approved by the person he loves. This goes for almost any men. Then, the movie shows that women actually understands men and appreciate them for their effort. And most importantly, they love men for what they are. This movie is an art. It's the piece that will unite humanity.

I loved the movie!!! Ryan was everything, perfect Ken hands down. This movie isn't for everyone for sure, but it had great messaging through the laughs. I did cry at points.
The fact that the Barbieland matriarchy didn't give equality to men, and relegated them to lower rungs of power in the end, went completely against the messages of the rest of the movie.

Thus far, I've observed there's a lot of abrasive backlash from opposers of the film-- which goes to prove the direct problem of the underlying message behind Barbie. But perhaps one of the most insightful moments I took away from this film, was how it taught more about the experience of the evolution of humanity's ideas.

I think without having seen it yet that the Barbie movie wins by being super creative with a really boring source material. The idea of making a Barbie movie with two Hollywood Superstars sounds so absurd on paper but seems to work so well on film because of all the details put into the product. It's something fresh and exciting, a great mixture of different stuff. That's actually very smart. Many movies are the copy of the copy and the current environement encourages remakes, sequels and safe bets instead of creativity. Okay, looking for creativy in the absolute mainstream may be the wrong place but when it happens, it hopefully enables other filmmakers to create new and exciting material (even out of already existing stories) instead of the same same again and again.

Never do that! i repeat: Never do that ever again! I was totally wrong about the Barbie movie. It is trash² but it would also have been trash without its extreme agenda of feminism thrown into the audience's face. It has many obvious flaws.
On the surface it really looked like Hollywood finally had made a creative, clever, fun movie instead of the same-same drivel again and again! But I was so wrong because I got deceived by the trailer. It was also my own fault, had I read some reviews before it, I could have known what is really going on. But I don't regret watching it because it's a lesson learned and boy is it a lesson learned.

The film can't end neutral because Barbie land never been the perfect world, but the dream world where gender roles are swapped. So, at the end Kens have basically the same rights as Barbies, they can live for them selves and not just for Barbies, BUT they are still relegated in second position. I saw in that a criticism to people who still say that Femminism is now obsolete because women already have all the rights... Sure, more or less like Kens in the end of the film, theoretically yes but actually no XD
The whole point of the kens is to show how women are treated in the real world. I think the ending was supposed to show that we still have a long way until we are all equal in society
That was meant to parallel the scene between Gloria and her boss who basically just gave her a little bit more of power just as long as her ideas were profitable, she didn’t magically become a higher up, neither the boss changed besides being a bit more flexible

Misandry? Did you even watch the movie? The movie dissects gender as a whole, and how all gender roles play into life. I’m also not too surprised by the movie as it was directed by Greta Gerwig. Greta’s previous films (Lady Bird, Frances Ha, etc.) are all social commentary art pieces. When people like you make comments like these, it just proves how shallow minded you are.
Also, characters like Gloria do not end up magically having a higher up position in the company and her boss doesn’t change at all besides giving her just a bit more of power which parallels a bit with barbie president and kens that are starting to have a bit more of power in barbie world… is basically mirroring something there

You encapsulated many of the thoughts and feelings I had when I watched it. It’s a fantastic movie. I’m sure it’ll become a cult classic. Btw, I did the double feature, and watched Oppenheimer a couple hours after. And they are very complimentary.

I enjoyed Barbie so much. The rollercoaster of emotions that it inspired in me, from laughing to crying. It was simply wonderful
I heard the movie was deeper than expected and better than you'd think. So I went to see it and.... liked it. Actually, quite a bit. But I still wasn't sure if it deserved the accolades it was getting. But then it kind of sunk in over a few days and I realized it's a near-perfect film and is one of the best movies made in quite a while. And not only is it a good movie, but a socially important one. It rekindles a much-needed look at stereotypes and expectations and does it in a very non-confrontational way. And the best thing about it? Even though it's non-confrontational and respectful, ultra-conservatives who can only view things through political lenses are apoplectic over it thinking it's a direct attack on everything they hold dear (which is very sad).
Glad to see a positive video promoting this movie, it deserves to make $1 billion. Margot Robbie needs a billion dollar hit!

I think people who don't understand this movie are either not millennials or never played with barbies. When I played as a child; ken was always sidelined. Not because I was anti-men because I wanted a female to get all the spotlight being from a South Asian country where men received all the glory.
Barbie was beautiful but I never compared myself to her. It's just a toy.

Went to watch it yesterday with the girlfriend and some friends. We had a really good time. Ryan Gosling was really funny. The attention to details was insane. They are toys and act like it. Great! The message was sometimes a little bit on the nose (there's literally a speech at some point), but really subtle at other times. Particularly, I like how the Ken in Barbie World have the struggles of the women in the Real World and it's really interesting how they play with those idea. It works really great and I thought it was very clever. Overall they managed to handle the minefield that could have been Barbie very well and we had a great time. I'm amused to see that a lot of people (men mostly) are confused by the movie. Last night on Google the ratings we're very split, with people rating either 5 or 1, with an average of 2.6 (quite split as you can see!). A lot of people went there expecting a kids movie (have they not see the previews??) and were not ready to receive the feminist message. The backlash on Fox News, the right and in the ''masculinity'' circles will be strong for sure... Anyway, now we're out to see Oppenheimer tonight on IMAX. Should be Kenough for sure.

I haven't seen it yet, but one of the negative reviews that I saw said that the movie was pretty negative about men overall though. That the movie had no positive representations of men and that even though Ken goes on a journey to become a person, he ends up basically in the same place: under Barbie's heel. Furthermore, when they get back to Barbieland, Kens are denied any authority whatsoever until women have more power in the real world. It sounds like the movie's answer to sexism and misogyny is for the Barbies to treat Kens the way that women have been historically treated in this world. That doesn't sound like a positive message to me. There should be mutual respect, not dominance by any gender.

It's like our Real World but reversed where women mainly hold the power and the men are just there (therefore they're just Ken's lol). What I like about the ending, which I'm sure a lot of people have missed, is that the Ken's can finally have a role in the parliamentary, although they gotta start small and slow, but it's still an improvement, kinda like how women gotta fight for their place in society (like having the right to vote, run in election, have jobs etc.). "Men rule the world" is just not true anymore. Loads of western countries had many female queens and presidents, and here in europe more women then men are going into politics.

The movie went out of its way to portray this world as patriarchal and misogynist to excuse the immoral acts the women did in the movie to keep their matriarchy.
But yes, i think the message ken learned that he doesn't have to live his life just trying to make womens lifes better, is a message lots of young men, including me needed to hear. I've grown up believing my worth is in protecting and providing for women, and it's driving my self-worth into the ground realizing women today don't even want that.
@@DrTheRich The movie IS supposed to be over the top and exaggerated, and a lot of the time, movies and media use exaggeration and fiction as a storytelling ploy to communicate messages. I can also imagine that it's part of the uncanny vibe that it was going for, and a highlight to the contrast between the matriarchy and patriarchy (Barbieland and the real world). We HAVE progressed a ton as a society and I am so thankful for that because I can do things that weren't seen as "okay" or "appropriate" for me to do as a woman like before, but the existence of female leaders where you live doesn't automatically imply that gender-based prejudice and bigotry in other views of life just don't exist.

The final few scenes of Ruth walking with Barbie in discussion of her "ending" is so moving and I think is the part with the most meaning, not just for women, but as a projection of humanity. There is no ending for Barbie, and there never has been. She is an idea and a figure created for the basis of being an item that girl's could play with and project their imaginations onto, rather than playing INTO a role (like being a mother through the babydolls girls played with in the beginning of the movie). As Ruth stated, ideas never die, humans do, but it's the ideas that humans created that pushes and challenges evolution in a never-ending dance. Consumerism birthed a "sex-sells" culture, and therefore, beauty standards. Patriarchy birthed toxic masculinity, which in turn, creates stigmatization on both male and females and imbalance of leadership. Emotions are shunned because its "too complicated" when shared. These are all human ideas that we have to continue to live through, and the ideas that are being projected to figures like Barbies and, by extension, little girls. If you think about it, no toy targeted for little boys have as much societal projection and controversy as those for girls. Barbie the film, of course, hits harder to watch as a woman especially through blatant relatability in dialogue, like in America Ferrera's monologue. We were called out, but it felt good, and we felt SEEN. It's a film more for than kids or just women. Everyone can take something away from this film, and how we project the frequent problems on society on ourselves.

as a woman, i don’t see it that way. i think he was talking about the male perspective just to show men that the movie had a good message for men and wasn’t just “feminist propaganda.” he even talked about sexism as well. ur kinda reaching ngl but no hate. also the ryan gosling thing will make more sense to you if you look at his channel :)

Absolutely loved the movie. Also when barbie is escaping and meets Ruth for the first time, it reminded me of the Oracle, from the Matrix.
Watched this movie yesterday and it was one of the best movies i ever watched and the story is beautiful the emotional scenes the quirkiness and one of my fav characters are BARBIE AND KEN cuz they are the PERFECT barbie dolls :)

I honestly feel like I got a mostly different message than other watchers. Of course I got the point of being yourself and being Kenough, but to me it was just about life. Being human is beautiful and full of messy and wonderful opportunities. Barbie gave up a life with everything she could ever want in exchange for a very chaotic and ever changing world. It's a beautiful message about impermanence and how things constantly change, and some of that change can be up to you. I hope more people also got this message because it is so profound and can be easily lost in all the pink.
Bro I saw it and at the “I’m Just Ken” musical scene the girl next to me (who was about 16) was absolutely bawling her eyes out. At the final scene as well
Eh, 6/10 at best, this movie really thought it was doing something, but it is about 10-15 years behind the trends on feminism. They could not even wait 30 minutes to piviot the plot back to men... And ended with the entire thing being a joke about gentalia is just so lame
Misandry the movie, speeches about standing up to ''The Patriarchy'', while ignoring the fact the dolls are made in a factory ,in a country that if a Woman should protest saiid ruling CCP patriarchy, would be sent to a ''re education centre'' or disappeared ,but thats feminism for you !

I’ll be honest, I think Ken’s storyline is underrated. He always was an accessory for Barbie, no more important then her clothes, which makes the scenes in the real world not only hilarious, but also a bit sad. When a man bumps into him and says “Excuse me”, he’s shocked because he has never experienced public decency in his life. Which is why he automatically loves the patriarchy. (besides the horses), he feels respected, and he decides to take that back to Barbieland. And even though what he did was wrong, I think the way the Barbies resolved the issue was really abusive. They made the Kens fight among themselves while they regained power. And I like how in the end, the Kens have more rights.
I saw a lot of negative review on here but they were all exactly the same, then I looked for normal reviews from people who each got something different out of it without angry rants and now I want to see it
