  • Upon watching season 2 of Euphoria it dawned on me that there are a lot of movie references in this show, but also references to musicvideos, popular series, TV shows and art. It made me wonder: Is Euphoria simply copying all these elements, or is there a hidden meaning behind it all? In this Video Essay I am analyzing and explaining the ideas behind these forms of symbolism to see how Euphoria is referring to popular culture. So let's find out why Good Artists copy and Great artists steal...

    Euphoria is a tv show told from a point of view of a teenager, so it's only natural for it to use popcultural reference and inter-textuality.

      For me, she gave me much more Persephone vibes. Also Cassie and Nate are kind of Persephone and Hades....Cassie has received significantly more hatred than Nate for something that he started (not defending Cassie at all, it's just that he initiated this). Similarly, even though Hades decided people's punishments, Persephone had the job of handing them out hence becoming the face of it. There’s a parallel between the Howard sisters when Lexi goes hides the knives in the bushes and when she stands up she’s in a frame of pine trees and greenery. It parallels with the scene with Cassie imagines herself at her vanity surrounded by pink roses and flowers. Contrasts how Lexi sees herself as the supporting role because she doesn’t stand out while Cassie sees herself as the most beautiful and pure, never in the wrong. Cassie made it up in her head to perceive herself in that way so that the guilt from betraying Maddy doesn’t push down on her.

    One of the greatest criticism this show receives is that it isn't realistic. But, what people forget is that the story is essentially being told through rue's stream of consciousness. She is the definition of an unreliable narrator. Moreover, she's a teenager grappling with intense emotions. Think of yourself as teenager- unimportant and trivial events weigh heavier on you. Love and friendship feel like life or death issues. The use of this otherworldly, colourful aesthetic is kind of perfect because the show is depicting Rue's imaginative retelling of these people's lives. It's so much more about how the character's feelings rather than their actual struggles themselves. It's about how teenagers viewed their lives, themselves, and their emotions.

    • @DuCinema1

      Absolutely spot on, the stream of consciousness aspect really fits the themes

    • @attenberg
      @attenberg Před 2 lety +5

      Rue cannot be the narrator, as she doesn’t know of all stories and subplots. Either she can narrate or she doesn’t. Half of the scenes don’t even include her or narration at all.
      They don’t have a stylistic approach to their story. They just let it happen and then pretend.

    • @aliceinnude
      @aliceinnude Před 2 lety +7

      @@attenberg that's why she is an unreliable narrator. Rue says at one point that when she's high she thinks she's psychic. She thinks she knows everything and that's very common of teenagers. There's the possibility a lot of the things shown are based on assumptions, or even rumors. All the friends are connected so it's easy to believe one friend was told something then told another friend and the stories got around that way.

    I think that there is a reference to My So Called Life in the way that Jules is a bit of a Rayanne Graff for Rue, a new person that she becomes fascinated with and chooses to have a relationship with as she grows out of her friendship with her childhood best friend Lexi (similar to how Angela 'grows out' of her friendship with Sharon). But I like the way that in Euphoria it is shown more gradually and there is not a big argument or rupture, and ultimately I think Rue realises that it is ok for friendships to change and evolve and she has space in her life for Lexi even if they are no longer in the same dynamic they would have had when they were younger.
    And we obviously have the direct reference to MSCL when Gia is watching it in her room which I think is a cute moment!
    And the scenes when they are cycling home through suburbia also give me MSCL vibes!

    Whoever sets up the scenes in this show must love Renee Magritte. You see the artwork "The Lovers" as one of the famous recreated scenes between Rue and Jules, and in the most recent episode (S2E7), you see "Not to be Reproduced", which is er, reproduced with Nate.

    Theory is, the scenes based on art. Frida as the main inspiration for a few. The flower sequence is in one of her artworks. Especially since Frida dealt with quite the similar story. Sort of stealing a man from some one else and ending up in heart ache. Lexi was another reference, also to the girl with the pearl earring.

      In a moment between Pelle and Dani, when he asks if she feels “held by him,” it's a key moment to Dani's realization. The last image of Christian being burned in the house and Dani smiling is visually showing one the at-times violent removal one must do with someone in order to find peace with herself. Thats the symbolism I thought was very accurate. But plainly looking at the whole movie its a horror shit show indeed haha

      I thought that the end of midsommar showed how easy it is for a cult to use the pain and instability of another to brainwash them and make them completely dependent on them, whilst also having them believe that they are completely in control of their decision.
      In essence, that is the exact same thing that has happened to Cassie.
      I’ve seen a lot of people talk about midsommar and most will say that the movie itself brainwashed you. With the swelling music, colourful scenes and Danny’s smile, it has tricked you into thinking what happened is a good thing.

    You forget the Rue/Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 4th wall reference which is typically used with Rue as a mechanical to remind the audience that she may be lucid, but she is indeed present; way more than she lets on, despite the drug use. She only does it to react to something and mostly it’s through expression, versus dialogue. I always find it interesting considering the theories regarding her narration, and specifically how that could be looked at as breaking the fourth wall, but they do it through different mediums to expound on feeling, and to provide emotional context. I was absolutely blown away by season 1.
    I am ten years in recovery and I don’t believe this show glorifies drug use, if anything it’s pretty accurate how awful addiction is.
    However, I don’t find any of the characters aside from Roo and her dealer very interesting (I thought She deserved an award she is absolutely phenomenal) They are flushed out but they’re all incredibly narcissistic, & Jules is portrayed like this perfect human whom everyone instantly loves and I just see a rich girl who hasn’t really earned how people regard her & leaves many broken in her wake.
    To your point though, it is for me, a visual delight and I really enjoyed watching you break that down. I also love that the music is almost like a character and is so eclectic (a bit like my taste in music) but it’s so much louder than the dialogue so I am constantly moving my volume throughout an episode.

    I loved Rocketman. I read some interviews, and they acknowledged the how inaccurate some events depicted were, but they weren't aiming for Realism- if you watched the movie they made that clear, instead they were capturing memories of experiences.

      exactly! Very well described. The creators of euphoria had a very similar mindset it seems!

    I think the first episode has a reference to the french movie “a portrait of a lady on fire”.(a movie about a relationship between two women in the 1800’s, worth a watch)
    In the scene that jules sees rue smoking a joint in the campfire, the close ups on their faces really resemble the style of that movie!

    • @DuCinema1
      @DuCinema1  Před 2 lety

      woww that could definitely be the case. Phenomenal movie too!

    aside from the montage of rue and jules in various portryals of relationships i didnt pick up almost any reference (mi not big into film stuff) so when we saw the opening shot of nate with the sink, i still think it did an amazing job portraying his aggressiveness despite not knowing what the shot is based off of- i think if a piece of media is able to use pop culture references but you can still understand the media without the reference then you have made something that truly capture a wider audience (even for the montage scene despite those being very iconic scenes (obciously why they were chosen) you can still tell that its trying to portray the love between them- also how they (meaning the titanic and brokeback moments) convey the future tradgey of their relationship)

    i miss the teen feeling and pop culture references of s01 tho
    s02 is too much retro and dramatic, it fits rue's arch but the fun is gone imo (kat and jules were rlly fun to watch but the vibes are missing this season)

    Identify with the character Cassie. I also identify with rue. I can also identify with Maddie. Luckily when I was a teenager particularly my high school years were in 1997-2001. I can personally attest to the sex and drug use and bisexuality. The parties the danger in my life that I experienced during those years. Sam Levinson and I are the same age. Also like Sam I was an addict. I've been sober for 15 years myself and this is why I absolutely love how even though this series can be a little over the top and overly dramatic, I can identify with it as a whole.

    I started watching Euphoria in 2020 (before it was popular) I was so tired and I needed some movie to watch. I saw video with 10 best movies (serials) and I choose Euphoria for no reason. When I watched it for the first time I was like „wtf is this " because Euphoria gives me some special feeling and I NEVER saw something that full of feelings and perfection. Now people are like: „Did u see Euphoria?” and I am always like: „yeah..." and inside I'm really happy that I was between people who watched it at time when nobody knows Euphoria. I literally waited for every next episode. Euphoria is my drug! 🔮

    While there's no doubt post editing, a lot of the colour tones come from the fact its shot in Kodak Ektachrome. It really gives it a distinct look to any other modern show. I love how they use music to express the existential and psychological states of the characters. To me the whole show is a grand study of emotions. Good video.

    I don't know anything about writing or directing but I feel like Sam Levinson didn't write well but he did direct well. Like plot lines were often forgotten about and but the cinematography was great. The ideas were great though.
