I saw it in theaters and I’ve got to say the underwater scenes were the most immersive scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie
Agreed, ever
In 3D it was amazing
Yep
fr wtf, shit was so realistic and clearer than my eyesight jesus
They definitely were, the water caustics were incredible
James Cameron is a legend. Him and his team revolutionized the use of CG in cinema.
More than once!
Yet still suck at storyline’s
@@bayly1977
Can't have it unfortunately. You win some and lose some.
@brandovlogs plot can be what it’s about, just not necessarily. I actually think the plot isn’t that bad in avatar or avatar 2 either though.
@brandovlogs oh yeah plot isn’t relevant hey. Sure look at the best movies all all time, all action and visuals……shawshank redemptions, the usual suspects, pulp fiction, the god father, the shining, eternal sunshine of a spotless mind, silence of the lambs. 😂 stfu you clown
Watching this movie in imax 3D was truly unreal. It really felt like you were there on a real planet under real water with these characters
Same. It was truely an experience.
Is the 3D actually done well? I've seen 3D movies, and it looked horribly done back then.
Also, I think even the original Avatar was kinda bad in 3D, too.
@@danielawesome36 yes the 3D is great. With most films converted to 3D it’s a gimmick and doesn’t look very good. But James Cameron specifically frames his shots to be fully appreciated in 3D. It’s all in service of the characters. Nothing is a gimmick. I highly recommend seeing it in 3D. Especially when you’re underwater with the sea creatures you truly feel there on Pandora
I can confirm, seeing avatar 2 in a imax 3d cinema is truly from a different planet, at some point (opening scene in the forest) I kind of got motion sick like in VR games
Same! I saw it in IMAX 3D and in 3D 4DX!
This movie doesn’t feel like 3 hours because it’s so immersive. I was always so captivated by the performances, especially from the general, every scene he was in, I was always so invested. James Cameron knows what he’s doing.
Oh it definitely felt like 3 hours, having to sit through the mind numbing storyline was awful. The CGI and art teams absolutely knocked it out of the park, but holy shit the actual writing was terrible.
@@battleoid2411 _something something plot is simple therefore it's bad_
@@manuelquiero it wasnt simple, it was stupid. A simple plot is fine, hell I enjoyed watching the first avatar because it was a great looking movie with a pretty basic story that was still decent. Avatar 2 is just plain terrible.
@@battleoid2411 The visual experience was so immersive it definitely didn't feel like 3 hours to me. I didn't pay attention to the story much, but to be fair I was high
@@CK-kd5pn I mean, that illustrates my point exactly lol. You had to be high to enjoy it
After working on 3D animation as a hobby for years I learnt how to identify and recognize many 3D and VFX techniques on animation and movies, always taking away my immersion to the media, but watching this movie I could never notice anything out of place, everything is so well done and it really feels like you're watching something real, everything makes sense visually and feels natural
Man I’m the same way, I had to rewatch avatar in theaters and it was worth every penny. The closer you look the more you see but it just…feels real. It’s such an immersive experience,
Same, and all that because i watched CorridorCrew, am not even a VFX guy 😂
There was a great detail that I noticed in the film that isn't particularly impressive in CG but it really stood out to me. Their hair is done with physics sims I assume but there's a moment where one of the character's hair covers his face, he then shakes his head to get the hair out of his eyes. I just think it's really lovely because it shows an attention to detail in little subtle flourishes that make it more immersive, as opposed to just redoing the physics sim to make sure the hair stays out of his face
I think the only thing in the movie that kind of looked like CGI, and took me a bit out of it, was the navii babies. They looked fake. There was something about their faces that looked too cartoonish.
@@Koff33y I agree, but remember these are aliens. They're humanoid, not human. They have many different facial features compared to people so some things might look out of place, or 'cartoonish', as you say.
James Cameron is one of a kind. Not only is he a great filmmaker and storyteller but he has something extremely rare, innovator mentality. Basically “it doesn’t exist yet, then let’s make it.” Truly an icon.
Great filmmaker and technical innovator? Yeah.
Great storyteller? Nah.
@@gaylord_focker I’d say he’s at least above average by today’s standards.
@@gaylord_focker really? Why do you believe so? No hate. Generally curious
@@gaylord_focker If you want to have a movie that appeals to the largest possible audience, you kinda gotta stick to tried and true plot formats. The movie was gorgeous. I did not want the underwater scenes to end. I actually went a second time. People, go experience this in theaters please. It really is an experience.

As a painter myself, I know how intimidating or challenging water can be to replicate. I imagine its the same deal for the CGI world, and when I watched this I was actually blown away by how good the water looked. I actually can't believe they finally solved how to animate water.
water is simulated not animated! :)
@@Fizzbuzzbizzfuzz2 and it's still pretty intimidating... Good fluid simulations are pretty computationally heavy.
It is the first that is actually real looking.
There is a ton of propriatory tech in there that studios will struggle to recreate.
Weta in this regard is a titan. They can do the stuff Disney/Pixar does, where basically they have the money and time to throw at problems in a way no other post production studio in the world can.
This is why they are revolutionary. The film studios pay them to be so. They dont for the majority.
@@Fizzbuzzbizzfuzz2why cant you animate water?
@@zzzzzz6269 if you want it to look real, animating it would be WAY too complicated.
Think about how a wave bumps into the side of it's container and bounces back, creating new shapes and interacting with other waves.
Or how any object moving in the water will generate new waves and interact with old ones. Water will stick to the object too.
You can art direct the simulation, but it's not quite the same concept as traditional animation.
Ocean waves are most often simulated with Fast Fourier Transform algorithm (FFT)
The ending with the background music and Jake opening his eyes gave me shivers. Thanks for the informative video.
So awesome to hear 🙏🙏
He did it again, 14 years later I got absolutely blown away by the scope and visuals of the world of Pandora once more!
Oh wow it really has been 14 years…that explains why they made kiri 14
I love that they’re more accurately calling this “performance capture” now since it’s so much more than just motion.
Yep it's a good description. Although they called it that 13 years ago too. And both Cameron and Andy Serkis lied a lot about the whole thing as well so y'know, swings and roundabouts in terms of the semantics!
Agree, especially for Zoe!
I saw Avatar in 4D yesterday (watching 3d with moving chairs, droplets, smoke, and air). I almost cried multiple times because of the flawless cinematography and immersion. Truly an unforgettable experience.
Doesn't the "4D" reduce the immersion? Because everytime your chair moves, or water flies into your face, you are reminded that you're just in a cinema?
@@ggdk2865 Not really. It's all timed so amazingly with this movie, that it made it feel more real. they also had smoke and bubbles to really make it seem like we were in the film with the characters
I like Human Boat scene
Not only can the cameraman run really fast but the camera man can hold his breath long really really good for those intense scenes of the actor trying to get oxygen, perfect evolution of the cameraman.
The camera man really *blew it out of the water*.
The main reason I wanted to see Avatar 2 was because of the visuals. The water scenes wear easy the best part because its just so beautiful and realistic. The VFX team and the motion capture team and whoever else was involved in this part deserve so much praise.

Paid $50 to see this in imax 3d with my girl, and I never thought I would be able to justify that... I’d pay $200 to see it again if I had to. Gonna go again this weekend
50$ for just two Imax 3D tickets? Damn, Cinema in the U.S. is for sure overpriced. I paid 30€ for two tickets in Austria, Europe and those were the most expensive cinema tickets i ever bought. 1$ has pretty much the same worth as 1€. I would never pay 25€ just to see a movie one time. Not even for something as visually amazing as Avatar.
Yeah it’s better to be poor in Europe
“Is water wet?” “Is water real?…”
While the water scenes in Avatar 2 are undoubtedly gorgeous and incredible, I do want to say how amazed I was when I found out the water scene in Avatar 1 WASN’T done in water. Obviously if you compare them side to side you’ll notice differences, but I’ve seen the first movie a few times now and I honestly would’ve never noticed. Incredible acting to pull that off, too.
SAME. I thought the water in that scene looks realistic enough until I watched Avatar 2.
James Cameron is just on a fliting OTHER LEVEL, when the man says he will blow your mind............he ALWAYS DELIVER, this is why he take his damn time crafting the best possible experience, no matter how long it takes, always looking ahead in time, More artist should learn from Cameron. The Water in this film is just unreal of how REAL IT FELT.
Why so blue? You're not in Kansas anymore, you're on Pandora! This is The Way Of Water. Avatar: The Way Of Water is meant to be experienced in the theater no matter the cost and the hype. We all know James Cameron outdid himself again after the original Avatar 13 years ago. Another great video essay!
"I'll be nice. once. then i wont" hahah. Thanks a lot man 🙏
There was a few chuckles at that line in the theater here in Kansas 😂
nah ill watch it in my comfy home
This guy Cameron just keeps breaking the mold of what cinema making is. He keeps coming out with new and exciting ways to film and always makes them look so real you feel like you're there in that world. Remember when thousands of people had that Avatar Depression after watching the first film? They literally hated when the movie ended and they had to go back to the world we live in and made them depressed. That is how movie making should be.
Just watched it and I have to say it was absolute fantastic. The depictions of Polynesian/ Māori tribal people in reference to those water beings is what stood out to me the most. Also the emotions shown by the actors when they had the death scene actually brought tears to my eyes. What else can i say but this movie is worth every minute of it, definitely waiting on the 3rd sequel in future
This is MIND BLOWING. Can't believe Cameron was able to pull it off a second time, with verrrrrry significant improvements to the first.
James Cameron, as well respected as he is, will be regarded even more highly a century from now I think. Once the dust settles, once the generation of salty/jealous haters dies out, his legacy will march on. What he does, the effort and dedication he shows to creating these experiences, is unrivalled. The guy’s a film-making genius.
_Once the dust settles_
that would happen once Twitter goes offline for good.
The guy’s a film-making genius.
So criticizing him and/or his work just because he put much effort in it is salty/jealous hating? Lmao
@@gaylord_focker Criticising someone JUST for putting lots of effort into a project is, I’d say, most certainly a (weird) form of hating. Surely reserving judgement until the film is released and viewed is the way to go. Otherwise it’s blind criticism of someone’s strong work ethic. Very bizarre.
The king of the box office did it again.
This movie deserves every award, every milestone, and every bit of praise for its groundbreaking cinematography, performance capture, and animation!
I was genuinely blown away by how utterly incredible the water was rendered throughout the movie. Everything felt so fluid and alive.
And i love when great movie producers pushes the boundaries of whats possible with new, self made software, opening up near endless possibilities.
The caustics in the underwater scenes are really beautiful and realistic.
But it is also hard to render caustics.
Not at WetaFX it isn't.
5:46 Now let’s see Paul Allen’s reaction.
I had the chance to watch this masterpiece on 3D, and the only thing I can say that it was so immersive, I really felt like I was there to witness everything. Every details fills my field of views.
10:18 "WETA managed to create an AI that is able to generate unique water oparitcles that definitely make things look... [wetter]"... you punny man xD
hahahah
WETA are the real geniuses here. @Du Cinema forgot to mention that on the ipad that Cameron had it had rough renderings of character skins instantly as is seen in one from in this video and he could also change digital light sources without moving big light rigs. Peter Jackson is the genius behind WETA innovations. Spielberg used the ipad and studios and shot Tin Tin in six weeks. Jackson used it for all of LOTR too
working on one of these movies as an actor sounds like a crazy life experience
The miracle of turning water into water.
Saw it last night and loved it. My only gripe was the switch between frame rates. This was something very obvious to me as to my perspective the frame rate dropped so many times throughout the film it felt like claymation. The person I saw it with, who is a non gamer and unaware of framerates and picture quality differences, said it was buttery smooth for them the whole time, but I definetly definetly noticed it switching back and forth.
It looked like a video game cutscene
Me too. It would even inexplicably switch to 48 for literally one second and then back to 24 during some sequences. I must admit tho, 48 looked so beautiful underwater.
that's a hell of an eye trev, good on ya.
@@_antom_ dont think there is any 24 Antom, 48 n 60
Same here, I thought way more people would notice. The framerate switching kept throwing me out of the experience because I noticed it every single time it switched, even when I was actively trying to ignore it. And damn did it switch often. I *really* hope movies don't continue doing this and just settle for one rate for the whole movie. I had no problems with the Hobbit looking so smooth because when it doesn't switch, I just get used to it really quickly.

I still remember how cool, impressive and outstanding T2 was, I never forgot the reaction of the crowd around me.

Will be a long wait to see those 3 remain Avatar movies... but will worth, that's for sure.
James Cameron is a freaking legend any which way you look at it. We are blessed to live in a time where we get to witness his creativity first hand.
After seeing it in 3D in theater I was allready pretty sure they changed frame rates between scences because the action scenes had kind of a "cut scene" vibe to me that is often associated with 48-60 fps. I thought I was imagining things but I am happy I got it right :) Thanks for the great breakdown!
Edit: I also find it facinating what they did to the facial skin (I think its suburface scattering) interaction with light underwater. They perfectly nailed how faces look smoother underwater (e.g. 10:50 in the video). Does this effect result from the refractive index of skin and water beeing fairly close to each other (in compairson to skin and air?). Never really thought about that until now?
Everything about this movie is just ... Spectacular 🥰
I absolutely loved this masterpiece of a movie. So well done with so many emotions. It deserves all of the hype and credit, and I honestly hope it surpasses the original to become the highest grossing film ever, because it deserves it.

4D is such a funny marketing name. And what is 5D? With smells? And with temperature changes it's 6D?
While the story/screenplay probably won't garner any awards Way of Water's visuals melted my brain. Easily the most stunning film I've ever seen after the first Avatar, which I've watched at least once a year over the past 13 years. It would be an absolute travesty if this film doesn't win an Oscar for best FX.
Outstanding breakdown and I can't wait to watch for a 3rd time when it's eventually available on home video.
OH SO THE FRAMES WERE CHANGING! While I was in the theatre I felt like some scenes (The faster ones) had a faster FPS while some others were shot on 24FPS, I asked my sister and she said she didn't notice it. Wild
Also the rest of this work was incredible, I couldn't find any flaws on the VFX!
This was so beautifully presented and it really puts into perspective how much work has gone into the production of this film. I literally had tears in my eyes. Thank you for sharing!
Watching it in 4DX was truly stunning. If you got the chance to experience it in a near theatre where you live, I would recommend it over standard 3D or IMAX.
I think it's funny that you mentioned that no one will notice the motion grading does so far besides obvious plot and character stuff that's the number one complaint that everyone has about the film is how much the variable frame rate confuses them and hurts their eyes.
Same, that was the first thing that i noticed and it really made the movie less emersive. It just felt like something went wrong in rendering.
When you realise James Cameron was once a truck driver, yet he was able to develop new filming technology like a MIT engineer and explores the cinematic experience like Socrates,.
It was never him alone though.
I really hope The Way of Water is nominated for Oscars. Best Director, Best Picture would definitely be up there. I'm sure there are more categories but I'm not too familiar with the Academy.
The awards were in march my dude
It's hard to appreciate how good it looks if you haven't seen it in a true imax theatre, watching clips of the movie now on youtube it doesn't look that impressive but in person this was the most beautiful movie I have ever seen.

the music did not have to go that hard, but I'm glad it did.
The HFR 3D for this was so amazing. I was a little speechless after the movie.
This takes the "holdin your breath as long as the main character" to a next level.
Besides the issue with bubbles, I think the overriding problem is that having a mouthpiece will get in the way of face acting.
I think that crew could use rebreather or dual-hose systems, though. At the very least, the safety specialists that watch out for problems and rescue the actors who black out, ought to have long-duration rebreathers.
my first thought also was, why didn't the crew use rebreathers? As for the actors rebreathers would be bad, because you move differently if you have to conserve oxygen. also they give you different aerodynamics and different mass and center of gravity.
I was so engrossed I didn’t realize how sore my ass was after 3:12. That’s a compliment.

I gotta say my biggest criticism of the film was the "motion grading", I kept noticing the change in framerate and it killed me. It was like playing a video game where there was gameplay and cinematic cutscenes. It made the movie feel inconsistent but I didn't watch it in 3d so maybe that helps.
Cameron himself said that there is absolutely no benefit to HFR for film, except when used for 3D (3D divides the frame rate in half for each eye). That said, I saw it in IMAX 3D HFR, and some frame-rate changes really stood out to me as well, feeling soap-opera-y.
