Here in America, we're so use to the Coca-Cola version of Santa and none of any of the lore that's around Santa. The Krampus stuff angers some people, but it's part of the St. Nicholas story.

Hi Amy, good to see you enjoying these amazing traditions. Perhaps I can give a bit of historical background, even though I’m coming from a Frisian point of view. In the old days our ancestors always told stories about the darkest time of the year. The great night wolf Fenrir would roam the lands, and the creatures of darkness would roam the forests freely. Lonely homesteads and late night travelers would often fall victim to large packs of wolves, and it was an altogether scary time. But with the passing of midwinter, Woden/Odin would travel the lands with an army of undead warriors and they would hunt the creatures of darkness away. They called this “The wild hunt” and people would light large bonfires in order to help Woden/Odin to bring us the new light of a new year. People would also bless each other with sweets and bread or cake which was shaped like the old runes, which were used as signs of good fortune. These traditions changed with the coming of Christianity, but they never truly died out. Woden/Odin became Saint Nick, or Saint Peter depending on the region. The undead wild hunt were rebranded as either Swiss guard soldiers known as Black Peters, or demonic helpers which are akin to Krampus. The runic shaped candies and sweetbreads became Latin letters of Chocolate or dough. But even after almost 1500 years of Christianity Europe, there are still people who know what this originally was all about!

This was so interesting that I literally went and did as much research on the legend in further detail so I had more information about the traditions of Krampus. They won't celebrate on the 6th December because that is known as St. Nicholas Day.

Sry but that's not correct...this is a tradition being lived all over Austria (except Vienna). You find those shows in almost every small village...and yes...I am Austrian ;-)

But most of them are held between December1 and December5. I was in Salzburg, Austria, but there are festivals all over Austria, Germany, Czech Republic and other countries, too. 🖤🖤🖤

I do intend on coming back to the States one day, too many haunted places I didn't get to visit when I was there. I also have intention of doing a haunted Australia series when I get back home, too.
