I also use molasses a lot and when my local store has sales i get extra. I put it in so many things however years ago I found a recipe for my stir fry for a soy less soy sauce and since most of the ingredients are already in my stir fry i just add the molasses. This is the recipe--¼ cup vegetable broth
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
1 ½ cups water
1 tbsp molasses
¼ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp garlic powder
fresh ground pepper

I've actually been wondering about different sugars. I keep honey, agave, and white sugar, and cane sugar. I'm starting to make my own brown sugar so I've added molasses as well.
I keep all of what you keep but being a southern girl I also keep sorghum. On a rare cold day in Georgia fresh homemade biscuits with butter and sorghum is awesome!!!

Oh no sorghum is made from the sorghum plant. Unfortunately it is hard to find. It can be a syrup or made as a flour. It is gluten-free and the syrup does not require refrigeration. Whole Foods or other health food stores usually carry it, but it is hard to find.
I store honey, cane sugar, and white sugar. I prefer jam on my pancakes.

I keep molasses (mostly for homemade as salt free as possible bbq sauce, honey, brown sugar, maple syrup, 10x & white sugar. I make birthday cakes for family members, but sometimes I skip the buttercream frosting and go for whipped cream with fruit instead. There are a lot of us when we gather at my parents for Sunday dinner, so generally there is no leftover cake to worry about the cream separating.

I was iron deficient when I was younger and molasses was one of the things on my list to have. Hot molasses milk is yummy too. And, yes, haven't bought brown sugar for years.☺️
I don't do pancakes much but I love syrup drizzled on yogurt.
I'm blessed that there's an apiary in the next town over. I take my bucket and they fill it there. I'll say that a perfect funnel to fill your honey bear is a 2-liter bottle cut off at the shoulder. (The soda goes in the compost.😝) It fits perfectly and won't fall off onto your counter.
Another sugar I used to keep on hand for the ex was xylitol because he was t2 diabetic. It's a reverse sugar, doesn't have an aftertaste, antibiotic, and I think it has a cleaner taste than sugar.

Since I need to limit my sugar (diabetic), my sugar that is not for ferments, I stick to monk fruit, stevia, and erythritol .

Mom used to feed us molasses milk. We grew up in WA. Seattle til late 60s, WW/CP from late 60s on
My kids have fond memories of that!!! Made it in the 80s. Every once on a cold winter's night I make myself some!
What is funny is I had really thought it was just my own idea, I had never heard of it before one day I just had a thought that molasses in milk might be a great combination, haha
@@RainCountryHomestead maybe a depression thing? Or European? My gramma was Swede... My mom fed us this, as well as some of my aunts, her sisters. They obviously did it for the vits but had us kids convinced it was a special treat, best be good or no bunny milk (cuz rabbit on label) for you. Mom also would use this stuff called mapleine to make "maple syrup" but a drop in milk made it tasty. 1 drop, not 2. I think she doctored our milk so much to hide the taste that back then she would mix the milk half milk half powdered milk. Top many kids not enough $ or could have been fridge limits..

Heidi, I am not sure if you knew that organic honey is not always organic; as the bee keeper I purchase from said that your bee's go 3 to 5 miles, so if your close to another farm, house or what ever; and they use Pesticides your honey will not be organic. She said you would have to put your bee's in the center of the Property 3 to 5 miles from direction. We do store sugars cane, honey Maple syrup. I use myself as a diabetic honey, but I do it moderation! I stay away from the Maple syrup, and the cane sugar as they brings me up with my blood sugars. You're right. Sadly, 'organic honey' is mostly a marketing term rather than reality. Our bees forage up to 5 square miles past our organic property and we know for a fact that many local farmers love their sprays and bees don't know the difference. A local burger joint likes to dump their leftover soda and other high fructose corn syrup junk behind their stand and the bees have also foraged that. Result was super hard sugar they couldn't chew into through winter and we lost several hives this way. We couldn't even melt it out and had to throw out the rock hard comb.
Right, though I am sure they hope the bees gather from mostly organic flowers, there is no way to be certain. I believe the labeling is based on what is most abundant around them. Even to label something orange blossom or blackberry honey is only according to what they around most but does not mean other flowers are not involved in making the honey
@@RainCountryHomestead not only that but how bees are treated, organic honey comes from bees that are not treated with any chemical products..I didn't know this before but a friend who keeps bees told me that...this year is the worst for honey in Italy and I asked him to get me some honey from an other farm, as he has none this year..he told me that they use certain chemicals on the bees for certain pests! So I didn't get any from them. Just saying, the organic honey is not for the flowers the bees forges but rather for how they are treated.

There are 6 girls in my family, as we reached puberty every last one of us started having issues with occasional low blood sugar.
The 1st time it happened to me my Mom, who also had the same problem, went and mixed up some molasses and milk for me along with bread and butter.
Within minutes I felt better.
Throughout my life, I'm 59 now, I've had problems with low blood sugar ( hypoglycemia) , my go to has been molasses and milk.
A doctor told me that molasses and milk make a more complete yet gentler sugar that your pancreas can more quickly and efficiently process without causing a massive spike then drop like other sugars can.
Wow just never knew all the variety of sugars, I am such a sweetaholic, just found out a few months ago I was borderline diabetic. I now have cut back and trying to find sweet alternatives, thanks for sharing this really helps, blessings
Stevia was used in the country of Parquey to control diabetis. They used the whole plant. It has strong green taste plus very sweet. Sometimes being somewhat overweight can cause diabetis. I helped a friend bring his reading down to a very good level. I used food. High level: more basic greens like broccoli, cabbage, kale, etc
Less protein. To satisfly his snacking, I made sugar free gelatin bars. They have to be chewed. Good luck Tennessee Girl. By the he was put in the hospital since his level was in danger zone. He refused to listen to the nutrition nurse, or his Doctor about his diet. He told them his friend would take care of it. His 1St checkup, we had his levels way down. He told his doc, see told you she would take care of it. God bless.
@@elizabethcope1502 thank you for sharing. I have a stevia plant and use it dehydrated. All of my Dad's side of the family were diabetic in later years of life, it's most likely a genetic for me. I'm working on not going on meds, prayers for me please, blessings
I store the blonde organic sugar, maple syrup and honey the most. Also smaller amounts of old fashioned molasses (and even less of blackstrap) I just added storing sucanat. I keep real cane white sugar for feeding the hummingbirds. (They can't handle the extra minerals)
Correct, I did not think to mention that. I do keep the white cane sugar on hand for the very same purpose, that is all it gets used for. We mostly just get winter hummingbirds so I do not think about it this time of year
I’m so glad to have read this comment. I’ve only used white sugar for the hummingbirds so far, but am converting my kitchen over, so would have made this change as well. I was actually thinking the white sugar might be bad for the birds!

I stole the same sugars but add stevia. I buy local honey, the darker maple syrup and two kinds of molasses in Addison to cane sugar ( most of which is used for making hummingbird nectar).
I use carob powder for fermenting a lot and even to make a liquid bread starter. Yes, it does turn everything brown but it brews well, it's dry fruit and unlike chocolate powder it doesn't have any sugar in because it doesn't need it.. :)
When I was a kid we used to mix fancy molasses with peanut butter and eat it with bread. I also really like molasses on buckwheat pancakes.

If I want to use any brown sugars in wine or mead....I do it for the back sweetening. The molasses used for my hard cider gave it such a good flavor! If your not sure if you'll like it or not....pour a little cider in a cup and add molasses a little at a time.

Great video! I use molasses quite a bit as a cleanse it helps with stomach elimination. it's one tablespoon of molasses and one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of room temperature water when you first wake up in the morning.

I learned recently about making the brown sugar using molasses and I will certainly be trying that in the future. I use raw honey in my coffee every morning and in my herbal teas. I have local honey, real maple, coconut sugar, some green leaf stevia, which I hate the taste of, and date sugar. I try to avoid other sugars but will probably have to bring some into storage when I start making vinegar, ofc organic only.
ive only brought organic sugar for the past 10 years mainly raw cane but i like date sugar too since i had my first home at 16 ive never run out of any food or drink and ive never lived near a shop or supermarket
I store and use cane sugar, stevia, honey and molasses. My husband really likes dark brown sugar. I limit my sugar use, but I add stevia to my one cup of coffee in the morning. When my garlic is ready to harvest, I plan on making the honey and garlic

I get so tired of hearing people say: "Sugar is poison!" or even worse "Carbs are poison!" Well, we NEED carbs too. Even Jesus ate carbs! haha
@@RainCountryHomestead Wish I could remember the scripture that mentions what the basic breakfast was for people in biblical times. It was a wheat or barley flat bread with olive oil and olives and a drink of wine (probably just grape juice or a meed). That is definitely a high sugary carb meal. If that's what Jesus would eat regularly then it's good enough for almost everyone else unless they have medical restrictions.

Molasses with milk is good for psoriasis 😉
When your Kifer grains don't grow, use a tablespoon of unsulfured molasses to a batch ( a quart of water with 1T of molasses and 3T of sugar and a quarter cup of grains) because they need potassium. When I do that my grains triple. You only have to do this after a few batches of regular Kifer or when you see they aren't growing. Also, between a few batches, soak your grains in regular spring water for 20 minutes.
Yes, I have done that before but even with molasses one has to be careful not to use too much because of the high mineral content. I do not make kefir anymore because it is something I do not care to drink every day and when I am in the mood for a fizzy probiotic drink, I make one out of my own fermentation starter. Far less care involved in keeping it alive and I get more fizz.

Their member price is really cheap & they have org fruits and veggies chicken & beef for what I can't get from local farms. That is something I mean to talk about some day. I only store blackstrap because it is highest in minerals but true molasses is best in baking

We have both been so busy with our own separate things and Patrick ahs been needing to help different family members out quite a bit as well as him and our oldest son going into business together that we have simply not had time to do videos together lately. Maybe in winter we can start doing some again once the garden slows down and the wedding is over. We will see
My husband is diabetic, his dietitian stressed that using certain artificial sweeteners can cause issues with blood sugar that using small amounts of regular sugar won't.
My daughter and myself cannot consume most artificial sweeteners because they trigger severe asthma attacks and/or migraines.
Stevia doesn't but we're both tasters, meaning chemicals and certain compounds we can taste, and to me stevia leaves very nasty aftertaste.
I am glad you shared this because I have not looked deep into it but suspected what you said about the sweeteners vs small amounts of sugar. And yes, I agree on the stevia. I really do not care for it. Even the Monk Fruit, though much better, still has an odd after taste to me
@@RainCountryHomestead i should have added that the dietitian said that things like stevia and monk fruit are fine for diabetics but for most their flavors aren't pleasant. My husband won't touch them.

I do mention keto options here and there but we are not keto so I do not have a specific video on that. I have never tried either of those but honey powder does not make a lot of sense since honey does not spoil, it would seem best to have it in its regular form
I use sucanat in the place of brown sugar. Also you can use it in place of white but it will make your product darker.
Thanks Heidi, I have a question, please. I have bought real maple syrup and because we don’t consume it very quickly I found when I went to use it again it had mold. How do you store your opened maple syrup. Also, after reading all of the side effects on the bone density medicine my doctor put me on I decided against it and am upping my calcium intake. Thank you
I have never had mine get mold but I do store it in the fridge once I open it. You likely know this but make sure if you are taking calcium supplements that you are taking capsules and not tablets and that you are also taking a magnesium supplement with it. These two work together and the calcium is virtually useless without magnesium

@@rosierose7863 actually no it doesn’t because I pour mine straight from the jug into a jar I heat since I like my syrup warm on my pancakes. I am mature enough to know about cross contamination! No children in my home and my husband and I do NOT stick our fingers in the syrup jug.
sucanat/rapadura whole cane juice and molasses are the only sweeteners you want. rich in antioxidants and minerals. everything else is nutrient deficient.
No, they are not the only nutrient rich sugars, coconut sugar, as I mentioned is a good option and honey has other benefits health wise.

I don’t use much sugar as I age but I use it in my cooking at times..
Hope you are able to listen to the whole thing as I did cover non nutritive sweeteners but for an actual sugar, I recommend coconut sugar as it is not as high in sugar content (thus not as sweet either) but is also high in necessary minerals

Can you vacuum pack in jars the Kirkland cane sugar for long term?

There is no need to vacuum seal sugar. I just keep mine in the bags they come in inside a big bucket.

How do you prevent your sugar from going hard? Do you store your coconut sugar in the plastic bags they come in until you need to open or store in glass with vacuum sealer?
I usually just keep them in the bags they came in. My coconut sugar rarely goes hard

Those are fermented eggs. I allow them to ferment on the counter for at least three days and most of the time just leave them there as I am working through them. Sometimes I do refrigerate but it is not necessary. Fermented eggs should be worked through within a week because they tend to start to disintegrate after that time but do not spoil

I haven't but I do stock up on organic dates and sometimes use them in blended things for a touch of sweetness such as my homemade nut milks or even in homemade creamsicles
I have a question on brown sugar how do you keep it moist? My brown sugar always goes hard
Just keep in a container with a good seal. I usually only make what I need at a time but sometimes will make extra to keep on hand and store in a mason jar
If your brown sugar gets hard, just add a piece of white bread or half of a hot bun and seal. The next day your sugar will be soft again, the bread will be hard, then toss the bread.

So I looked it up and it was more expensive on Vitacost for the same amount. One as much as $10 more. The one at Costco is 33 ounces and is only $12.49 as opposed to 19.99 or 22.99 for 32 ounces at Vitacost. Maybe you were looking at a smaller size?
@@RainCountryHomestead sorry you are correct I saw the container and did not check the amount in the container it is the 16 oz and not the 32 oz. I do get a good price here locally but it is just a local store and they put it on sale every few weeks and I stock up when they do. Their regular price for a 32 oz is 14.99 but when it is on sale it is 9.99. Best deal I have every seen.

Jaggery I need to try yet, the Indian lady I watch always cooks with it. Monk fruit I am not interested in and stevia has this awful aftertaste to me.

I love coconut sugar but stopped using it because the sugar and the palm oil come from the tree.. not the coconut.. so they kill the tree rather than use a coconut.. and it takes a while to grow up a new tree. I also am concerned it will drive up the price of coconut products.
When it comes to palm oil, it is important to look for brands that are sustainably harvested, the sugar comes from the blossoms, not the tree itself
You must have a lot of space for storage.
When our boys moved out, yes, it gave us a couple of extra rooms for storage
