    I've been running a Paradigm 2200 sub daily for the past 25 years. I originally paid $900+ tax and at the time it was considered a high-end sub, among the best. It's a beast of a sub and it sounds as good now as it did on day one. Decided I wanted to update my system and a subwoofer was the final thing I needed to get so I went with the SVS PB4000 which cost about $2,300. This turned out to be a huge letdown because my 2200 absolutely destroys the PB4000 and that's with 25 years of daily usage! Looking at my new SVS, I'd say there's no chance in hell this thing will be still working in 25 years. Quality and performance in the audio world has taken a nosedive. You can still get great gear but you're paying twice as much for it now as you were 25 to 35 years ago. I've heard so many great things about these SVS subs and I wonder to myself, have these people ever actually heard a really good sub?

    I see you have the PB16 and the PB400, do they match up well? I always thought that you needed to have 2 of the same subwoofers. I recently bought the PB16 and I love it, its probably overkill but I wanted the best and I always hear that 2 are better than one, I have a small room so I figure that one is probably ok. However if I ever move and get a bigger room I would definitely go with two of them. What are your thoughts?

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 5 lety

      in small rooms on 4000 or a 16 ultra is plenty. When you move to a larger environment 2500cu/ft + then a second sub can help even out the room. You love the 16 ultra? You can match similar subs if they are close in performance. You dont want to match sealed and ported though.

    That Home Theater Dude I enjoy the videos. Last month, I began upgrading my Home Theater. I now have SVS Ultra Bookshelves and Ultra Center (powered by Monolith 5x), and 1 SVS SB-3000. I have a few questions. First, when it comes time to move my equipment into the large room that I'm intending to use, should I keep the Bookshelves as my mains (versus the towers)? If so, then what would you recommend as my 2 surrounds? The actual surround model, or another pair of Bookshelves? Secondly, would you recommend a second SB-3000, or upgrade to 1 SB-4000?

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 5 lety +1

      Im a huge fan of towers. A second 3000 will match very well in your room. You can go a step above or below but matching same for same is always preferred.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 5 lety

      More output for sure. If you are impressed with the 2 12s you'll love the sound out of the single 13.5. I had a klipsch sub before but it wasnt a premium line. I felt like it was easy to bottom out at normal settings. Plus SVS adds more SPL starting around 30hz and going down well below 20hz. Lots of other sub companies struggle in that range. Most has already tapered off spl around those frequencies. This is a general statement, so i would recommend trying both out yourself. I always say that the 4000 is more than most people will ever need. Its dangerous though, cause once you get used to that theater level of bass you may end up adding another one like I did haha. Hope this helps.

    I pulled the trigger on a pair of PB-4000 for a 3500 cuft room (hallways open to roughly 4500 cuft total, no doors). I am wondering if going dual pb-4000 is overkill?!? I have a similar setup as you with the Klipsch RP-280’s / 450c / 250s @ 7.1 with SVS pb10-nsd. Room is a bit oddly shaped (walk out basement), but seating is relatively smooth for base as long as you’re not moving around room. Generally listen at moderate levels with wife, under reference when alone. I am looking for clean / impactful sound more than loud. Mainly asking as I am having doubts and sub stock is resulting in one sub being shipped at a time, giving me time to cancel order on the second.
    I do love bass, but being in Canada we pay more and could use the extra $$$ on other enhancements.

    With a DSP you can lower a peak but you can't really level a null, because if you boost that particular frequency, you boost the canceling wave too. DSP will help to level the response but not make it perfect. Gonna need bass traps or different location of the subs.

      @@ThatHomeTheaterDude Well, watts are not the most important thing. If you 2x the watts you get only 3db. so 112db at 1000w, will mean 115db at 2000w.
      And those 4000+ watts peak, it's kind of marketing. Peak power 2x the nominal power and it only happens for a fraction of a second (drum kicks).
      One PB16-Ultra costs 2500$
      For that price you buy, the famous INUKE 6000 (or it's currently replaced with (NX6000)), The INUKE 6000 is bench tested from Bid D Wiz, and it does around 2k per channel at 4omhs continuous!!! . This Amp on amazon is 450$,
      So you have 2000$ left.
      Parts express sells the Dayton um18-22 for 325$ or if you buy 4 of those, it sell for 299 a piece. So slam 4 of those 18 inch, 1000 watts subs for 1000$. You still have 1000$ left to DIY boxes or pay someone to do it.
      You will need a miniDSP for 100$ for EQ and other corrections and it's good to get the mic too so.
      So for the price of 1x16 inch 1500w you get 4x18 1000w.
      Yes, boxes are gonna be huge, and super ugly. There two the only downside i can think of.
      They won't have the special rubber feet that you can actually buy seperatly.
      They won't have the glossy finish which i don't like because of reflections that should be removed completely for a home cinema!!.
      EDIT EDIT: You lose the quality of the driver and the insurance on these. So no customer service and all the benefits that SVS gives! That's a really big con for the DIY approach.

    I made the box and there’s no way my wife’s going to be ok with it and if I’m honest it does looks ridiculous in my room. It just sticks way to far out into my room. I been watching your previous videos comparing pb 4000 and sb 4000 and saw you and your wife liked the pb 4000 way more. So I’m considering the sb 16 ultra. I do have a open room concept. the only one i like is their big boy the -115. its visually appealing and it has a good amount of sound. conversly there are better subs with more performance for the money. But if it has to be klipsch then the 15 is all you will need. I have experienced them with the rp series and the RF series. In an RF environment the sub is needed less becuase of the overall tone of the towers. It will make a bigger difference matching them to the "smaller" towers.

    Have you had a chance to demo any other ID subs? PSA, JTR, Rythmik, HSU, Seaton, Monolith, Diy would be a good start to compare how those other subs are to these 2. THOSE over deliver for their price with the same 5 year warranty.
    I agree though, having a great sub adds a whole other immersion on your HT. I stared with the PC12 then upgraded to the pc12+ then upgraded to the PB16. Was set on the PB16, but price was too much for 1 sub so I ventured looking into other subs. I demoed PSA, HSU, Monolith, and diy. I returned the PB16 and ended up going DIY and the Monolith 15 for less than 1 PB16. Look around folks, see what else is out there. SVS subs are great, it's because of them that got me to become a bass head 😅 but there's others out there that can match its performance/output for less $$$$ if you're on a budget.

      usually running a more capable sub "cooler" will sound better than running a small sub hotter. either ways the small will do its job becuase in a small enclosed room the room becomes the second box or cabinet. This is called room gain. There are plemty of instances where choosing small subs is perfectly normal. on the flip side its good to have it and not need it rather than needing and not having it.
