    Red Wrench on the bolt always helps. I recently had the same problem on an 87 F150 with a 5.0, ended up having to drop the oil pan in order to get the timing chain cover back on.

    Dude, you cannot try and get out a bad nuts without putting all of the bolts back in and then you take the bad bolt out first, so it has no tension from the plate or manifold or whatever is holding it I hope this helps you in the future. This is one of the best tips you’ll ever learn.😊

    Great job with that old bus ! Reminds me of the school bus I rode in as a kid in AZ. It was about the same size, but it was an early 50s International. Great memory of the nice bus driver who would let us kids take turns operating the swing out stop sign.

    That's the trouble with old vehicles if it's not one thing it's another.
    But once you replace everything it will be like brand new.
    The bus has come a long way after its life was saves from the woods.🚌🚌🚌😁😁😎😎👍👍👍

    There should be drain plugs on each side of the block to help you catch the coolant before removing the timing cover, which is worth your time in Eco-Oregon.

    Good job, Jason! It takes a lot of patience to deal with these old buggys. There is seemingly always something that breaks, quits working or you can't find the right part. I wish I could get out there to Oregon to meet you and go to the car shows but I'm on the opposite coast. Maybe one day, though. We've got friends and a family member who live in your area! Best wishes and keep on turning those wrenches!

    When you do the exhaust manifolds be sure to resurface the manifolds because they don't use gaskets from the factory.

    Very fortunate for you, not having lineup pins sticking out of the front of the block. Otherwise, you would have been dropping your oil pan. On the 5.0 it is such a tight fit. Hopefully no coolant went down in your oil pan.

  • @stevenm3141
    @stevenm3141 Před rokem +3

    Just the fact that you back the bolts in both directions saved your bacon more than once. Try to use a socket instead of a wrench as a go-to. Always use OEM if possible otherwise you must use bolts with the same hardness and size, pitch etc.

  • @alan6832
    @alan6832 Před rokem +1

    Another CZcamsr had much better luck with Seafoam Deep Creep than with PBBlaster, might work. might try it myself at some point. I also like to keep the impact gun on it longer and just try to eventually pulverize the rust with it. And maybe acids like Vinegar? You might also have been able to use the cutoff wheel on just the nuts and saved the bolts, and 6 sided sockets on both ends instead of that combination wrench might have prevented rounding.

    On that lower right bolt. hit it with a hammer until it starts to mushroom a bit, but not so much that the wrench won't fit. The shock waves will travel down the bolt better than oil and break up the rust. Also, work it back and forth at least 20 times before removing it, even pressure back and forth before breaking it loose helps.

    Better next time heat bolts before start removing these. Whike heat destroys all the junk in there wgat holds it back.
    Also every bolt what comes out put new one in while all these are so weak anyway.
    Also is good idea always run over all the threats before put new bolts in. Just to be sure it is clean inside. Wash also with break cleaner.

  • @alan6832
    @alan6832 Před rokem +1

    Didn't Chas do a whole episode on rusty bolt removal? Anyway, my advice on exhaust bolts is hit them with penetrating oil (Deep Creep?) now, a week in advance and then pound them straight inwards with a hammer as hard and as many times as you can without making it difficult to fit the wrench on the hex. The shock waves travel down the bolts to the threads, help the oil wick there as well, and break up the rust on the threads because the rust is more brittle than the steel. Don't miss and crack the cast iron manifolds though.

  • @williamhenley2185

    On Ford engines they leak oil right there at the timing cover to oil pan spots it's good to put RTV there in the future.

  • @alan6832
    @alan6832 Před rokem +1

    The bolt breakage is from stress-corrosion, but I bet it was 90% corrosion and only about 10% stress in this case.

  • @TheJstewart2010
    @TheJstewart2010 Před rokem +1

    That bolt had definitely been over-tightened by someone before you. It looks like it broke where and when it did because the threads in the stretched region, which are out of pitch, reached the threads in the timing cover. Because the bolt and hole thread pitches didn't match, it put a lot of stress at the stretched region and it broke. The remaining part was loose because it didn't contain the out-of-pitch part of the bolt. You were holding most of the out-of-pitch part in your hand.

    You might want to change the oil after dumping coolant in it when you removed the timing cover. Do it after you remove the bolts that go through the cooling passages that you didn't put sealant on, or you're just going to piss coolant in the oil.
