- Jazmine Sullivan: Tiny Desk (voice teacher reaction)
This is my react video to the absolute phenom of a singer Jazmine Sullivan. I break down how she does some of what she does and then I proceed to freak over her outlandishly amazing singing. - Hry
She's talking to herself, telling herself to "Get it together, bitch". But yeah, she currently owns my current and future edges. She's a vocal BEAST.
She is probably one of the best singers I've ever heard. I'm completely floored.
NOT YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE EDGES IM DEAD 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"I've never heard of a Jazmine Sullivan and that's a crime." No that's a sin😂.
Can't it be both?
Agreed sin and crime. But u aren’t alone. I have waited so long for her come up.
No worries. You know now. She’s good. Enjoy.
I love the honesty 😂
It was so nice to see someone experience Jazmine's music for the first time. I've been a fan for years and she still takes me by surprise. Looking forward to part 2.
Excited to record part 2. I feel lucky I got to experience this level of performance.
@@LesageSinging u get a D 4 not knowing her she is annoted bby.
As a LONGTIME fan of Jazmine, “She’s a perfect storm” is the best description of her that I’ve heard
heya, i'm responding to this in a video dedicated to comments. stay tuned for that.
I can't say enough good things about her singing. I'm so happy i have the pleasure of hearing her talent.
Lol those have been her background singers since she started... the one in the middle came about 6 years ago. The drummer is her boyfriend 🤣 & the other people are apart of her normal tour band.
Her back up singers are just nutty. Everyone here is superb.
You should react more of her! She's one of the greatest R&B singers in our generation
I've been a fan of Jazmine Sullivan for a long time. It amazes me how long it has taken for her to get the recognition she DEFINITELY deserves. I have always been envious of her voice. If I could sing like that, I would never shut up. On top of her amazing vocal ability, she creates amazing arrangements and her songwriting is next level too!!!!!!!
Love how he recognized those back vocals.. you should do a part two !!
I think I might have to 😃
@@LesageSinging loved the tips
I love back up singers, they are 💣 💥
Jazmine went to the Philadelphia High School of performing arts but was always a natural vocalist glad to see you react to her.
heya, i'm responding to this in a video dedicated to comments. stay tuned for that.
I lived in philly for seven years and had never heard of that highschool. It just goes to show how rich the music culture is in Philadelphia.
@@LesageSinging I think boyz II men and the roots also went there.
Yes the chin tilt is often used in r&b singing as it helps create that sultry, slurred tone that that you heard Jazmine employ in her second song. It also helps increase airflow within the vocal chamber and thus runs and falsetto notes are easier to execute.
Very interesting. Thank you for clarifying.
Thank you for sharing. I noticed many folks who aren't familiar with that style, were distracted, especially if from a classical background.
@@rahneff3952 in classical music a lower larynx is desirable and unfortunately, classical technique is the one that ends up being taught the most.
I've only started learning other styles and methods about four years ago. It's been extremely liberating to learn the voice as a matter of cause and effect as opposed to right and wrong.
@@LesageSinging Yes, it’s pretty cool that we can manipulate our voices in so many different ways, the possibilities are endless. With the chin tilt, it’s more often used to facilitate the talk-singing style but definitely isn’t healthy if you are trying to do belts, for which having the larynx in a relaxed and neutral/lowered position would be better!
@@LesageSinging i love that “cause and effect” instead of “right and wrong”
The last song she did with HER is so good too
I was running super long so I cut short. I gotta see that now.
That and list one weee the best
Yaasss... Jazmine never disappoints. My favorite right now is "Girl like me." The entire album is 💥!
Lol “That’s just years” 😂😂
I mean, it's true haha. For all the deserving accolades she gets for being prodigic, her natural ability alone doesn't explain how good she is. She clearly worked at it you know?
Like felt this lmao
Her lows are luscious!!!! That was the perfect word....... jaz! Is da freakn truth 🔥
1:14 her lows ARE luscious!!! You are so right to describe them that way! But I absolutely LOVED when you said it's almost bothersome 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I swear she always makes me feel this way. Like her artistry is just unnecessary sometimes. She gives us so much! I just love her, I'm truly obsessed with her voice! Makes me think of 🍫 and chocolate makers 😍😍😍😍😍
I think you'll enjoy the video I have scheduled for Friday. Folks want my take on her singing at 11 (she is indeed impressive there as well), but I want people to understand that this is so much more than just talent. It's her, you know? She has put so much into her development as a singer and artist. It takes a lot to be THIS many levels above the average singer. The fact that she is this good is a form of self expression in and of itself.
The video is a bit embarrassingly passionate, but I hope I get the point across. If not, I'll maybe do some more break downs of her technique.
There's so much to see here. And yeah, that's frustrating haha. It's also inspiring though.
@@LesageSinging Agreed. I will be patiently awaiting Friday's video! There was nothing embarrassing about your passion, her voice makes one emotional. There's such beauty in it
@@jessicandennis I need to listen to more rnb to appreciate tone. I'm really lucky folks have just made SO many recommendations.
I am in the middle of moving and didn't get many reacts done/scheduled. However, I still have tomorrow off so I plan on enjoying myself.
That’s how we felt seeing her live like “you’re just showing off at this point” and it’s like “nah, I’m just breathing” 🫠🫠
Jazmine vocal abilities is just sick I love her.
She's incredible. I'm really happy folks recommend such amazing artists.
“I gotta keep going.” That was me watching you react to the musical goddess that is Jazmine Sullivan. I too was baffled and amazed and excited by her talent when I first heard her (granted it was over 15 years ago). I am extremely happy to see you have been turned on to her, and you are introducing her talents to more people.
I actually am trying to drive traffic from other reacts to the Jazmine videos for that reason. This woman is criminally under rated.
Jazmine Sullivan is a BEAST hands down! May I make a suggestion? Other Greats are Rachelle Ferrell, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, and Jill Scott. Don’t know if you’ve ever heard them sing but you are in for a lifetime of treats! Please check them out and prepare to be blown away over and over again.
Jazmine is one of the best. The Queen of Emotion.
Queen of a whole lot! She really is amazing
Love your analysis, shock, and amazement! We all feel the same! Her musicality is amazing! Just raw, sultry, jazzy, and phenomenal.
I want the woman to have far more recognition that she does for that very reason!
You should see Jazmine sing home from the wizard of oz at 11 years old insane !!!!
Watching you lose it watching all of them perform has been happiness. I love all of this!!!!
What makes her so good is she has the ability to do different things with her voice. She reminds me of the master VOICE, Whitney Houston.
Lesage. Sir! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! To see your enjoyment made me feel like I was hearing Jazmin for the first time. Thank you for your appreciation of music!!!!
I'm glad we can share the experience on the interwebs! It's a lot of fun.
"Her lows are luscious" ❤
LMAO 🤣
She's a vocal beast! I really enjoyed this video.
She really is a beast. This is some of the best singing I've ever heard and I have been pursuing the craft for 14 years.
Thank God she’s going on tour!
Could you review Brandy -Say Something/Borderline performance on the Soultrain Awards. Shes another great singer that ulitizes her lower register, false folds, and has amazing vocal agility. She ones of Jazmines favorite singers btw.
I'll add it to the list. I'm excited to binge a ton of great singers once I get a day off.
I like that you appreciate the artistry and musicianship of Jazmine Sullivan. Maxwell before 2009, vocally was a beast and live performances are excellent. You should listen to some of his work, especially his cover of " This Womans work."
Check out her acoustic live version of her song called pick up your feelings.
I absolutely LOVED watching you geek out to this. I have been obsessing over her Tiny Desk performance because it is ridiculously PHENOMENAL. Thank you for explaining all the technical ways why.
She's been out since the Apollo days with Steve Harvey. She is the best and underrated. Sooo glad she is now getting her recognition. Kudos Jazmine.
She's so good and such a great artist/singer writer/musician. I hope she gets all she deserves and then some.
@@LesageSinging If you're looking for suggestion check out Kierra Sheard
It was amazing to watch you experience the beauty that is Jazmine Sullivan’s voice. I’d be excited to watch you finish the set.
I'm doing it first thing tomorrow 😁
It’s so cute to watch him get so flustered at how good she is 😂😂😂 it’s crazy to know that she’s BEEN this good 💯
What Jazmine does with her voice can't be taught.
I'm inclined to agree. Voice teachers are, at best, a guide. Jazmine blazed her own trail.
Check out Jazmine Sullivan - Pick up your feelings (live)!! I would like to hear your reaction.
I'll give it a look see
The live version around the palm trees.
Her tiny desk is still, to this day, the best performance I’ve ever seen. Ever bit of it is a masterpiece
One more suggestion and it’s only like one minute long lol. Hear My Prayer by Callie Day. It’s a video of her practicing with just a piano and a couple people. She also filets my heart open with her voice. Goodness, I’m so thankful music exists. It makes you happy to be alive when nothing else can.
If you haven’t seen her Fallon performance of Girl like me, I highly recommend !! Vocal masterpiece.
There's been such an influx of demand and I don't know if I'll get to it. That said, it's been requested twice so I will make a note of it in my "video to do" list!
I always make decisions on what to react to based on comments so I'll scroll through the comments next week to pick one.
I try to go through every request that folks make, but I can't get to them all. I'll try my best though!
Jazmine Sullivan is a magical voice goodness!!! Her BG vocals and band is amazing. FYI The drummer is Jazmine's boyfriend 💕
I have heard a lot about her, she is singing up to those great things I 've heard . She is awesome, beautiful instrumental, such vocal control, wow it just awesome a skilled musical. Love it
MAAAANNNNNNNN!! I've been singing over 40 years. I started practicing runs in the 90s, when it became popular in R&B. People ALWAYS ask me how I do it so easily... after 30 yrs of practice, it BETTER be easy, lol! I've learned from Brian McKnight, Wanya Morris from Boyz II Men, and Gary "Lil G" Jenkins, from Silk. I actually got to sing with him when he promoted his solo album. PLEASE feel free to watch Silk perform, "Lose Control". He's the short guy with most of the leads...🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
YOU. WILL. LOVE. IT!! ESPECIALLY if they're singing a capella!
Wow what a flex✅ You’re definitely blessed❤️
You should react to her singing at age 11...her ability is definitely part technique and part just her being a prodigy!!!
"My green tea latte which I drink cause I'm bougie"😂😂😂
*with pink extended and an underbite* this soy green tea latte has nodes of nutty flavors.
I wish I could like your video 100 times. I’ve watched this at least 10 times. Makes me feel like learning how to sing as a hubby. I appreciate you .
She is blessed with beauty and talent she's magical
You should do a Pt 2 boss. You get what’s happening here.
I can't wait to finish watching the video. I'll def be posting a part 2.
"Her lows are LUSCIOUS!" LOL Love it!
He fell in love with the voice and the skills. Been at since like 6 I think. I love watching ppl listening to her.
Aww man. I wanted to see you react to it all. Great reaction!
I'm surprised people were willing to watch all of it. My mistake because I would have 100% watched it all.
I would have watched it all. Love your comments and how you actually listen to the voice and lyrics. I really wanted to see your reaction to the last song with HER. I know you would have really enjoyed that as well as everything else
Just discovered your channel! Where do I even begin?! Love it~ ♡♡♡
First time viewer here. I loved your reaction to this super talented singer. I feel like I've witnessed the birth of a new Jazmine Sullivan fan.
I love this reaction! So informative, and your passion for singing is lovely and endearing. I’m getting excited with you lol. Her tiny desk is fantastic, I listen to it frequently!
Incredible voice that she was born with! Can somebody say something about that drummer! Love her voice and that drummer!!
That drummer is bananas. If I didn't mention it in the video, then I meant to.
The drummer is her boyfriend!
Beautiful! This is what I love to hear. Someone listening to the music they way I do. Love your commentary. I’m subscribing. 🙏🏾❤️
The tilting of the head in r&b and gospel is the emotion the singer is feeling.....not usually or necessarily done for technical purposes. And it’s interesting to watch you react to Jazmine. And yes, the background singers are awesome as well. When the world opens back up, I think you should go check out some live r&b music.
Thanks. I appreciate the clarification
sooo goood, what a masterpiece
I love your reactions!!!
Adding another singer! Anita Baker who is also a contralto! She's old school r&b and has been singing for decades
heya, i'm responding to this in a video dedicated to comments. stay tuned for that.
I LOVE older woman who have deeper singing voices. My personal favorite is big mama thornton. Very excited to check her out.
I LOVE your excitement and technical knowledge. This is a fun channel since I love vocalist and just musical stylings in general.
Awesome analysis, great personality, thanks
I absolutely love this review...Jasmine is one of my favorite singers...this npr performance is also one of my favorite...I love your breakdown....it gave me some perspectives I really appreciate...
I wish you did the whole video. Great reaction!
i just hit the subscribe button, this guy's honesty is refreshing. I love music (a better listener than I am singer), and I'm learning so much from your channel. I feel like my ears are getting trained. Cudos man, thank you.
"Damn" ... Yesss indeed! Lol. Enjoyed your reaction and yes she's a beast wit it!🔥🔥🔥

You make me even more excited! I love her so much 😭😭😭
I'm so happy I can do that. She is deserving of a silly amount of recognition. She really is that good.
“That’s sooooo low!!!” Right?! God 😭😭😭😭
Please do Chloe x Halle. Literally any performance lol. That’s how good they are.
That's a D-3!!! That's so low for a woman!! I loved it sir!!
Thank you for emphasizing the bgv’s, sometimes I luv listening to them more than the main vocalist.
I just found this page and I'm officially a fan.
Great video. Wish you would of done the next song because what she did on “Let it Burn” was different.
I regret getting self conscious about the videos length. I'll have to do a part two.
She was doing crazy runs at 11... look up her performance of Home.
I already did. It's an amazing performance.
Loved your reaction :) !!!
Thanks. I may or may not have woken up the neighbors while I was freaking out 😂
I’ve commented previously,, (realized I did not subscribe which was just rude🤦🏾♀️) but I promise you I watch this reaction at least once a day ,,, like I literally love you for this reaction BECAUSE!! To see anyone experiencing jaz for the very first time is ALWAYS ENJOYABLE,, but honestly I love how you just appreciate it and dissect the ENTIRE PERFORMANCE jaz, back up, band, technique like …… we are so the same like I promise you we were siblings in a previous life or another,,, like you just GET IT!!! and I am here for it all🙌🙌🙌🏾🤗🤗
Extraordinary!!!! Period
💯 % agreed
I enjoyed this.
Please do Jazmine Sullivan - "Story to Tell" Mind Blowing!
Felt it soooo much the "Bodies" Song. And at the points where you'd be on some "No". She literally told Tiny Desks " y'all said concert, who you think I am? "
You should also react to her Our story to tell she covers some of her older songs and new ones as well but it’s a different experience from this tiny desk! It’s absolutely amazing I’m a huge Jazmine fan!
Lol this is my 3rd time watching you react to this. If I can suggest another video, I’d say please do “Evergreen” by Yebba (the Apple Beats performance in the cathedral). Also a bit of a curveball suggestion lol...”Change Me” by Tamela Mann. It’s actually a gospel performance but it’s another great example of control, blending, and just a lifetime of experience making an amazing performance. ❤️
I love jasmine 😻😻 .
you should also react to some of brandy she’s a vocalist!
The head up tilt does change the sound and it is often used in emotional parts in r&b
I'll have to look into the specifics of what is actually physically happening. I will ask my voice and speech pathologist contact. I bet something really cool is happening when one does that in order to create the change in sound.
@@LesageSinging I’m curious on what they say I’ll be looking out for a video where you explain it. It’s so common in gospel so if you want to compare but Jazmine’s musical mentor is Kim Burrell and she is a major gospel artist. Thanks for responding
@@loveleeeventplanningl.l.c.7539 gospel royalty!
Great reaction. You should check out Mariah Carey “if it’s over” live at the Grammys.
I'll make a note of it. Excited to check it out.
“Which i drink because I’m boujie”😂 you are funny sir
You got to do part 2 !
I recorded it this morning! I had to leave for work while the video was encoding, but it should be up tomorrow.
Aww. I really wanted you to talk about HER and Jazmine together
I'm uploading that tomorrow. I have it recorded :)
“That’s sooooo loooow” 😂😂
Please do the second half!
I definitely will and I cannot wait to 😃
You said that’s years then clearly you never saw the clip from when she was 11.. baby that’s just God given talent
Please do a part 2!
It's on the way!
GOD went to sleep after making her and Mariah💖💖
You NEED to react to Sohyang's "Everyone" in Immortal Songs it's legitimately one of the hardest vocal performances she's ever done(Also "Mona Lisa" by her on the Masked Singer is just 0_o insane)
React to Jazmine singing “Home” from The Wiz at age 11
I LOVE a low note!
Have you seen her sing "Home" at age 11???? Unbelievable
The reason she tilts her head up is that she doesn't want all the air go go into the mic, so she was vocalizing into the air by tilting her head and then she slowly brings it down.
That would make sense. Apparently many teach belting with that tilt, but this was new for me.
And may I add she knows how to belt because that style is often used in black music sweety! Especially black gospel!
heya, i'm responding to this in a video dedicated to comments. stay tuned for that.
I had the absolute pleasure of performing with a group in philadelphia that KILLED black gospel. They absolutely punked the temple university chorus (which I was in) and I couldn't have been happier. They also sang with the philly orchestra. I think belting is probably the hardest thing to do in singing (has the most vocal injuries) and black gospel is brutally difficult. When someone does it well, let alone an entire choir, its an exhilarating experience; one that I will never forget.
Did you watch the last song with HER? Great performance by the two, especially since it was live.
Gave me all kinds of feelings... the harmony was excellent, song lyrics 10 and performane overall gets ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!
You gotta react to Kim Burrell!
Yaaay pls react to lauryn hill peace of mind live😊
You got it destini :)
@@LesageSinging it like a live freestyle I think you will enjoy it😊
