Glad you reacted to the second half! I enjoyed hearing your take on it. That said, while I do agree you can teach yourself to do runs, I don't want people to get their hopes up thinking they'll be able to do runs and riffs as well as Jaz lol, cuz she's on a different level! I can do runs and riffs pretty well myself, but her precision, cleanliness, musicality, and how she strategically approaches her riffs and runs in her songs really sets her apart. Plus, your ear has to be crazy good to come up with, let alone execute some of the riffs and runs that she does! You can hear it especially in that Tonight Show performance of Girl Like Me that everybody keeps mentioning. Her ear is INSANE!

I think the musicianship is where a lot of people would have problems. I personally have never had to work for vocal agility (though as I age I have to actually bother to practice it) and so I never found it impressive.
That said, in my brief time playing jazz guitar, I know how hard it is to make musical decisions with scales against chords. It's this portion of Jazmine's extremely developed musical intuition that I find incredible.
Her ability to do that also speaks volumes about her song writing.

The thing about runs, aside from making your voice move quick, you need a really good ear for them to happen to fit into what you’re singing. As someone who does a lot of runs, very few can do it like Jazmine can. She does them very quick in between words and the notes she picks can be hard, ESPECIALLY when she goes outside of the keys within the cords she singing. It’s unheard of.

    • @LesageSinging

Correct me if I'm wrong...but it seems like when you think of rasp, you think of this very smokey, airy sound like Macy Gray. Then when you think of vocal fry, you think of grittiness and growls. That's a very by-the-book way to look at it, which I can respect to a certain degree. However if we're honest, Gospel, R&B, & Soul (the black genres) are a bit too unconventional to be sufficiently judged by those standards. In those genres, we define raspiness as smokey, husky tones or even clear tones with gritty textures. It's basically any tone that isn't crystal clear. The fact is the voice has layers. In some places it can sound huskier and darker, and in other places it can sound brighter and clearer. In some places it can be strong and in other places it can thin out. The more you follow Jazmine and really watch her sing, the more you'll be able to see that there are layers to her voice that can't be defined by a text book. What you call a vocal fry isn't that for Jazmine because it's natural. She's not purposely TRYING to sound gritty; it just is. Watch her more closely. Once she hits another layer of her voice...normally the higher she goes, the grittier it gets. And it's natural. If you pay close attention, even when she sounds clear, it isn't. There's this husky quality. I saw a comment saying that her falsettos are clear. False! SOME of her falsettos are clear. Check the tiny desk performance when sang "Girl Like Me" with H.E.R. At the end of the song when the full band came back in and they started vibing, Jazmine did this run in falsetto (in a long E vowel) and there were little breaks in it. They weren't cracks. It wasn't due to a lack of air. It was that raspy quality of her voice coming through. As I said yesterday, pay CLOSE attention to her vibrato. Sometimes there can be breaks in her vibrato due to her raspiness. I don't believe there are only two types of voices in this world, super rough damaged voices and crystal clear. I believe there are some naturally, interesting tones like Jasmine's that defy textbook teachings. Too much education can hinder you from really appreciating a rare beauty.

    • @LesageSinging
      @LesageSinging Před 3 lety +7

You and several others have been trying to communicate this sentiment, though this is certainly the most thorough among them. The tldr of everything to follow is: I don't think I understand the concept of rasp, but I'm extremely interested in it.
I'm trying to keep my ear open to these sorts of things while also keeping in mind the versatility the human voice has from the manipulation of its anatomy.
I don't know if I'll ever find a perfect balance of understanding, but I definitely enjoy trying to enrich my ear.
If I wasn't at work at the moment, I'd give a listen to the specific things you outlined this very minute. I'm very appreciative you took the time to explain all this thoughtfully. Thank you. You've clearly spent a tremendous amount of time thinking about this and are gracious in sharing your knowledge.
I do disagree on one potential idea and please correct me if I misunderstand you. The notion that the study of the human voice from a anatomic and, for lack of a better word, scientific point of view is somehow dispassionate is something I disagree with full stop. Folks from all walks of life throw themselves into the study of the human voice. People spend decades of their entire lives obsessing over every detail trying to measure and glean one more nugget of understanding. If I were here reciting a textbook, I'd agree that would be ludicrous. That's not what I'm trying to do though.
I'm no scientist (I can't afford the schooling). However, I try to understand the human voice, the physics of sound, and I regularly work with a voice and speech pathologist. Why? Because I think it's super cool and it allows me to do more with my voice. That's it. I'm not citing a book of rules to be right. I am not invested in being right. I think that would be disrespectful to the artists and the science. I'm invested in knowing more about singing and music until the day I die. I'm frankly glad there is no finish line.
I enjoy pursuing both very passionately and I think a combined approach is a very rich one. It's not for everyone, but it's the approach that has worked best for me.
I guess put succinctly, I'm trying to understand more. I most certainly do not claim to know all. I wouldn't treat any style or singer (yes even classical music) with that presumption because I think it'd be the epitome of pompousness.
Unfortunately, classical singers who precede me have created a rational expectation of pompousness with their elitist and disrespectful tact. I don't blame folks who assume I am super imposing academia arrogantly upon amazing art and artists.

I don't know if you ever seen her video at the Apollo Theater when she was 11 years old that voice was already very Advanced scary vest for a child I watched it over and over and over again. I don't doubt that I am missing pieces of the puzzle. The last time I got really into r&b was when Brian McKnight released back at one. So, I definitely need to wise up to more R&B.
I'm glad folks are taking the time to point it out. Some even went so far as to make a long list of names to listen to and I am really happy to listen to them.
It's been years since I've been this inspired by listening to singing. I've been so steeped in academia and training myself, that I missed the point for years. Listening to these artists folks are telling me about is like coming awake from a fog.
You're right, not everything can be technically explained. Even physicists who do vocal modeling (check out pavarobotti if you are interested) don't get it 100% on the nose.
That said, a lot of very passionate and hard working people dedicate their lives to research. Like I said, it's not 100%, but I don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water. There is some utility in thinking about the physical moving parts of the voice. It's all a balancing act and I'm hoping to balance myself out.
