H.e.r. was her rebrand. She disappeared after not gaining much traction releasing music under Gabi Wilson, then started releasing EPs as H.e.r. with her identity hidden, the mystery created a buzz. She revealed herself a year or 2 after releasing those EPs.

She’s also one of the last artists that got artist development via the labels. They’ve been developing her since she was 16. This is something that the labels did back in the 90s/early 2000s to artists they signed.

She first emerged as Gabi Wilson, but didn't have much traction. She rebranded herself as H.E.R. where she covered her face (hair or sunglasses) or only showed her silhouette. With every project / album she showed a little bit more physically. Her music is always very much "exposed" though. H.E.R. is a drummer, guitarist, and pianist. Many have compared her live performances to Prince (due to instruments she pulls out) and Lauryn Hill (vocals and vulnerability).
EDIT: Fun fact, H.E.R. also has a line of sunglasses lol. She promotes them on her Instagram every now and then 😎

If you listen to the lyrics of the first few songs, you will notice that H.E.R.'s vocal performance was most likely an artistic choice to set the vibe and tone of what she is singing about. "Feel A Way" is like a warning call to the person she is in a relationship with that she doesnt like how they are treating her and devaluing her feelings and emotions. The low registry and focus on the lower vibrato really highlights the feeling of that track - especially since they are singing a stripped live version of the song for Tiny Desk ❤
I really think H.E.R. is a musical genius, and she's just getting started! ❤❤❤ I wouldn't be surprised if she became an EGOT (she's already got three of the four).
I would love to hear Dad’s favorite ‘reacted to’ songs over the past year and if there’s any that he regularly listens to since doing a reaction video….like a best of 2023 or something. That would be great!

Her second album is also very good and she takes a lot of inspo from Lauryn Hill. It's an incredible homage. I got to see her live and she is a instrumentalist as much as she is a singer.
My absolute favorite song by H.E.R is Damage. It’s a great example of good RnB music imo. I would love to see you both check out that song/music video!

You need some more male singers that have major talent as well. One of my favorites is an artist named Joe. He had his height in the 90s and early 2000s. A pioneer for collaborating with rappers. “ I Wanna Know” is a great place to start.

First time I've seen your dad not really enjoy the artist. I think he just loves Erykah, Lauren type ladies and that is ok with me❤❤❤
He heard singers like Lauryn and Jill Scott that can emote when they sing and really blow. I like HER songs to chill and vibe too, but it's not going to take dad on a musical journey where he can experience highs and lows for hours. New singers don't really go out of a certain range and do vocal acrobatics. Not knocking the new generation, just not gonna get singers that stand flat footed and belt.

@@ericaking4026 That's what CoCo from SWV was trying to explain. People thought she was hating, but she came from an era when vocalists blew like Whitney in their sleep. The songs are empty and don't excite or leave you wanting more. The singers now follow the same formula, are repetitive, and need distractions to cover for songs that make you nod off, especially if you're in a non-sober state.

I believe H.E.R. Gaby is first of all a musician, playing several instruments, writing music and when writing a song it might happen that the vocal performance is not as important, meaning is not supposed to come first place as it's about the music. The delivery in the first part being almost like spoken word, I like that too, it's like speaking your mind and easy to listen to it. I think she's a great musician with a good voice, overall a great singer too.. which is perfect for me(as not a fan of great voices with mediocre music)

Need you bad her first Jasmine Sullivan's first single is in my opinion not only a great introduction to her but a great harkening back to the old reggae sound and her Jamaican Roots as well.
Need U Bad, is a great song, however, Jasmine Sullivan, doesn't have any Jamaican roots. Pepa from Salt N Pepa, is the one speaking with the Jamaican accent and it was Missy and Timbaland's idea to use a reggae beat that Jazmine Sullivan was a little weary about because she didin't really listen reggae music nor did she ever sing to a reggae beat before.
