  • "No retreat, no surrender, that is Spartan Law"
An iconic film that is hilariously inaccurate, but I still love to watch it!
At the age of 7, a Spartan boy now comes under the direct control of the city of Sparta until his time of death. The boys left home to live in barracks, in an ancient boarding school known as 'Agoge'. The aim of this system primarily was to develop physical strength and were spurred on to fight one another. This brutal yet effective system created the greatest infantry ever known in the Ancient Greek world, Spartiates. Literally badass hoplites. I like that Leonidas says “In the end, a Spartans true strength is the warrior next to him” and this is what ultimately determines the effective of a phalanx. In the end, their rigid archaic system and way of life is what paved the way for their decline.
A Spartan had to follow their law otherwise face disownment from Sparta, even a King such as Pausanias of Sparta during the Corinthian War was forced to flee Sparta after facing trial for retreating from the battle of Haliartus. When Lycurgus, the legendary founder of Spartan Law envisioned a true Spartan, King Leonidas I was what he'd pictured. This is why king Leonidas I and his 300 Spartans during the battle of Thermopylae in 480BC were instant legends when word got back to Sparta and the Greek world about their sacrifice due to Spartan Messenger, Aristodemus of Sparta (David Wenham). This was consolidated in the writing of Herodotus in the Fifth Century BC. It's interesting to state that because he didn't die with his fellow Spartans at Thermopylae, he was branded a coward until his death at the Battle of Plataea in 479BC. This was the case for two other messengers, Pantities and Eurytus.
The Persian War is my favourite war of the Ancient Greek period. These 300 hand-picked Spartans were the personal bodyguards to King Leonidas as the Spartan army could not leave for war during a religious festival occurring in Sparta at that time. The 7,000 Greek allies at Thermopylae bought time for the rest of the Greek states to be ready for what was to come for mainland Greece. Due to the superior skill and Phalanx warfare, the battle ensued for 3 days until on the third, Greek scouts reported that a local man, Ephialtes had sold out to the Persians a way around the mountain. It was King Leonidas, 300 Spartans, and roughly an estimated 1200 Thespians, Helots, and Thebans who stayed behind in the mountain pass to defend the Greek retreat on a suicide mission effectively. Later at the battle of Plataea, the Spartans would command the land forces of the allied Greek City States to victory and end Xerxe's dominating presence in Greece.

@@misteromega5354 You pitiful people who don't read history, the origin of the rebellion was started by the Greek barbarians and Darius punished them. Second, you haven't read the sources yet, don't make too much claims. The phalanx or phalanx was a type of war that originated in ancient Greece, which was later adopted and used by the Roman armies. The phalanx was said in the way that the soldiers formed rows in the shape of large squares and the soldiers stuck together and placed their shields regularly in front of each other, and the soldiers of the second and third rows and... pulled their shields over their heads. And so that in all parts of these squares, the backs of the soldiers were facing inward, and the soldiers in the front ranks were pointing their sharp and long spears outwards, so that even the best and most elite forces of the ancient world could not break through the phalanx. to create The only way to counter this method was to widen the battlefield and separate the soldiers forming the phalanx. However, it did not seem that the Greek soldiers could compete with the experienced and elite soldiers of the Persian EmpireAfter several hours of hard fighting, the Iranians were able to penetrate into the heart of the Greek army, but the flanks of the Iranian army could not compete with the Greek phalanxes, and this caused the defeat of the Iranian army, so that the Greek army moved from its flanks to the rear of the Iranian army. and it was possible that the Iranian army would be encircled by the enemy, and this caused a wave of fear to prevail among the Iranian soldiers, and the soldiers started to retreat arbitrarily without paying attention to their commanders.Taking your own city illiterate is a decisive victory, if you had a decisive victory, you should have killed Darius the Great, which you failed to do. As I said, I sent for an illiterate like you, if you don't know the science of war, go read. In some wars, the real winner is not determined, but Iran marches towards its goals. He arrived and punished the Greeks and we won in the heart of our army and in the flanks of the GreeksGreece, a country with thousands of islands, was of no use to the Achaemenians. They took the whole place because it has no resources. With the victory of the Greeks in the flanks, the center of the Iranian army was also forced to retreat and the Persians began to flee towards the sea. The Greeks chased the Iranian forces to the coast, but they could not prevent them from boarding the ship, so the Persians boarded the ships and headed towards the sea and tried to reach Athens, which was now without guards. But this plan of theirs also failed because the Greeks rushed to the city. After this incident, Datis, the commander of the Iranian army, returned the rest of his forces to Asia. As written by the Greeks, this war will cast a shadow on the name of Iran in history, because until this time the Persians would come out victorious wherever they went, and the mere name of the Medes or the Persians would make the Greeks panic. But regarding the retreat of the Iranians, it can be said that this retreat was not an escape but a war policy. It is as if during the war they informed the Iranian commanders that Athens was empty of soldiers, so they They decided to withdraw from this field and planned to move towards Athens by ships and by water. The evidence shows that if, according to Herodotus, the Greek army had defeated the Persians, then after their retreat, they should have gone after them and thrown them all into the sea, which did not happen, or even Some were captured. As he said, the Iranian army has boarded a ship, and boarding that ship requires a large number of horses and people, order and time.As a result, after they retreated, they should have gone after them and thrown them all into the sea, which did not happen, or even captured some of them. As he said, the Iranian army has boarded the ship, and boarding the ship requires a large number of horses and people, order and time, and if the Greeks were chasing the Iranians, they could not have fully boarded the ship. to beAnd those 7 ships that have been looted belong to those killed in the war, which are left empty. Therefore, all of Herodotus' statements on this matter have been rejected. These contradictions in the words of Herodotus and other historians of the Old Testament have caused historians to compare his writings more to legends and epic stories than to documented history. As Ni Bor (one of the prominent historians of the modern age) says: "The writings of the Greeks about this war and other wars between Iran and Greece are more similar to poetry, myth-telling and storytelling than history writing. »

I don't think people really understand what happened. People with ideals trained their whole life to defend what they were believing in, to defend freedom.... What is happiness if not the ability to do whatever it takes to defend what we love? They were aware of this... They went against tens of thousands of Persians, with no fear... Do u think Persians were evil and Spartans the good ones? No, there is no such think in this world. The Persians did this because ruled by a tyrant they were afraid of dying if they opposed Xerxes ... They made their choice and the Spartans knew it, they didn't have to understand them by letting Sparta fall.
TODAY IS THE SAME! weak people do what governments want to impose, as QR code or every choice they want to decide for us... Our freedom....They also go against the people who oppose the government, in order to have the consent of many.. Spartans are more like an ideal now, a spartan is everyone who is ready to fight for his freedom, AGAINST ALL ODDS! that's why Spartans never die, they are just missing in action...
