People don't understand that this is not an adaptation of historical events. This is an adaptation of Miller's comic called '300', which was inspired by the original '300' (1962) movie, which was inspired by the Battle of Thermopylae and the 300 Spartans who fought there
Shame its just a comic adaptation. The quotes are awesome but I'd love a more accurate version.

He was always suspected of murdering his way onto the throne. So thats why he volunteered to face the persians. He had already had a son so he felt like his duty was done and he could prove to his people he was never in it for himself.

The ancient monument (memorial) that was built at Thermopiles (Hotgates the place of the battle, which you can still find there) literally has this last sentence encarved in Ancient Greek of course. The number of enemies Leonidas and his 300 Spartans stod against was exagerated in this movie. Instead of a million soldiers, it was somewhere between 170 000 - 360 000.
But that is still an astoundingly amazing feat, considering he was outnumbered by AT THE VERY LEAST 567 soldiers to 1, by one of the largest and most powerful empires in ancient history.
This man is a freaking legend.
The Spartans never ask how many there are but where they are . And that is a fact.

However, as the majority of the greek army retreated, leoidas, his 300 spartans, some helots, and 1,100 boeotians remained behind supposedly because retreating would defy spartan law and custom

I know I saw this in some history book about Sparta.
This line is simply legendary because at first you think that the 300 gave their lifes for the Spartan law,but it's far from that.This line is actually an irony,the fallen Spartans blame the laws and the politicians that only sent 300 men to defend Greece from an enemy with 100.000-1.000.000 soldiers.

i know 300 isnt the most accurate depiction but it does capture the struggle of the greek city states to remain indepedent and the battle of Thermopylae helped established the western identity
Yes and no, expesialy sparta fight for there indipendends but included in that was ther ehegomonie (and more ore less direct slavery) of the sourronding polis. So to 'fight' back one (big) empire of overule, was defending there own 'empire' of overule home. So it wasnt 'the greeks' wich fight for 'freedom' but indeed it was some greeks fight for some greeks freedom, in rule over other (greeks).
But the movie is just a masterpiece and ofc the real war was very very important for greek history and so for our western identity, that without doubt.
If I was a politician in Greece I would have been all about that “make Greece great again” anthem.
I really love ancient history. This movie is probably one of the most inspirational movies about history I have seen in a long time. Good work on showing the most inspirational parts on the movie!

When a king fight besides his men. Its raw power than to sit on a throne and to make them die for you. That is a true king to his people. Fight like one of them not against them. A few kings thinks they have power but by pointing they are hiding. Hes connected by them to show them and guide them and give them strengt.

I don't mean exactly like this and train with sword and shield. I mean the strong male spirit, the urge to serve to something bigger than you are. Not chase pleasures and try to fuck as much women as possible without any strong meaning in life.

Watched this movie hundreds of times with my dad as a kid and rewatched countless times. It has always pissed me off how he misses just barely with his spear oh my god I’ve been mad since I was like 10
