Obiwan was the one constant in his life he did not feel betrayed by him. He trusted obi wan to be his enemy and I think this gave him comfort.
it gave him anger, fuelled by kenobi only.
I wouldn't say he trusted him. It was a simple revenge plot between them, even although maul came to hate the very thing he is he knew he was gonna die regardless

The saddest thing about it:
It wouldn’t have stopped at kenobi
It wouldn’t have stopped at Ashoka
It wouldn’t even have stopped at palpatine
No level of vengeance could have filled the void of feeling wronged that maul had. Nothing could’ve brought him the closure he felt he deserved.
He was based
He was a narcissist
His goal wasn't just revenge, but ultimately to gain as much power as possible, which is the goal of the Sith. I think had the original sequel trilogy idea been implanted instead of that abomination we got from Disney, we would have seen a somewhat different Maul, less fueled by hatred and more by a desire for regaining power he once held onto.
@@teddybrooks5836 yes he was supposed to be the head of an underground criminal syndicate.
"There is no solace in vengeance. There is no purpose in hatred. Because one day There will come a time when you've killed every last thing in the world, and when that time comes, the only person left to hate will be yourself"
That "He will avenge us" hits more different than I think any of us can understand. Maul is a masterpiece of a character.
its the fact that revenge and avenging are different, saying avenge means he finally, at least partially, let go of his hate in his final moments.
“Dad can you tell me about the tragedy of Plagueis or Anakin/Vader?”
Me: “actually son.... have you heard about the tragedy of Darth Maul the lost ? It’s a story neither the sith nor Jedi will tell”
That would actually be a great story to tell. A tale full of sadness and heartbreak and suffering. A man used by everybody and discarded like a worn-away tool. For a time he gains some prominence in the criminal underworld, but then he ends up walking away from it, for whatever reasons, and searching for the one that had first defeated him, not to settle an old score, but to end the game, maybe, with some semblance of dignity.

This is true, and only Star Wars,my brother!
I didn't even put together that he's holding Maul the same way he held Qui-Gon way back when it all started. Damnit I think I'm crying.
I haven't realized he tried to use on Obi-Wan the same trick he used to kill Qui-Gon (the surprise hit in the face) and it was what led to his end, since Obi ducked and sliced through it. Nice. Goes to show my favorite thing about Kenobi; Doesn't matter his age or rank, dude always learning and evolving. It's also one of the differences between them - They are both survivors, each one dealt damages to the other, and both lost everything - But Kenobi survived by acceptance and moving on, while Maul survived through his lust for revenge, what kept him perpetually chained in the past.
@@DesolatedChild018 Theres a whole dissection and discussion about this last duel. Firstly, historically its the most "accurate" representation of a duel the universe has ever depicted.
Historical duels between samurai, or really any fencing or bladefighting, really only lasts one exchange, maybe two or three blows max. Two samurai would circle one another, changing stances, looking for an opening, the perfect moment to strike. When the exchange came, there would only be one chance.
And in this duel, Everything leading up to that last fateful exchange was a mind battle, and Obi Wan won before the blow even fell, because he GOADED Darth Maul into doing what he did.
Notice how Obi Wan adopts his signature Soresu style stance.
Then to mock him Maul switches stances to the same one he used before he killed Qui-Gon.
To call his bluff and goad him in, he switches to Qui-Gons Ataru, taking the same stance Qui-Gon used before Maul killed him.
And Maul did not switch his stance, but you can see the realization in his eyes, and the anger, and he fell right into Obi Wans trap.
Besides the fact they are now in the open, which is where Ataru shines, Obi Wan learned from watching Maul kill his master, and spent a lot of time studying, not just that final fight, but Ataru in general. He tricked Maul into making the exact same move again, but instead of falling for the feint that killed Qui Gon, he cuts straight down the center, ending mauls life. Maul had just enough time to realize he wasn't just fighting "A rat in the desert". This is a Jedi "Master" One of the most accomplished and intelligent Jedi masters of the recent era. A Jedi master who survived Order 66. And a Jedi Master on guard duty, which means hes protecting someone extremely important. He totally underestimated and misjudged his opponent.
@@Cryogenius333 In general I've viewed that as Maul's biggest weakness. In every fight he loses he's underestimating someone or trying to look ahead to another fight and start preparing when he really needed to focus on the moment he was in. It's a nice contrast to the idea behind the Jedi as well, since they are supposed to live in the moment by contrast. You can even see when he starts beating these moments, against some of his fights with Obi-Wan when he first returns or against Ahsoka during rebels, where he's really intent on proving himself and showing he isn't as weak as many believe, he does incredibly well. Then he fights Kanan, or fights Ahsoka when he wanted to draw in Anakin and Obi-Wan, and he starts trying to accomplish other objectives because the fight is 'beneath him' and he gets punked by the enemy.
And maul tried to use the same move that he used to kill qui gon
@@FPSfanatic96 Maul is a classic example of someone suffering from severe personality disorders.
Hes been beaten broken and abused his entire life, he got cut in half. Hes half insane.
After spending his entire life getting the shit kicked out of him in preparation to be Palpatines Apprentice, Palpatine dropped him like a moldy potato. Hes never been "good enough" He's a being of pure rage and pain. Hes never going to think things through, and every moment looking forward is purely in anticipation of the moment he gets to face Obi Wan, while every other moment is spent looking back. so in a way you are correct. He never lived in the moment. Always pacing like a caged animal, raring for blood waiting for the next door to open
"The Sith took everything from me."
You could feel Maul wasn't talking about the Sith. That anger and contempt was aimed at Palpatine.
But also the concept of his involvement in the sith taking everything from him. Imo he was referring to the concept of the sith, not a sith or some sith in particular.
@Tate Ullock yeah I agree with that, I was just saying how this line isn't directed at a singular entity or group. Working with the sith (concept, not Palpatine) resulted in the loss of his brother, his body, basically everything. To clear it up, Palpatine didn't cut his legs off for example, he lost his legs to obi wan because he was a sith.
@@Plasans how did Maul end up with Palpatine? Did he kidnapped Maul or did Talzin gave him?
@@kentinson1670 I haven't read many comics so I'm not sure, I think he was kidnapped as a kid. He might have been handed over by the night sisters tho
@@kentinson1670 yes, he was kidnapped by Palpatine at a young age. Yet, I feel disappointed because in this serie, they could have done a similar thing without having to resurect Maul. They could have done it for Grievous, so we could have a wonderful vilain instead of a moron.
@@Confused_surprise I would certainly say grievous has more charm and personality in clone wars than in the prequels (to be honest all the characters do).

@@benhamilton3671 Well betrayal is key to the rule of two, so if you take someone wanting to kill their old master as betryal than every sith who has lived since darth bane has betrayad the sith.
Love the "He will avenge us." line. As Obi-Wan holds him in his coming death, Maul realises Obi-Wan was never his enemy. They were both tricked by Palpatine. He was tricked by Palpatine into focusing on wrong person.
The scene of Maul screaming at the clones about how they don't know what they're doing, followed by Palpatine smiling is so well done. Nobody ever would have listened to him because of who he was, and yet it's because of who he was that he knows so much. I also love that when Maul tells Kenobi that Luke will avenge them, you can see Obi-Wan grimace. Even after everything Maul had done to him, I think a part of him hoped that he would make an effort to see the light. But instead Maul saw it as just another opportunity for revenge, and it broke Kenobi's heart
It is an ethereal line sometimes between revenge and justice at times and Kenobi knows that. I think part of that grimace is that he knows what he feels and what Maul feels on the matter of Palpatine is only separated by a little uncontrolled personal rage.
Palpatine hurt them both in many of the same ways, and their lives have taken some of the same trajectories. But the defining difference between a Jedi and a Sith is a Jedi acts for the greater good while trying to keep a leash on those more primal aspects of their being.
So in Maul's last breath, Kenobi may have well seen some of himself in Maul.

in all of the movie industry in general in my opinion
I love how Maul was built as a throwaway character, literally just a man who grunted, killed a jedi, used 2 sabers and promptly died. But they injected life into this character, so have him blossom form nothing to a bigger character than Grevious. But despite all that, they built his character on being a throwaway. He was rejected and cast aside but he just kept coming back, fueled only by his hatred, hence the name of this video. Truly an amazing character.
Yeah its amazing how Maul went from a "Who cares he is dead" to "Damn, Maul is such an amazing character, its insane how much character he has after The Clone Wars & Rebels". Hes one of my top 5 favourite for sure.

Not that being bigger than Canon Grievous is that hard.

The fact that he said that he will avenge us is just truly amazing, he could’ve said something hateful for his last words but he chose to die in forgiving arms and put their differences aside for the future, Maul is a legend
It cast the final stark difference between Kenobi and Maul. His dying words were true of the Sith, revenge. Whereas Kenobi believed in restoring the balance, selfish vs selfless.
He never understood the Jedi, he was simply brainwashed by the Sith.
Even at his end, he couldn't break free of the torment, of the damage of the Sith.
A remarkable bit of character writing
@@thesenate3728 Definitely. Although, I like to think that there’s a sort of light side spin to it; it gives Maul hope for the future after his own death, which to me isn’t a trait you’d normally find in someone saturated in the dark side. I love Maul’s character so much, such a tragic individual. I think that in the moment that he was dealt a mortal blow, he knew that this was how he was meant to die, and he was content in knowing that Kenobi was protecting the new hope for the galaxy.
and we know it means something, he had survived on pure spite before, he could have done the same again
I like though that when he says it, Obi Wan almost seems to.. accept it as his way. Like he knew that was how Maul was to find peace. And in the end, Obi Wan was OK with that.
He is one of the best star wars characters ever
2 years since this was made and I still listen to it regularly
But it hits the same everytime
same here

Can we just appreciate the amount of time and skill it took to construct this masterful representation of the most interesting character in star wars
It’s insane how a character who was introduced more than 20 years ago and had like 10 minutes of screen-time, transformed and evolved into one of the most in-depth, deep and tragic characters in all of Star Wars. Maul goes down as one of my all time favourite characters in Star Wars.
proof, that Dave Filoni should be for Star Wars, what Kevin Feige is the the MCU.
His duel with Obi-Wan from Rebels is one of my favorite scene in the franchise, next to Luke looking into the Twin Suns
20 years ago? no, no Phantom Menace didn't come out that long--holy shit I feel old

Read his comics
Everyone point out how good maul and kenobi are as characters but nobody points out how exeptionally good the edit is
True
What got me was how little actually needed to be edited in that final fight scene.
The writers/story boarders for SW Rebels knew EXACTLY what they were doing there. Then Porg the Sith Lord comes around, does this, and turns a nice meal into the best goddamn food my eyes and ears have ever tasted.
@@WindWalker666 if you can taste something with your eyes you know it's good

the fighting transitions from old to new were flawless. loved it
Maul deserves his own show, but it needs to be rated R. Disney would need to introduce something like "Disney after dark" to showcase things they would normally shy away from.
Excellent idea.
Mauls hallway scene rated r would be mental
Maul seriously needs his own R-rated film or tv-MA series or something so we can perfectly show his horrific origin
That editing around all the light saber hits is art
it's even in time with the music ... masterpiece!
I was watching this whole video and I thought it was quite good. But when the lightsaber fight edit came in I literally got goosebumps, it's simply perfect!
On poi2
On God
Bro the editing is flawless. Props.
The Duality of Maul and Kenobi is honestly one of the best ones in all of media history.
Maul embodies the 'perfect' sith. He is fueled by anger, by rage, it's what drives him. His desire for revenge not only against Kenobi but also against Sidious towards the end of his life. He's not the perfect Sith, he's not all-powerful, but at his core, he represents the core Sith values perfectly and is probably my favorite example of a true Sith.
Kenobi on the other hand is the perfect Jedi. No quotes there. We all know why. Saw his master and lover die, saw his apprentice and best friend turn to the dark side, yet was never truly tempted. He remained a Jedi every step of the way. He harbors no hatred for Maul, and he showed understanding and compassion when he understood where Maul came from.
Also, something that I noticed watching this video, which I loved. Maul's Sith Eyes. A sith fully embarrassing the Dark Side has his pupils turn Yellow (unless you're Sidious and learned to not show them). Maul's are always bright golden in hatred. Except once: His death. I thought it would be a cool detail and then I noticed it, when he died in the hands of Kenobi, his eyes left that golden rage and had some green return to them. His death is the moment where he was finally at peace, and made peace with Kenobi. Fucking hell I love that character
wow just noticed the eye thing
You have a point. But have not all night brothers yellow glowing eyes?

@@TiagoDdA No they have green you can see at about 4:00
Maul’s response to Kenobi saying “if you judge yourself by your desire to possess, dominate… then you have nothing” is “ and what do you have?” is simple yet powerful.
One of the most painful and powerful quotes i have ever heard " you cannot imagine the depths i would go to stay alive fueled by my singular hatred for you."
God his voice is so soothing. So calm yet full of rage and passion. So smooth yet so brittle. Badass character
Yep Sam Witwer nails the performance
420th like, fuckyeh 😏
Yeah maul actually reminds me of the joker and dear God there so simlar
that's exactly why I love his voice too. it's so full of every kind of emotion.
I read British instead of Brittle and started laughing 😄 but yes agreed
That "he will avenge us" was powerful
I know Maul was to far gone and was just seeking the end to his suffering but Obi-wan forgiveness and love showed him how powerful the Light truly is
I would not say the light showed him more like Obi-Wan had gone the same pain has maul and understands what maul was coming from so when he killed maul he held him in his arms to show they may have been enimes but they understand the pain on both sides that is why he asked "is he the chose one" because only the chosen one can bring balance to the force and aniken did but now his son Luke must make sure it all ends
I like how maul is ALWAYS seeking Revenge for himself but he realized in the end EVERYONE was a victim of Sidious, and everyone should be avenged
I love maul so much probs my favourite character
@@flamefoxtrot6982 nah I think like was the chosen one but they didn’t know at the time
@@Rapozinha-66 but he meant Darth vader will avenge us

This is by far a masterpiece. I know how much time it takes to make an edit like this and how much thought and understanding of the topic it requires to deliver such an engaging video. There are millions of Star Wars edits on CZcams and I have seen plenty of them throughout the years but this one is definitely one of the best ones I have ever seen if not the best.
The sad thing is Darth Maul had no choice, Anakin Did.
Actually, Filoni states how Maul keeps choosing the life that makes him suffer and had he learned to let to, he wouldn't be failing.
@@alexdeghost2729 that's just the thing is he can't let go he is so filled with hatred and has been suffering for his entire life that he just keeps choosing the only thing he knows.

@@alexdeghost2729 ok anakin lover did you forget he was taken his brother was killed he has nonthing literally nonthing left just anger and that fire was overtaking him
This “He will avenge us” at the end hits so deep because he realizes that both, him and Obi-Wan, have lost everything because of Darth Vader and the Emperor. Both stories are similar in a certain way and at the end he realizes that they are allied, even tho they have one of the deepest and longest nemesis-relationships ever created. The only hope for both of them is Luke Skywalker.
I think he was talking about himself and savage opress
@@muriloxavier5776 I think he’s talking about everyone who fell victim to the empire
I saw a cool discussion about that line where perhaps maul was referring to anakin and obi wan said yes still wanting to believe he can be redeemed. Flimsy Ik but I found it interesting
No I think just the emperor. Palpating was the root to both of there suffering.
As a wise man once said "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"
That “He will avenge us” was one of the saddest line in my life
In the final moments of Mauls mind he felt the connection of their lives. The difference between Obi Wan and everyone else is he was actually not betraying anyone. He had simply fought for his master and even went on to be betrayed. The dark and light side or two completely different tables but Maul and Kenobi felt the same pain. Mentally and emotionally of course.

That line and "I´m no jedi". Simple, beatiful and power
YOUR ALL GOING TO DIE, YOU DON't KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING", this shook me, every time I heard this line, from Clone Wars season 7 to edits like this, every single time, all of this time, Maul knew what was happening, he TRIED to stop it, but no one believed him until everything fell a part. Everyone one was a puppet, a puppet for Palpatine, ever single thing that happened in the Clone Wars was CONTROLLED my Palpatine.
Maul: He… will… avenge us...
Disney: Well, yes, but actually no.
@Ryan Nowatski yup fu.... sh.. that Disney did
The Sequels are bullshit and Rey is a terrible protagonist. The prequels , Originals, and the Clone Wars series and Rebels series are GOATED and it all makes sense and keeps the story connected
I just wanna point something out here. Disney was already in charge of Rebels when that piece of dialogue happened, so Disney literally created this entire episode.
Only to make it worthless with the Rise of Mary Sue.
@@yanniisrael3173 I agree
@Ryan Kowalski; You know Kathleen Kennedy? She’s one of the people that helped make The Last Airbender live action movie.
That alone should explain everything.
“He will avenge us” That hit hard.
‘revenge is not the Jedi way’
But it was not the Jedi way that bested Darth Vader.
It was the Jedi way that redeemed Anakin Skywalker, but before that it was the darkness that devoured Vader.
Serious Sketch
I don’t think he wanted to.
I think he just wanted something to end.
Be it the hate for the man that cut him down from the future he dreamed of, or his life so the pain would stop.
Maul’s path was a dark and weary one. He lost everyone he cared about, all his ambitions shattered as he was left to wallow in the dark.
I think at the end he was tired of it all and wanted to finish his part with one last defiant baring of teeth.
@Serious Sketch great take. insightful.
@Serious Sketch Nice writing.
@Serious Sketch That line I think shows more the bond between Kenobi and Maul. He didn't say "he will avenge me" or "you" he said "us"
It moves me to tears everytime I see Maul telling Kenobi that the chosen one will avenge them, to me it shows he finally let go of his hate and despair and was finally at peace, he obviously wouldnt come back as a force ghost, because he'd not known the technique, nor do I think he'd want to become one, just happy that Maul didnt a die sith or even a jedi just as a man coming to peace with the end, letting go of anything that bound him here
One of the best characters ever period. The way he is written in clone wars really evaluated him way further than the first episode could have ever done. I genuinely feel absolutely sad for him and his arc.
The saddest thing about Maul is that he doesn’t hate Obi-Wan. He just latches onto him thinking that he hates him because he knows that he will never be able to get revenge on the man he truly despises, Palpatine.
I think this is what he really wanted to happen anyway. If he had won, he would be even more miserable than he was before.
Short of killing the one that actually wronged him, this was his perfect end. He had his final confrontation and he found peace. He was relieved of his hatred.
@@thegoodolddays9193, I'd go as far to say that in this end, though it was only for a moment, he found his salvation. He was dominated and learned what hatred was, he was indoctrinated to live an incredibly hateful life. He was bested in combat by Obi. Therefore probably respecting him as an opponent, thus why he won't kill him. He never truly hated Obi Wan. He found redemption in realizing this.
Redemption from the darkside. Like Obi Wan said, Maul was forced into this. Indoctrinated. Which is what makes his final end matter so much more. Instead of going to what the Jedi might call hell, or some sort of punishment in that kind of afterlife. Maul's soul may have been redeemed after finally letting go of his hatred. As Maul said. "He will avenge us".
Maul never wanted to kill Obi Wan. He just wanted a reason to hold onto his hatred. When Maul was defeated, Obi didn't actually land a killing blow. Or so it doesn't seem like it.
Instead, it just seems that Maul simply gave up his will to fight because in that moment he found respite and redemption in realizing that Obi Wan was protecting the chosen one. You can see it in his face and hear it in his voice.
The animators, directors and the one voice actor of Maul. They all did such an incredible job. Maul was the only Character of any show, movie, and anime I've ever seen with THIS much Character development. Unfortunately there will never be another Character in any media or maybe in any book that has such a deep level development.
@@thegoodolddays9193 I completely agree
I completely agree with this statement is very obvious that this is the case especially when you look at how he deals with Ezra. he's so full of hate but he doesn't have a direction for it that he can do anything about.
(Star Wars novice) Is there any way to train and grow stronger in your respected force practices? Or are where you are to an extent? What I’m asking is could he have trained and eventually been able to kill Palpentine or was he always out of his reach? Because he truly feared Palpentine and once they fought in the clone wars with Savage on his side I understood why
Ive seen people interpret "He will avenge us" as like "he will avenge the Sith" or something rather more negative
But I persoanally think he means "he will avenge us ALL" I actually believe that as hes dying in the arms of his sword enemy, he feels some kind of kinship with Obi Wan and the Jedi.
Born from the fact that he hates Palpatine so much.
Palpatine fucked EVERYTHING up for everyone, so Luke killing him would avenge everyone.
Its still NEGATIVE in the sense that even as hes dying he only thinks of revenge.
But I choose to believe that he was like "Palpatine sucks and we all have reason to hate him, Luke will avenge us all, you, me, my brother etc."
I just love SAD things.
And the fact that for decades the only motivator, the only constant in Mauls life has been finding Kenobi, hurting him and torturing him.
And then where does he die? In Obi Wans arms, his ENEMY, the mf he HATES.
And Obi Wan showing kindness to Maul in a way, this dude who killed the woman he loved, who has killed countless innocents and tortured him and tried to kill him.
But Obi Wan still refuses to lower himself to those levels. He could have let Maul face plant into the sand. He didnt.
And he closes Mauls eyes once hes dead. Which imo is a sign of respect towards the dead (at least in my culture)
Idk its just so cool.
Maul is beautifully written. Definitely a tragic villain
When Maul screamed “Let me die, you all are going to die” my blood was chilled
Yeah that part is just haunting, it doesn't help that the entire season, the "end of it all" is taking place when none of the characters we see in this season know that it's going on. I had a constant gut wrenching feeling of dread and impending Doom during this season.
