As a long time fan of the novel (I read it in high school and its been my favorite book ever since) I hope they don't try to make a season 2. This mini series was fantastic as it is. As much as I loved it, if they try to continue it they'll only be making things up. I know the novel is based on the real life rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and future stories could be taken from that, but I feel like something would be lost if they tried to continue James Clavell's story. He did write an entire series set in this timeline that they could pull from. If they were going to follow up on Shogun, I would recommend they pull from that.

If there is a season two, it would probably be based on one of the other books that happens in different time periods.
The historical parallel pretty much ends shortly after the series ends. After the battle of Sekigahara, Tokugawa took the role of Shogun, eliminated his rivals and got the remaining lords in line. Eventually the Heir is eliminated, either by design or by coincidence, removing any potential rival.
And the only thing "Blackthorne" would do is implement a modernization of the ships, which the real life Tokugawa did by building up the red seal fleet that used modern European designs.
But beyond that the rise to shogun brings over 300 years of "peace", so there would not be a whole lot of drama to build off of for a season 2.

  • @doublep1980

This series proves what a difference good writing/ direction makes.
Just compare Anna Sawai in ''Monarch'', where she was really bad and then watch her in ''Shogun'', where she's giving an amazing performance. It's like watching 2 completely different actresses!
If FX is smart, they could adapt some of James Clavell's other novels like ''Gaijin'', which takes place 250 years after the events of ''Shogun'' and features a character who is Lord Toranaga's descendant.

For me! The new Shogun mini-series started out strong but kind of weakened by the end. It was good, but I still think the original 1980 Shogun mini-series is much better by far. How do I know? It's more detailed. It's more in depth. It has more action, less gore though. Also, I own the 1980 Shogun series. I've seen it at least 10 times. It's a great series with the ability to want to watch it again at some point. The new series I've seen once and I really don't feel like I want to watch it again. If you thought Anna Sawaii played Mariko well, and she did. Yoko Shimada played Mariko much better. Also in the new series it was more focused on Mariko and how she was the key to everything. In the original series. Blackthorn and Toranaga were the main focus with actual battles. I do think the new series is good and they left the end kind of open to a second season and they should do it! The final thing I'll say is if you love the series and you want more. Watch the original. You'll get more out of it.

The story arc contained in the novel this show was based on has played out, it's done, so I don't see a season two at all.
As for this version, I have mixed emotions. On the one hand, it was cinematically excellent with superb visuals. On the other, I got a slight sense of style over content as I felt the heart of the story, a love story, was largely absent. What I feel gave the book and the original 1980 mini series such emotional resonance, was the love story at its heart. yes, Blackthorne was in love with Mariko in this version, but you'd hardly know it until near the end of the show. It was hinted at more than realized.
Parts of this version more closely matched the novel compared to the original mini series and others departed from it. Why, for example, change the names of some key characters? Fuji instead of Fujiko?
We also didn't get a sense of Blackthorne's struggle to learn the language. I was quite shocked when in one episode he reeled off some pretty good Japanese without us, the audience, seeing his efforts.
I also felt there was a touch of wokeness in the way Mariko was portrayed. Unlike the highly respectful and deferential Mariko of the book and original mini series, this one was almost sometimes cold, rude and argumentative. Not the way women interacted with men back then. Also, Mariko's English was far too perfect with not a trace of a Japanese accent. Perhaps this was done for clarity, but it lacked credibility to me.
For me, despite the excellent visuals and elements closer to the novel, this version didn't emotionally resonate with me at all.

There is no season 2 as others pointed out. They did not leave it open for another season. It ends exactly how the book ends and the 80s adaption. They only way they could make a season 2 with the same characters is to write an original story. It's possible to create a series that say incorporates The Battle of Sekigahara as a selling point, but the rest would be Blackthorn building up trade and the persecution and murder of hundreds of Catholics as well as expelling all the foreigners except for Blackthorn and more Dutch. Lady Ochiba could feel it necessary to plot to overthrow the Toranaga Shogunate because she comes to believe that Yoshii Toranaga's son Sudara wants to kill her son. This is based on the real history with alterations. However, creating a compelling story from scratch is different from adapting one. Quite frankly, we do not need another season. Part of the reason it is so good is that is was a limited series.

This was always intended as a miniseries but beyond that this went through quite a bad period of development hell so I'm not sure the creators want to go through another 5+ years to do another even if they could come up with what would be a original story. This series, like the original one back in 1980 with Richard Chamberlain, wasn't meant for a follow up season. Both versions ended where the book Shogun ended.
This new adaptation is a self contained, single season "mini series" that concluded with Toranaga winning at Sekigahara and becoming Shogun by showing how his plan WAS going to play out, without actually showing it. The original did something similar through the narrator. Any new season would be drawn from historical events that took place outside of Clavell's novel as he never wrote a follow up to it. Not sure if they have any plans to do that.

I continue to recommend this creative team do its interpretation of _Lone Wolf and Cub_ as a sequel, given it has many themes related to those in _Shogun_ , is set in the Edo period that follows the events of _Shogun_ and would be pretty much a sure hit if done with the same care as _Shogun_ was.

Even though the show followed the Novel and a one time "Event". They could easy follow up with a season 2 if they wanted. Yes they wont have a Novel to follow in season 2, but if they respect the historical events for that period and make a season 2 that continue the Toranaga story. There is ALOT there. Just saw a documentary about the sekigahara Battle and what comes after that is Crazy. Lets just say the HEIR Ochibas Son gonna have a big roll to play in that when he grows up, and Ieyasu (Toranaga) has to ACT upon that.

The acting of Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Toranaga, Anna Kawaii as Mariko as Mariko and Naikaido Fumi as Lady Ochiba is brilliant and they fully deserve Emmy Awards. The production design and costumes were both era accurate and gorgeous and the cinematography texturally rich - all were feature film quality. Shogun is one of the very best series to be released this year and I highly recommend viewing it.

Definitely hoping for more absolutely I haven't enjoyed a show this much sense Vikings started out on History which I loved. I love the acting, characters, story, and depth from start to finish. If all the numbers come back as positive I don't see a reason not to get more even if it's based off one of the later books of the three book series.

Completely agree the best thing I’ve watched in ages & also loved how we had to wait each week but sorry to break the bad news according to an interview that Justin Marks gave they finished the series exactly where the book ends & they are leaving it as that as the creators loved how it ends leaving you wondering, even though I would love a season 2 the book series they are based on aren’t sequel books they are done in different eras of Japan so if they did they would either have to write a series based around the characters or just do the rest of the books in the different ages they are set. I think book 2 is based around 100 years later & one of the later books based around WWII

One minor nitpick I have is we did not get “The Battle of Sekigahara”.
I get it would have blown up their budget but if money were not a factor, it could have been awesome.

But that’s what Crimson Sky addressed. The only way a big battle similar to actual history would’ve happened is if Crimson Sky had failed.

Love both, I like the 1980 tv version better, had more time longer episodes, both are great. When it aired in 1980 over the course of I believe a week, it was a fever!

    • @williamegan6756
      @williamegan6756 Před měsícem

The 80s version deliberately amped up the role of Blackthorne at the expense of the other Japanese characters, thus creating a Western bias much stronger than what you get reading the book. It is therefore much less authentic and even a bit cringe in places. I still think it is a decent version, and their Mariko was excellent- but honestly, it is nowhere near as good as this newer series.

    “Season 2 please”
They made the right decision not to have season 2 because the story is over like in the source material. If they kept going, they would fail to maintain quality and then self-destruct like Game of Thrones.

Shogun is peak television. The persistent emotional pull without relying on over the top action is a testament to the amazing talent of the writing team.

Not normally in my sphere, but I checked this out. It managed to take the original series with Richard Chamberlain up a notch using less exposition. The series ended right were the book did, so I'm not sure if a season 2 would be viable without the source material. Tai Pan would be a good adaptation though, if made in the same style.

Fully agree. A 9/10 series for me. Exceptional. It's also so refreshing to see female characters done RIGHT. I don't expect a second season but who knows after the success of this one. They may tackle other source material of feudal Japan.

I watched the 80s version as a teenager and loved it. But this version is chef's kiss, with profound dialogue, a multilayered plot , astonishing and nuanced acting and very high quality production value with detailed sets and costumes...truly epic. It is most immersive and I consider it to be on the level of Lords of the Rings. It is a masterpiece.

The only Modern television shows I’ve watched and loved are The Bear on Fx and Ryan Johnson’s Poker face. Two excellent pieces of tv and I’m literally 21 years old. I haven’t been brainwashed to think that all of the garbage they put out is actually good. I’m currently watching a show that ran from 2002-2007 I believe called The shield. Something about tv from then is better than pretty much everything that’s made today.

It was a phenomenal series... from the look of the show, the costuming, the acting - and the fact it was an authentic representation of the period... i.e., Japanese people, speaking Japanese... no DEI inclusion for the sake of it!
Hopefully we get a season 2... although, I was gutted Mariko and Yabushige won't be in it - unless we get flashbacks.
