Hiroyuki Sanada is such a charismatic actor, too bad that Hollywood often gave him a role that somehow overshadowed by another character, even when his character is placed on the front of the poster like Mortal Kombat Scorpion

they didn't just speak Japanese. Sanada made sure they have people to help them to speak the actual court language of Japan at the time, which is very different than modern Japanese. It's like all of them speaking in Shakespearean English. Also the costume, mannerism, it's just like a NHK Taiga drama. This is so impressive that most Japanese are enjoying this production.

All this attention to detail but then they kinda ruin the illusion when they keep mentioning being fluent in portuguese, etc, but carry on talking in english. @@numberoftheword that was actually confusing af - he asks the translator how she got so good in Portuguese and then I was like, are they SUPPOSED to be speaking in Portuguese? rodrigues speaking with a spanish accent and then john speaking with a heavy English accent kinda contradicts them supposedly speaking Portuguese, unless that was intentional to let the audience know the characters are from Spain and England. but then John speaks to the other English sailors from the boat in English and there's no mention of him supposedly switching to Portuguese when speaking to any of the Japanese characters. the only way I could justify it is that john was just asking her how her Portuguese got so well with English being an unmentioned language she knows as well...tbh I'm still not sure if they were supposed to be speaking in English or Portuguese.
great show nonetheless but ya, this was hella throwing me off.

@@jyrrin so there's a movie technique that the first time I saw them do it is in the mummy. So it's a way to let people know that this person is speaking at different language, but it removes the need for subtitles. So the camera will zoom in real close to the person. Speaking of different language, so in this case Japanese and then it will slow. It was zoom in and we will start to hear them speak English and as it zooms out they start speaking English where we can understand. This technique is to show that we are hearing this character speak English, but they're actually speaking in their original language in this case Japanese. It is a very subtle but effective way to express someone speaking to different language but us the viewer are hearing English. I love the interpreter because her being there lets you know that hey, even though we may hear tanagas speaking english, he's actually speaking Japanese and that language barrier is still there. So I know it seems confusing but that's why you have to pay attention.

I love how they handle the language in this and not just the period accurate Japanese. There's a scene where the Jesuit translates for Sanada's daimyo and Blackthorne is naturally distrustful of him misconstruing his words. But as they all develop a modicum of trust, the show edits out the translator and the dialogue between Blackthorne and Sanada just flows as if it were a natural conversation. Reminded me of what John McTiernan did in 13th Warrior

I am loving the new adaptation, but don't dismiss the original mini-series out of hand. It was filmed on location in Japan using special built locations as well as using some of the historical buildings. The acting was great and it was groundbreaking in the use of having coordination with the Japanese film crews along with American. The music may be a little dated and of course the cameras were not to the level they may be now, but it was and still is a masterpiece. Also, the masterful performances of John Rhys-Davies as Rodriguez and the legendary Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga are hard to match.

Quite frankly, it was great, but it had too much to sqieeze in for too little time, so the pacing was off. The book was over 1000 pages. Maybe 1200. That's a lot to squeeze in to a few hours.

Yeah I watched the first episode in my home theater this weekend. It was a nice visual experience. The only thing is that Hulu tends to crash on my Amazon cube and I don't know why. But watching that on a 140 inch screen being projected by my LS1200 with full surround makes for a very nice experience. Hopefully it gets released on 4k blu ray down the road.

Yeah, am I the only one that thinks the show kinda looks like it has Vasalline smeared on the lens? At least for the obviously CG exterior shots. The original may have had a TV budget with early-'80s filming tech, but at least when they are walking about on a seaside cliff, they're actually walking about a Japanese seaside cliff.
That being said, it's great that modern cameras allow for period-accurate lighting in interior shots. The original looked like a soap opera.

It wasn't the first, but it did set a new standard for what you can showcase and discuss within fantasy or historical fiction in live action entertainment....especially with medieval influences. Plus, it did help personify that we don't need to just rely on one-shot big budget Hollywood movies to tell epic stories. Hate to say it, but that concept is going to be around for awhile until the next BIG epic series "Dethrones" it. prove me wrong.

Corey comparing the clans to the mafia is more apt than he thinks. The Yakuza actually do style themselves as modern day samurai, they carry some of the same traditions, yakuza organizations are called clans, they have a clan sigil. So he actually kinda nails it in the head.

      @robertbreedlovecraft Před 2 měsíci +3

I'm actually reading a history of the yakuza right now and a lot those proto-Yakuza gangs of the 18th and 19th century had both official and unofficial sanction from the shogunate to work their rackets, as long as they kept the peace and of course paid their cut to the government. That kind of corruption was embedded *deep* within Japanese institutions even after the country left the feudal era and modernized

Feudalism in medieval Europe was also basically just organized crime families sanctioned by the Church. I am intrigued by the show and the visuals are certainly impressive and modern (for whatever that’s worth… not much imo some things I absolutely love others bore me… just not a fan of modern CGI🤷‍♂️). Those lenses with all that distortion are a puzzling choice to me. Love the lighting/dynamic range we’ve come to expect from these types of productions.
I’m disappointed by all the changes to the story and characters. I’m choosing to be patient and allow them to do whatever it is they’re trying to do here, but Toranaga, Ishido, Blackthorne, Yabu (even changed his name for some reason), Omi and especially Mariko are all different people that what we get in the book and the miniseries.
I suspect this is their attempt to modernize this story. But this is a story set in feudal Japan. There are things that just wouldn’t have been in that setting. I’m hoping they don’t go too far.
Some things feel like they were messed with just because. The original fishing village “Anjiro” was changed to “Ajiro.” Why?
I assume there’s a good reason. It’s getting critical acclaim. So I’m intrigued. Curious where this goes. The score (if you can call it that) falls flat in the way that is so common today. No dynamics, just droning on and on. I get that’s just a fashion thing so I guess it’s ok. The miniseries had very late 70s, tv western music that didn’t age well either.
As a fan of the book who grew up watching the original miniseries, I was so excited. Now I’m on the fence but still hopeful. If this ends up being its own thing but still good, I’ll be happy with that.
