About the two swords. I think it was meant to be a respect thing, but Torunaga laughs because as was revealed earlier in the episode, those swords weren't Fuji's grandfather's. They had been bought off a drunken samurai so her family wouldn't be shamed for not having swords. Before the earthquake when Mariko and Blackthorn are arguing she tells him, "your words gave it power" and he takes this to heart. When he tells Torunaga that the swords were Fuji's family swords it is like he is speaking this into reality, and Torunaga laughes because he knows the situation behind the blades. The point of the episode is that John thinks hes getting the hang of how Japan works so he becomes careless and he gets the rug pulled out from him, so the end of the ep shows that hes learned his lesson
fantastic explanation, much better than I could have said it. One of the fundamental strengths of Blackthorn in the show is that he learns and learns quickly. Most of the "stupid" things he does is either because he is in an entirely foreign culture, and is constantly bombarded with new concepts, or because he is a genuinely "good" man.
Yes. Also there is another side where the swords could have been seen as an insulting gesture, but he cannot have power without swords.
Was not expecting Teddy to watch this but I'm so glad he did
I agree with Aaron, I rather watch anyone else but Blackthorne. More Fuji please.
LETS GO SHOGUN SOUP
Finally, Shogun Soup. I am at peace.
The whole pheasant thing was *almost* very well done, but didn’t make sense because Mariko was there all along. All it would take was a single word from Lady Fuji and Mariko would’ve told John to take it down.
These people have a very different culture, but are highly educated political players. They’d know to bring in the damn translator
Coming right out with a take hotter than a boiling barbarian
I've been waiting to watch this until I was caught up. John Blackthorne's actor is singlehandedly keeping me from recommending the show to friends
I don't disagree with Aaron that something is off with the character. I can't put my finger on it, but he feels a bit like he's playing a stage role rather than TV.
I am still very much enjoying the show.
There is something off with the way he talks
Agree with that, don't think his take was off at all tbh. His character development is getting a little stale
I think you nailed it! I wonder if the actor is classically trained in theater or opera because those line deliveries hit different. He’s chewing the scenery but chewing in a different way . . .
Agreed. I can’t get past the goofy look on his face when his smaller ship was scraping by the rocks during the escape from Osaka.
The guy’s performance is over the top. No subtlety. He has plot armor. It is obvious he is going to eventually become Tom Cruise in “The Last Samurai.”
He’s gonna magically be a better samurai than all of these other samurai that have been training their entire lives in these disciplines, after a montage.😂
This show was a pleasant surprise, really well done and pretty grown up despite some reservations I had
The reason why blackthorn says he already bathed was because during those times I don't remember if it was the prodestian or the English, but they believed that the water contained a lot of germ and death
Was specifically hoping to see this video show up on my feed like a week ago
Looks like I got a new show to watch
it’s AMAZING
I've been waiting for this. 😩
unexpected shogun rua reference love it
Ochiba has three-fold leverage.
1.Okuda's daughter (Okuda is based on Oda Nobunaga) (Nobunaga
was the 1st man to unify Japan)
2.Taiko's consort (Taiku was the 2nd unifier)
3. Mother of the heir (possible 3rd unifier)
Game of thrones in Japan 👌
Are you guys going to be reviewing 3 Body Problem?
Shoutout on the shogun rua reference!
I’m begging you guys to go on Internet Archive & watch the original. Not only does it explain a LOT of the context y’all are missing, but I would LOVE to hear Aaron compare & contrast the two versions. I bet all my cash he likes the 1980 version better.
Agree with Aaron. The show is called “Shogun,” but Blackthorn takes up half of every episode. Blackthorn serves as an avatar for the audience. It’s obvious from the beginning he has plot armor, and a romance was being set up with the translator. We learn the translator has a husband 5 minutes before he dies 😂.
Every other aspect of the show is more interesting. But he gives Tom Cruise in “The Last Samurai” vibes. His arc is predictable & cliche.
such a bad take. The entire point of the book and the show is experiencing this "alien" culture from the point of view of an outsider. Take that away, and it is an original show and not based on a book.
@@MrSmokinDragon everything I said about Blackthorn is true.
He is an avatar for the audience. He has plot armor. His character arc is cliché & predictable.
If you like cliche, predictable stuff, that’s your taste. I think it’s weighing the show down, and every other aspect of the show is more interesting.
Agree with this take completely.
Gonna edge to this video, thank you beau.
Y’all going to do 3 Body Problem?
these books are a series of books that jumps time periods. so they could do more that go into the future and show the results of what happened
If you all have time, you should watch Tokyo vice ! Love your podcast
Im with Aaron
Good soup 👌🏽
Miso Soup
9:10 i think you missed the point of why he did that
A) it was to imply to the nephew that he knew damn well it was him that did that
B) it puts Yabushige in a tough spot with the regents if his own nephew is in command of a division with superior foreign weapons
I started this show yesterday and I understand what aaron is saying. I think it's the voice and accent it's like over grandiose
Aaron is 100% right, Blackthorn’s bumbling around feels like filler. I want the politics! And I had to roll my eyes at the trope of white foreigner falls in love with Japanese woman 🙄you can’t convince me that she wanted him when he told her he didn’t want to bathe TWICE in a week.
Yaaaas woop woop
SHOGUN REVIEW *CLAP* *CLAP*
Hey guys could you please talk about Francis Coppola´s MEGALOPOLIS on your next video, I feel like it's a very interesting project. Big Hit or Miss
You guys not reviewing Invincible anymore?
Teddy, you HAVE TO watch Death Note. One of those animes that belong on your must-watch list.
2:51 woah woah woah. Cosmo Jarvis is amazing. He’s Tom Hardy with range.
Bad take.
* 38:16 did you not do the second half bc you got mad they renewed it? lol
Can't believe Jarvis' character didn't know what an earthquake was.
no earthquakes in northern europe
What? A 17th century navigator from England wouldn't know what an earthquake was? Lmao.
♥
lol Everybody and they momma doing a review of X-Men 97’ but not Nerd Soup 😂😂😂
Wheres the final review lol
It’s supposed to be awkward lol
I agree with Aaron. His character is the least interesting part of the show and I almost want to skip when hes on screen. The Japanese politics is so much more interesting.
Show has tooo much dialogue Man for real i came really interested after The trailer but all im seeing are subtitles for 8 chapters Straight. No action at all😊
Gotta agree with Aaron. You aint alone on that take. His character kind of takes away from the intrigue of the houses and power dynamics. Not a bad character but an unneeded one.
Agree!
His misunderstanding of the culture is stale character development point
such a bad take. The entire point of the book and the show is experiencing this "alien" culture from the point of view of an outsider. Take that away, and it is an original show and not based on a book.
I'm with you guys Blackthorne is the least compelling character
@@The810kidsometimes I am baffled at the fact that Transformers and Jurassic Park movies have millions of viewers in cinemas, but then I stumble upon takes like this and I wonder no more... people are stupid
Has to be one of the worst takes from Aaron yet unfortunately, maybe he really was watching a different show
I dunno, Aaron's had some pretty terrible takes, but I mean his opinion I guess
Yea awful take. I think the english guy is one of the best actors on the show easily
@@1TheFunnyPro1literally. One of the better fish out of water characters I’ve seen.
I actually agree with him tbh - I'm more interested in the Japanese political war
@@pipetprince it’s definitely more interesting but to say it wasn’t interesting at all and to basically imply the actor wasn’t doing a good job is just flat out wrong
Justified was a good fx show
I said this when I first saw the trailer, Cosmo Jarvis (the dude playing Blackthorne) seems a bit off from time to time.. but honestly he's growing on me slightly. I don't think he will capture me like fucking Charles Dance playing Tywin you know, but it's good enough and I think the fact that Blackthorne is suppose to be confused by the culture, barely know the language and stuff is what makes it seem worse than it is. If you get past that he will probably grow on you.
I agree with Aaron. Not a fan of the Englishman and everything involving his story
MM.. RABBIT STEW.. HAD TO SUBSTITUTE A FEW INGREIDIANTS.
Holy s*** y'all's views have gone down. Like waaaay down. It's like ever since game of thrones, a lot of these podcast review shows have gone down the toilet. That's too bad.
Belwildered to hear his take on Blackthorn
This show reminds me of the Tom Cruise “The Last Samurai.” Is this a case of awful storytelling or history repeating itself?
Y’all shoulda cut negative Nancy out of the intro lol
Blackthrone is legitimately one of the best parts of the show, hearing someone say the chemistry between him and Mariko is bad is baffling…it’s like are we even watching the same thing?
That’s got to be one of the worst takes on this series that exists on the internet.
I'm not sure if it's period-accurate, but he seems like he's hamming it up.
Do not like him
I am so genuinely baffled about Aaron not liking Blackthorne/Cosmo Jarvis. It's one thing to be more interested in the politics of the show, sure; but saying it's a BAD performance????? On what planet?!? And he and Lady Mariko have no chem??? What?!? Hard to believe he's watching the same show lmao great episode though!
The character is fine, the actor is bad
Completely disagree with Aaron. So far, the only character i don't like is the shoguns son and i understand that's how he is writing, so good job. Otherwise every character feels perfect. Blackthorn shows a different side that the higher political side and regents does not show, especially the culture, and the actor fits completely perfect.
But to each their own..
Art is subjective, but Aaron your wrong 🤣. You do a great job Aaron, but this has to be the WORST take you've had in the over half decade I've listened to you lol. Continue your great work, but forever I will remember this take as your biggest L. John Blackthorne has been just as interesting as everyone else. The actor is incredible.
The actor or the director is horrible. The script is fine
