I loved the Richard Chamberlain adaption. I was thrilled by the cinematography, set design and costumes. I can only imagine how awesome this will be with the modern version will be with current TV budgets.

Not only can he take credit for his performances in this series, he also has producer credits for this show. I've already binged the first two episodes, and both he and the cast and crew did an amazing job.
I remember John being hyped about this when this project was announced. Now I saw it and man i get it now. It's so good. The production is insane. Can't wait for the rest.

Great first 2 episodes, like the original it mixes well, it feels strong, involved and i think it’s only going to get better and better. I watched the original show as a kid and loved it.
My most anticipated show, so incredibly excited for this! The trailers and behind the scenes previews have been so on point too.
Saw the first two episodes in the theatre. Holly Hannah!! It is great. So great!! Story, casting, visual direction. It is perfect!

I'm So Stoked for Shogun!
Rating or not, first two epsiodes slapped. They showed 1600 Japan as it was, an exceptionally brutal yet civilized culture. I rarely feel uncomfortable, but the boiling pot really was a very uncomfortable scene and it fit perfectly, particularly how basically everyone was uncomfortable with it yet followed anyway which is accurate.
I would like to say that a novel is a novel and a historical fact is a historical fact.
It is true that Japan at the time was full of brutal rituals, but Adams, who became the model for Blackthorne, and the surviving crew were treated well after arriving in Japan. Not like in the movies.
Because of their identity were unknown and at the request of Catholic forces, they were imprisoned and demanded to be executed, but Japan's curiosity about non-Catholic Europeans won out.

A fascinating period of Japanese history. The first series with Richard Chamberlain was very entertaining. This version is better, in my opinion.

John if you love Samurais, watch blue eye samurai. It’s like the view from the other side, a samurai on a revenge mission to kill the 4 white men that were around at the time.

Brilliant series. Still a lot more of the story to tell so I'll be expecting a second series. Brilliant screen-writting, superb acting, from everyone, and an excellent use of Japanese locations.

I think the 13th Warrior did a great job of putting you in the protagonist's shoes when it came to not understanding a language. You start off with them speaking in their language but as the character progresses and learns their language it becomes English to show he understands them now. I think that would be a good route for the show to have gone and hope they did. If not guess I'll be reading subtitles

Cannot wait for this!! But, I have to say, I hate how critics get early access. Whether good, or bad, their reviews, or the coverage of their reviews do help shape opinions before films or series are released, instead of genuinely discovering your opinions yourself. Let's be honest as well, it is very hard to avoid them. Scrolling past the video thumbnail gave it away without clicking on the video. Personally, I don't even know how they can effectively review a series or season until it's all out, or maybe that's just thw coverage...

Honorable mention to Bosch, which I recently finished. It’s the only show I can think of that, after season 1, seasons 2-7 are all 100% fresh. Pretty impressive… and accurate. 🙂

It's important to note that 100% only means that they gave it a positive rating, not that they all thought it was a 10/10 and their review is usually for the first episode or a few of them, not the entire season. If you're really interested in shows about historical Japan, then there's plenty of "Taiga dramas" (Japan's most prestigious shows) featuring a historical period in Japan.
Visually this looks good, granted it does seem to cater towards Western sensibilities whereas a Japanese production would have more subdued colors. It's not an issue though, just something to point out. Spartacus had its inaccuracies too, and I enjoyed the heck out of that show.
Aside from that, some of those RT reviews thought that the writing never matched up to the visuals, so I'm curious to see whether my opinion is going to align with theirs on this matter.

This Shogun adaptation is great, but any rating by the sham, Rotten Tomatoes is meaningless.
Pretty pumped about it too. Read the book and watched the mini as a kid as well. It looks fantastic. If they stick to the story....it should be killer.

I loved the series with Chamberlain, I think it was the first view about this era of Japan made by an occidental broadcaster and for an american public. I heard the present series will be closer to the original novel. It might also be disappointing... but will see.

They were talking about no subtitles for the Japanese during the 1980 miniseries, not the 2024 remake. I love the book. Loved the 1980 miniseries, and loved the first three episodes of this version.
How come in the opening credits it says the reigning Taiko has died?
Episode 1 was quite amazing. But since it was brought up, all Japanese is subtitled and they made sure to justify it with scenes featuring no one from Europe, as well in differences of what main character says and how different in-show translators are not equally accurate and honest.
I read the book 45 years ago and was certain I could almost speak japanese😂

GOT was good until like the 4th season and it turned into a steaming pile of sht. Shogun beats out GOT imho. it's a tight, well written script with well developed character arcs that doesn't confuse you with 7,000 characters or lose it's focus.

@JamesWick99 I've seen all four seasons. Seasonal 1 is phenomenal and Season 3 is pretty damn great too, but Season 4 isn't even on the same level as Season 2

Hyped for the show… however, can we please rid ourselves of the “game of thrones” trope. Let’s be honest GoT sucked because of a terrible ending and is the reason many shows coming out now suck.

I second this but not for the same reason. We have 2 episodes of Shogun and I’m not even sure they’re as good as the first two episodes of Game of Thrones. GOT was a perfect show for 6 straight seasons and even season 7 was the best thing on TV when it aired. Its final season was an absolute shit show, yeah, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the show preceding that. Shogun is not on that level and honestly don’t think it can be.

I definitely enjoyed the first two episodes and excited for Tuesday to see next episode. I don’t mind the subtitles, usually I can’t see them anyway, so I just focus on just watching and listening to the acting that helps you understand the story. I definitely recommend watching.

Asian here, I don't really care how people pronounce it. Yes it is pronounced しょうぐん (Sho-goon) but most Americans don't know Japanese, it is ok to read it as it is spelled. Just like most of them can't pronounce Tsunami properly and instead just say ''Sunami''

I remember seeing the original when it was first out I liked it and I think it did well in the ratings.
It also reminded me that Richard Chamberlain was the king of miniseries he was in almost all major miniseries, but this one it looks like it's going to surpass it man it looks really great and it looks like a stay true to the book I think it's going to surpass the original one too.
I always believed that if you're going to do a remake it's got to be as good or even better than the original and this looks like it's going to achieve that, and you can't inject modern-day sensibilities for the modern audience because it already has politics in it of that time.
The sjws must be pissed that they can't screw this one up with the DFI stuff.😅

What the rating tells me is 18 people liked to so far. 18 reviews all positive means 100%. I wouldn’t call that “sus”.

The overall score is barely connected to the reality of the reviews, like a 2/4 being considered fresh or a critical scoreless review being considered fresh. I haven't looked at the RT score for Shogun yet but I have for other shows and it's easy to spot these kinds of inconsistencies

If you're tired of watching terrible shows like Monarch. Shogun is legitimately a really REALLY good show to watch. FX and HBO never disappoint in making amazing content. Anna Sawai is SO much better in this show than Monarch. You can tell by the pacing and the sense of direction the story was heading (no pun intended)

I don't think having the entire film in foreign languages was workable, plus well... its written in English originally
I think having it spoken completely in Japanese, and Portuguese would have been too much for English speaking audiences.

I very much want to see Shogun! The only problem I have with it is I hate most of the characters acting in Godzilla Monarch so much, I feel irritated even just seeing that Asian girl on the screen. Even though admittedly, she’s cute as a button! Other than that, I’m very excited for Shogun!
