This Is My Life (La vita) is a 1968 album by Shirley Bassey that was released in Italy on the United Artists label (UA 9035).
Bassey had started living as a tax exile in 1968, and was not permitted to work in Britain for two years.[1][2] In 1968 Bassey performed at the Sanremo Music Festival in Italy singing the song "La vita." This song was originally written by Bruno Canfora, with (Italian) lyrics by Antonio Amurri. For the song Bassey sang at the festival, the lyrics were partially rewritten in English by Norman Newell.
Side one of the album included only Italian songs with the exception of "La vita" which is the version with a mix of Italian and English lyrics. Side two is an edited version of the This Is My Life album that was released in Britain and the USA, with the addition of "To Give" which was only included in this album and on a single. Of the six songs recorded in Italian on this album only "La vita" has had a CD release. It appeared on the 1994 boxset Bassey - The EMI/UA Years 1959 - 1979. While in exile Bassey recorded several songs that were exclusively released in Italy and also performed frequently on Italian television.
In the next step in the evolution of "La vita," Newell wrote English lyrics for the remaining Italian parts and the result was "This Is My Life." This English-only version became one of Bassey's signature songs, often the final encore that she performs in concert.

I've uploaded over 930 clips of both live and studio recordings from this great lady of music. Her first number 1 was in the late 1950's and her last album that came out in 2000 was a top 10 hit. This resulted in Shirley having at least one top 40 hit over 7 consecutive decades. It's about the unique VOICE, along with the way she interprets the songs she sings.
Only Shirley can sing this song with so much intensity and passion because she is truly celebrating her life with this song. The sophisticated German audience recognized it and gave her a well deserved standing ovasion.

My first exposure to this lady and her voice was in NYC while visiting my uncle. I was 18 and at 63 she is still in my life. What a wonderful, wonderful entertainer and hearing her sing brings chills to me and makes me so very happy.

Barry: You are right on! Bassey has it all. Her vocals are fluid, and she can sing both softly as well as belt to the rafters. In addition, Bassey's vocal range in belting voice is remarkable for a mezzo-soprano. Her high register is the same as Streisand, but she has the ability to hit those lower rich notes, again with absolute fluidity. Today's pop singers get 100's of Millions of youtube views, even though they don't have, & never will have the whole package. Today, doesn't matter!

Ive never seen a singer put so much emotion into a song. I think that is what makes the performance great. Anyone can sing on key if they try, but it's the emotion that makes it a performance and not just a vocal track.
Never heard this song before, but they played this at my Grandmother funeral last week..Shirley was her favorite singer.

Those with exceptional voices, like Bassey, can sing just about anything you hand to them. Again, today, it doesn't matter. Bassey is certainly one of the last few of the last generation of the great vocalists.

Barbra is a very different singer. Shirley would never sing so calmly, softly as only Barbra can. Barbra in almost every song is also powerful. But, well, Shirley sings her lungs out! No question about it. So powerful.

+Barry Mires - Great insight..Shirley is a great singer/actress. You may or may not be aware that she tried out for the part of 'My Fair Lady' and the producers were looking at her very seriously. She actually was told that she had the part, but at the last moment they changed their minds. Back then, it wasn't so easy for a mixed race person go get a major part role across from a white man, (Rex Harrison). In the end, Audrey Hepburn got the role, and it was very clear from the start that she was not a singer! Shirley was devastated. But, she decided to show her acting abilities in her stage performances. She would have been a great actress.

No easy task for a lady of mixed race to get the roles she deserved back in that time. I think we can all agree she made the correct decision.....but she would have made a magnificent Anita in West Side Story....just my long held want for songs she would have killed in just the right way.....and she could have been cast in that one too...perhaps they feared she would steal the show.....and no doubt she would have shone like the star she is. Natalie wood had a refreshingly ingenue voided that worked for My Fair Lady across from Rex Harrison who words spoke his songs. He would have been totally eclipsed by the amazing Shirley Bassey and the casting agents knew it.
Flawless as always. I was lucky enough to catch her show in Las Vegas twice. I’m so glad I had the opportunity. She was and still is wonderful.

Nen...great comment! Most singers of Shirley's generation have never used Auto-Tune, and if you asked them, most probably have never heard of it, and wouldn't use it. I saw a recent interview that Aretha Franklin gave, and when they asked her if she had ever used it, her response was, 'What is that?' When the person said it's an electronic device that makes you sound better and sing with correct pitch. She just laughed. It's a shame that so many people of the younger generation don't even realize that many of their favorites use this device, and most who do use it wouldn't admit to it either. Of course, it would take more than auto-tune to help Britney Spears! lol.
Totally agree with you. singers back then perform with live bands and not pre-recorded music or minus one. I always loved and admired Shirley Bassey growing up as her performances are unequaled. She acts the songs with full expressions and you can feel it touch you. never a dull moment when you see her perform. The only one I can think of that is close to her and I also admire is Celine Dion. God Bless them both for bringing the music back to music..................
Shirley is 79 yo, and will turn 80 on January 8th. Shirley and Elvis have the same birthday, with Shirley being younger by exactly 2 years. Does she still look great and have an amazing voice? You bet. She Shirley's performance of Diamonds Are Forever that was performed at Queen Elizabeth's 90th Birthday celebration a few months back. This dame is ageless!

Shirley was actually one of the top choices for the lead in 'My Fair Lady', but at the last minute the producers decided to go with actress Audrey Hepburn, even though she can't sing. Shirley was devastated, but soon got over it. She knew that back in the day, it wasn't easy for a mixed race person to star across a white person in a major movie. So, Shirley shows her acting ability in her emotional performances, and thankfully she can back it up with her VOICE.

ATTENTION: Dame Shirley Bassey will be appearing at the 2013 Academy Awards Show In Hollywood on February 24th. She will perform for the 50th James Bond anniversary celebration! Wonderful News! Bassey is herself celebrating 60 (Diamond) years in Show Business, starting back in 1953.
When her daughter died as a teenager, found beneath the Bristol Bridge just a few short years before the tapping of this concert, that might be a reason.
I believe this was one of the first concerts she did after that, she lost her voice due to the grief and it took about 2 years to get it back.
