The "Perfume" novel is a good read. And the film honors the novel quite well. Especially the ending. Shades of "Stranger in a Strange Land" anybody?
I've read it also. The movie and the book are both good.
"Perfume" is in every top ten list I've ever made. Brilliant, unconventional, and beautiful horror film...
Oh, "Perfume" is brilliant! I have it on dvd, it's a part of my Alan Rickman-collection. I adored that man, may he rest in peace.
That movie is gorgeous, and I love that you can practically smell it too, from the filth on the streets to the sweet perfumes. The book it's based on is great too!
Fun fact about the book Perfume, Nirvana has a song about it called Scentless Apprentice! I love it.
I read Kurt always took the book with him.
Emma... your channel is invaluable!!!! I had never heard of "Perfume" before... and having just watched it, I cannot rate this movie highly enough!!!! It's absolutely fantastic, the cinematography is simply stunning and the story and acting all round is just brilliant!!! Thanks sooo much for introducing me to this dark macabre film. Much love from the UK 😍
thank you!
Pity is a top notch film. A fascinating premise that actually delivers. Disturbing & memorable.
Perfume is stunning. One of my favorites of 2006.
The House That Jack Built can also be read as a twisted semi-autobiographical film from Lars von Trier.
I come for the horror, I stay for the disturbing. Thank you for these lists. Of the ones you’ve mentioned, I’ve only seen THTJB. And man, even on a Lars Von Trier scale, that film was disturbing. A film that doesn’t come up often, but is very disturbing is Larry Clark’s “Bully”. 22 years later and I still can’t shake that film.
I remember Roger Ebert saying that Bully should be mandatory viewing for all high school students. I couldn't agree more - along with Requiem for a Dream. Great stuff. :)
‘Jack’ disturbed me mostly because of the kid in the freezer, but I’ve still seen the movie twice. It’s longer than I’d like, but it’s still good.
I saw Perfume a long time ago and don’t remember anything, but I will rewatch bc it has great actors.
Here’s some weird/unexpected movies that aren’t actually traumatic (though some have dark themes):
• Greener Grass
• Freeway
• Eega
• Brigsby Bear
• Society
• Titane (Wholesome for a movie about a murderer with a car kink)
• Daniel Isn’t Real
• Flesh For Frankenstein
• The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover
• They Cloned Tyrone
I’ve covered a lot of these! Some have whole videos dedicated to them. I do think there’s one or two I haven’t seen thanks!
Freeway is good. "Settle down Bob, you just better settle down!"
Has anybody mentioned "They Look Like People?"
Finally movies I haven't heard of before. Thank you.
The House That Jack Built shocked me more than pretty much any other movie.
I love your disturbing lists. Thanks so much. Perfume is an amazing film and faithful to the novel. If i may...i would recommend to watch After Lucia..its a brutal disturbing Mexican film about teenage bullying. I was watching nothing bad can happen ,which you recommended recently, and the chicken scene made me think of a particular scene involving a cake in this film. I think youd really like it and its one great example of dark Mexican cinema. Bajo la sal (under the salt) is another great example of this.
That ending of Perfume had my jaw on the floor lol....such a unique film.
Yes , Emma is back with a banger video ❤❤❤
I really excited to watch those for sure 🔥🔥🔥
Can't wait to watch this!
I saw Paul Verhoeven's Nunsploitation movie Benedetta (new to Mubi) yesterday and I think you'd enjoy that lots... religious and perverse.
Perfume is a beautifully made film. The story is something different and in a way a strangely disturbing but beautifully thought provoking movie. I loved it.
Fairly new subscriber here and I LOVE these videos. Keep up the amazing content.
Daaamn, these are great recommendations! Loving this series so far
I love your videos so much and I'm so happy I found you and subscribed! I've definitely been growing my watchlist even more thanks to you 😂❤
Really appreciate your channel. Thank you!
I feel like the Mexican film New Order, fits the list. What happens in that movie is disturbing and unexpected. It ends leaving you with a sense of hopelessness as you feel miserable.
The house that jack built is my favourite of all time :D
Would you ever make a Disturbing Movies video about movies that are disturbing but DON'T have SA scenes? I can stomach a lot of things, but SA isn't one of them.
I used to work at a video rental store (yes I know I’m old lol) and I took home Perfume on a whim one night, glad I did. I don’t remember everything about it but I do recall loving how stylistic it is, I should definitely check it out again, thanks for reminding me about it!
Please keep the recommendations coming. Looking for new horror. I've seen everything. And it's very hard for me to find one that I haven't. So thanks for this list i'm going to check some of these out
Thanks I try!
Thanks for the list, Emma. I haven't seen any of those films, but at least three of them is going on my watchlist: Miss Meadows, Manodrome and Perfume.
Enjoy!
I loved the house that jack built so so good
The novel on which Perfume is based has absolutely no dialog and it's brilliant!
I think I might be one of the very few people who hated Perfume. I saw it around 2007-2008, and I just couldn't wait for it to be over, so I could do literally anything else. I have to admit though, that sometimes my enjoyment of a movie can depend, greatly, on the mood I'm in. So maybe I need to give it another shot?
I hated it too, but different reasons perhaps. The central character enraged me. I have issues.
Yes! I absolutely hated that guy! Like I said, it's been a while since I watched it, but that does remind me that was one of the reasons I wanted the movie over. The main character was just the worst.@@whynoteh
You have to watch Hungry Hearts. The ending isn't really a twist, but it feels very abrupt and unexpected.
Nice job. Interesting list.
Perfume is INCREDIBLE! And yes, I absolutely did not see any of that ending coming. Totally wild ride.
Quills isn’t really disturbing but it’s in the same vein as Perfume. No one talks about Quills. I love that film!
Perfume is one of my ultimate favourites
"Sick of Myself" is not as disturbing as "Pity"? Whoa. I was floored by "Sick of Myself" and rather disturbed in the best way possible. Also, early Yorgos? Um, yes need to watch. Thanks for everything. Also, "Saltburn" was fantastic. Loved everything about it.
Last list brought me a film that greatly traumatized me to silence. Ready for the next list!!
Perfume rates in my top 10 of all films, originally read the novel and once I found that Dustin Hoffman was playing the mentor perfumer I was initially disappointed, however he did not disappoint. Brilliant direction to capture the sense of smell.
Little Children is another one for the list! It stars Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Connolly, Jackie Earle Haley. Killing Them Softly starring Brad Pitt is another one that is kind of disturbing as well. Bernie starring Jack Black, Matthew McConnaughey & Shirley Maclaine is a dark comedy/ docudrama...it's dark comedy but it's a bit disturbing, as it's based on a true case.
Miss Meadows movie ❤
Perfume...I did see it years ago but can't remember it much so must give this a re-watch as well as catching all the others... Good list! 👍
Perfume was truly one of a kind. And such a great group watch.
Always up for your twisted recomendations!
As for my tip for you I’ll repeat one I saw at a festival a couple of weeks ago think is available online now : Red Rooms. Superb slowburn psychological drama thriller that is super subtle but at the same time horrifying in the best way. Will most likely be on my top10 list of the year.
Yes! People have been recommending it to me but I didn’t think it was out yet
Ok.. How? How in The World is Red Room a “subtle “ film?!? It’s at the level of most disturbing films ever…
@@zianawind2970 I was thinking subtle in the way of ot not actually showing much but still manageing to be super disturbing by knowing how to give the viewer the right information to read between the lines and or picturing whats not being shown.
Miss Meadows was *so* strange. 😄 Even the music, at times.
In a Glass Cage is really messed up, and I don’t hear many people talk about it. I thought it was French, but it’s a Spanish film
The Nirvana song Scentless Apprentice is based on the book Perfume is adapted from.
Perfume...saw several times...great watch
Thanks so much, this is the psyco movie i been looking for, need more recomendation movie like this, i hope you health, one again THANKS!!!
Perfume actually inspired the song Scentless Apprentice by Nirvana
i don't know if you've seen it already but definitely check out Violet Perfume 2001
Love Perfume.Ben Wishaw is awesome in this.
Manodrome is a great title
Manodrome has been on my watchlist and I'm keen to pull the trigger on that one to discover what it actually is.
Im keen on your thoughts haha!
Have you seen good boy? I can't find it anywhere where I am in Canada:(
OMG Perfume, ha I remember renting this dvd from a local store with my ex boyfriend! Needless to say it was quite the experience for both of us. I have never seen it since..maybe that needs to change.
Hey, Emma... I'd like to ask you something...I do reviews, etc on different platforms, and I'd like to know this:
Which 5 horror movies just scream "Australia?" Movies that are 100%, of your homeland?
I’ve done a video on Aussie horror!
'Manodrome' looks interesting, but I'm kinda the same vibes I got from 'Men'. We'll see I guess.
Oh very different this one is about all male characters Men is a fantasy from a womans perspective! hope you like it!
I think i would have likes Perfume more if i hadn't read the book first
I have to mention, I rewatched Perfume recently and personally kinda hated it lol. But mainly because of the climax (you know which scene)... it just felt overly silly to me. I am very interested in checking out the first 3 films on this list, though.
I know everyone feels some kind of way about the end of Perfume. But the entire beginning is the true horror. Everything that happens to and with that infant and all those hideous vile smells and actions, for me, way worse than the end.
The house that Jack built is so underrated I think this was the directors best film. It's n art film and I think people forget that it not supposed to play out like a regular movie and I learn something new every time I rewatch it . Lars in the man even if he is a sick fk lol😅
i remember being spoiled by pefume when I was in highschool... i have just gone to watch it last year (10+ years later, still knowing the ending)... but damn, the movie is a beauty
the end is wild for a highschooler!
Isn't Pity just a remake of the Chuck Palahniuk book Choke? Which was also made into a movie.
I didn’t think so, seemed very different to me
Ok, just the way you explained it, that popped into my head. I haven't seen Pity. @@spookyastronauts
The book Perfume is an all-time great, so it blows the film out of the water IMO, although the film is pretty good. I loved House That Jack Built, but if it's Von Trier, expect some parts to be quite upsetting. Miss Meadows solely for Holme's part. Manodrome and Pity look like must sees!!
"Chasing Sleep"
Hi Emma this is off topic but have you seen the silent hill:ascension series on Tubi yet? I was wondering if it is worth watching or I could just check it out myself instead haha thanks
I havent!
I love that this video is just an hour old!!! Lol. I feel special. Another great list, Emma!!!!
My heart can't beat unless you tell it to....
Eat me...
Both films I felt were pretty strange.
Lmao 😉
Dude I just watched The House That Jack Built…some of the most fucked up disturbed scenes I’ve ever seen, and yet I found myself laughing for a lot of the movie. What the f***. Kinda goofy and I agree w you, idk if I like or not lmao but it’s definitely a very cool movie
Perfume is an awesome movie!!!
did you review saltburn?
Yes
You should make a disturbing documentary video
I have!
@@spookyastronauts awesome! I'll have to check it out. Your videos are great. I have found so many movies through your videos
You should watch Dogs don't Wear Boîte
If your talking disturbing endings that are recent. Hard to beat speak no evil for me!
I did a review on it! i wonder how the remake will turn out!
Teeth
Raw
Swallow

😊piranha movie from 1978 jaws 1975 killer fish 1978 movie barracuda 1978 movie the list goes on
I have reviews on teeth, raw and swallow!
🖤
CZcams has basically turned into a place where people only talk about Disney, Marvel, DC, Pixar and Lucasfilm and it's boring. Yet, in the same breath they keep asking why people aren't supporting Indie movies. Guess what, we only hear about Disney and never anything else. That's why I love channels like this. It's a place that cares about other movies. We need to turn CZcams into this, a place where we can learn about movies we don't know about, so we can give our support and money to where it belongs.
So well said 👏👏👏👏
If you look at what happened this summer plus the recent box office failure of The Marvels, the studios are learning the hard way that the the huge blockbuster is no longer a guaranteed success.
Yes, more disturbing movies. I watched all of the video's of your previous video and was pleasantly surprised.
nah miss meadows is genuinely such a bad movie
The house that jack built was boring.
Adding them to "your" list. Are you a patron on Letterboxd? Or a pro? If so, is it worth it? I'm not sure if I can afford it, so I'm looking for opinions. TY!
It's movies she'll check out
Great list Emma. Have you ever thought of ranking all of the disturbing films in a new list for us?
High Tension is an excellent horror film not a lot of people have seen. It’s got a hell of a twist! 😂😂😂😂
The 'Jack' movie made me feel ill. I imagine Serial killers would enjoy it. I the invasion of the West and Anti- White propaganda disturbing.
😊great review 😊
Hey 👋 Emma🩷👼🏻💋🎄
I imagine Katie Holmes tapped into her marriage with Tom Cruise tohelo with her portrayal of Miss.Meadows...lol and you said Tom did nothing for your career..lol 😂
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
