Thanks for the Battle!!! Vote for me everybody
where?
@@Josabooba just comment and say Grants the best đ€Ł
Grants the best
Honestly your flow and creativity was the best in this battle!
you are 100% the best because you used the Cycles render engine (and didn't use Unreal Engine)
Grant won by a drawbridge.
đ
and banner
đ
First rule of Castle Building: Never place a castle where things are HIGHER than the castle...
To be fair, when they started placing the castles, they were the highest things there. :P
â@@Kio_Kurashimountains fell from the sky and foiled their designs
Impressed with all 3 given they only had 90 minutes, but it is Grant for the win here.
obviously .. comparing game engines with blender is like comparing blender to dedicated modelling suites.
@@3dbob891 dumb Take đź
@@3dbob891 Even visuals aside the actual level flow from Grant was more realized. (Actual enemy progression and final boss)
Grant's island seems more pleasing to the eye and has a more difficult setting for the player to aboard the island because this requires the player to gather all the resources to craft a boat just to reach it and its more stylized approach. Also like the Boss idea too
Indeedđ
What a fun battle! Grant's island castle is my winner!
đ
Rick taught us that you have to have moments and his castle has only 2 I think, battle and flag capture. Grant's castle though has 3 moments the forest, the road to the castle and the Boss. And he has banner's as per client request. Grant wins. Gary's gameplay wise is great but it looks bad :))
đ
Wise comments! I had a bunch more moments but edited them out to keep the summary tight.
That was really fun. I'm quite surprised by how much Rick was able to do through Unreal. I thought Grant would have won it by a landslide with Blender, but Unreal looked like a lot of fun to work with.
Rick was also surprised by how much he was able to do.
Honestly, Unreal 5 is probably the best "all-in-one" game engine that exists currently, you can do pretty much everything within one window, except maybe the actual artwork/drawing. Also consider that he wasn't even familiar with Unreal and obviously hadn't worked with it much if at all before, so it's crazy to think what an Unreal expert could have done in the same amount of time.
I was really surprised by all the castles and everything everyone was able to make, they are all impressive!
I think,
Rick has the castle that makes sense in terms of size and structure.
Grant has the castle with better looking scenary.
Gary has the castle with gameplay mechanics design in mind...
so...
overall...
i think i like Rick's castle.
Excellent conclusion.
@@rick_davidson haha
@@rick_davidson terrible conclusion.... đ
I love all three of them. You guys did very well, for such a short time.
Loving the 3 devs make series, please do more:)
The blender guy defiantly, though there was a few bits where he could have done a bit better, for example with the water he could have used Perl in noice with a displacement map to make it look better quick. Though I am very impressed with all of them
thanks - I had to keep it flat shaded :)
@@grabbitt (: cool
Iâm glad to see more of these videos theyâre really great
Please do more of these, it was fun, the editing was really good. Congratulations â€
Rick is very funny on his feet. Not many people can joke so well on the fly.
Thank you! Too kind.
@@rick_davidson I don't think they had planes xD HAHAHA you are hilarious dude!
Grant's castle is the winner. Have to remember how he did the rocks! Though all did an amazing job, especially for the time limit they had.
For future reference if anybody needs it:
Add an Icosphere, set divisions to 1
Hit tab to Edit mode
Then select a vertex and hit Ctrl+Shift+B to bevel (menu item is Vertex > Bevel)
Grab a vertex and move it along its normal by hitting G then G
If you have Auto Merge Vertices on the 2 overlapping verts will merge (That's a tick box top right of screen while you're in edit mode)
Hope it helps! It's also fun to add a Decimate modifier afterwards.
đđ
Gorgeous battle. A very beautiful castle. All of them. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the Battle! Who has the best Draaaawbridge?!
Grant's was the most visually appealing imo, but what the other guys did inside of Unity and Unreal in such a short amount of time is very impressive! Well done guys đđŻ
Last presentation for gameplay. 3rd guy for design. 1st guy for color.
That was great! I was really surprised by both Unity and Unreal. I had expected for F
Grant to just completely mop the floor with the other two, but they both came in a respectable 2nd and 3rd place.
this is really fun to watch!
i hope yall can keep doing this kind of content.
Grant because the scenic shot looks amazing, and great scenario retaking the castle WITH A BOSS FIGHT. Glorious.
I have to say I do think Grantâs is the best +1
đ
I like all 3 castles, so no winner or all are winner
Lol, Grant is just slowly and quietly building a masterpiece! I'm loving these competitions, so fun to see each persons creativity but also just quick ideas on what each program can do! The way Rick added water in his level, awesome!
All three looked great. I'm not sure Unity is as capable as the others. Rick's castle wins the prize. Grant's use of color is more visually appealing.
Ooo more full videos that's fun đ
yes pls this vid is great, Love your work guys best of luck!
I like Gary's approach.
There is probably a rich duck living in the keep.
The barbarians tried to get some stuff out but all they managed was...
That. One. Chest.
His name is King Mallard II đ
One 3D artist overwhelemed two game developers! Great video, enjoyed watching.
Omg I'm loving these videos, please just continue haha
Absolutely love these!
You guys are the reason I started this path.. wish I had amazing friendship like that wow
Not to be that guy, but castles actually were quite often painted white. I forget all the reasons why outside of pure vanity, but a white castle would be more period appropriate that a "proper grey" castle. Very fun video.
There's no need to bring historical accuracy into the conversation.
I remember hearing somewhere of a castle in France that had the entire outer curtain wall painted salmon pink. Medieval aesthetics were pretty garish really.
I love being "that guy", so here are some extra details for you đ
Historically, they were painted for a few reasons; It made them more visible from a distance, It helped to protects the underlying structure from the weather, It may have helped control the spread of disease.
It's also worth noting that many early-medieval castles were made from wood rather than stone. In some cases, these wooden structures would be disguised as stone castles to make them look more fire-resistant that they actually were.
I was going to color mine something different but ran out of time, so I'm going to claim that it's a wooden castle that has a stone veneer to make it look more durable! đ
I gotta say, I think Unreal wins here. The one made in blender looked good and was more detailed, possibly, but the Unreal creation not only completed the castle assignment, but also had the rest of the big open land surrounding the castle to potentially explore; with mountains, small forests, etc... Doing all of that compared to just the single Island Castle within the same amount of time, and by someone who isn't even accustomed to working with Unreal, is simply fantastic. It not only illustrates the ability of the guy who made it, but also the power and ease-of-use of Unreal. Edit: Also, I'm a bit surprised by how crappy the Unity creation looks in comparison to both. Not to blame the person who made it, it just looks like Unity has much worse default tools, and relies much more heavily on the marketplace and plugins.
The thing is that you're able to implement Blender files into Unreal, thus making blender superior for this kind of work and detailing which you can then add onto a world made in Unreal. At least imo.
but castles are built so theyre hard to take. So the fact that it wasn't built on top of a mountain makes no sense logically XD
Hilarious, and given the time allotted all the work is fantastic.
Al three are doing great but my preference goes to Grant for the idea of the island and the complexity of his scenario đ
Interesting concept, but i think the final test should be to have a judge play test them each
Excellent video and amazing concept, thank you!! đ€© Love all three levels, but have to go with Grant's, which has story moments and a boss fight (+so many nice rocks)!!
đ
Gary's entry is the one that most closely resembled a game level for me. IDK but I thought of Spyro when was doing the walkthrough of his level.
great stuff guys all!
All 3 are impressive, but imh opinion, i like Gary's castle.
Great job guys LOL. Do more of these! I'm partial to Grant because I've learned so much from him...plus, it's Blender đ However, what you guys were able to do locally with Unity and Unreal is just amazing. Great work!
đ
Thanks for the laugh! I find Grant's scenario more spellbinding đȘWith a raft, of course đ
I would like to vote the blender guy, the concept just makes sense. Everything especially the banner and the sequence of the pathway through each path. The barbarians and also unique amongst them a castle is unique it has its own castle among the lands high area which makes a castle more interesting
Super cool idea for a video! I'd love to be able to join one day! đ
I wish you'd showcased the castles better, I wanted to see the castles better :(
This was a lot of fun! My first time viewing one of your videos on YT.
Very Impressive, even though I am a fun of Gary and he did a very good job with ProBuilder (that is somewhat difficult to manage), I vote for Grant because the final visual result is the best. Sorry Rick.... :) (cool reflections though on the river)
đ
Though I would choose Rick for explaining everything he did (following what he explains in his courses the same), I also have a preference for Unity, where I saw Gary do awesome low poly and actually setup the level pretty well. But I think Grant won honestly :D
Drawbridge!
Oh, and I vote for Rick!
Thanks guys, your video kinda motivated me, didn't think before, that you could do that in 90 minutes, all 3 were great, Grant definitely won
This was fun and I enjoyed watching the race against time from all three, but Grant solo'd with the banners and the boss at the end, common Blender W
I work primarily in Unity, so i have no doubds that you can make great looking staff in Blender and Unreal. But it realy surprises me what probuilder is capable to))
All castles look great. I think it is a tie!
This was fun to watch.
Ha! This was so awesome! I just learned about the modeling updates they made in Unreal 5.1âŠ. might not even need Blender anymore⊠đ
This was pretty good. Very fun video for sure.
A lot of fun, good editing too.
That was more fun to watch then I expected, good jobs guys. Grants the best, but Ricks was a close 2nd.
đ
Haha! great atmosphere. I always wanted to see Grant prototyping a level in real time. Good stuff! great for learning for a beginner like me
Fun to watch! Interesting to see all the design programs. But Grant and Blender seemed to win hands down.
đ
Had no clue Unreal Engine had 3d modeling tools, that is neat!
This was so fun! And all reminds me of so much games and yes my fav games are period games
Loved the blender one!
Really enjoyed this video
My money was on Grant from the start, but it was worth it to watch to the end for the giggles. everything looked pretty awesome at the end, so great job guys.
đ
Grant made a gorgeous scene, great work everybody
Just got into this video and its FUN to watch :) They are like playing but they are modeling that's why they are smiling while modeling. I hope to watch another modeling battle like this one
Client: "What is that? Is that a rocket?"
Grant: "Oi Oi OI! ITS A CASTLE đ"
Well Grantâs did sort of look like his Blender island lesson starting out đ
Love this! Grant sneaks in as the winner for me, so close though, only a drawbridge in it đ€Ł
I love this video. I need more content like this!
Amazing work, everyone! Loving the level of detail and creativity from all three contenders. Gotta give it to Grant Abbitt for the spectacular castle and environment.
đ
Having modelled a castle myself with Unity's probuilder tool, I can say that Gary did pretty well. proBuilder has a big problem if you start deforming the basic shape without having prepped all your loop cuts in advance, which is probably why Unreal was probably the easier tool to work with head to head. Though it has to be said that blender was always going to be the prettiest one for lighting and ambience.
I had a blast watching this đ€Ł . Team Grant !!!
đ
Hmm, gotta go with Grant. I have always seen blender as the 3D modeller, Unreal the level builder, and don't know how much further you can take blender in the game dev process. Great 'show', thanks!!!!
đ
Amazing job and great video. For me it's a draw(bridge). đ
These are genuinely some of the most fun game dev videos. đ
Aww, thanks. Don't forget to tell your friends đ
Taking the level into account, Rick won hands down using Unreal. But if only the castle, then Grant was best. Rick+Unreal = (Gary + Unnty) + (Grant + Blender). Thanks for doing this! This brought out the power of Unreal Engine!
It's a three-way draw(bridge)!
Nice
đ
đȘ
Blender guy nailed it
Grant's probably the one i think looks the best, but I do think Rick's have the best potential as a game level
Yes, wise conclusion.
2 min in an i already learn something for blender about something i have never even thought about wtf
Rick killing it in the commentary category.
I didn't know drawbridges could bring so much happiness.
đ€Ł
The winner for me was Grant! The middle guy, the blender guy!
Gonna have to go with Grant on this one!
đ
Grants castle was the best, but i think it also to do with blender being better for modeling than unity and unreal, also Cycles is just amazing! I feel like cycles makes anything look cool. I haven't used either unity or unreal, but they are both game engines and blender is for modeling so i'd assume it would better for modeling a scene.
I've used Unity and Blender and would agree your scene will automatically look better in Blender.
Unity is going to be closer on rendering, but still Blender IS for modelling and rendering, so it's going to look great.
On the other hand, Grant can't play a game in Blender like the others could.
đ
Fascinating!
I think Blender is awesome for general purpose modeling, but Unreal Engine comes first if you want to create game-ready assets.
I think every challenge should include a drawbridge for now on đ
GRANT is 100% the best because he used the Cycles render engine (and didn't use Unreal Engine)
That was great fun.
Very good attempt by all 3, I give the prize to Blender though.
đ
draw bridge was epic
that was a fun video!
You can make things very fast in blender if you know the hot keys
Very interesting to watch. It'd be great to see with even more contestants/tools, but I do get the focus on these 3 great technologies. It would also be interesting to see them switch technologies, just because combined work might put the software through its paces a little more via different approaches by different people. In terms of this actual contest, looks like Grant won for me because (1) I cannot get over that excellent setting idea of that castle in a rock island on the water like that; (2) as someone else pointed out, Grant actually does better having moments (three moments for Grant and two moments in Rick's model); and (3) Yes, Grant had the idea first of doing that drawbridge! But some tools like Unreal might have greater advantages over the long haul because that's the way their capability operates (it takes longer to do cooler stuff). And it would be great to have a second part where they take their creations into a next stage with more animation or interactivity or something. Changing a waving flag that gets raised upon completion, etc. -- maybe Blender cold be paired with another technology in that example. Also, could have other challenges, like are you aware that there are blind people that create 3D models? Using programs like Open SCAD etc. you can create models that can be exported for use in all kinds of things (for things from 3D printing to, yes, game engines). Or maybe who can use an AI like ChatGPT most effectively with these tools.
đ
Unreal and Blender take the cake.
