Avatar: The Last Airbender is about as close to perfection as an animated series can get. The masterfully plotted series follows the young Avatar Aang as he masters the four elements, makes strong friendships, and ultimately saves the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai! What’s crazy is that there is one small event that put the entire series into motion. If things had played out differently, who knows what would’ve happened.
That event is, of course, the moment where young Aang ran away from his responsibilities as Avatar when the other airbenders threatened to take him away from his father-figure Monk Gyatso. This moment caused him to become stuck in the very same iceberg that Katara would later find him in. This small act led to the Fire Nation’s aggressive expansion into the rest of the world. Fire Lord Azulon’s brutal rampage across the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes was only possible because there was no Avatar to restore balance to the world.
So what would’ve happened if Aang didn't run away? Well, we here at CBR have put our heads together and have come up with a pretty great alternative journey for the young Avatar. Watch as Aang goes from living with the Air Nomads to completing his training across the war-torn nations. He makes new (and familiar) friends along the way who teach him noble lessons as he works to restore order to the world.

So many people are asking the question "what if Aang never ran away"? but no one ever asks "what if Aang was never found by Sokka and Katara"?
Unless the iceberg thawed he would have died from being frozen too long. Being frozen in the iceberg actually had an impact on him dying st the age of 66 I thinkm

Oh shit lol I kinda just realized that plus air is the element of freedom and katara had been stuck in her small water tribe her whole life without real freedom, just like Korra, so she would also have difficulty learning it if she ever found a master.

I don't think it would take sang all that long. Part of the reason the fire nation got so strong was because of all the resources they were able to get over time with no opposition from the Avatar. Also with him missing for so long everyone gave up hope and thought he no longer existed. But with him there the fire nation would've never had such a stronghold on the world. Also there probably would've been a lot more fire nation on his side as well. It took a century of propaganda and teaching them fire nation nationalism for everyone in the fire nation to be on board. Originally thought on it were probably divided and once they had opposition from Aang they would've backed down sooner.
You’re forgetting The third advantage. No one had fought or seen an air bender in 100 years. And no one knew how to combat them

On the subject of Aangs motivation, you forget the White Lotus. They would probably search him out and move around while training him themselves. He might have generals training him and he’d probably learned actual combat skills and philosophies causing him to make short work of the fire nation once joining the war. Aang himself would probably become a darker character than in the original.
Bumi, Iroh and all the other members were children at that time so white lotus actualy didn´t exist.
@@bullpix250 the canon book rise of kyoshi shows that white loyus existed before she was born and were trying to locate kyoshi so white lotus did exist before but bumi and iroh and other won't be in it

I think you’re underestinating how seriously aang would take his training. I think he would face azulon earlier and be more clever with strategies.

I think that he would kill Azulon and he would have iroh. But he was more peaceful than most of his family.
I don’t think Aang would attack a baby, so he’d probably defeat Sozin directly in order to end the war.
With trauma of witnessing the attack on Air nomads Ang would be more serious in his training and struggle against Fire Lords

One thing that should be considered is that the air nomads most likely choose not to defend themselves because they knew the avatar was not there, and the fire nation wiped them out because they thought they were lying and wanted to make sure no stone was left unturned. If he was there, if they knew where he was, they would defend him fiercely. This would change the trajectory of the entire war.
We need a movie of just the air nomads vs the fire nation

The thing is he didn't _let_ them. We're talking about a 12 year old airbender (a master, yes, but all Aang has at that point is just airbending) vs an entire Comet-powered Fire Nation army. The narrator even points out that the elders would hide Aang for his safety.
I love that Katara could have been an avatar. It could have been true because she was a really strong water bender and a good person over all

I don’t think Aang would let the war run on until Iroh and Ozai are young adults, that’s still a very long time. Aang being around 25-30 would be a good age tbh. I like the way Aang could battle Azulon though, they will probably be the same age which would be cool.
turd turdy I just checked and you’re right, I don’t really like this theory then. Aang battling a fire Lord that is 12 years younger is pretty weird, I can imagine Aang beating Azulon easily. Roku seemed around 25-30 when he was a fully realised avatar. If Aang was a fully realised avatar around that age Azulon would been a teenager. Aang wouldn’t let the war run on while he’s a fully realised avatar with enough power to stop them.
I didn't like how they completely forgot that Monk Gyatso, however thats spelled, planned to run away with Aang.

@@Darkhelmz I mean, adult Ozai fought against 12 year old Aang (or technically 112, but he's still in a 12 year old body and is physically and mentally 12), so teenage Azulon fighting young adult Aang wouldn't be as weird as middle aged Ozai fighting a twelve year old Aang. I mean, Ozai's own kids are like 14 and 16 in the show.

There is also a theory that actually Yue was supposed to be the new Avatar after Aang which was why she couldn't live without a ghost life inside of her. And it does make sense considering that the new avatar after Aang really came from that very same family.
If Aang was still at the temple during the fire nation's attack, I cannot for a second buy that he would've taken out their army. If he had fought them, he would've caused a lot of damage, yes, but he would've died even with the avatar state. We see in the beginning of ATLA that his avatar state doesn't really give him control of the other elements other than perhaps the ones he's learned and the next he's going to learn. In the beginning, he only bends air and water in the avatar state, and first time he bends earth in the avatar state is after he's been taught water bending.
While he's good at airbending, and the avatar state would definitely enhance that, I simply cannot find it "realistic" that he would beat an entire army of the best firebenders from the fire nation, who was also enhanced by the comet, and live to tell the tale
If Giyatso took out the air in a room and thus killing all Firebenders and himself.... Aang it avatar state could've done than in a larger scale and live...

Considering Yue was born "without a soul" she was probably supposed to be the avatar. I'd actually prefer this over Katara but it would've been nice to see Sokka and Yue having a lovely relationship and Katara and her training together.
Edit: The avatar is a reincarnation of Wan+Rava but if Aang was still alive no reincarnation would've happened so there was no soul that could've ended up in Yue.
Korra even is a relative of Yue so it makes extra sense

Thats not really how it happens. The Avatar is a collection of souls, so the next Avatar is supposed to have one of its own. Otherwise there would be no past avatars, just the same spirit changing bodies like Doctor Who. And honestly, I think a 1000+ years immortality in a cycle of infinite rebirths would drive the avatar INSANE after a couple centuries.

One little factor to completely alter your ending here, aang didn’t just have the ability to take away somebody’s bending, the ability was given to him by the lion turtle, so somewhere in your timeline you would have to include that little side adventure.

tbh i don't think that after so many years, Aang would still try to resolve everything with the air nomads methods, in the original series he didn't want to kill because the things they teached him were still kinda fresh on his mind (from his perspective everything happened a few months ago) but in this timeline, he would have seen the beginning and the unfolding of said war first hand, most probably even witnessing people die in front of him more often than in the cannon timeline (i just remember princess yue's death).
I feel like Princes Yue would've ended up as the avatar personally.

Hello, 2 years late, hopefully comments are still read.
I would just like to throw in an Idea based off of what we've seen in ATLA:
When the air temple would have inevitably been attacked, I don't think Aang would have stayed hidden. If they knew he was truly there, they would stop at nothing to get those doors or wherever he was hidden, open. But like the summer solstice episode, i think Sozin would be shocked to not see a 12 year old boy, but the man he left to die, Roku. Avatar Roku telling the fire nation the truth of his demise would probably lead to them turning on Sozin in the moment.
We need to remember a few key details about Roku. He was well liked, even above Sozin, so much so that when he defected from Sozin, a LARGE group of people tried to leave as well, he only took a small number of people to the island he lived the rest of his days on though. Roku was also the avatar after Kyoshi, who lived 200+ years and would have the backing of the earth kingdom still, as roku did. Avatar Kyoshi was only disliked by one group of people, and those were chin the conqueror's people. Roku's presence alone would cause the fire nation soldiers to question their next move, as we saw with the fire sage's who were against Aang, but knelt when Roku appeared even though they have been double agents for Ozai. So we know that the fire nations respect for Roku lasted well past his death.
All of that being said:
I believe upon hearing that Avatar Roku appeared before Sozin, the morale of the soldiers would decrease because of Sozins reaction to it, which would be one of disbelief. The Earth nation would have heard about the fire nations attack by then and knowing it's the avatar there, they would more than likely advance on the fire nation after the comet was over. Knowing Roku's wisdom, he would have probably done a show of power and then vanished ,probably would have smoke screened onto appa (definitely something that would need to be fleshed out had his showing failed.)
That's where I believe our two versions would conjoin a bit. I do think once Aang woke up, he would still go to Omashu, where he would be safe as the earth kingdom would more than likely fortify Omashu upon learning of Aang's arrival and would have trained him in earth bending. I do think the earth kingdom would definitely team up with the air nomads after finding out about the destruction of the air temple. Air nomads were peaceful and all nations kind of had no issue with them until then.
Zutara fans: Finally, then my dreams of avatar katara and prince zuko would come true!!!

If the Avatar state kicked in Aang could have dealt out some seriously disturbing flames. I don't think they would be Ozai level but Aang would be powered up as well.
Also I do call bs on the Air Temples falling after seeing what 12ish new Airbenders can accomplish in LoK.
@BETHANY R Jimenez I don't see why harmonic convergence would buff the airbenders. They were already the most OP benders outside of bloodbenders. Aang could humiliate master firebenders as a pre-pubecant child and Tenzin kicked more *ss than any other master bender we saw in Korra. Not to mention how strong Zaheer was.
The firebenders would be strong but I think that with Aang's help they could have held their ground pretty easily if not literally conquered the Fire Nation on their own.

Yue wasn't old enough to be born and the way the avatar cycle goes is alternating from north to south with each water tribe avatar. So they had to be a southerner

Fun fact,the comet of suzin is coming back in 15 years in Korra’s timeline as it has been 70/71 years since Aang’s fight with Ozai and korra is now 21 years old after all TLOK seasons so in 15 years korra will be facing maybe a new threat same as Aang with the comet.
My favorite part of this video is the fact thst without irohs and zukos redemption arc, team aang would not have succeeded. Iroh mourned the loss of his son thinking if only he had been a better fsther
Zuko also spent most of the series feeling like a failure because of his father, but you put those two together in team aang and the world is right. All of the failure and destruction was eventually part of a bigger plan.
Aang had a fire bending friend (kuzan) too... Its safe to say that he already has a team avatar. Male earth bender: bunmi (if he knew a lot already), kuzan (if he does not take his nations side) and maybe a water tribe female that could heal or something.

I like the direction this took. My only gripe would be how would Katara learn how to airbend. In this timeline, with Aang passing and leaving no heirs (presumably unless I missed something), there would be no one around to teach Katara airbending. Maybe the former Avatars teach her, spiritually?
I know this is an old comment but there'd likely still be a few air benders, in the comics we see the fire nation using traps to capture the remaining air benders, that weren't in the temples when they attacked (they are called nomads for a reason) and with Aang still around its likely some will survive.
Yea I think with Aang around he would’ve rallied the survivors and reclaimed at least one air temple. As a twist in this timeline Ty lee is kataras air bending instructor. Her family didn’t have to hide for long in the fire nation bc Aang came to the rescue and so their air bending and spirituality survived. This version of Ty lee is getting bored being just another prodigy air bender sister and gets her chance to do something different when she bumps into the new avatar. Oh and she still can block chi

@Marcus Pickett This was mostly so they would not be killed. Had aang still be there most of them would have been with him. They only didn't in the Last Airbender because they had lost hope of the avatar ever returning.
@Marcus Pickett without an interventive force like the Avatar, threat of death was what probably made them submit. But had Aang remained, there's a possibility of salvation. They may rebel, perhaps in secret and help the Avatar to restore order to the Fire Nation.
Not all Fire Nation peoples shared Sozin's ideals for domination. Heck even after all that time, there was even still 1 Fire Sage loyal to the Avatar. More were likely so in the early years of the war, before the Avatar's absence really took its toll.

If Aang did not run away he would see his peoples getting hurt that would force him in the avatar state and destroy the fire nation
I think yue was supposed to be the avatar but since anng was still living in the avatar state the avatar spirit wasn’t with her so that’s why she needed the moon spirit

If Katara were to be the next Avatar in the cycle, She probably would have learned from one of the lost air-benders. Possibly Via the white Lotus or the Acolytes of The Avatar.
Also, if he hadn’t left, Giatzo probably would have run WITH Aang and not been there for the Fire Nation attack. He would have guided Aang through his trainig in his pree-teens with the White Lotus or the Acolytes of the Avatar. He would fully understand the depth of the cruelty of the fire nation as they attack the Earth Kingdoms where he will do most of his hiding.
By the time he is ready he would probably be way more aggressive and way better prepared. He probably wouldn’t be AS trusting as he was in the last Airbender, but because of Giazo, he’d still have a genteel heart and he probably would have handled the Fire Lord like he did Commander Jou, and often how he’d handled Zuko but not holding back.
