The Top FIVE things that WEAR OUT on a RAM 1500 Truck - TruckTalk

  • In this video we discuss the top items or parts that wear out on a Dodge RAM 1500 pickup truck. There are many things that can break on a truck but these items seem to be the common ones to fail on these RAM 1500 trucks.
    1. The first thing to wear out on a RAM 1500 truck are the goodyear tires. The tires supplied on the truck have terrible traction and terrible life. These tires wear out very quickly and are a common complaint from RAM truck owners.
    2. The second item to wear out on RAM 1500 trucks are the upper ball joints. These ball joints usually wear out on the truck causing a clunking sound and are typically a wear item. The design of the upper control arms forces many owners to have to replace the whole UCA or upper control arm just to replace a worn ball joint.
    3. The third item to wear commonly on the RAM1500 is the driver seat bolster. The fabric and cushion in the seat bolster is common to wear out, rip or break down.
    4. The 4th common item to wear is the exhaust manifold bolts. These bolts are known to snap on 5.7L HEMI engines resulting in a loud audible exhaust ticking. To fix this you will need to extract the broken exhaust manifold studs and install new bolts and studs which can be a costly and time consuming repair.
    5. The fifth most common wearing item is the tie rod ends on the RAM 1500 trucks. These joints are common to wear and this problem is more common with lifted trucks or trucks with larger and heavier wheels placing more pressure on these ball joints.

I have a 2013 Ram 1500 Sport and my EPS rack and pinion broke on me yesterday! A replacement costs around $1300 but I found one at an Auto Salvage yard for $450. I'm going to be doing the swap over the weekend.
This is my 2nd Ram. My first was an 04 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 that I put 210K miles on then traded it in on this one.

Just stumbled across your channel and this video, great job on your videos. To the point, with a little extra information, good stuff. I own a 2010 SLT with 96K on it. Had a water pump go at about 90K, and the heater core just went, other than that, no problems. Got the truck at a steal, so I'm not going to complain.
So without having watched this, yesterday I just replaced my Upper Control Arms with Mevotechs as I swapped out my stock front shocks with Bilstein Adjustables to level the front end, in preparation for upgrading the tires. There's your first two items.
When I bought the truck 3 years ago, with 79K on it, the front seat was ripped wide open. Dealer re-upholstered the seat and I instantly put seat covers on. Also installed some step rails, which prevent the third issue you note.
As I did the UCAs I also did the sway bar end-ties. This is related to #5, but I'll keep an eye on the tie rod ball joints. If they go, not a big deal, those are fairly easy and inexpensive.
The last item you mention, the vinyl, I just did this morning after watching your other video. I'll post there too. Took me like 15-20 minutes to get the old ones off and another 10 minutes with WD-40 and a microfiber cloth to clean it up. My truck is Beige/Gold, and I really like the way it looks now. The vinyl was kind of messed up when I bought it, and the dealer wanted to charge me like $100 per pillar if I wanted them redone. Once I saw your other vid that showed the paint and clearcoat was under the vinyl, good bye!
The last item on your list, I haven't encountered yet, and hope it doesn't come up. If I knew about the manifold bolts earlier, I might have tried it out, but now I feel I'm asking for trouble if I touch them.

Seats- yes, clothe tears and the frame exposed
Upper A arms w/ ball joints- 170k when i changed mine.

      Upper A-arms

Replaced rear end, bearing went bad and tore up the differential. Both front wheel hubs. Most of those are due from normal wear and tear.

Our family has an 08 (240K), 13 (115K) , and now a 19 Ram 1500. Bought each one new. We try to get 250K from a truck. The 08 and 13 have the 8-speed transmission. We knew about the upper and tie rod ends, so we kept the standard tires/wheel sizes and no lift. 08 had a 4WD issue this past winter, but turned out to be a relay. 13 has had no mechanical issues, but I am concerned about the manifold bolts on this one. Seat bolster issues occur in all trucks I have had. We started using some tough seat covers to protect them...right when we buy the vehicle. I also had a 96 Dodge 1500 I got new with the 360. We got 250K out of that one. Track bars replaced at 180K. A buddy needed it, so sold it to him. He took it to 350K. Rumor has it some high school kid is still driving it.

My five issues have been(in no particular order) fuel pump, wheel bearings, rust at the front panels of driver door(at less than 60 grand on both 2009 and 2014) leaking sunroofs, and by pass coolant valve. I love Dodge but they all have different issues.

For really good stainless steel headers is about $600+ to fit stock. powder coated is near $1000.

Bought my 2015 Ram 2500 on 6/2015 in Long Beach Ca.. I had to replace the upper/lower ball joints 10/2016 at just over 36000 miles. The Firestones Transforce from the factory wore out fast, maybe from the rotation with bad ball joints. Not sure. I called the dealer to let them know about the ball joints & also I had an intermittent vibration in the rear of the truck that no one could figure out. Truck was all stock. I have literally baby'd this truck because I'm an older man and I stay on the black top 99.5% of the time. The only thing I had pulled with it was a 2000# utility pipe trailer maybe 6 times. The Dealer Warranty guy told me in a snotty way "well you must've been rough on it to wear out the ball joints that fast" He also told me that they probably wouldn't cover the ball joints even if truck was still below the warranty mileage. Wow! $50,000+ purchase! That kind of pissed me off and I told him that this will be the last damn truck I buy from them. I bought 4 new stock 18" Michelin Defenders and still had the vibration. I bought a 2" leveling kit w/ Bilstein 5100's .....now the vibration is gone. Other than that, now at 74000 miles the tires still have plenty of tread and I do love the truck. No other problems at all.

Hey Michael you should take it to the Orange Coast RAM dealer. They seemed way better when I dropped into that dealership and had some warranty work done. Give it a try and let me know!

The reason I bought my truck in Long Beach was that I was visiting an in-law. I live in AZ. I was driving around looking at the Silverado's at Chevy dealerships as I always wanted one. Chevrolet wouldn't deal with me very good so I left. Went to a Dodge dealer and they did. My trucks already way past the mileage now for waranty work. But like I say I've had zero problems since then. I tried out a Silverado last year and after driving my Ram 2500 I just didn't like the Chevy Silverado but jmo. I thought it was smaller & not as much room and power wise I liked my Cummins better.

    • @Everclearish
      @Everclearish Před 6 lety

I've always kept up maintenance on every truck I've owned which has been more than several over my lifetime and I never had a ball joint go out at that low of mileage. The wheel bearings on mine were fine just the ball joints. I replaced the ball joints with Moog/Mopar that seem to be doing great. Have you seen problems with wheel bearings at low mileage on Rams?

I have an 18' Rebel and I totally agree about the tires. Instead of good year my truck came from the factory with Toyo and they were alright at first. But recently when I was driving in the rain I totally slid during a turn and I was pretty much driving sideways around a corner lol
Haven't picked up a new set of tires yet but you can bet that's something I'll be doing before the next rainstorm that comes through haha

Got a 2015 with 42k miles. Been following the owners manual for maintenance but am worried about other things I should be doing. Is there a list of additional repairs and mileage that I should reference? Like transmition filter replacement, and things mentioned here, i.e. manifold bolts and ball joints.

Never ever let any shop put in the cheaper Dextron (GM) Transmission even fluid insist on the Mopar Fluids such as AT4 or whatever your service manual calls for, at 100k miles a new Transmission filter would be a great idea. Transmissions can be a weak link so let a Mopar dealer with a good service reputation do the work. Avoid allowing general repair shops or any other non Chrysler to do any transmission maintenance or repair work.

Rams are simple to work on they are a mix of old and new technology that’s why you see more auto mechanics owning these trucks over Ford and Chevy. Even if you buy a high mileage Ram in great condition and had to throw an engine in it your still ahead of the game considering the price of a new truck. These are a bargain.

I have a 2011 1500 Sport completely stock. I have 140,000 miles on it and so far I have only had to replace the Battery, Brakes, and a tune up. You are right about the tires but so far I guess I have been lucky. The only other issue I have had is with the key FOB. One would lock the truck and roll down the windows with it sitting on a desk. I have since used the other one but it will not lock the doors or remote start.
