I found Sean about 6 months ago and instantly realized the goldmine I found. When I saw he was a logic user I was hooked haha. I started on Logic and will die with it. No other DAW compares. I'm sorry but it's the truth haha.
@@kitsunestudios3754 mi
@@kitsunestudios3754 maybe for mixing lol but try FL
Great insight! I now realize, that my transients and dynamics should sound the same after I master, only louder. Thanks!
took the last 3 hours watching your videos learned a lot... I sub! please keep them coming.
glad to hear it!
Same here lol This is honestly better than watching TV
Dope comp

1st I put a like, 2nd I learn. My God you are good. And what I love about you is that you are not one of those "try hard to be liked" guys, you are straight quality, facts and such a likeable person. Sorry for a long comment, but you just inspired me my friend. Keep up!
thanks so much Bosom, glad it inspired you :)
God bless you.🙏🏾🙏🏾

glad to hear it Daniel! 🙌
BEAUTIFUL tutorial Sean! One of my favorites from you. You're definitely helping the masses of producers and engineers with your tutorials. Also, interesting to see how similar our Fab Filter Presets are haha!
+Adam Peter Shinn glad to hear it man! gotta love fabfilter :)
This was super helpful for me. I've been doing a lot to work on mastering my works, this cleared up some of my concerns. I would worry about clipping constantly even without hearing any distortion. Thanks again. I watch all your vids.
glad to hear it Ryan! 🙌
@@SeanDivine Me too man. God bless!!!
This is good stuff my dude
Top guy!!!
Thank my mixes are sounding a whole lot better💯
You are good man! I found you on YT and I've been watching some of your videos and I have to tell you that you might not have the "name" or subscribers amount of some other known mix engineers but you definitely get that professional sounding tracks (mix AND ARRANGEMENTS!). Congratulations and keep up the good work! You've got one more sub ;)
+Patxi Peñas thank you so much!
Currently in the music production program and I'm glad I ran into this video as it helps clear up more! Looking forward to your content :) subscribed kind sir!
glad to hear it! welcome to the channel 🙌
I know this is an older video and im sure you have better mastering techniques but this one bar far has gotten my music sounding impressive and damn close to standard quality sound to this day and I still seem to come back to this video very often! thank you!
Glad to hear it's still helpful 🙏🙌
You're a saint man, thank you for this info.
Glad to help!
Thank you brother ;) From Russia with Love! Waiting for more videos
+Nikita Konyakhin :)
For this video - you got urself another sub! Great content on your channel!
I recommend waves h-eq for a low roll-off, rather than pro-q 2.
Sweet!!!! thank you so much... u r a breath of fresh air on the youtube DYI music world. So calm and cool... I will follow you now. I could use a bit of guidance through the maze of mastering and mixing plug-in world... I work only with Logic Pro X stuff and am older and new to this. I am also a musician who just wants to compose and create nice sounding instrumentals.
+Tilley Road Affair Productions no problem, glad to hear they are helpful for you :)
man when will you have a sale on your course bro, because your sound is unique and i need help
Brilliant tutorial, thanks a bundle! A Waves bundle! :D
welcome :)
Great job! I can't afford Logic and don't have a Mac. I'm very humbly using Audacity for mastering stereo tracks and am learning how to use EQ and limiting in very spare amounts to up the presence of the stereo track. One thing that works for me really well is to simply use the "Amplify" plug in to even out problem spots or to reduce or gain the entire track. I'm working on a power pop/rock CD and I'm putting all the levels to peak at around -3 dB. Do you think that's overdoing it? Thanks in advance should you have the time to reply.
Good stuff. I love the C4 and been using that baby for years. With the PuigTec you kept the bandwidth on sharp. For general tone shaping wouldn't it get a bit peaky and be best on a broader setting?
it's all preference, I like that option also for certain material!
Thanks Sean! You are so incredibly helpful...words cannot express! Keep "em coming! By the way, when will you be doing your live hangouts? I'd love to get in on it. Thanks.
+Bill Phillips glad to hear that Bill! should be doing another hang out soon and will announce a time once it's lined up!
UR THE BOSS!
Can u make a tutorial for the mastering with vocal too?
check out the mastering r&b tutorial on my channel :)
dope video bro didn't know slate had so many other controls for the limiter sections
+Lexadon 10 yea, the transient controls are nice!
Can you please make a video of showing how to make reference from another song when mastering
Is it ok to MIX in the early stage allready to RMS level? And just use a limiter as a brickwall without gaining any level? This way you have the right level and can control the dynamics during mixing, whats your opinion about this Sean?
absolutely. that's my preferred method :)
Thanks for the video. Nice stuff. Maybe would´ve been even better to show more plugins but Waves.
Um, sir sean how much dB of headroom is the best before it goes to mastering process?? thanks
Sean, I come from a film sound design background and I'm recently producing music. Your videos are incredibly helpful. I'm wondering how to tell when there are phase issues, how to tell what's causing it, and how to fix it? Thanks.
the easiest way is to switch your mix to mono. If there are phase issues, certain elements will either disappear or won't sound right. You'll know it when you hear it. As far as what's causing it... could be a number of things. Improper mic placement during the recording stage, using wide stereo processing, stereo delays, etc. The fixing part depends on where you are in the process. If you're already in mastering, there's not a ton you can do accept maybe some mid / side processing to narrow the stereo field in the problem area.
great vid, well explained and easy to follow, but its the fact id hate to perfect mastering as its a 1time bar at a time, every bar will be different but most when any sound add or take aways!! like the big drum thumps, but that is my concept. cool vid.
FG-X sounded great.
I know you said not one limiter is better than the other, it depends on the situation but if i only have money for one right now, is there a goto workhorse brickwall limiter you would recommend over another?
Waves L3 :)
20:20 So what's the reason the attack is 10 seconds? Would it still limit sounds above the threshold?
yes. generally speaking, longer attack time / shorter release times give you more punch and transparency
@Sean Divine I was gonna ask why didn't you use the Waves Loudness Meter but then I looked at the published date. lol There is so many ways to master a song using various plugins, to me the importance is being objective, explaining the whys behind adding and/ or subtracting, and letting your mixes reflect those ideas You clearly did that for me. I'm curious to know why 11 people thumbs down; thats still feedback but it would have been helpful to know why-dialogue is important.
thanks Palmz, agreed, just offering my perspective. Glad it was helpful for you!
Sean Divine You're welcome sir.
you official . I love ya beats ! how much do u charge to mix big bro ? mix a song and how much to master a single song
+jay Ginger thanks! seandivine.com/mixing-request/
So I mixed a beat into a Fabfilter L per settings given by you in a previous mixing video. Should I remove the limiter before bouncing my two track out of Ableton Live before mastering?
if someone else will be doing the mastering, I would recommend removing any limiting / compression from the master bus and reducing the master output so there is some headroom
Awesome! But if I plan on tackling mastering my own tracks, is it fine to bounce without removing the limiter? Also, people like DJ Vespers have kind of discouraged me from mastering myself with his video on prepping a track mastering..he says the producers shouldn't attempt to master their own music if they plan to release professionally. If you don't mind could you give me a quick opinion on whether a producer who (is) decent at mixing should attempt to master a track with vocals? Also thank you for your content man, you've put a lot of people on the road to success with your tutorials!
If you do find phasing issues, what will you do?
in the mastering stage? in most cases, contact the mixing engineer (if I didn't mix it) and see what can be fixed
Hey sean, i was mastering multiple tracks in pro tools and i noticed that the tempo was off on two of the 6 stereo tracks i was working on. how important is it to keep the mixing tempo in mastering and do i have to keep the original tempo for all the tracks. the other four sound right but they vary in tempo in the mixing stage. thanks
Hey Christopher, it's typically not as important to have the tempo locked in for mastering, although it is best practice
Thanks sean, i'll try and figure out why the song feels slower.
sir what type of file are you mastering?? is it a wav file or a mp3 file?? Coz I Don't know which file is good to put into mastering.
I always try to master with a high quality WAV if possible
alright thank you sir ;-)
Do you ever use tape plugins on your master chain?
occasionally but usually just in the mixing stage
Did you produce a marpo song? I'm from the Czech Republic and I'm a marpo fan and I've been watching you for two years. I'm also making a rap and learning from you. Thanks for your work. 🙂
Thanks! Yes czcams.com/video/DUuD7MH0Wx4/video.html
Nice job! 👍
thanks!
Does it matter that the plug in is clipping?
depends! can you hear it distorting? are you doing mastering in the same session (on the stereo bus)?
Let's say I produce a beat and master it. Then I record a rap song with that beat and I master the rap song afterwards. Is that a problem ("over-mastering")?
ideally, you only want to master the song once especially limiting / compression
makes sense. it would lose a lot of the transients. thanks a lot!
how much you charge to mix my track?
and why your track is doubled
it's not doubled, it's a stereo track
i did you get that double track like is it a process
arent you supposed to leave some headroom when it comes to mastering?? I always leave -4 - -6 db because i was always thought that was what you were supposed to do in order for a clean master
Yes
Sean ain't supposed to master only when the voice had been laid on the beat? cause i never really master my beats i only master the whole thing together.
Right, this was just as an example. If you have a vocals I would definitely wait to master.
thank you sean!!!
may i recommend you dont use waves C4. use Fabfilter Pro MB instead. trust me :)
Or Waves own LinMB if you can’t deal with Fabfilter CPU usage. The LinMB is more transparent in the crossovers than the C4 is.
That limiter is pumping like buggery - and not in a good way I'm afraid ...
the sound is pumping. maybe the sidechain. is too much. rest is good. i know its a mixing thing
the Pro-L caused too much pumping at those settings, for my taste.
How the hell can you thumbs down these vids? Oh wait I know if you don't have the skill to make your shit sound like this. I get it now ok cool.
I also noticed that you're driving into your plugins too hot.
