I like that the Lich talks more as he appears more. It’s like he starts to respect Finn more and more, seeing him as an actual threat closer to his level.

Which is odd cause the Lich should be more aware of Finn's potential. The Lich was a catalyst comet, as was Finn.I would have thought the multi-dimensional creature with deep knowledge of the workings of the universe would have some idea of that.

Farmworld litch is more arrogant as he is the only one with his level of power in the world and after the multiverse hand he can rest assured his plans will prevail somewhere

I like how most Adventure Time villains are pretty goofy, then you've got the Lich who is basically the literal embodiment of the end of all life
This is actually noted in the pilot notes for the pitch for Adventure time, on the lich’s page, the first line is literally “The Lich king is not funny. The Lich king embodies absolute evil”
His art style is often very different too, way more detailed and with more hard lines. He looks striking compared to the other characters

Did anyone else notice that Billie’s face is clearly in a constant state of distress/horror(in most shots at least), but when the Lich is without purpose in Prismo’s time room, Billie’s face is smiling and seemingly at ease?
I’d love to think that’s intentional. It’s absolutely horrifying.

@mystr0696 not necessarily true, he can leave, he just chooses not to. The reason? Peppermint says something along the lines of "why isn't he killing ALL OF US?" Death himself doesn't even object and he's right next to Peppermint, nor prismo, because the lich can't kill, he can't leave until he sees an opportunity. Another reason why the lich is far more dangerous then many think, death and prismo himself don't object to Peppermints worry with "We can take care of him" they know he's really just as powerful even if in different ways. Death even fears him, the lich is underrated inverse power wise tbh

Initially he's introduced as what you'd think a Lich would be. An incredibly powerfull necromancer who managed to cheat death and has obtained more knowledge and power than any sorcerer could ever possess without going down the same dark path
But over the course of the show we learn that the Lich is a *universal constant*
An avatar of death and decay who is trying to understand chaos incarnate, Golb, only to realise he tried to fathom something that was never intended to be fathomed and becoming damned for eternity
I think it's even more interesting if you think of all those Tetris blocks as a Lich themselves.
Considering I have absolutely no idea what happened in the show, this is my head canon lmao.
The lich that we see in Fiona and Cake is the EXACT same lich that made his original wish to prismo and disappeared (the killing all life one). Ooo Prime was officially WIPED of all life during the Farmworld arc until Jake wished Prismo to go back in time and changed the Lich's wish. Thus Ooo prime was split in 2 seperate realities, one of the Lich's making and one of Jake's interference.
Ooo prime wasn’t wiped because the Lich wish got its own reality. That’s why we see the lich fading away in the wish room

That's what the Lich never understood. Chaos isn't death, it's life. It's the struggle of the unknown, the torment of what is next, the uncertainty of chance. In death, the chaos ends. In all his studies he never came upon the realization that in his creation of chaos, he possessed an end--he aimed for Order as a servant of chaos. Golb never acted in pure death and destruction; it acted in mania and madness, corrupting everything around it. The Lich was never going to succeed, because his goal from the start was to fail Golb in not understanding what it was Golb wanted.

I genuinely think that the interaction with GOLB and Lich changes how we knew Lich. We always thought he was the embodiment of evil, a constant that cannot change and the end of all things. But the interaction recontextualizes a lot about him. He isn't some powerful embodiment or the end of all things. In the end, he's just a small being that was led by a god he didn't understand to give him a purpose because he had none. And what does he get for all his efforts? To become a part of the other many failed scholars of GOLB.
Tbh, he was kinda perfect until they had to show him talking to golbetty like that, kind of disappointed.

1: The Cosmic Imagination, who created GOLB as It is literally the sentient multiverse according to the Enchiridion, most likely Prismo, and Scarabs "boss."
2: The Enchiridion, The Book which is not a book, The Enchiridion is actually a nigh-omnipotent omniscient entity that takes the form of a book, and in its own words, it will judge the multiverse at the end of all things.
3. Coconteppi, The Primordial Monster. Who is the originator of all magic, (which would technically include the Cosmic Imagination, as the cosmic imagination is MADE OF magic.) Coconteppi has magic in its most primal and chaotic state, and can cast any spell it can think of. Some spells in adventure time have union which GOLB is weak too.
4. The Lich himself, The Lich is stated to be equal to Hunson Abadeer, who considers The Lich his only and equal rival, Hunson is stated to be a primordial monster in the Ooo Encyclopedia (might not be canon, unsaid.) And literally one shot GOLB in the comics, The Lich should be equal to that. And The Lich is a catalyst comet of which scales to Finn, who could defeat The Primordial Elementals, who existed "before all this." according to one of them in the comics. This show literally nerfed The Lich.
5. The Purple Catalyst comet, The Purple Catalyst comet said it exist "in a new mode of existence," meaning it could merge with The Cosmic Imagination on a whim. The Purple Catalyst comet scales to The Blue Catalyst Comet (Finn) and The Green Catalyst Comet (The Lich.)
The Lich was just the perfect villain for this show. The way he so perfectly contrasts against the silly whimsical nature of Adventure Time, it’s usual bright and vibrant kingdoms being replaced by a gritty disheveled corpse of a creature eerily talking down to all he comes across. The way he commands every scene that he’s in, showing himself as a force that just can’t be fucked around with, it’s such a brilliant character that easily stands out from all others.
It’s genuinely fascinating seeing one of my favorite villains in TV animation in such an emotional state like this. We knew that The Lich wanted to destroy all life in Ooo in the name of Golb, but I don’t think many of us ever truly stopped to think about what would happen if he succeeded in his goal. Unlike regular Lich and Farmworld Lich, this is a version of the Lich who *has* succeeded. He did everything he set out to do for what’s basically his god, and what did this god reward him with, *nothing.* This Lich was left unsatisfied and lost all purpose as a result. After all, why devote your existence to a higher being and even destroy all life in your entire universe in their name when you’ll be given nothing in return. The last we see of him he’s literally yelling to Golb if he did something wrong and if there’s more needed of him, only for Golb to kill him and turn his body into a literal Tetris block. It actually makes you question everything you knew about The Lich up to this point and even makes you feel a bit sympathy for him which you definitely couldn’t say about him in the past. What a great villain. What a great show.
Also remember, that isn't golb that the lych dedicated all of his efforts to him, that's Betty, no longer the god the lych was working for
the funny thing is that after Sweet P slayed Lich the last time the dude DIED. Like literally died and went to death realm like every living creature does. That means he's not on GOLB or Orgalorg level of power, he's just a jerk like vampire king from vampire universe. And the reason why he felt that bad is also the sign what he's not anything even compared to GOLB, just a random lost soul who got some power but still lost to Billy, Finn and Sweet P
This right, this is exactly how I interpreted the Lich. He was never an actual force of nature but a zealot who proclaimed himself to understand the will of Golb… when he couldn’t have been further from the truth.
In the end he wasted his life and I can’t say that he didn’t deserve it, no one demanded he do any of the things he did.

The fact that Golb didn't even kill the Lich, only the Lich from the universe in which he extinguished all life, shows how powerful the Lich is. The guy has so much power that the embodiment of absolute chaos cannot get rid of him permanently, even while it is severely influenced by Betty's psyche. I imagine that before Betty's psyche merged with Golb, there was nothing Golb would have done to the Lich, he would have let him succeed and fail in his task in a billion worlds and would have never rewarded or tried to stop him.
i mean the lich can die seeing the farm world episode, if it wasnt for his hand dissapearing he wouldve died, and my guess is that either the teris blocks are the liches that won or people who annoyed golb, making golb trap them forever
He is the green comet, after all even if he dies, another reincarnation of destruction would take his place like the same thing happens with Finn (The blue comet).
It's a endless cycle, Lich destroying every lifeform like he did using his wish was his best outcome and still he become depressive and completely hollow of any motivation or goal. In the end he is just a sad existence fated to fail regardless of his outcome and effort put in. @@vavalaz
No, the Lich who extinguished all life is the original lich that make the wish to end all life in that universe in Prismo's room.
The Lich who wished for Finn and Jake safely returned to OOO was the one in the alternative universe created by Prismo.
So the original Lich is the same as the alternative one, basically not powerful enough to be scared by Golb. Betty Golb could obliterated him in a note if she wanted to but she just didn't.
I think the implication is less that he is formidable and more than GOLBetty is still a chaotic being. It may not be their design.

Well all 3 variants are still alive technically first the og lich is the one who got turned into tetris he is still alive he just got imprisoned in the hollow block made from his own bone second the Jake wish copy of lich/sweet p is a giant in a 1000 or so years he just got a program reboot to be a normal being and lastly jakelich from farmworld is a hand in multiple universes in some he succeeded in some he fell in og universe he is now stuck in death world but he is technically still alive
Yeah he’s in every conceivable universe now or something like that. My headcannon is that every single one of those blocks in the golb area is a version of the lich. Something that golb doesn’t like since he wants to spread chaos NOT death. But the lich always wins in the end.. He IS The end

You are an absolute legend to have gathered literally almost every single scene and appearance of the Lich, I hope this video doesn’t get taken down for copyright reasons. This video is a testament to what a fantastic villain and character the Lich was… and what’s crazy is that Ron Perlman doesn’t remember his time as him, he just went in and acted spooky and then left. He didn’t know the full story even and yet he slayed, no one can be the Lich but Ron.
It makes sense that Ron doesn't remember voicing him, literally, only says his own name once. So it's a little understandable, granted I think it's hard not to remember voicing a character that badass.

15:48 Seems Jake actually did Present world Lich a favor and saved him when he chronologically changed his Wish for he would ended up wasting his chances on a short cut which would’ve ended purpose as well as robbing himself of glory. Lich should’ve been grateful when he murdered Old man Prismo.
This Lich just made a wish to end all life and that was it, there was no effort or journey just the end result and thus no fulfillment. The one that gets taken to the Citadel had a much better plan in terms of spreading chaos by releasing all the inter-dimisonal criminals to do his bidding. Had The Lich succeeded with this plan he would've likely been more satisfied, and meeting Golb would've gone completely different for him.
The thing is that the lich who got sent to the citadel is a copy made from Jake's wish and the one who got tetrised is the og lich this way prismos rule of 1 wish per creature still applies

One thing that makes me happy is the "Fall Speech" or the Lich turning into Sweet P wasn't even the halfway point of the Lich. When I first watched the episode of the Lich turning into Sweet P back when the episode first aired, I thought it was over for the Lich for good. But here thanks to this video it proves we got more than double the Lich screen time after Escape From The Citadel.

GOLB may have been Adventure Time's final antagonist, but the Lich was the true main antagonist. The chaotic evil that balances out Finn's lawful good.

This dude had less than 20 minutes of screen time but is such a HUGELY INTEGRAL VILLAIN!!! Absolutely love that. When he’s on the screen you know a monumental change is about to occur.
It’s interesting how little we see the Lich in his true form. Either his true form is how he appeared trapped in the tree resin, and since then he’s just been wearing the flesh and skeletons of everyone else, or his true form genuinely is just the skeleton and even that first appearance he was wearing someone else’s skin. But either way most of the time he’s wearing Billy’s flesh, possessing PB or the snail, possessing Jake, or embodying Jake’s hand.
We never got to see his true form
His true form is basically what connects him to all his vessels and avatars
He is a god that lives in a higher form of existence, and not in this physical plane of existence

"Mountains of broken bodies, beneath the wheel."
And how calm he says it, really hits different.
It's kind of funny if you consider that the litch sees himself as not a cog but a wheel and in the end he was alone atop a mountain of broken bodies

i tend to forget how expressive the lich is sometimes, he isnt entirely monotone, but its not like he expresses sadness or anger, he expresses joy and pride in killing people. i think it kinda humanizes him
The embodiment of entropy in form of the Lich. Among the best I've ever seen. To me he is subservient to neither order or chaos. He is the end of all things, the return to 0 to before monsters and reset anew. As he always exists to do he is never stopped only delayed

Idk if anyone mentioned but its kinda cool that the "monkeys paw" that Prismo warns abt still applies to this wish reality. As he's left without purpose.
I think the main reason the lich was so scary is that he sounds normal... Not cartoony evil but just like a normal dude.

I almost feel bad for The Lich. His primary function is causing mass death, but he was made that way. It’s not like it was his choice. Even when he did win in his universe, he still lost.
He’s one of those characters that is evil, but we never really questioned what would happen to how he would act if he did win. The Fiona and Cake series nailed it pretty well.
If we ever get a season 2 of Fiona and Cake, I hope we’ll see The Lich again.

I know it isn't the case, but the Lich yelling Billy's name like Billy would makes me think of the idea that there's still some semblance of Billy in him, or that the Lich is identifying himself with Billy after already having to pretend to be him for however long between his death and Finn's help for the enchiridion.
Again, I know it probably isn't the case but I like the uncertainty that head cannon gives me

Also, editing this, its also because of how it feels like he just, looks past you, with no life in his eye's.
Something that just dawned on me is that those green blocks represent universes, revealed when Simon touched several of them and ended up in a different world each time.
So Golbetty took this being of pure death and entropy and remade him into a new universe.
It's poetically ironic. The Lich destroyed life and wanted purpose, and Golbetty gave him the purpose of becoming the genesis of all the life of a new universe. Whether this is redemption or punishment for the Lich is hard to say.

Yknow i think i understand why the lich was ignored by Golb, even before Betty fused with him.
Looking back to the point where the Lich wishes for the extinction of all life in Prismo's room. If you think about it, the lich never actually accomplishes his goal by wishing for the extinction of all life. All he does is create a separate reality where everyone is dead, meanwhile Ooo prime remains untouched.
Assuming the lich who made that wish and the one we see in Fionna and cake are the same person. The Lich essentially imprisoned himself without ever realizing it.
That is s good point and explains why Golb didn't listen in the first place

what I find interesting is that the physical forms of the Lich get defeated rather easily, yet the Lich himself will always survive and always come back. Not even wishing him from existence is enough to keep him away.
He is not so much a physical fighter, but a spell caster, and he has time on his side . He can stop fin and Jake so simply with the word fall, it really showed how much he chooses to hold back

The fact that he has little screentime is kinda genius. Villains who appear a lot lose their intimidation quickly, but since The Lich appears a lot less often, whenever he appears, shits about to get real

They didn’t forget. The hands simply weren’t relevant to the story they wanted to tell in the season.

My most nightmarefuel realisation in relation to this villain is the one I just had. He was turned into a tetris block. He is not the only such exact tetris block present. This leaves me with the VERY concerning question, of how many followers of Golb managed to succeed in doing their gods bidding, only to be granted that selfsame back-stabbing end. None of them ever knowing about the others, not even in true death. Worse even, since the blocks may yet be undead in eternal unlife. A real serious case of 'I have no mouth and I must scream'. So many universes and so many potentially stuck in eternal suffering souls of the literal damned. O_O
The VA of the lich did such an amazing job. Every time I hear the lich talk, I just get chills. Great job

Holy hell. I guess that when they put out the blu ray or some sort of high definition release they changed farmworld Lich's line from 'Everywhere you find nothing' to 'Everywhere you will die' and it'd kinda sick.
I think there's like 3 versions of that scene, on the streaming platform i watched it on he said something along the lines of:
