Welcome back to Casually Competitive MTG! We are a group of friends who enjoy playing fast-paced, semi-competitive EDH / cEDH games. In today’s game we have some Magic: The Gathering Commander gameplay with a matchup between Meren of the Clan Nel Toth; Ruric Thar, the Unbowed; Sliver Overlord; and Kodama of the East Tree / Kraum, Ludevic's Opus. Loving the Meren representation
"Sliver" and "Under-Dog" are two things I never thought I'd hear in the same sentence
The Exarch on the table combined with the Chain of Vapor was a MASSIVE RED FLAG that Jordan was about to go off...
I enjoy adding in the shorter games. Get a feel for all the types of games.

Love seeing both the faster and slower games, showcases what the decks are capable of as well as what inhibits them. Gives watchers a better understanding of how to both play and/or combat the decks.

I love ruric thar. I play him in all formats legal. Modern its in my scapeshift 3 separate commander brews and in a legacy brew. Keep up the thar content i cannot get enough

Nice to see Meren in CEDH and just like in my non CEDH games everyone hates on the Meren deck. I feel for Bill . I like the format. So if it isn't to much for you a short game is a neat idea.
It's the best feeling when people focus on you as Meren and let others win because of it. 🤣

It's so interesting to see this videos and you ranking the decks the way you do (compared to cedh top tier decks) so that your decks are a 6 or 7..
And then I see so many people asking out for suggestions for cards for their "cedh" decks in Facebook groups etc always makes me think plenty of people are waaay to of with their point of view on cedh or there really are so many people with 10er decks.. I can't believe it. Nonetheless I always feel bad seeing your decks with those manabases, very low cmcs and pure combo win cons that I think the gap between upgraded precons, which are meant to be a 4 to 5 to what you play is waaaaay to big :D therefore I love the content because it's way different from what I brew and like to play, so it gives a nice touch to my angle of view

Great video. I think you could do with shrinking the size of the overlay by about 20-30%, though, just so we can see the boards a bit better.

Not using the chain with a heavily telegraphed combo ready for action seems weird. Still great games, never seize to enjoy your content!

Just a slight correction: Disciple of the Vault only makes ONE opponent lose life.
It doesn't impact this particular game, but it might be relevant if an opponent is feeding off death/sacrifice triggers.
Another real case would be that Veil of Summer will protect them from Disciple of the Vault

Incredible how none of the guys could deal with a Protean Hulk there doing nothing for 3 or 4 turns...

How exactly would you suggest to get rid of it? ;) I mean Assassin's Trophy wouldn't do it. ;)
edit: I have made a research for you. Ruric Thar didn't have an answer for Protean Hulk at all, Kraum and Kodama had 2 answers provided they had counterspell for Hulk too. Sliver Overlord had 3 answers for it only two of them beeing direct ones and those two were only two direct answers for Hulk from all of the decks in the pod.
Players unable to get rid of something in cEDH game is quite common because they have only so many answers and Protean Hulk is extremely hard to get rid of anyway once he is in play.

That first game was outrageous, Jordan just telegraphing the win from turn 1 and Bill, not copying the chain of vapor? No one keeping up interaction?

I don't know why, but I always love seeing a command tower in cEDH decks. There's just something funny about seeing a common, cheap card being played in a high budget deck
Its better than city of brass and mana confluence, and both of those see nearly universal play

what do you think of tergid in meren stax, what other slots would be needed to make that work?
I run tergrid (and kodama) in meren. It's as insane as you might imagine with all the plaguecrafter effects + mindslicer.
I'm getting Tergrid for my Meren deck.
15:33 Jordan could have played the land instead of the petal. He still would have gotten both, but would have saved himself 6 life.
That would have been his land per turn though, thus not being able to play a land he drew off of wheel. This way he effectively ramped 2 mana instead of just the one for the petal
And with nothing left it was a good game
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure in game 2 Jordan should not have been able to cast Kraum on turn 3 using the Mana Crypt since Nate still had a Collector Ouphe in play. Or did I miss something?
never mind, it was killed by the plaguecrafter. Nate's graveyard placement makes it appear like the Ouphe is still on the battlefield. I should have realized this when Adam used the treasure tokens anyway.
Does the damage from ruric count as commander damage?
I would love to see Nymris because I'm thinking about building it since no one seems to play it.
If power level isn't a concern, you can probably get away with pretty much anything. If you are looking to build a higher power Nymris, however, you'll probably end up going in the same direction as Sygg, River Cutthroat. I don't think the deck will be exactly the same though, you might want to play a few more proactive instant speed spells so that you can trigger the draw effect, even if there's nothing worth countering.
Not too familiar with cEDH but why was Lesser Masticore and Disciple of the Vault selected as the hulk line? Wouldn't Zulaport Cutthroat be more flexible and are there really no other cheap creatures with persist in Golgari?
Disciple lets you Hulk for Disciple (1), sac outlet (1), Melira (2) and Manticore (2). There are no 1-mana persist creatures that let you get the full combo if you go for Cutthroat over Disciple.
I played a game this week in a game of emperor with a friend and we were on the wing and he had me on the ropes with landfall synergy and I had one turn to kill him. I had moss wort bridge out and a Defense of the Heart under the bridge in exile. At my upkeep I cast it and went to get Kikki Jikki and Combat Celebrant and the dude stormed out of the shop. Sometimes it be like that 🤷🏻♂️
FYI, if you cast Defense in your upkeep it won't trigger until your next upkeep. You could cast it on the previous player's end step though, since Mosswort Bridge allows you to ignore timing restrictions for spells.

The decklist posted in the video description for the Ruric Thar deck is wrong. Like, kinda really wrong. Like, 3/7 cards of his opening hand of the Game 1 aren't on the list wrong.
That collector ouphe did nothing that entire game

Pretty sure Jordan shouldn't have been able to cast Kodama on Turn 5 even with Kinnan as it only adds to the mana production of a non land source, and only when that source is tapped, therefore he one had 2 mana from his enchanted land and 3 from mana crypt so he was 1 short
Those types of plays should easily be caught in game. Either that or Jordan is trying to pull a fast one on the table and leave one mana open. He had an extra land untapped so he could have cast it and since he didn't use that one mana, nothing was affected this time. Who knows how many times Jordan has done this move in other games and it worked in his favor.

I love the videos, however with headphones the deep inhales are harsh on the ears, it would be great if they got either removed or lowered in the edits, that's my only real negative and all the feedback I have otherwise this channel is incredible❤️

i dont get the end of game 2, the manticore returns if no -1/-1 counter and gets that -1/-1, but to cast it again from teh grave discard a card and pay 2 mana but i only see 3 mana available, what am i missing, cause if we follow that it should only be 4-5 damage ?? im so confused someone explain what im missing, i started over a month ago so i dont get much yet
It's not getting cast over and over again, persist automatically returns a creature for free but gives it a -1/-1 counter. If a creature with persist already has the -1/-1 counter, it wont come back as per the card text. But since Melira is on the field too, his creatures can't get -1/-1 counters, so he can use the persist ability as many times as he wants (i.e. he can keep getting it from the graveyard for free).

See when I play 4 player commanders, we like to do 80 health. Makes the games last longer to fully experience out all decks and really just have insane things happening.
does it bother anyone else when Joseph is in a game he refers to himself in the third person?... no?... just me?... okay
This way of playing is so boring. It's just about who gets out the combo first.
Kiki jiki....a card that is sooo net decked in terms of looking up combos, shame no one these days know how to home brew their own combos or deck style.
