  • Our guest for episode 181, and later in the week 182 is Charles Poliquin.
Right off the bat Mark calls Charles the most successful trainer of all time, and as far as I know, that’s correct. He’s trained Olympic athletes, influenced millions through his books and articles, and trained a LOT of trainers and other individuals. He also remains one of the most popular guests ever on Tim Ferriss’ podcast. Some of you may not be as aware of Charles as you are of a guy like last week’s guest, Stan Efferding. The recording session for this episode ran about the same length as last week’s with Stan, so I decided to break this one up into a Wednesday/Friday split.
This first episode is called the Myth of Discipline for an “aha” moment that came while listening to him. “When you love something, you never have a problem with discipline.” (Also, check out his article of the same name: www.strengthsensei.com/the-myt...)
We’ll see you back here on Friday for more with Charles Poliquin. In the meantime, check out his website: www.strengthsensei.com and follow him at @strengthsensei

I think equating the functions of dopamine and serotonin to yin and yang is a vast oversimplification. Likewise defining depression as a purely retrospective mental activity and anxiety as a purely prospective mental activity is a "black and white" model of the relationship between these two illnesses.
There's more to neurotransmitters than physiological arousal or sedation, and there's more to anxiety/depression than temporal focus and mental time travel.

As if he makes a cross-country skier play snooker to enhance his/her performance in the sport. No he doesn't. He makes them train for strength. Strength in muscle groups useful for their sport. I guess I should have shut off my CZcams because I didn't know who he was. But then I would have missed out. When I got into powerlifting as a college student, publications were hard to get and I had no time to read them anyway. After school I got into bodybuilding so names we heard were Weider, Parillo, Leidemeyer, Aceto, Everson etc. Those were the guys we paid attention to.
    .
    .
Poliquin doesn't seem to be a huge fan of how the majority of social media is applied. He's not impress with what lifters post because it's not at the level of his elite athletes. Well I guess there is a bit of snobbery in all of us. Sure some people are trolling for likes. Others post stuff because they just want to put it out there and just maybe someone else may try what they did and then develop some feedback. I get that he feels it's ludicrous to post pictures of things you should be doing anyway so why are people bringing attention to themselves by doing it? It just sucks up internet bandwidth like useless memes. He's a Baby Boomer not a Millennial. I'll say it's a generational thing because he is just a few months older than I am and I sometimes say the same thing (even though I'm guilty of the food pic thing). Although my food pics are because I created something new since I like to cook. Also his social style is not one that lends itself to the social media obsession. So to him it's comical. His intellectual level is significantly different. Those are things he doesn't find are worth highly prioritizing. But the Instagram tax thing is pretty funny.

‘Being scientific’ is over rated. You can find scientific papers to disprove and prove most everything. The proof is in the pudding and I’ll take Poliquin’s advice over any scientist.
