- Our guest for episode 181, and later in the week 182 is Charles Poliquin.
Right off the bat Mark calls Charles the most successful trainer of all time, and as far as I know, that’s correct. He’s trained Olympic athletes, influenced millions through his books and articles, and trained a LOT of trainers and other individuals. He also remains one of the most popular guests ever on Tim Ferriss’ podcast. Some of you may not be as aware of Charles as you are of a guy like last week’s guest, Stan Efferding. The recording session for this episode ran about the same length as last week’s with Stan, so I decided to break this one up into a Wednesday/Friday split.
This first episode is called the Myth of Discipline for an “aha” moment that came while listening to him. “When you love something, you never have a problem with discipline.” (Also, check out his article of the same name: www.strengthsensei.com/the-myt...)
We’ll see you back here on Friday for more with Charles Poliquin. In the meantime, check out his website: www.strengthsensei.com and follow him at @strengthsensei

RIP Mr. Poliquin. A true archive of knowledge.
Words 👍🏻💯❤️🔥
Wow! Mark has transformed his body over the last 5 years.
Fr, marks a beast
Rip Charles poliquin
Yes! now I'll have something to listen to today while I work my suck ass job!!! YES YES YES!
LMAO, I am doing the same thing!
You are right! A true wealth of knowledge! Can't wait for part 2!!!!!
I'm forever grateful that we have access to these resources via youtube they make a world of difference in my profession. This is real applicable knowledge that should be taken with a grain of salt
Thank you for this upload, such a good interview!
this info is awesome, nerding out on it . got sad when the video ended but saw there was part 2 :-
). thank you
one of the best episodes can't wait for the other half
I Love This..."its not really the vocabulary, its the inflection." This was an "aha" moment for me from Jim McD and Mr. Poliquin. Thank you. Great PowerCast!
Awesome episode, tons of great information.
Very happy I found this! Thank you.
outstanding podcast gentlemen. Devoted to this kind of humor and intellience.
Thanks guys! Great work
That magical word in the fitness industry "Functional training." I only train people functional training😂😂😂.This video is a gem find.Thank You gentlemen
This guy is freaking awesome!
How many champions this man trained means nothing to me. Charles invented the term "twat waffle" and for that humanity owes him a debt that can't be repaid! Best expression ever.
Best powercast I have listened to!!! He is amazing, I'd love to meet him one day
Charles Poliquin! Félicitation d'un ancien collègue de De La Salle! Way to go!!
Great Video as ALWAYS! Diggin the new Jim intros too!
Off the hook! Mr.Poliquin is awesome. (Hey Jim, ask him if he was in theater as an athlete in HS.......) Great Pod Cast tx.
love the video intro, McD!!!!
This is an awesome interview or Powercast.
Rip Charles thanks for all the knowledge
Poliquin is a genius. Just learned about him a couple years back, very intelligent man.
Not really
Smartest coach in history I had to read his poliquin principles book three times to get all thr info it's ridiculous
Ridiculous is the correct term for bro science.
Thanks for sharing this podcast, amazing content and knowledge from mr Poliquin
he was enjoyable to listen to. good cast
This is gold.
Rest in peace to a legend. Thank you Charles.
Excellent.
thats pure gold!
Charles is the man!
I could listen to him for hours. He's so far ahead.
RIP Coach Poliquin ou will 4ever be remembered
1rd Woot Woot, looks like a good one, while i tell my boss to shut up, cause i'm watching Powercast !!! Did i hear correct part 2 Friday ??? Do i really have to be off the team if i didn't know who Charles was ???
the height of originality is skill in concealing origins.
One of my favorite podcasts so far, definitely going to try and use some of this information to better my powerlifting and school. I'm definitely a dopamine guy, I need a lot of work to balance myself
one of my favorite powercasts by far.
Great point starting at 44:23
that is an awesome man!!!!
57:24 Defines Myth of Discipline
So the reason I can see my Oblique muscle and I am struggling to get rid of the last bit of pillow fat in the middle of my abbs is STRESS.... Meditation it is. Thanks so much for the advise.
A very interesting fellow.
Really seems like you guys have been remembering to send each other the scripts these days!
Is this really recorded live? I'm skeptical of that.
Does no one credit Arthur Jones, from the 60's and 70's?
Craig Castanet, D.C. The late Mike Mentzer always did.
Guys a genius
kind of a subtle point at 14:00
if she THINKS it's going to hurt her, it's going to hurt her
What's the chin up routine he read on Tnation?
I think equating the functions of dopamine and serotonin to yin and yang is a vast oversimplification. Likewise defining depression as a purely retrospective mental activity and anxiety as a purely prospective mental activity is a "black and white" model of the relationship between these two illnesses.
There's more to neurotransmitters than physiological arousal or sedation, and there's more to anxiety/depression than temporal focus and mental time travel.
But science mainly progresses on the strength of laws and principles.
19 months later he died. Brutal.
🤣😂 He had a family history of congenital heart disease, which means he had a family history of eatting red meat. 🤣😂
@@fitawrarifitness6842 how does red meat cause this birth defect? Source?
Mark and the supertraining squad need to Order 66 Mac Trucc
lets kill fucking mac trucc
Does anybody know how he trained endurance athletes (in the podcast he mentions a biathlete)?
genuine enquiry and not meaning it in a disrespectful way at all:
If the hormone - zonal fat loss and neurotransmitter - lifter type principles are true, how come they are not more mainstream and why are they not more supported by others in the industry?
Its not, its bro science
RIP Charles. You will be missed.
@Dominik Reitmaier how did he die?
Was using cluster training back in 73, only then we called it rest pause.
2:35
Legend
I could hardly here this at the gym, please up the volume next time guys. Great info nonetheless!
*hear
Volume seems OK... 3 years later you could check into this with a different device
He is just pushing mike away... haha
the fact that the part 2 of this video has less than half the views of the first part should tell you all you need to know.
Charles was not the first person to apply Tempo. It was utilized first by Ian King and Charles has even credited Ian in older text.
optimumperformance relisten to his words
RIP Charles
god bless the G.O.A.T. rip charles
The ones that disliked this obviously didn't listen to the entire thing.
Look at the size and shape of Mr Poliquin's bi's and tri's wthhhh??? Impressed!!!!
Sensei
You should get PAUL CHEK ON HERE INSTEAD OF POLIQUIN!!!
6:58 Poliquin taking credit for originating slow negatives in weight lifting for strength, stating that he came up with the concept in 1982 and that it was only accepted by mainstream science in 2016. PLEASE, Arthur Jones came up with this in the '70s and Mentzer pushed the concept thereafter. The man knows alot but over the years I've heard him bullshit too many times. He claimed in an interview that Boyer Coe never responded to HIT training and went to volume training. I have an email from Boyer stating this to be completely false.
Blah blah blah.
As he states all the evidence from the 20s and 30s in different languages , and says they've been around for decades !!?!??? 🤔
@Mathieu Prudhomme He worked with hundreds of bodybuilders during his career and was very opinionated as to how they should train. He was a bodybuilder himself who also did powerlifting.
Now the man who claimed you shouldn't eat carbs despite proof that people who eat moderate carbohydrate diets live longer (Mediterranean diet), is dead at 57.
@@xanthromera It is well known that Charles' family had a history of congenital heart disease, and he himself had a heart attack in his 20's.
@@massimo7219 no he had a family history if red meat eaters. Its just like a family history of alcoholism will manifest as, a family history of liver disease.
What a loss to humanity is the demise of this fine man... 😔
Whatever his stature is, Poliquin has told a few stretchers in his time regarding fitness and training.
Damn mark looks great now in comparison
Rip❤
Holy shit i love charles. Great video, cant wait to see yall fat people on friday. Unless mike posts something tomorrow. Especially liked the part when he talked about managing stress and why you should just do shit and the results will come regardless of what other people think
Fucking awesome!
I wonder if he would've changed anything if he knew he was close to death
Can you do an Interview with Dr Eric Berg I think it would be a great interview filled with tons of information!!!
Suomi mainittu 51:45 TORILLA TAVATAAN!
A straight hour spent casting pearls before swine
Dr Eric Berg. Please forgive us.
Poliquin is so full of it!!!!!
True
@@fitawrarifitness6842 why do u hate him so much?

Poliquin: "sport specificity is bullshit"
Also Poliquin: 53:10
lol you didn't listen to the whole thing, he specifically says that for powerlifting it's normal to focus on the lifts, cause thats the point of the sport
@@Azola69 You just gave a description of "sport specificity" 🤣😂
Charles talks a lil mumbly so it can be hard to understand at times what he is saying. Very interesting episode nonetheless!!
He's from Quebec :P
He speaks English very well otherwise, it's just the mumbling that's a little annoying haha
french ontario*?
@William , we call it ontario french , as far as the language , although french ontario might be correct ,ive never heard it called that ( Im from sudbury) , just think its intersesting you wrote that lol, not sayin im right :)
haha idk im from quebec, my english might be off lol, thanks
he fish oils are great paul chek put stuff out there to
Oh dear, it's the guy with the inflated arms! How did they get so big Mike?
You expect him to have small arms after decades of working hard ?
You're right, he has worked damn hard. Just looks a bit odd on his relatively small (and old) frame. Much respect to the guy and his reputation though.
@@woutervl Looks like site injection oils.
"sport specific is bullshit",knew it
Yes, first claiming it is bullshit and then explaining how he applies specificity to his trainees. But it's not specific. As if he makes a cross-country skier play snooker to enhance his/her performance in the sport. No he doesn't. He makes them train for strength. Strength in muscle groups useful for their sport. He's not going to have them do a humongous amount of bicep curls. Why? Because that wouldn't be specific enough.
53:10 🤣😂
if this guy is so great why doesn't mark hire him.
Because nobody can hire the best S&C coach in the world lol
because hes not the best in the world he chats a lot of bro science. look at the way he backs up his statements "arnold didnt read pubmed" using the arnold is god arguement. also pubmed didnt exist until 1996 lol so as if he could use it. he often discredits people that disagree with him saying they dont have a basic understanding of physiology as his criticism. by putting them down he gets away with hiding that he cannot come up with a valid rebuttal.
Idk why and I really try to listen and give him a chance but fuck he annoys the shit out of me... He's way into that " me me me " bullshit.... Just my opinion.
Phlegm Atic You are confused because you have inferior genetics.
Mark bell trains gym bros.
Charles Poliquin trains Olympic gold medalist.
You are a douche bag.
Strength Sensei Beats Up Mark Bell.

GOAT Strength coach?
Mel siff !?!?!
Can you keep it oh please without the language thanks
Not sure if its in all the podcasts, but watching this one Mark seems disinterested almost every time I think about it.
I guess I should have shut off my CZcams because I didn't know who he was. But then I would have missed out. When I got into powerlifting as a college student, publications were hard to get and I had no time to read them anyway. After school I got into bodybuilding so names we heard were Weider, Parillo, Leidemeyer, Aceto, Everson etc. Those were the guys we paid attention to.
.
.
Poliquin doesn't seem to be a huge fan of how the majority of social media is applied. He's not impress with what lifters post because it's not at the level of his elite athletes. Well I guess there is a bit of snobbery in all of us. Sure some people are trolling for likes. Others post stuff because they just want to put it out there and just maybe someone else may try what they did and then develop some feedback. I get that he feels it's ludicrous to post pictures of things you should be doing anyway so why are people bringing attention to themselves by doing it? It just sucks up internet bandwidth like useless memes. He's a Baby Boomer not a Millennial. I'll say it's a generational thing because he is just a few months older than I am and I sometimes say the same thing (even though I'm guilty of the food pic thing). Although my food pics are because I created something new since I like to cook. Also his social style is not one that lends itself to the social media obsession. So to him it's comical. His intellectual level is significantly different. Those are things he doesn't find are worth highly prioritizing. But the Instagram tax thing is pretty funny.
Why are these grown men drinking starbucks lattes?
Charles had some fantastic training knowledge but it's clear now that most of his nutrition and supplement knowledge was flat out wrong.
charles poliquin....he’s smarter than you are!!!! rip.
If by smart you mean dead.
Can someone tell Jim mcd to stop breathing in the fucking mic.... thx
Julesthetic Motivation That's smelly not Jim.
poliquin is a bro scientist
The Best kind of scientist!!
stoners stone he has coached 30 olympias.how many you have trained again?
Irrelevant.
30g of fish oil per day?
60g of BCAA during your workouts?
Putting athletes on low carb diets?
bullshit.
presjo again whatever he does works. 30 Olympic winners. And yes in a sense he is a bro scientist. Because science usually validates training methods rather than inventing them. So many of his methods took 20-30 year to validate.
assessment lvl 99
Most consecutive Pull ups..... 600 + by a 70 year old Korean guy.... FM!
where is the video
bring paul chek in ! ;)
‘Being scientific’ is over rated. You can find scientific papers to disprove and prove most everything. The proof is in the pudding and I’ll take Poliquin’s advice over any scientist.
