The Lakers Fired Darvin Ham... But Will Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka Hold Themselves Accountable?

  • Defenders of Darvin Ham-and while Lakers Nation isn't exactly full of them, there are some whether among fans or in the (generally national) media-have pointed out since the Lakers canned Ham (ha!) Friday afternoon that it's not fair to blame him for everything that went wrong this year.
Darvin wasn't "the" problem. The "real" problem was something else.
The problem there, of course, is that the framing is too reductive. In any season like this one, responsibility for success and failure is spread around. So yeah, Darvin wasn't "the" problem, but he was "a" problem, and the easiest one to fix at the moment. The time will come for players to be held accountable, as the franchise chooses who they'll try to keep, who they let walk, and who they might use to try and upgrade the roster. But the final question is who holds the decision-makers accountable? Is Rob Pelinka going through a process of introspection similar to the one that led to his evaluation of Ham, and the need for his dismissal? How does that process work in the basketball ops department?
And what about Jeanie Buss? Is she holding Pelinka responsible? Who does she talk with to get a feel for whether Pelinka is doing the job as well as he should?
What happens if the answers to the questions that aren't about Ham's accountability aren't very good? Or aren't really being addressed at all? What does that mean for the capacity for success for the next guy?
    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Darvin got fired because he wasn't successful enough in his responsibilities this season...that doesn't mean he was the only issue.
SEGMENT 2: Multiple things can be true at once.
SEGMENT 3: Is Pelinka holding himself accountable? Is Jeanine holding Pelinka accountable?

Guys! Minnesota outrebounded Denver 42 to 34 in Denver this past Saturday! The Lakers in lost 11 in a row to Denver over the last 2 years which included playoff games. In those 11 games, the Nuggets in 9 of those 11 games, out rebounded the Lakers by 10 or more rebounds and specifically killed the Lakers with offensive rebounds. The Lakers also over the last two years against Minnesota, Cleveland and New York would get outrebounded and destroyed with giving up offensive rebounds. The 2020 championship Lakers team didn't get crushed rebounding. They would be even or slightly better against teams like this and they wouldn't get killed with offensive rebounding! Do we need a slide ruler to figure out the problem!

I am so glad you guys addressed this subject. Somebody needed to. With so much blame being placed on Lebron/ Ham / AD / DLo.... People were ignoring the real elephant in the room. The front office doesn't know how to put a championship contender together, from the coaching staff to the players. Jeanie is too busy having "friends & family" in the front office. Rob Pelinka is a sports agent, not a general manager. Jeanie Buss needs to turn over all management duties to a capable staff, starting with firing Rob Pelinka (which won't happen because he's her friend) and hiring Bob Myers.

Ty Lue = Fired after losing to the defending champs twice in the playoffs (Sound familiar?)
Mike Malone = Fired in Sacramento just 26 games into his second season, then given multiple chances by the nuggets, including losing in the first round and western conference semi finals on a team that contained the league MVP.
Nick Nurse = Fired by the Raptors after a single fluke of a championship in 2019 and failing to make the playoffs or lose in the first round 5 years in a row, then losing in the first round of the playoffs this year.
Jason Kidd = Fired just 45 games into his 4th season with the bucks and wasnt given a head coaching opportunity for two years.
Chris Finch = Now in his 4th year as the Wolves head coach after missing the playoffs his first year, then losing in the 1st round the next two years.
Erik Spoelstra = Nearly fired after a disappointing 2011 season, but Pat Riley actually stood up to Lebron James. Something that Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss Refuse to do.
So now that i've listed some of the best coaches in the league and their history that everyone conveniently forgot about, tell me, which head coach are we gonna bring in that will win the lakers a title NEXT season? Also, I remember the days of Mark Landsberger, Kurt Rambis, a short stint of Mitch Kupchak, then Paul Gasol and others. It is obvious that this organization has no real chance of getting to the mountaintop anytime soon with who is in charge. From Jeanie Buss down to the FO (Pelinka), the only way this team improves is a change at the top. Jeanie can't or won't fire herself. Next step is to get a SMART and COMPENTANT GM and that would be Bob Myers and let him make all of the important organizational decisions. Seeing that this is above her comprehension (at least it seems so), expect the Lakers to just spin their wheels.

Ham is not a great coach, but he is not the reason why the Lakers had such a poor record. AD was available most of the season, but even when he is available, he puts up monster numbers against losing teams and then turns around and does a no show two days later. What is the point of being available if you're only going to show up half of the time? LeBlame always load manages against the bigger and better teams with the excuse of having the "Lebron James of Feet Issues," but then he will show up 3 days later and put up monster numbers, sometimes on back to backs, against losing teams like Washington, Charlotte, and Raptors. If you're truly the goat, why not load manage against the bad team. The Lakers, without LBJ can beat those lesser teams without him. It's against the better team where you really need LBJ to have a chance. Why does LeBlame always load manage against the Celtics, the Bucks, Philly, and Wolves and so on and so on? This guy always talks about how he never cheats the game, and yet, he is always trying to artificially make himself look better than he actually is. I really don't understand the attraction people have for this loser?

And this is what upset the Gay owners of The Warriors. Don't think for one second that didn't make them owners biased and at 1st tried to control him. And when that didn't work they fired and slandered him. So let's not hold that against his ability as a coach. That's all I'm saying.

Pelinka should also be fired. Hes responsible for the disbandment of a team which had just won a title and until now, he has not brought players to compete effectively against contending teams. For as long as he remains the GM, the Lakers will never get good role players to complement Lebron and AD. It would seem that the players he is getting for the team are those players who will never really help the team win at all.

From not retaining good players to messing up signing draft picks- to trades and poor coaching hires - he has shown no signs of being competent. Maybe Magic was right leaving because of him? I don't trust this front office to get the next hire right. Maybe after 3 seasons he will actually sign a big? Honestly, so frustrating how bad he is. No vision...

I would think AD has just as much influence as Bron and Bron is the old head who is probably thinking, “I’m too old for this ish…” Meanwhile, the ENTIRE team was frustrated with this coaching choice. I blame Darvin, but I also blame the Lakers for redundancies on the roster and no center that can defend. Not Darvin’s fault.. not Ad/Lebrons fault.

It all starts at the top. it is the person who has the absolute final say. you cannot do run the Lakers by committee because everyone has cover. the buck stops nowhere. we aren't certain if it's rob or jeanie or both. that being said, jeanie is the ultimate boss and has the ultimate say. she needs to have a vp of basketball operations or give the gm ultimate decisions on the basketball side of the Lakers. rob is conniving. he and the rambis' conspired to get rid of Magic. but Jeanie allowed this circus to happen. firing Vogal through the media happened because no one stepped up and because they all pointed at each other to do the job. but, again, that is ultimately Jeanie's fault. and any gm or vp in their right mind would not have broken up a championship team for a third wheel like westbrook. again jeanie's final call and there in lies the problem. Jeanie is an obvious Lakerlifer and will never be on the hotseat. that is why she needs to relinquish final call on basketball operations. she can keep final say if a trade or decision is obviously egregious. but the structure of a roster for any given year must have ONE basketball mind overseeing it all and that person must be able to be fired. Running the basketball operations of the Lakers by committee is obtuse and inane, especially a committee that has more than one Rambis. (sorry, i couldn't help myself).
