Report: Redick Still Frontrunner for Lakers Coach, and Rich Paul Says Focus on Davis, not LeBron.

  • The Lakers head coaching search is going slowly, in part because the apparent frontrunner still has a gig calling games for ESPN. Reports from Shams Charania (and others) continue to put JJ Redick at the front of the line for the Lakers, even while more interviews are set to happen this week, followed by another round of more intensive interviews as June rolls around. Marc Stein reports there is even chatter around the league about who the Lakers might target to be on Redick's staff. (Hint: It includes guys who are theoretically in the running for the head gig, which feels at least potentially a little ambitious.)
Nothing, at the least, has been said/done to dispel the idea that it's Redick's job to lose. Maybe that changes as the interview pool widens. Keep an eye on what leaks -- in multiple directions -- after guys like David Adelman, Micah Nori and Chris Quinn sit down for a rap sesh with Rob Pelinka.
Meanwhile, Rich Paul is on the record saying the Lakers really should be focusing on Anthony Davis in this process, not LeBron James. Which is true - AD is going to be a Laker, almost surely, longer than James. It's also another tea leaf that points to Redick's candidacy, because Team James is going the extra mile to separate themselves from the perception that Redick would be LeBron's hire... which of course is required because people see that, you know, the guy is LeBron's podcast partner.
Finally, a report over the weekend said the Phoenix Suns plan to make a full court press on James if/when he opts out of his Lakers deal. Which he surely will. The notion of him going to Phoenix for a veteran's minimum or taxpayer midlevel (can the Suns even offer that?) or whatever is far fetched. But is it 100% guaranteed he comes back to the Lakers if he ops out?
    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: JJ Redick is still the clubhouse leader.
SEGMENT 2: Rich Paul reiterates that LeBron isn't pulling the strings.
SEGMENT 3: We're sure LeBron returns if he opts out, right?

After Walton and Ham, why do the Lakers have confidence that they can pick someone off the street with no experience to do the job? JJ is a hire that's almost guaranteed to fail within 3 years.

JJ Redick is not the coach for AD orLebron. He is the coach for the rest of the team. Lebron and AD are championship veterans, who don't need coaching. He needs to get the most out Ad, and Lebron supporting cast. This year, especially because Lebron and AD are playing in the olympics.

I think reasons behind the Lakers FO being enamored with JJ Redick may have to do with the fact that he's yet to learn bad habits from incumbent coaches when it comes to substitution patterns (namely, robo-substitutions) and possibly not having a propensity to only put trust in older players (even though they may not be up to the task). JJ Redick has also spoken glowingly of young players like Brandon Ingram on multiple occasions (JJ Podcast 12/27/2020) and seems to have a good understanding of how to utilize his talent (see JJ Redick podcast 9/5/2023). BTW, Mike Krzyzewski's purported involvement may also point towards the Lakers FO possibly seeking a reunion with Brandon Ingram (another Duke product).

Lebron and Rich Paul has a stranglehold on the Lakers organization like their mobsters..
This is going to fail in the end and the Lakers are going to suffer this for years to come Doctor Buss is rolling over in his grave.
The Laker legendary mastic is gone with Lebron and company nothing can save this franchise Mrs Buss would be wise to sell the franchise.

That organization is messed up and has been for awhile

@One_Black_Panther the 2017/18 season with a young caruso, hart, Kuz,, ball, kcp, bi and Randle was the start of something. They blew it up to get Bron and then even more to get Ad. Had they stuck with it instead of going after bron and we might have a better team now.

    • @ps50433
      @ps50433 Před 20 dny +1

@@mikearrington1466 That team wasn't going anywhere. Young and promising does not equal championship caliber. None of the guys you named have gone on to become superstar players. The mistake was not moving them out for AD and LeBron, that was the right move. It was blowing up a team that you won the title with for Russell Westbrook. That team was long and athletic, defended like hell. And they blew it up because the Lakers are enamored with shiny things.

Lebron can get more money from the Lakers if he resigns. No way he signs with a team that he will not be credited if they win. It looks like Cassell and Borrego are for lead assistant options. The Lakers must interview Mark Jackson

      @@cheetahturner4576
You can debate the nuance but you already see the point. I don't think anyone would argue that Kerr knows more or less than Reddick. They are both great.
His coaches good, bad, and mediocre were:
      - Mike Krzyzewski
      - Brian Hill
      - Stan Van Gundy
      - Jim Boylan (lol)
      - Doc Rivers
      - Brett Brown
      - Alvin Gentry
      - Rick Carlisle
I think he's a smart guy, good communicator, great insight, would need great assistant coaches.
I don't see LA working with any coach, not Kerr, Pop, Jackson, anyone, with this team as-is but I think JJ Redick would do as well as any coach on any team.
Steve Nash was a great player wtih great coaches and in end...for whatever reason, just didn't work. Game is like that.

When JJ is LeCoach he's gonna need a stretch big to play alongside AD. I could see him drawing up some nice sets for Lauri Markenan... 💯💯💯
C Wood will actually get used too, and lets hope Vando works on that corner 3 cuz we need his point of attack defense!
I cant see D Lo being on this squad next year... one way or another, and sadly Rui/AR prolly needed in any real trades. Along with all 3 firsts... we should demand Sexton back also in this deal.

AK said the Wolves were nutty.. and BK said, “Well they made the conference finals…” lol! Didn’t we last year? I know we hold ourselves to a higher standard, but I’m with AK.. if you’re nutty you’re nutty.
    2. Why are we to assume a good assistant just doesn’t in any world want to be a good assistant in LA? Hell… the way everyone is talking about JJ, they’ll have a shot at head coach soon anyways.
Additional comment: Boston is a “great place” sure. But it’s better to some than others… take that how you will. Everyone loves LA.

Best option for assistant coaches are Rajon Rondo, Phil Handy & a big man that can coach or help AD to improve his game specially on his skills & can always remind AD on what to do to help the team to win games..
