Did Darvin Ham Make Budenholzer a Tough Sell For Lakers Fans? Would Mark Jackson Make Sense?

  • How unpopular is Darvin Ham among Lakers fans?
    Well, for starters, at least according to a poll on the show's CZcams page, fans would rather see Phil Jackson return-nearly 79 year old projector of intense "these teenagers need to get off my lawn" energy and once insulter of LeBron James Phil Jackson-than give the keys to Mike Budenholzer, who isn't any of those things and has won an NBA title and 50 games in a season multiple times.
    Why?
    Ham comes from the Budenholzer tree. It would mean firing the student to hire the teacher. And by about 2-1, Lakers fans favor Jackson in this scenario.
    Of course, in theory none of this matters. Who cares what fans think, right? Well, the Lakers for starters. And not without cause. After this much churn on the bench, perception is important. Honeymoon periods are going to be very short, and the energy fans project around the new coach will shape coverage and narratives. It's obviously not the only thing, or even the most important thing, for the Lakers to consider, but optics are surely some kind of a factor in their minds.
    So if Bud is out, what about Mark Jackson, a still-popular option among many Lakers fans? Not a great idea. We explain why.
    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
    SEGMENT 1: Phil beats Bud!
    SEGMENT 2: Why fan sentiment around the new coach is at least a consideration in El Segundo.
    SEGMENT 3: Why Mark Jackson is a bad idea.

    Mark was let go purely for religious reasons and not for basketball reasons, he started the Warriors off in the right direction. If we can look past Udoka’s history (very RECENT history I might add) than why is it we don’t look past Mark’s? Didn’t we just have a coach who literally insulted his players on his way out? I don’t believe I ever heard a single negative thing out of Mark’s mouth for his team either. Dude has a history of taking accountability unlike what we just dealt with. He might not be the BEST coach available but he’s certainly not deserving of the mocking he’s receiving here. Poor taste guys

      I would say do your own reading into why Mark Jackson got fired from GS and hasn't been hired for any spot in the past several years despite interviewing. Because I used to wonder too why he is not being hired then weeks ago did my own research and thought "Okay nah, he doesn't fit if thats the case."
      I think he could potentially coach a younger division though and work his way back up.

Bud is the number one candidate for credit winning at Milwaukee forgets that Jason Kidd put the ball in Giannis hands and had him play in thw way that made him an MVP. MJ was the coach that put the GSW core together and called them " the greatest shooting backcourt in history". Bud is a horrible choice and your not giving MJ credit for creating the GSW core team. And let's rememeber the person MJ Hass to connect with on the Lakers is a 40 year old father of near adult children!

    I did my own brief research weeks ago about why Mark Jackson isn't being hired for any coaching jobs. And to make a long story short, he is not suitable for an NBA head coaching spot. Now Kenyon Martin offered a suggestion to Mark directly on if he would coach college and he said he is open to that too. I think he should start there and then hopefully work his way back. Because all the stuff that I read, some were true and some were alleged, you can't just drop back into a head coaching NBA like that after so long. And the reason why he hasn't been hired again is likely because those that interviewed suspected that he hasn't changed.

    Wow. I respect you guys, but the way you guys crapped on Mark Jackson was a little shady. Sadly, Mark has been blackballed due to his faith. Him, being "old school "is a miserable excuse, because you have Thibs in New York, Pop in San Antonio.
    Folks are whiny over a man that prays before a game? And yes, the new NBA agenda probably makes it hard for a guy like Mark Jackson...it's sad.

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers  Před 24 dny +5

      The religious element we referred to was about more than just Jackson praying before a game, which wouldn't be unusual at all. The NBA, for people unaware, offers pregame chapel services for players. The issue isn't that Jackson's a very religious man. Plenty of others in the league are as well. But there were reports/books from writers I trust about Jackson inserting his background as an ordained minister directly into the team culture while with the Warriors, whether trying to get players to attend his services or trying to cultivate an overtly religious environment in the locker room. To me, that's crossing a line. If people disagree, fine. But like I also said during the show, that's not really a big factor in why I don't think Jackson would be a good hire, because it's the easiest stuff to simply not do again. The reasons I focused on are related to basketball and people skills. Again, disagree with them if you want. That's cool. For real. But I want to make sure it's all in perspective. Appreciate you watching. AK

    • @Rustyblackleford
      @Rustyblackleford Před 24 dny

      @@LockedOnLakers I can see your perspective on this, but I still won't budge on some of things that was said as far as why he shouldn't or wouldn't be a good candidate and it's funny that he can't be given grace to "change", but he's "been away too long or he's arrogant or whatever. " You guys basically fires the dude before he got seen...lol. But I digress...there have been worse coaches that have done things that have been conveniently swept under the rug, but Jackson is the worst candidate? Right....

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers  Před 24 dny +3

      @@Rustyblackleford Well, the "fired" thing was a genuine slip of the tongue (we'd been talking about so many fired Lakers coaches), and we just ran with it because it was funny.
      I don't disagree that Jackson could be afforded another opportunity to show he's changed, but the fact remains that I'm wary of coaches who've been out of the game this long. (The same reason cited for why we'd both pass on, say, Jeff Van Gundy, who to the best of my knowledge has no "baggage," perceived or otherwise.) Could that create a catch-22 of sorts for Jackson? Perhaps, and maybe it's not entirely fair to him. But it doesn't change how I'd be uncomfortable with someone out of coaching that long, regardless of who they are.
      You're also correct that other coaches with issues in their past - arguably worse stuff - have gotten hired despite those issues. But as I mentioned, the non-basketball issues linked to Jackson aren't a big factor in why I wouldn't hire him. They're genuinely not. (If they were, we'd just say it.) The pressing reasons are the ones we focused on, that are more directly linked to the job. Agree or disagree with them, that's totally cool. We didn't expect a consensus but wanted to address Jackson, because he's been brought up so often.
      I appreciate the conversation here.

He isn't a YES MAN, he would challenge Lebron... James NEEDS the FRICTION (Ty Lue used this to get even more out of LBJ). Steph Curry also gave Mark Jackson great reviews when asked about him... the lights are bright in LA, some assistant coach/1st timer will crumble.

      Griffin's a very interesting question, because like Darvin, he's another guy who played in the league, built a rep as a very smart guy, paid his dues working as an assistant, and was widely viewed as a hot commodity to eventually get a shot. But once Griffin got it, he clearly lost that Bucks locker room in a HURRY. Like, shockingly fast. That said, even if it felt to some like the Bucks were winning despite Griffin rather than because of him, the team still did better under him than Doc. So Milwaukee's problems were/are about more than just Griffin. And it'll definitely require some good selling to get fans excited about a coach with connections to Ham/Bud who got let go so quickly. Overall, Griffin would be a challenging hire. Doesn't mean he couldn't end up a good hire anyway, but I would be extremely surprised if the Lakers went in that direction. Appreciate you watching. AK

He built the Warriors but his playoff wins with them are 9 in two years (matching Darvin’s!) and he is similar to Darvin and Doc Rivers as being more ra ra than X’s and O’s. He couldn’t win a championship with them, then a less experienced coach takes them over and wins multiple rings, you have to ponder the efficiency. If we go with someone inexperienced as a head coach, someone needs to be brought in to ask scenario type questions vs the usual character questions. Look at the warriors record with mark Jackson and right after him when Steve Kerr arrived

      Look at the Warriors before Jackson arrived and look at the transformation they made under him. By the time Kerr arrived Jackson had completely changed the culture and started their winning ways. I saw it firsthand.
