I was under the impression that he hated witches anyway, since he came from a world where witches were persecuted. The town he and his brother founded, and where the portal leads out, is in Connecticut, which isn’t far from Massachusetts, where the Salem Witch Trials happened. I think this was deliberate on Dana’s part.

The Salem Witch Trials happened between 1692-1693 though and it’s stated in Yesterday’s Lie that Philip Wittebane and his brother founded Gravesfield (the town Luz is from) in 1635, when a witch lured them into the Demon Realm. Granted, hysteria around witch has always been around but if you ask me, I think his isolation of being the only human on the boiling isles on top of the witch that lured him into the demon realm is the real reason why he hates witches. I think the witch that lured him might’ve needed him and his brother and tricked them into doing something that got his brother killed.

@@_marshP My theory is that this witch needed Philip and his brother for something, like how Eda needed Luz to help steal King’s crown in the pilot. And whatever task this witch had in mind might’ve gotten his brother killed. I read somewhere the reason why his brother’s clone is named “Hunter” was because his brother was an actual hunter. The collector, as we saw in the owl beast’s origin story, was someone who was poaching wild beasts (collecting them, as hinted as in their name). Maybe they had to seek a dangerous creature, one the collector couldn’t get on their own.

@@amethystsavage4018 Interesting theory but why was Flapjack sitting on the shoulder of Phillips brother when their picture was shown as the curator told Carmilla about them? And why does Edas father have a mathcing Palisman? I think the witch that "tricked" the brothers into coming to the demon realm was Edas ancestor or at least a member of the Clawthorn clan and carved both Flapjack and Dells Palisman. Maybe those two palisman were meant as a pair that was supposed to be passed down through the generations from parent to child. Maybe even as a kind of passed down engagement/wedding rings where one would go to the child of the Clawthorn clan and the other would go to whoever married that child. Which in turn could be a reason for Phillips brother to leave the human realm or to be taken against his will.

My theory about why Phillip has those glyphs on his arm, is probably because he wanted to see if magic worked without having to rely on a piece of paper and a pen, or other such things, to draw the glyphs.
His his theory was probably that it would work like having a spell tattooed on you in DnD, so you can cast that spell without having to prepare anything.
I consider it evidence that Phillip put those glyphs on himself out of curiosity, is that the pattern on his arm looks a lot like the ones that he draws to “teleport”

      @CoconutEnjoyer Před 2 lety +65

@@greenhat8978 it could also be that due to him missing a magic bile the glyphs corrode his arm in an attempt to activate, kinda how the paper disintegrated when Luz attempted to use a glyph in the human realm, since there wasn't any magic to create a spell it self destructed, now he needs the palismen to suck their magic and be able to stop the corrosion of his arm. This would tie back to why Belos was experimenting on Basilisk in an attempt to figure a substitute for palismen since they were already becoming scarce.

What we have here, in this episode, is called a "Bootstrap Paradox" (Used a few times in Doctor Who). Basically Philip's actions in the past which led to the present (becoming Belos, the portal door being destroyed, manipulating literally everybody and the day of unity etc.) resulted in Luz and Lilith to go back in time to find Philip and get help/answers. However; Luz and Lilith's actions in the past (helping him retrieve that collector artifact and Lilith punching Philip, which seemed to further fuel his hatred towards witches (at least that what it looked like to me)) which results in what's happening currently.
The actions of all three were meant to happen, there was no avoiding it or changing it. And that's why it's a paradox. There is no beginning, no end, and we can never truly know which action started the other first, it's a endless loop.

This episode confirmed that Philip Wittebane and Emperor Belos are the same person. Philip Wittebane was not really as noble as he was portrayed in his diary, making it seem like he was regretful for the people who died for him when he, in fact, sacrificed and manipulated them. I'm really interested in learning more about Bella's in the future and how he became emperor. Here's what I think of so far.
Emperor Belos justifies taking power and limiting magic because of the damage wild magic has done, but 400 years ago, it seems that the people of the boiling islands seem fine and even happier without the coven system in place. At first glance, it appears that Bealls was just using propaganda to justify the covered system, but I think it's more complicated than that. Remember, Emperor Belos has only been in power for 50 years. Who's to say that during the centuries, things got worse with people abusing magic and Belos seeing an opportunity, created the coven system to stop the abuse of Magic while becoming the ruler of the boiling islands. Or maybe he caused an event that got people to fear wild Magic and took the opportunity to install himself in power.
Another thing I noticed was that Philip Wittebane Hates witches and the demons of the boiling islands. That can be understandable because of the time period he was from. Most people from that time thought witches and demons were monsters. Well, the people of the boiling islands were friendly at first glance, but who's to say that he can have a bad experience living there? Of course, it's possible that he wasn't a nice person in the first place, which could've made things worse for him. Finally, Philip Wittebane/Emperor Belos is a liar; in the previous episodes, Philip Wittebane made it seem that he was regretful for all the people that were killed in his quest to get the titans' blood and return home. It's revealed he was outright lying about being remorseful, and he manipulated and used all those people as sacrifices without a shred of remorse. As Belos, he makes these promises that he refuses to keep.
I was thinking about his end goal; what is he after why is he doing all of this? my idea, and this is just an educated guess, is that he's looking to destroy all magic, he has a deep hatred of the people of the boiling islands and magic in general, and he plans to destroy it all bu fusing it with earth. As I said, I could be wrong, and as I said before, he can't be trusted, but I think he was telling the truth when he made it that he has no plans for invading earth; he has something bigger plan.
Tell me, what did you think about what I said?

The reveal that he is human was foreshadowed all the way back during seperate tides when the golden guard called belos a man, not a witch, or anything. How he got pointy ears might be a few things, maybe self mutilation, or maybe a byproduct of absorbing palismans.

Crazy parallel between Luz and Phillip:
If we assume that Phillip (and his brother) were outcasts like Luz, but, unlike Luz, Phillip didn't find the community and acceptance Luz found, remaining an outcast, causing him to grow bitter towards Witches and the Demon Realm in general
It goes further: maybe Phillip's brother did manage to make friends and find a family, like Luz, which could've driven a wedge between him and Phillip, who, after feeling like more of an outcast than at home, only wanted to return home
His desperation to return home might have driven him to use glyphs or other kinds of wild magic on himself. While his brother mastered wild magic, that same magic was ruining Phillip's body and mind.
All of the tension might have blown up into a brawl between the 2 brothers, both using increasingly powerful wild magic against each other, until Phillip finally cursed out (probably for the first time) and killed his brother, fueling him with guilt for his brother and hatred for the Witches and Wild magic that drove them apart
Again, unlike Luz, who has been kinda bringing people together (Eda and her family, Willow, Gus, Amity) and mending the cracks in society (Getting Viney, Jerbo and Barkus out of the Detention track into multiple tracks) while using and perfecting wild magic
    Ok, I'm done
The theory above stands if we assume Belos is lying and the Titan isn't speaking to him, but maybe it could be speaking to Luz (whispers in Yesterday's Lie)
If we count people learning Glyphs as the Titan speaking to them, then maybe the Titan did speak to Phillip and his brother, but stopped after their fallout, and is trying again with Luz, to better results.
One last thing, from a character growth perspective on this parallel, Luz's ultimate test is reconciling with her mother, while Phillip's was reconciling with his brother, which he failed

  • @amethystsavage4018
    @amethystsavage4018 Před 2 lety +13

    Here’s what I think:
In 1635, Philip Wittebane and his brother founded Gravesfield and were lured into the demon realm by a witch (as stated in Yesterday’s Lie). We already know that Belos, Hunter, and Kikimora is supposed to be an opposing parallel to Luz, Eda, and King. I think this witch (who is possibly the collector) tricked Philip and his brother into doing something dangerous, much like how Eda needed Luz to get King’s crown in the pilot. But it was something much more dangerous.
I read somewhere in this comment section that Philip’s brother’s clone is named “Hunter” bc he was an actual hunter in real life. We know the collector is someone who poaches beasts from the Owl Beast’s origin story. So maybe the collector lured them to fetch a creature they could get on their own. That creature is what got Philip’s brother killed and what he keeps at bay with the palisman.
I think that’s why he curses out at witches and why he referred to this era as the Savage Ages. Instead of being fascinated by magic with the experience, Philip holds a grudge to it.

I don't know if it is just me, but Dell and Philip (Belos) look oddly similar. They look to be about the same age, which could confirm that Dell and Philip are brothers. Which does kinda make sense why Dell has a yellow robin with a scar across it's beak. This can also help prove that if Philip and Dell are the brothers who got stuck in the Boiling Isles, that the Clawthorn Clan also in Belos (Philip), which would be great. It would also be cool to see that those two are brothers since one used to make palismans, while the other devoured/destroyed them. Maybe the reason why Dell has a palisman with an injury similar to Philip (Belos), is because he made that palisman for his brother, wanting him to come with him and turn from his ways. Now, I am probably not right, but it would be pretty cool to see.
Edit: Also, in the episode, after Lilith punches Philip, he says he hates wild magic. Soooo, does this mean that Luz and Lilith were the cause of why Belos (Philip) is trying to get rid of wild magic. Cause they do say they don't want to cause any time paradoxes, which they could have done when Lilith punched Philip, making him hate wild magic. Then again, I'm probably wrong.

So if Philip is 100% Belos, it’s possible or even likely he went through a time pool to emerge 50 years before Luz arrived and rose to power as Emperor, creating the Coven system likely with the promise to unite all witches and that he could speak to the Titan. That would explain how he’s alive in the 1600s and now.
My guess is he and his brother were lured into the Boiling Isles by the witch they met on Earth, who was also the creator of the portal door, and thus the only humans on the Isles until Luz came along. That would mean all the companions Philip had on his expeditions were witches, and he likely already had it out for them like during Eclipse Lake where, like with the eclipse mirror here, he let them be sacrificed while getting what he wanted.
What’s interesting though is his journal entries seen through the echo mouse never showed his brother, and also that in his journal his goal was to build a portal door to get home while the Philip we meet only wants to find the Collector. He could have just lied in his journal about making a portal door like he did about the other stuff, saying he was making a door when in actuality it was all for something else.
I’m curious how Philip learned of the Day of Unity, since the Philip we meet is already becoming Belos and is set on seeing it through, and how he became who he is, not just the glyphs on his arm and his hatred of witches, but who or what told him of the Day of Unity, what it truly is, and why he wants it to happen. In one of his journal entries he mentioned he wants to show others this place. As for his brother, it’s likely he died or they merely got separated somehow, and since then Philip grew a disdain for the Isles.

Can we please appreciate the continuity in Belos having a crook in his nose as evidence of Lilith punching him? Philip has a very smoothly sloped nose in all his scenes before this point, yet Belos has a small bump between his eyes. Outcast that he was, after Lilith broke it he likely wasn’t able to set it properly himself, so even hundreds of years later he has a physical reminder of Lilith and Luz. To speculate wildly, it could be that the green scarring on the present Belos could be from an infection?

They actually foreshadowed meeting the Collector shortly after Luz first sticks her head into the portal of the Hecktatious period, with the left half of her face illuminated and the right half in shadow, mirroring both the face seen when Phillip used the mirror, and the art we've gotten of half a face that you guys theorized was the Collector. Perhaps hinting that Luz and the Collector are going to have opposite agendas when they do finally meet.
I also find it interesting how Phillip refers to Luz as 'Crab Maiden' on the bridge, meaning that he was aware of the fact that she came through the sand into that time from the very beginning, perhaps he had some knowledge of the time pools long before he started taking up the Belos persona, and thus figured that Luz was from a different time long before she had saved him in the alley.
As far as modern day Belos goes, and the words from the Plant Coven Head, I think that Belos realized that Luz hadn't gone back in time before her first confrontation with him because of Lilith's presence. Since he knew that Lilith hadn't split Eda's curse by the time that he and Luz fought, he likely remembered Lilith's face (and particularly, her one grey eye) and remembered her when Lilith first joined the Emperor's Coven. Basically, I believe he either took a shot in the dark and was betting that Luz hadn't been back in time by the time of the Coven Day festivities, or that he has been tracking the time pools via his own methods and knew that a Deadwardian era pool hadn't shown itself by that point in time, and so knew that Luz hadn't found one to that era yet.

On Philip's arms, the same glyph combo he used to get to the collector door seemed to be on his arms. I think that perhaps using this specific combo has caused his sickness. While I liked the last episode more, this was still a really great episode. And a major part of that was cool aunt Lilith. It was so nice to see her and Luz bond in this episode. King also being acknowledged as a grandchild and the return of Steve was also a major plus.
Luz's family on the Boiling Isles has really grown and counting her family in the Human Realm she has quite a big family: Two awesome moms: Camalia and Eda, a twin sister: Vee, a little brother: King, some pretty great grandparents: Gwen and Dell, a crazy uncle: Hooty, a cool aunt: Lilith, an awesome girlfriend who will be her wife one day, Amity, and a pair of pets, Owlbert and Ghost.
Also, it seems the fan theory about Belos and Philip being one and the same was true, but most of us thought he was at least a decent dude while building his portal before whatever happened changed him into Belos, but it seems he was either always a jerk or whatever happened to curse him with those Glyphs happened a lot earlier. However, it seems the theory of him planning to use Hunter as a sacrifice and a new body or him using The Day of Unity to heal his curse wasn't true, as in this episode Belos says he just has to live long enough to see his plan completed, so it doesn't look like he has any intention of surviving after The Day of Unity, which makes him even more dangerous then we thought because to borrow a quote from Yu-Gi-Oh GX, "A man with no future should have nothing to fear." So the battle our heroes are in for maybe even tougher than we thought, even if they do free Raine and convince others like Hunter and other Coven Heads to defect.

I wonder if Eda’s portal only worked because of her owl beast? Owls are the only creatures we’ve ever seen other than giraffes, and the mural we saw on the owl house makes me wonder if owls are some kind of deities in the demon realm.

I just realized that the Coven tattoo things that limit a witches magic to one type might be a refined and fully functioning version of whatever Philip did to his arm. The stamps might be hundreds of tiny glyphs

I think the biggest implications of this episode are the hints towards non-euclidean glyphs. As Luz, for now, only has worked with the glyphs in a euclidean form (flat planes). But Phillip seems to work on non-euclidean planes (arm/tube). Implying that there are much more advanced combinations of glyphs ready to explore.

Hello, I always enjoy your videos about the owl house theories! I recently rewatch the season 2 and I found something. In the newest series of owl house called”Any sport in a storm” hunter was obsessed getting the golden guard old patch to proved he is worthy to wear the golden guard patch. But in season2 episode 10 “Yesterday’s lie” when number5 goes inside the museum there was an golden guard old patch and they were more pathes around Luz’s home(aka. Gravesfield) as well! I hope it might help u out and have some theory about thisTT

So there must be a connection between Philip, Hunter, and the Clawthorne's. The blue palisman in Philip's bag, Dell's yellow palisman, and Flapjack (Hunter's palisman) there must be some connection. But you might think that the blue palisman was Bluefang's, but there was another one shown in that bag, so there is a possibility.

SO GLAD TO SEE DEL’S PALISMAN AND FLAPJACK BEING MENTIONED TOGETHER! I remember Dana saying that birds were a clawthorn thing at one point, so that coupled with the scars only added to the already huge “belos and the clawthorns have a connection” fire

Anyone else had a chuckle that the Time Pools were introduced in a book called *“History’s Top 10 Plot Holes?”*
Also missed opportunity to reference The Collector in Marvel Comics in my opinion.

Between Philip's scar growing when he consumes palisman and talking to the collector, did anyone else notice belos' theme begin playing after philip consumes the palisman. I ended up finding a compilation of belos' theme and when you speed it up, it sounds like what we heard in Philip's cave but in a different pitch.

When watching this episode, you see Philip has glyphs all over his right arm. My theory is, he carved those glyphs into his arm, trying to harness what magic he could muster up as a human. Something, however, goes very wrong, and it's affecting his body as a whole - almost like a curse of sorts - thus the name Philip/Belos (I'm pretty certain they're the same person) gave "Wild Magic". But then I also thought back to an earlier episode "Hunting Palismans" where Hunter is trying to help subdue the effects of Belos's condition, but when the Emperor has a small temper tantrum, his body deforms a bit as he punches a wall out of anger with what looked like a form of Abomination magic, but the arm he was also using, as we could see was his right arm - not only that, but Belos also gets angry when Hunter questions how "Wild Magic" did this to him in the first place, where he'd use intimidation as a way of evading the question. Almost like he didn't want to admit he had done this to himself - that he himself harnessed Wild Magic. He claims to despise anyone that uses any type of Wild Magic, and I believe if the Boiling Isle found out, he had also used it to gain power, it wouldn't look good for his image, and with the day of unity so close by....Tell me what you all think!
