    I personally think that overcoats only look good if they go past the knee, especially for the vintage/old money look, so I would go for the longest one

    Great video. I love a navy blazer. One in wool with braze buttons in the winter and one in linen with bone buttons for the summer. I also love Belgian loafers. I would add Nantucket Red chinos. They look great on the Cape in the summer and in Palm Beach in the winter. With respect to an overcoat I would include a Camel Hair Polo Coat.

    Pants were always cuffed in the Ivy look but manufacturers found they could save money (fabric) by hemming pants. Almost no manufacturers offer unfinished pants that could be cuffed or hemmed, again because saving one or two inches of fabric per pants can save a company hundreds of thousands of dollars when manufacturing 100,000 pants.

    Great video Lukas, the Ivy League style is the one I've adopted. A couple of thoughts & a question: You're so right about cream coloured chinos, such a step up from tan. I notice your tie is striped from right to left, not the athentic US Brooks Bros, style left to right! And the question: how do you feel about wearing a tie with a button down shirt? (no, I don't use that dreadful abbreviation lol). As an Englishman I just can't bring myself to do it!

      I only use the OCBD to save space for the text in the video 😁
      I read somewhere that it's usually not recommended to wear a tie with a button down shirt, but I actually kind of like the look.
      How about you?
      I've seen Simon Crompton and also the guys from The Armory wear button down shirts with a tie and I personally think they make it look great and casual.

    • @barrymurphy1337
      @barrymurphy1337 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@Lukas_Schanderl It seems hard-wired into my brain that a button-down shirt DOES NOT go with a tie. Don't get me wrong, an OCBD (now you've got me doing it😉) is my daily casual go-to when I'm not wearing a tie and when you see photos of John Cassavetes totally rocking the look or Gregory Peck peering over his sunglasses with the top button popped & skinny tie there can be no doubt its a very cool style. Do you have any experience of the tab collar Lukas? I thinking a tab collar shirt maybe my next sartorial investigation.

    hello! about the blazer. single vent or double vent?
    i might go to a tailor.
    and since it's gonna be unlined, there probably won't any padding. but what if i have weak shoulders and would like to help the situation?

    • @Lukas_Schanderl
      @Lukas_Schanderl  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks for your comment, Pierce.
      I went for a double vent blazer.
      Maybe you could also go for wider peak lapels to create a larger V-line in your upper body?
      And maybe you could add a tiny bit of extra padding, but not too much to make it look unnatural.

  • @SimonChambers
    @SimonChambers Před 4 měsíci +1

    I love my loafers! Both suede and regular leather :). I should add a blazer back to my wardrobe again, but I'm usually pretty happy with either a suit or a sports coat, and don't really feel the lack of a blazer. I agree with you on red pants- I bought burgundy cords for this winter :).
    I do a lot of striped, rep ties, but am also looking at more foulards to round out my collection. I agree with you on red/dark green too.
    I'm with you that the alpaca coat looks better, although the navy is great too!
    In terms of sweater colours, I would add burgundy to your list. I have really been loving that colour the last couple of years!

    Most will get more use out of the sport jacket than the true blazer. Thinner wales will look less "country" overall? Pleated front chinos and other trousers will look more formal. Ivy Style and "old money" are not necessarily the same thing, since most people equate OM with more subdued looks than the brighter preppy looks even though it's largely just a rename for Trad.

      That's not a trench coat because it doesn't go past your knees. Also, many might prefer the Car Coat to the full overcoat, etc. The most typical Ivy look would actually be the Duffel coat because it's more a true cold weather coat than a businessman's overcoat.

      The point is these guys are in COLLEGE, so they're still spending less money on their wardrobes which aren't going to follow them so much into the post-grad business world over half century ago and all that. So now people are taking these former student looks and weekend looks and using them more and more for office looks and such on days that aren't just Office Casual Fridays now.

    Personally I don't think a button down shirt should be worn with a jacket or tie. One reason is that your collar should be tucked under the jacket lapel. i.e. there should be no gap. The button-down collar makes this very difficult.

      I think that just applies for 'dressed' shirts i.e. cutaway collars and co.
      The point of going OCBD is to adopt a more relaxed look without getting the austerity of a wide collar. I personally think that it looks odd to wear a cutaway collar with a tweed jacket and flannel trousers, OCBD seems more appropriate as it is more casual.
