Some say he had hand problems, but I think he did what he was supposed to do when you're naturally a smaller fighter moving up the weight classes. Joe Calzaghe was another boxer who's career is like Floyd's. Retired undefeated but had a ton of knockouts early on only to have most of his later fights go to decision. Like Floyd he also messed his hands up hitting people too hard early on on his career. Just goes to show hitting really hard isn't always the best option
@@PolishBehemoth to be fair, Calzaghe didn't really fight Roy Jones either. Roy was well past his expiration date when that fight happened. Had it happened sooner, Calzaghe wouldn't have retired undefeated.
Crazy how he is so gifted and talented but has weak hands. Just goes to show that genetics don’t always hold you back Edit: By weak hands I mean in the sense that He couldn't throw as hard in his prime because they kept breaking and by that point were weaker so he fought smarter.
It's a shame how he couldn't KO people like he used to tho So eve if he's undefeated, people would still discredit him because of the lack of KO's or lack of drive to KO people
The real answer is short and simple. His dad went to prison and uncle roger took over as trainer. Sr was an offensive minded trainer while uncle roger was more of a defensive guru. Also fighting bigger guys made it harder to have the same knockout ratio.
Because he was a natural 130/135 pounder. Everyone was naturally bigger than him once he hit 140 and up besides Manny and Marquez. Plus the hand issues
If I was floyd I would have done the same thing, it's the smartest decision, but as a fan obviously everyone wants to see exciting fights. because of this I can never dislike the person for their choice, although I would like to see them go all out.
Majority of fans especially casual one's are either dense and lacking common sense or just playing ignorant while the more ignorant they are the more opinionated they are and you're right I'd rather be Mayweather who fight smart if I'm boxer like him too
You're 100% right, his hands play a huge role of shifting from pretty boy to money Mayweather, also for a boxer to do what Floyd did, with the hands he was born with it, it's even more impressive.
I used to think his fights were boring. Took me a good ten years, watching thousands of fights, becoming a student of the game to still think his fights are boring.
Hey man, another great video. Loving your channel. I have a recommendation. Could you make a video about how to fix boxing? I know you’ve touched on this a bit in other videos, but boxing used to be the biggest sport in America if not the world. There were multiple household names across multiple weight divisions, and especially heavyweight, and you just don’t see that anymore. MMA has more household names now than boxing, and it’s taking over the PPV crown as well. So what happened? And how do you fix it? Is it possible for boxing to have the same stranglehold it used to, and if so, how do we make it happen? Boxing has been declining since the 90’s, so if you made a video about why, and how to revive it, I’d appreciate it. It’s just as talent rich, competitive, and exciting as ever, but for whatever reason it’s just not as big. Whether that’s perception, the promoters, the confusing politics of it all, the fighters not being interesting enough, or whatever it may be. I think it would be a great video and do very well.
Facts whoever doesn't know about pretty boy Floyd doesn't know boxing, they call him a runner but they've never seen him in his prime, wether they like it or not he's the goat, pretty boy Floyd walked through everyone and one of the most ducked fighters if all time
@@Boytaklob Floyd Mayweather is the goat, beaten the most world champions while going undefeated, like I said like it or not he's the goat,he changed his style in his older years and was still as dominate, something former legends of the sport wasn't able to do, the only guys I can think of whose up there with Floyd is sugar ray leonard and lennox lewis
The thing is, even Pretty Boy wasn’t a one punch KO artist. He was a death by a thousand cuts type of KO artist. Though he threw more punches back then, he didn’t have pac or DLH level punch output but he didn’t need it because he’d seldomly miss a meaningful blow. Accuracy kills and he was deadly accurate.
Floyd had an excellent offense to go with his great defense. Best jab to the body and most accurate right hand ever. A nice check Hook. Capable of fighting at all ranges
another great offensive fight from Floyd is Mayweather versus Jesus Chavez. this fight greatly illustrates how Floyd implemented his shoulder roll into his offense. the upper cuts he landed on Jesus were spectacular!
I like the video, only critique is it sounds like ur reading off the script to much woukd be a lot smoother if u memorized it more imo, tha KS for the good video though keep up good work.
A decade ago when I first started boxing, I wasn’t appreciating Floyd’s magnificence. Now I’m a little older and got hit in the face a little bit 😅 Now I believe he is simply the best boxer in history
This video didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. But what they failed to mention was Floyd Mayweather Sr. was more defensive minded than Roger Mayweather. So when Floyd Mayweather Jr. transitioned from his uncle to his father as his trainer it effected his style.
He even talked about how also he considered his age and looking Roy Jones jr and Muhammad Ali how their styles were suited for young bodies but isn't working for them at a later stage. I'm so impressed by such a mind and of course minds around him who advice him these thimgs
I am a hard-core boxing (on the verge of historian) fan. Ike Williams and tito trinidad being my favourite fighters. But without a shred of doubt in any fibre of my knowledge has been the perfect (PRIZE FIGHTER) of any era, he may of had trouble with Duran in the early 80's or any member of the fabulous four. I still reckon Floyd is soooo good he would of beat them all.
Floyd ain’t beating Hearns and Hagler and I like Floyd a lot. Maybe he beats Duran and I’m 50/50 on Leonard. Hagler was too strong and Hearns was a monster. No one ever outboxed Thomas Hearns. You either knocked him out or you lost.
If memory serves, didn't Floyd also start getting trained more by his father rather than his uncle around the mid-00's as well? (though he bounced between the two...) And Floyd Sr. was definitely more defensive-minded than Roger.
Good video. Yeah Floyd Marquez & Pacquiao were smaller guys fighting at welter. Floyd still had power but as you said his hands made him become more accurate more defensive more economical. He had to stretch out his career to get that 50-0. Now if you press Floyd he will step it up and get you out of there but in actual fights he tends to want to outbox the opponent and outsmart them than KO them. In sparring though Floyd is a different animal to fight night. He slept a few guys well with blistering combinations and accumulation of punishment.
It’s good Floyd jr develop a defensive style while still keeping his signature skill we knew him for Developing new styles helps you stay undefeated rather you stay in same weight class or move up
Floyd was always a Defensive Master Day 1 it was the first thing his dad taught em was Defense it’s just when he was pretty Boy he choose to let his hands go more
His hands became more fragile as his career progressed so he could never really let them go. I also think his mobility declined rapidly so he couldn't really "dance" as much in the ring and give a sustained attack by hitting his opponent from different angles leading to a KO . After the Hatton fight, Floyd's foot work became more laboured. I even remember watching All Access and Floyd was doing some road work, and you could see he wasn't running fluidly. You could tell that he had reached that stage where your legs really seem heavy due to aging. It's a natural process but I believe Floyd changed his style to adjust. He stood in front of his opponent more, conserved his energy more and just boxed more strategically.
He couldn’t use the same athleticism/quickness as he did when he was pretty boy, so he was forced to become a complete fundamentalist. MJ did the same thing with his game.
Completely brilliant . He changed his strategy and mentality . Because of the extra weight to fight bigger fighters . Plus of the trouble with his hands. So he beat heavier fighters based on decisions . Boxing Legend Floyd Mayweather beat the other boxing Legend's boxing record of famous boxer : Rocky Marciano , his last boxing record was : 49-0. Floyd Mayweather boxing record is : 50-0 . So by far Boxing Legend Floyd Mayweather is the best. His stamina , and endurance. Plus his strategy and defensive style put his as the elite . Plus he has exhibitions where he wins and still makes millions . Simply amazing.

The man came from 130 and fought at 147/154 Most won’t keep knocking people out while going up in weight , especially from that far down That’s like Inoue knocking out Crawford
The family philosophy always been "don't get hit", I am coached and good friends with Senior and Roger's cousin and he tells me story's about how they used to go to the park and fight other kids. The emphasis is ending fights, Senior was a dancer with a very quick jab, Roger and Jack used violence Jr's biggest issue was his hands, if he could still throw power without worrying about his hands he would still be dropping guys, instead he had To adapt his game which he did beautifully. I’m not the biggest fan of Floyd as a person but as a fighter.. man he’s literally the reason why I’ve wanted to be a defense first fighter and why my favorite coach of all time taught defense first before offense.. and it’s funny when ppl say he’s boring to watch because if you box or have boxed before when you watch him you’re mesmerized because he’s like a wizard… but of course just like most things in life you have to do it to know it and appreciate it so if you haven’t boxed you just won’t be able to see and understand all the little nuances and things he’s doing.

The thing is he didn't really become famous until he became Money Mayweather after the De La Hoya and Hatton fight I remember hearing about him in 2008 and I wasn't into boxing at the time

That’s probably why Calzaghe adopted that pitter patter style of volume punching that he was often criticized for. He made arm punching work for him.

The real answer is short and simple. His dad went to prison and uncle roger took over as trainer. Sr was an offensive minded trainer while uncle roger was more of a defensive guru. Also fighting bigger guys made it harder to have the same knockout ratio.

Just enough punches to get the decision is an understatement. Floyd’s fights weren’t close AT ALL. Possibly the most dominant boxer ever

His hands giving him issues is the biggest reason he changed his style. He used to put some kind of medication before fights in them to numb them.

Watching Floyds early fights he was aggressive and fast but wasn't as refined.
The hungrybox of boxing, incredibly defensive but you can't help but respect it.
favourite channel on youtube
He was a beast back then even knockout the Big Show himself
It’s good Floyd jr develop a defensive style while still keeping his signature skill we knew him for
Developing new styles helps you stay undefeated rather you stay in same weight class or move up
Floyd was always a Defensive Master Day 1 it was the first thing his dad taught em was Defense it’s just when he was pretty Boy he choose to let his hands go more
Real talk
He was just an old boxer that was out of his prime, adjusting to his situation.
@@appollo1826 Very true
He couldn’t use the same athleticism/quickness as he did when he was pretty boy, so he was forced to become a complete fundamentalist. MJ did the same thing with his game.

Completely brilliant . He changed his strategy and mentality . Because of the extra weight to fight bigger fighters . Plus of the trouble with his hands. So he beat heavier fighters based on decisions . Boxing Legend Floyd Mayweather beat the other boxing Legend's boxing record of famous boxer : Rocky Marciano , his last boxing record was : 49-0. Most won’t keep knocking people out while going up in weight , especially from that far down
That’s like Inoue knocking out Crawford
The family philosophy always been "don't get hit", I am coached and good friends with Senior and Roger's cousin and he tells me story's about how they used to go to the park and fight other kids. The emphasis is ending fights, Senior was a dancer with a very quick jab, Roger and Jack used violence
Jr's biggest issue was his hands, if he could still throw power without worrying about his hands he would still be dropping guys, instead he had To adapt his game which he did beautifully. Added, I can't fault a guy trying to protect his head either.
During early career Floyd jr was a featherweight like erik morales and marco antonio barerra and those would’ve been fun fights at featherweight
