as an MMA fan, it's so weird to look over at a fellow combat sport and see this complex of a system being used. It's confusing as hell whenever I do watch boxing. While there are other big promotions in MMA such as PFL, ONE, and Bellator, it's almost unanimously agreed upon that the UFC champion is the best fighter on the planet in that division period. Also, the number of weight classes in boxing surprises me as well. The UFC has 8 men's weight classes and 4 women's weight classes, while pro boxing recognizes 17 weight classes. Idk it just seems like another way to make more boxing titles because the UFC operates fine with their 9 total weight classes
That is not true at all. UFC is just more popular in Western culture and that doesn’t mean fighters from UFC are better than fighters from other promotions. Besides, one championship has more viewers and fans than the UFC and should arguably represent the sport of MMA
The UFC’s system is great for fans and entertainment but the fighters are being completely screwed over and every single UFC fighter (Usman, Nganou, Oliveria etc) is way way way underpaid compared to the money they generate, its almost sick how bad they are underpaid. While in boxing the fighters have the power and the organizations basically follow the fighters meaning the fighters are fairly compensated but that equals less meaningful fights and worse fan experience

I love how your content is relayed. Smart and to the point, easy to listen to and educated. I like your opinions so far, let’s see if we have differences any time soon.
When you say MMA, you mean UFC? People tend to associate MMA wth UFC a lot. There are many promotions out there. While it's a sport, different mma promotions have their own set of rules that's why a UFC champ can't call out a fight to a ONE champ. But it may only happen if the two companies have a joint event to unify the titles and agreed to have a common set of rules. MMA is still growing, and time will tell if it'll end up like boxing with one set of rules, but multiple championships.
I actually liked the multiple belts in the 3 belt era. It seemed to keep exciting fights frequent and varied while also giving the best fighters the ability to unify belts and prove themselves. The 4 belt era is now too sparse with solid fighters. Guys like Loma who understand the sport will take the best of the best and simply target belt holders or guys waiting on the belt and can keep things exciting but most fights feel like exhibition matches at this point
Im an MMA fan mostly, but I have a noob boxing question for you: What exactly are the "super" and "junior" classes? Does that mean each class is basically divided three times when compared to the UFC? Like....is there a "Junior Welterweight" a "Normal Welterweight" and a "Super Welterweight"? If that is true and then there are 4 main belts......In boxing, you could have 12 different champions where the UFC would only have one. LMK if this is wrong, but yea, confusing and too many belts.

As a boxing fan, I have no problem in saying that boxing is the most out of touch dinosaur sport out there. It's dying from the inside and the boomers refuse to do anything about it. It has so many ancient and ridiculous traditions that should have been phased out long ago. I read comments from young fans on how hard it is to get into boxing, the powers that be need to put themselves in the shoes of combat sports fans in 2024.
The solution to this new 4 belt area is to become undisputed. Which in its own right is pretty impressive. At that point you’re the king of kings in that division. That would be like a UFC champion fighting the champions in other promotions and taking their belts, hence completely dominated that division all together.
@@bulbousham4431 why though. All the best fighters are under UFC. Why make a UFC champion fight lesser competition in Bellator. What does that prove when the best fighters in world are in UFC. And say that happens then what. The UFC champ has to defend his Bellator belt against inferior opponents at Bellator? Hold up the UFC division full of hungry killers because he has to defend his belt at Bellator? Hell nah keep that shit under one house. Thats why boxing is the way it is. Too many sanctioning bodies, too many greedy promoters, too many undefeated fighters, too many rankings.
@@bway8793 we cannot say the best fighters are in the UFC when the UFC is signing fighters from other promotions. I do agree the UFC tries to make it so they do have the absolute best and for the most part they do, but they know theres better talent out there in the smaller promotions and fighters who compete in other disciplines. As for boxing, yes, greedy promoters, the undefeated stigma and cherry picking is what ruins boxing but simply having too many sanctioning bodies isn’t the issue, is the lack of mandated structure it needs. Boxers can fight in other sanctioning bodies without a problem, unlike MMA fighters who are under 1 promotion. These boxers COULD go fight one another and make consistent super fights happen. The problem is they just don’t.

I hate to compare boxing to the ufc… however I do think if there was a fixed belt system for every weight division it would make boxing a lot more new-fan friendly. It would never happen though lol
MMA and boxing have the same system. Both have multiple governing bodies within the sport. In MMA however the UFC is a little bigger then its closest two competitors in ONE Championship and Bellator so its easy to get confused and think its the UFC thats the main governing body. If boxing fans valued the lineage more to the point that it would hold more weight than the belts themselves, then maybe we'd see more superfight. Alltho there's another big hurdle in the way and thats the tv/streaming networks themselves.
@@jmgonzales7701 I agree but ONE is pretty big. The point remains tho, the UFC is not an umbrella corporation to the sport of MMA, its an organisation within the sport, just like One or Bellator and just like the WBA,WBO,WBC and IBF.
I do see the points that people make when they say there are to many belts, but thanks to these belts Boxers are now getting much higher pay days and I will always side with the fighter making money over fan enjoyment for the most part. However there is an easy fix just have the boxing commissions actually work together to force more unification fights.
It's good that the fighters are getting paid their worth BUT it is still bad for the sport. It's simply just handing out participation trophies at this point.
Good point, but the problem is that it's not just as easy as you make it sounds to be. Boxing commission will NOT work togethher because of one simple fact, money and greed. Come on, there are so many problems caused by boxing politics. Do you really think these commissions will just decide to work with each other. With all the promoters, needy fighters and politics in the way, the problem will NEVER be resolved. This situation will just keep growing worse. As for the fighters getting paid, it's all great and all, but they should still atleast reduce some of the belts, because what the fans want is still important. Without the fans, boxing will slowly die out.

What you need is one world champion at each weight class. Every other boxer can choose which organisation they want to work up the ranking of. Once a fighter becomes WBC/IBF or what Ever that franchise’ champion can then fight the single world champion and if they win they drop the current title and become the world champion. This could rotate between boxing organisations each taking a turn. You could in essence have 4 world title fights for the single belt per year. Plus many other individual title fights to become each bodies champion.
this is kind of starting to happen with the ufc with young fighters realizing they could be making more money fighting elsewhere like PFL or Bellator a recent example being shane burgos signing with the PFL
Incredibly well put ! There are just way too many belts in boxing and like you said it just devalues each belt compared to the likes of the UFC where they just have one belt for Undisputed. No idea if the sanctioning bodies can get together, but at this rate and the number of belts which they are making i wonder if i can put in an application to get a belt in my name 🤣
Love the video! When I started getting into boxing I was really confused of all the belts and why boxer A is not fighting boxer B, etc. In a perfect world, yes, one organization is the best solution or one tournament similar to the World Boxing Series. I, personally, think divide the divisions to each organizations. I mean, they have enough weight divisions for everyone. A higher sanction fee for those crossing over other weight division to make everyone happy.
Ive got a crazy eureka about how to fix this and make boxing like the ufc where only the best fight the best. Someone with big pockets or enough wealthy investors would need to not only make a seperate belt but a promotion along with that belt (like the ufc), however, the twist would be that anyone who fought in this league would be prevented under contract, from holding any of the other belts from the other governing bodies. It would take time, but eventually boxing fans would start to watch this league as they would offer the fights people truly want.
You are forgetting that fighting promotional companies like the PBC hold belts hostage so if you were to narrow it down to one belt as it used to be PVC will protect that Bell look at what they tried to do in the heavyweight division at the welterweight division not just protecting the belts but they're protecting their champions from losing those belts and make every effort to keep it in house
I knew boxing was corrupted (not the only sport obviously), but I never realized it goes this deep. Unfortunately, I think the only way for these organization to unify into one is for boxing to lose all its popularity and money. That would (probably?) force each one to merge since their belts are worthless anyways. But this will will never happen.
It’s a double sided problem. The fighters get paid more due to the organization being separate unlike MMA where you get signed to the UFC etc. the best fight the best but you get what you get money wise.
No, ufc doesn’t have a CBA (like NBA for example) therefore, ufc keeps the majority of the money. They control the fighters. Since there’s no CBA or union in the ufc, the pay is the biggest problem and ufc keeps the majority of it. At least in the NBA, athletes get 49% of the revenue, which is why you see even a rookie makes more than a UFC champion 🤣 That’s embarrassing.
@@caliph86 incorrect, boxers fight for all organizations WBC, WBO, WBA, and the IBF. Promotions and organizations are separate by law through the Ali Act.
It’s different in solo competition sports the same for golf, tennis, track, cycling, racing and so on. They aren’t contracted to a league to win a single championship.
I also do believe it’s way too many belt but, when someone gains all the belt and become undisputed it has so much more impact and carrys more weight than for example ufc becoming champions.
This is the worst era of boxing in terms of the proliferation of belts. Each weight class can literally have 4 “world champions” who can “hide” from the other “champs” and never fight them. Boxing desperately needs one governing body, one belt and SAME DAY weigh-ins to see who the BEST in the division actually is! If boxing had one champ in each division again, the sport would skyrocket in interest again. Having ONE identified champ in each division builds more interest and makes charismatic and engaging champs household names.
I think the biggest problem is that the belts are controlled by the organizations and NOT a promotion. MMA belts mean something because every promotion has their own. Same with various sports organizations with the "possible" exception being Soccer/Football due to special interleague tournaments.
@@caliph86 Most of them are nobodies that are fed to pad records to bigger stars, only one fight is interesting on a boxing card and thats the main event, plus its rigged more than mma.
tbh i got into boxing recently due to youtube boxing and love watching and learning about different fighters… but wow this is fucked i never expected this and its really a bummer to hear about
One thing I don't see people bringing up in the comment section is that boxers only have so many fights in them, and if they wanna get out of the business without serious head trauma, that number is pretty low. Sure in basketball and football, there is a certain time where you age out, but in boxing the physical toll each match takes on you is much higher. Therefore, fighters don't want to fight a bunch of bouts to win a belt. Nor do they want to fight a very difficult opponent which might seriously injure them if they already have their bag. I agree that more competitive matches would be more compelling as a viewer, but as a boxer the current competitive market of belts is ideal. Less bodily risk, equal potential reward. That being said, a balance needs to be struck. We don't want fighters having to jump in 100 rings to get a belt, but we also want to see them perform at their highest physical potential like all sports. That's why watching Muhammad Ali fight was so compelling: he entered that ring willing to put everything he had on the table no matter the cost. Unfortunately, the greatest paid the price for it, but influenced millions while doing so. I hope we can come up with a system that still pushes fighters to their limits and makes them a living without all this bs belt headache or excess blood being spilt.
Agreed completely. My only comment is that mma has similar issues - belator, pride, Rizin, ONE championship... UFC is recognized as top dog for a lot of good reasons but it's complex. Imagine if WBC sanctioned matches allowed spinning backfists but no one else did, or anything along those lines. Fighting sports are rife with these $/rule set/shadiness issues. I think it's just interesting as we're watching the "sport" of mma develop.
as long as UFC pays the most, everyone will want to fight for them so in general the best will always tend to be in the UFC. It's like the NFL. You have the CFL. You have XFL. But the best will always be in the NFL cause they pay the most and what type of person who believes they are the best sell themselves short by being part of an organization that pays less.
I think 4 belt system can be functional but there must be strict rules that every lets say 4 years there must be some undisputed champ. So unification fight must happen sooner or later. This would create system where top fighters are facing each other.
The only way this would change is as a result of a crisis, which is, for example, when fans realize that the current system is nonsense > get frustrated > lose interest > stop watching > causing organizations + promoters + fighters to stop making money which would hypothetically prompt them to unite organizations to ignite the fans' interest again
The advantage of having many belts is that you can hype up fights easier. Calling someone a champion immediately raises someones credibility for the casual fan. It also sounds more impressive when the ring announcer names all the belts the boxer has won instead of saying 'former x pounds world champion', like they do in MMA.
Wrong!!! I really dont care when they announce the belts either, cause i know it dont mean shit. The way UFC does it is way way better, for example, Khamzat vs Gilbert burns was more 🔥 than many boxing main events in this year and it was not even a main event, and they’re both ranked 3&10
Bro there is that many pro belts because you have considering all 4 organization have 17 weight classes from super bantamweight to heavyweights then they do shit like he said “super champ” just so they can save the good fights later like they did manny vs Floyd
Boxings promotion is very very bad. I didn't find out about loma vs teofimo or canelo vs bivol until the day before. Even the second fury vs wilder fight wasn't marketed very well.
Don't forget silver, super, franchise, diamond, interim, regular, regional for each of the 4 major belts, plus secondary organizations, most prominently the IBO with it's own regional straps.
Should be one belt givem to the Champion and an interim champ status for the next to challenge. Champion means a person who has surpassed all rivals in a contest or other competition so how can there be 4?
As a casual fan with not much deep knowledge of Boxing. Wouldn't it make sense to have Belts for each continent, then an overall World Champion belt? and in order to be eligible to compete for World Champion you have to own the continental belt at the time. So at the very least there would always be 7 Competitors for the World Champion Belt, all of whom are the best on their respective continents and they have to fight each other. So top boxers are fighting top boxers and there is a magnitude surrounding it.
There is *one* solution, but it'll be rough at first. These organizations need to fail. With how they operate, this will be inevitable. After they fail, the right people need to come in and build a new organization with the goal of *real* competition, which will in turn bring in better revenue in the long run
The promotions are a bigger issue than the sanctioning bodies. The best not fighting the best because of these organizations is a little bit of myth to me. We had 3 undisputed fights with in a 12 month span, we had the 2 best just fight at 130, we are most likely getting a Heavyweight undisputed fight between Fury and Usyk which hasnt happened since the 3 belt era, and once Donaire got a belt again we got the rematch at bantam that everyone was asking for. If one promotion has all the belts they will happily make undisputed and unification bouts, but when it comes to cross promo that's when the issues arise. We may never get beterbiev vs Bivol or Benavidez vs Andrade because promotions like PBC hate sharing revenue with other promotions unless it is a huge PPV bout such as Wilder vs Fury. I think people waiting for Spence vs Crawford is just blowing this narrative out of proportion. But multiple promotions isn't a bad thing overall, it gives fighters choices if they feel one promotion is not treating them right and stops monopolistic practices like what goes on with the UFC.
I actually dont have an issue with the 4 belts given the number of boxers at a given time in every weight class, what I absolutely HATE is having those stupid "Regular", "Super", "Emeritus", "Franchise" etc. It just dilutes the champions for each org and confuses people. Have an interim for injured champions with a set timeline for either a unification or dropping the belt outright. Sanction fees? Then go have per continent champions as step up ladder title
So this i a long proposal but what do you guys think of it? They need a Supreme council that arranges fights, only between champions. Almost like how soccer does the champions league. A competition between national Champs and top teams to decide the Supreme champ every year. The belt orgs are too strong to get rid of, like the english and spanish league. But if we make a new stronger org that has power to make them work together and force fights itd be much better. That org would take the current belt holders and possibly top contenders if needed and force them to fight for the supreme belt. Make the belt the next best thing to undisputed champions, and push the holder of that belt to become undisputed. That would take power away from the orgs and force them to at least compromise. After one or two supremacy bouts most divisions will have an undisputed champ. give them power to force legacy fights, and strip organizations belt holders for not honoring their obligations to the supremacy belt, have a contender take the regular belt and go into the supremacy belt. And the Supreme champ can challenge any belt holder in the weight class above, INCLUDING THE SUPRME BELTs. So charlo canelo and haney would be Supreme undisputed champ. They would be grandfathered in and have to defend that belt. The Winner of spence crawford will be the same. Any champion can fight another for the Supreme belt and first to get in in a weight class hold it to incentive fighter to go for it immediately. if two other champions fight and unify they don't get full credit for it, only the man who beats the the first supreme champion can claim that honor.
Read the first sentence and I don’t need to read the rest, how do you make boxing organizations follow this “boxing supreme council”? They literally just don’t have to and no one can force them to, and do you realize each organization is a supreme council in theory. The WBC is based in Mexico, WBO is based in Puerto Rico, WBA Panama, and IBF New Jersey. Even if US or EU lawmakers intervene only 2 of the bodies would be subject to their laws as only the IBF and WBO are US based and the two most known bodies are international
Does uniting really solve everything? cause the ufc has some pretty large and unique issues I would be quite afraid of coming into play. As much as the endless belts annoys me it annoys me way less than fighters earning so much less.
Just do it like the UFC? Am I wrong here? To me the UFC champions all have meaning as there is just one per weight division meaning they are the CHAMPION of the division. To be the best you have to fight the best.
If there was only 1 belt, they’d just hold the belt hostage. Davis never fought Lomachenko while he had his belt and dropped it once he was a mandatory AJ just lost his belt for the 2nd time, this time for good, and never fought wilder or fury and almost ducked Usyk

The unified title the “carrot on a stick” to keep the best fighter looking to obtain it, while the promoters can capitalize on multiple title fights. Plus it just looks cool for a fighter to wear 3 or 4 belts
I think having 4 different promotions give top level boxers around the globe a chance to fight at a high level. Every time a top guy from one promotion fights another top guy from another promotion, they both end up moving the needle more often than top MMA fighters tend to do so.

Right now in boxing, it feels like everyone is getting awarded with a participation belts. It's very stupid and weird, hence why I am purely a UFC fan or just an MMA fan in general.
In MMA, there are other promotional companies but each one has one belt for each division. Another thing is in MMA you can lose a fight and always come back with popularity etc. In boxing, if you lose that undefeated status it is as if it's the end of the world.

Imagionn thinking boxingg becoming a monopoly, like the UFC, is a good idea.
as an MMA fan, it's so weird to look over at a fellow combat sport and see this complex of a system being used.
@@trollaccount4270 nah, UFC fighters definitely hold greater prestige over the other promotions. Mma doesn't have this problem

Always liked that idea of a ufc champ going after the other promotions belts. Too bad that won't ever happen tho
@@bway8793 I see your point. Interesting

Plus many other individual title fights to become each bodies champion.
it would never work its not all one organization and there are too many fighters. There has to be a separation

this is kind of starting to happen with the ufc with young fighters realizing they could be making more money fighting elsewhere like PFL or Bellator a recent example being shane burgos signing with the PFL

Hey man I love your videos
Algorithm is feeding your videos to me and I am totally ok with that lmao. Keep up the great content 👑
Why would anyone pay any attention to this?
It’s a double sided problem. The fighters get paid more due to the organization being separate unlike MMA where you get signed to the UFC etc. the best fight the best but you get what you get money wise.
No, ufc doesn’t have a CBA (like NBA for example) therefore, ufc keeps the majority of the money.
They control the fighters.
Since there’s no CBA or union in the ufc, the pay is the biggest problem and ufc keeps the majority of it.
At least in the NBA, athletes get 49% of the revenue, which is why you see even a rookie makes more than a UFC champion 🤣

You get a belt, and you belt and you get a belt
So how do we know who the best fighter is in MMA at least under boxing all the fighters are under one umbrella.

total there will be like 68 champion in the world if each of them only hold one belt at the time😂
And now there is this bridgerweight which is just nonsense. They do not care for the integrity of the sport. Its brown envelopes all the way.
Then don't box if u don't want to get injure
@@eito9006 exactly like wtf?
Ok then…go to another sport it’s as simple as that
They need to have a tournament cycle similar to the Olympics. The top 2 representing each belt organization, every 4 years.
I use to be a fan of IBO back in the day
Imagine how cool it would be if there was just one belt for a division like ufc, so we could really know who the best boxer is
In MMA we don’t even know who the best fighter is. UFC fighters aren’t always the best.
Thank you,I always have that question
WRONG!
This video makes WWE belts look more impressive lol
As a casual fan with not much deep knowledge of Boxing. Wouldn't it make sense to have Belts for each continent, then an overall World Champion belt? and in order to be eligible to compete for World Champion you have to own the continental belt at the time. So at the very least there would always be 7 Competitors for the World Champion Belt, all of whom are the best on their respective continents and they have to fight each other. So top boxers are fighting top boxers and there is a magnitude surrounding it.
I have a question about the lineal champion title
If the "lineal champion" retires undefeated does the lineal title go to the No2 guy?
I appreciate this video and the breakdown of what we now call the "four belt era"
Hey boss, anyway you can talk about purse bids and how those work?
I am starting my own boxing organization. The BBW. I haven't figured out what that stands for but I like it.
Any champion can fight another for the Supreme belt and first to get in in a weight class hold it to incentive fighter to go for it immediately. if two other champions fight and unify they don't get full credit for it, only the man who beats the the first supreme champion can claim that honor.
ain’t nobody reading all that bruh
Read the first sentence and I don’t need to read the rest, how do you make boxing organizations follow this “boxing supreme council”? They literally just don’t have to and no one can force them to, and do you realize each organization is a supreme council in theory. The WBC is based in Mexico, WBO is based in Puerto Rico, WBA Panama, and IBF New Jersey. Even if US or EU lawmakers intervene only 2 of the bodies would be subject to their laws as only the IBF and WBO are US based and the two most known bodies are international
@fighterstalktv is doing a podcast about this as well
Does uniting really solve everything? cause the ufc has some pretty large and unique issues I would be quite afraid of coming into play. As much as the endless belts annoys me it annoys me way less than fighters earning so much less.
Just do it like the UFC? Am I wrong here? To me the UFC champions all have meaning as there is just one per weight division meaning they are the CHAMPION of the division. To be the best you have to fight the best.
A couple problems listed in the video
The problem is that boxers are all promoted by different people making it impossible for the best to fight the best
The ufc is NOT a sport. While Boxing is a sport. Hope this clears up all your confusion.
@@ritzkola2302 Mixed martial arts is a spot though. Thats what UFC is.
@@ritzkola2302 just like dazn is not a sport and the wbo is not a sport, you're a smart fella, u notice things, i like that 😀👍
Just watch the UFC, fighters have to fight every year.
Can we get your rankings for all the weight classes?
It’s interesting that you didn’t mention the Ring Magazine and the IBO, because they refute a lot of what you said
If there was only 1 belt, they’d just hold the belt hostage.
Davis never fought Lomachenko while he had his belt and dropped it once he was a mandatory
AJ just lost his belt for the 2nd time, this time for good, and never fought wilder or fury and almost ducked Usyk
He never ducked Usyk you clown wtf is this take, he wanted Usyk and when he lost he jumped immediately into the rematch
@@ericktellez7632 wtf are you talking about? AJ did indeed try and duck Usyk. Usyk came into heavyweight and tore it up and he refused to give him a fight until he had no choice but to fight or be stripped.
The WBO literally had to step in and tell Joshua he has to fight Usyk or he’d be fined and stripped
Fury also ducked Usyk as a mandatory instead fighting Wilder another time and he’s actively ducking him right now as he’s trying to make a Joshua fight instead of fighting the champion Usyk
@@kevinarzola4781 lmfaoo before AJ Usyk only had 2 heavyweight fights he didn’t tore anything up, why are u lying when you don’t know even the facts
@@ericktellez7632 bro what? You don’t know boxing that is now an established fact.
Before AJ, Usyk was the first ever unified cruiserweight champion, undefeated, knocked down Chisora who was supposed to be a title contender
@@kevinarzola4781 my boy i know but we are talking HEAVYWEIGHT, in your own comment “into heavyweight and tore it up” he only had two heavyweight fights before the AJ fight
Should keep it at the 4 belts and get rid of these meaningless ‘Regular’ and ‘Super’ belts as well as the Franchise belts, but the sanctioning bodies will never do this
Yes i agree with this
I mean why would they. Fans need to start realizing that everything revolves around money. Hell the world itself revolves around money
@@vince11harris the 4 belts should be retained but everything else should be gone.
@@jmgonzales7701 that’s fine
The unified title the “carrot on a stick” to keep the best fighter looking to obtain it, while the promoters can capitalize on multiple title fights. Plus it just looks cool for a fighter to wear 3 or 4 belts
I think having 4 different promotions give top level boxers around the globe a chance to fight at a high level. Every time a top guy from one promotion fights another top guy from another promotion, they both end up moving the needle more often than top MMA fighters tend to do so.
