    Pokemon BDSP is here! That's Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Pokemon Legends Arceus isn't too far around the corner. That means now is the perfect opportunity for me to explain the design origins and inspirations for EVERY Pokemon introduced in Generation 4! Every Sinnoh Pokemon! No Hisuian Pokemon though, they are probably all extinct by the time Hisui is renamed Sinnoh...

    Fun fact about Empoleon: it is as tall as the man it is based on, Napoleon (1,70 m), most people think that the French emperor was short in size, where in actuality, he was as tall as a modern average French man.

    • @sintanan469
      @sintanan469 Před 2 lety +222

      Napoleon being short was started as political propaganda to make the common man think he was less impressive than he was.
      Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your outlook, that propaganda stuck to this day.

    • @chrayez
      @chrayez Před 2 lety +172

      Not sure if this story is true or apocryphal, but one explanation I’ve heard for “napoleon was short” was that French and English measures used the same / similar names but had different actual lengths, and so his height in the longer French unit was a lower value than it would be in the English unit. (If true, it was almost certainly a known thing that the measures were different and the English just decided to ignore that in an attempt to belittle Napoleon)

      It's always a question what is intended and what is just interpretation. I personally don't think it's particularly likely that lunala actually pulls from neopegan religion, feels like Lockstin knows a lot about that stuff and about alchemy and can therefore easily find possible connections.
      But it's still entirely possible.
      And even if it's just his interpretation and not the interpretation of the original designers, it is a pretty cool interpretation that makes the pokemon seem cooler. So some of the ones I don't actually believe are intended I'm still going with, death of the author and all that.

      Maybe instead of due to the time of evolution, it may be according to the most recent find, and then the older find, which is often encountered first if you go forward to backward along time. As in for archaeology, you find the more recent fossil closer to topsoil, and you find a more ancient fossil deeper underground. So aging and evolution wise, it would make sense the earlier ancestor would evolve into a much more recently discovered descendant. But discovery wise, it makes sense that the "younger" one is one that's found more recently, while the "older" one is one that's found later much deeper in the earth during excavation.
      So I like your statement and I think it's fascinating.

    • @Devedrus
      @Devedrus Před 2 lety +6

      There's been a proposal (I think just at a conference, never full publication) that it's actually microevolution; the "older" the leg of the dracorex-stygimoloch-pachycephalosaurus triad the more recent it is in the Hell Creek strata too. So it could be like a "primal reversion" to gain even more ancient power

    • @dragonsurge1096

    49:49 Maybe that's what makes Heatran special or a legendary? Whereas the other legends represent dimensions, he's a representation of the Earth's core, the manifestation of the Earth's heart-- in the same way a Tarrasque is the representation of the Material plane.
    Also, also! Heatran being a Lava Dome, well we can say the Earth's core is kinda made up of two Lava Domes. In the 4th Gen games, there are two known Heatran: the one in Stark Mountain we catch, and the one being used in Palmer's team in the Battle Tower! That's 2 Lava Dome Pokémon-- also might explain Heatran having genders, a male and a female exists everytime for the core?

    I think Honcrow's red tail is supposed to be a reference to a bouquet of roses. Roses can have multiple meanings here, from a rose being a symbol of secrecy to a calling card after a murder to left as a sign of respect after said murder. I swear the rose meaning used to be on the bulbapedia article but has since been removed, it certainly looks more like a bouquet of roses more than a broom.

    I think you had a video at one point arguing that Giratina might be closer related to gravity than antimatter (which could make sense given that "antimatter" is so similar sounding to "dark matter," which itself it associated with gravity. The biggest reasons why I think that idea is likely are that the distortion world clearly has bizarre gravity within it, and also the fact that Giratina is the third member of a time-space trio. General Relativity famously states that gravity isn't really its own thing, but is rather a distortion of space and time, making it a very natural third member.

    I swear, Darkrai and Cressalia in the Pokemon Journeys series were in love, they gave me a forbidden love feel, but at the same time, Darkai went to save Cressalia and those two were happy to be together. Even more when Chloe says that when Darkrai returns to New moon island, Cressalia leaves and goes to full moon island which are islands beside each other. Cressalia has no reason to stay by Darkrai's side, but she does and I find it pretty romantic in a sense.

    • @alchemysaga3745
      @alchemysaga3745 Před rokem

      I disagree with the idea that Cressalia has no reason to stay with Darkrai, but it doesn't eliminate the implication that they're partners of some kind.
      Darkrai's Ability causes other beings to stay asleep, and have eternal nightmares, _regardless of whether they want the being to!_ With the implication being that Darkrai primarily *does NOT want this to happen,* hence why Darkrai stays on their own island, alone. Even though Darkrai does want company.
      Cressalia stays near Darkrai because not only are they immune to the effect of Darkrai's Ability; but being so close to Darkrai means Cressalia can offer Darkrai company. However, it also means that if someone is afflicted by Darkrai's Ability, Cressalia will be close enough for either Darkrai to go and get, or that any company the the victim brought can seek help from Cressalia.
      Cressalia stays to protect Darkrai from loneliness, from unwillingly hurting others, and from the humans that inevitably pursue Darkrai out of greed or malice.

    To add to this, in the Ramayana there is a very popular chapter where Hanuman burns the arrogant demon king Ravana's city with his burning tail, which is very subtly referenced in Monferno's fiery tail. The Chimchar line is my favourite Pokemon, I'm really excited to go back to my favourite region with my own 'Hanuman' 😍🐒

    10:27 one thing I like to mention about combee and Vespiquen is that a female combee has a dot on one of its heads (the bottom one) which could reference the fact that a hive can create a new queen bee by feeding a larval worker bee royal jelly, which turns them into a queen! That and in the world of bee keeping queens are often marked with a dot so beekeepers can easily spot them.
